fter a presence in this city that has lasted 90 years, its Spanish mission-like appearance towers over Main Street. The bright lights of the FOX sign attached to the cupola and the marquee's big capital letters give you the nostalgic vibe of a classic movie house. The six-foot ticket booth is complete with windows and an opening at the bottom, leaving room for eager moviegoers to receive their tickets for the night's event. A few steps through the main doors, you're standing in the middle of an exquisite rotunda complete with twelve carved, plaster columns. Each are detailed with carved faces encased in a lattice of gold-leaf plaster ribbons, rising up to a capital supporting the ceiling. The ceiling is adorned with scenes of conquistadores, heraldic shields, knights, and lions—and topped off with a gorgeous chandelier featuring over 100 lights. Lower your gaze and you'll see the beautifully red-patterned carpet and terrazzo floors. Stare long enough at this astounding display in architecture and you might assume you're inside a vintage Victorian castle.

T

hen comes the entrance to the theatre. Just before you walk through those doors, catch a glimpse of the beautiful, eight-foot-tall, gold-leafed, etchedmirrored panels. Then, pass through the doors and take in the magnitude of this legendary theatre's auditorium. Numerous rows of red cushioned seats on a slight decline lead to the main stage. A proscenium arch with a rose-colored ceiling featuring gold, copper, and silver stenciled stars. The center of the arch features a gilded carved face surrounded by a shell and a long red curtain draped down to the stage floor. If the entrance and rotunda are just the geneses of transporting a visitor to a past golden era, this auditorium solidifies the experience. Beautifully carved wooden frames and brackets outline the lofts and ceiling, and a balcony half the length of the main floor provides an exceptional view of the stage from above. All this wonder and amazement in one setting.

“I have three places, Edible Schoolyard… beautiful oasis, the Cambodian Buddhist Temple, my other absolute favorite place in Stockton, and my final place is Victory Park, I love taking people there.”

"We love to show our guests the Port of Stockton! People don’t realize that one of the reasons Stockton was founded wasn’t just because of agriculture, but because we have the most inland port in California.”

“I take them to my favorite Mexican food restaurant in downtown, Xochimilco. I’ve been going there since I was a child, it’s family-owned and operated, and everything is fresh, its hearty and you will leave FULL!”

Brandon Leake Spoken Word Poet, Educator, and Motivational Speaker

Michael McDonald Owner, Michael’s Heavenly Sweets

“We start at Bob’s at the Marina for French toast, for lunch were headed to El Grullense, for a nice, refreshing walk we’re headed to Consumnes River Preserve, and after that we will go to University of the Pacific to let them see all the beautiful, historic buildings.”

“That’s a tough one because there are so many great places, but the one place I love to go is Thai Me Up on the Miracle Mile. Great drinks, great seating, great ambiance!”

Stan Lee at Al's Comic Shop in Stockton

HOW STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA JOINED THE MARVEL UNIVERSE What do you get when you mix a local radio personality, a legendary comic book publisher, and a popular comic book superhero team? You get an epic moment that will live forever in comic book history.

"The one great truth about the Fantastic Four — is that we take care of our own!" Unlike the heroes of DC, the costumed protagonists of Marvel Comics tend to reside in factual cities; many of them residing in the boroughs of New York City. However, the Fantastic Four—made up of Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch) & Ben Grimm (The Thing)—resided in the fictional “Central City, CA.” Some fans wondered why this supergroup was given a fictional spot instead of an actual city. At the same time, comic book shops were 48 | This is Stockton

looking for opportunities to get an icon in their industry to visit them for the benefit of their customers. These two comic-focused mindsets resided within two Stocktonians; two individuals who would go on to leave an impact on our resilient city. Those two men are Al Greco and Joe Field. 1986 would mark the 25th anniversary of Marvel Comics. Within the walls of Greco's own comic shop Al's Comics, the idea of getting Marvel Comics Publisher & comic book forefather Stan Lee to Stockton was born. A petition was conjured up to get over 300 true blue Marvel and Stan Lee fans to sign. Greco sent off the fully signed petition while Field— OFFICIAL VISIT STOCKTON GUIDE

Stocktonians welcoming Stan Lee at the steps of city hall working promotions for KJOY-AM Radio— pushed the idea of getting Marvel to name Stockton the home of the Fantastic Four. The local media attention led to Stockton City Council joining in and pushing forward a resolution that Stockton should be known as the home of the Fantastic Four. The news went national when the Los Angeles Times wrote a story about the proposal, followed by a KCRA News 3 report from Rich Ibarra. Eventually, both the petition signatures and the city resolution news made their way to Stan Lee—and Lee was fully onboard. On February 26, 1986, Stan “The Man” Lee stood on the steps of Stockton City Hall for a special ceremony and made it official. The Fantastic Four comic issue #296 would be the first issue to reference Stockton as the foursome’s home. Stockton would go on to be featured in future Fantastic Four stories Marvels: Eye of the Camera Vol. 11 (Dec. 2008) and The Fantastic Four Season 1 Vol. 11 (October 2011). VISITSTOCKTON.ORG

Disc Golf

Enjoy one of the fastest-growing sports in the world! Here is your opportunity to check out the three best disc golf courses in and near Stockton.

Oak Grove Regional Park 4520 W Eight Mile Rd. You actually have two courses to choose from at Oak Grove Regional Park. The Purple and Gold courses rest among manicured grass flanked by massive oaks. While this is the most popular course in Stockton and home to a lot of tournaments, it’s also a great place to learn the sport. Micke Grove Regional Park 11793 Micke Grove Rd., Lodi The course at this regional park, also known for its zoo and Japanese Garden among other features, offers a bit more of a challenge. You’ll have to work your way around numerous trees while also avoiding the large water feature that lurks at three of the holes. The challenge is worth it, however, as the course is beautifully maintained and makes for a great day outdoors. Swenson Park 6803 Alexandria Pl. Located at Swenson Park Golf Course, this disc golf course was created by the Delta Windjammers, our local disc golf advocates, and hosts of some pretty big national tournaments. If you find that disc golf is something you’d like to spend more time doing, look into the leagues and other events here and join a supportive, fun community. Swenson is also home to the Disc Golf Pro Tour OTB Open offering up a challenging course layout specially designed for the pro event.
