ALTERNATIVE CURRICULUM COURSE GUIDE 18/19

WELCOME

Stockton Riverside College is a medium sized FE college located in the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees, providing vocational and academic education to 16-18 year olds and adults. In addition to its primary purpose, the college also has a long history of working with local schools to support the delivery of qualifications for 14-16 year olds.

The College has worked in partnership with the Local Authority and local schools to create a range of programmes to support schools in meeting the needs of their learners. The range of programmes available for learners to study are, in the majority, GCSE equivalent courses and contribute to progress 8 and attainment measures.

The College appeals to students who like to learn new skills in a practical ‘hands-on’ way. We provide, through our various campuses, a relaxed environment where students are taught by tutors with industry experience in modern and well-resourced workshops and classrooms. Students quickly learn the skills that enable them to access the same opportunities and maintain pace with their peers to support progression at the end of key stage 4.

Students have the opportunity to study at four different campuses within the Stockton Borough; where they study will depend on their choice of programme, level and individual reasons for coming to the college.

The following delivery models are examples of how the college can meet the needs of specific individual learners and groups. The models detailed in this booklet provide a guide. The College prides itself on being demand led and it will endeavour to meet the needs of schools and learners.

MODEL 1

Model 1 reflects qualifications that are listed in the 2019 Progress 8 Attainment Measures.

Stockton Riverside College offers schools the opportunity to gain technical awards or certificates in the following vocational subjects.

• Child Development and Care CACHE Award Level 2 • Creative Digital Media Production BTEC First Award Level 1/Level 2

• Constructing and Maintaining the Built Environment Technical Award Level 2 • Engineering Technology Foundation Certificate Level 1

• Vehicle Technology Technical Award Level 2

• Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy Certificate Level 2

• Hospitality BTEC First Award Level 1/Level 2

• Digital Applications Certificate Level 2

• Travel and Tourism BTEC First Award Level 1/Level 2

• Sport BTEC First Award Level 1/Level 2 Courses are delivered three hours per week over a period of 36 weeks. A minimum group size of six learners is required.

Costs are £50 per group x number of weeks x number of hours per week.* School meals, PPE and exam fees are charged separately.

MODEL 2

Infill Into Full Time Vocational Course

This model allows flexibility for learners to study at a choice of sites attending the following courses:

Stockton Riverside College Construction, Bricklaying, Joinery, Motor Vehicle, Catering, Health & Social Care, Aviation, Hair and Beauty.

SRC Bede Sixth Form Sport.

NETA Training Group Engineering.

The Skills Academy Construction, Health & Social Care/Childcare, Employability, Hair, Beauty & Catering, Creative Art & Design, Digital Media, IT.

These courses are full programmes inclusive of GCSE maths and English, enrichment, tutorial, My Work Search and enterprise. The programme may also include GCSE Biology.

Costs are ÂŁ10.50 per hour. School meals, PPE and exam fees are charged separately.

MODEL 3 Individualised Bespoke Packages

Model 3 packages are designed around the individual learner. They cover all of the subjects listed in Model 2, but can also be delivered as stand-alone subjects e.g. GCSE maths, English, and Biology.

The learner will only attend the vocational area of study and spend the remainder of the week back in school studying their core subjects.

Costs are £10.50 per hour. School meals, PPE and exam fees are charged separately.

HOW TO APPLY School Students

Electively Home Educated Learners

The school will make initial contact with the 14-16 Manager to discuss the learner’s needs and possible courses. A visit will then be organised for the school and learner to view the facilities and ask questions. At this point risk assessments/Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) documentation should be passed to the 14-16 Manager for reference.

Electively home educated students and their parents/carers/Local Authority (EHE) may approach the 14-16 Manager directly through the contact details given. The same procedure is then followed as for school students for the initial visits, taster sessions and enrolments.

The learner will then be invited for a taster session within their chosen area and an interview will be carried out by the tutor.

Once an offer has been made, the 14-16 Manager will draw up a Service Level Agreement for the school and parents to sign.

The learner will attend the course once all information is received and signed.
