Welcome to Stockholm – The Capital of Scandinavia! Stockholm is widely celebrated as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, built where lake meets sea, on fourteen islands, with ten centuries of history and culture. The Swedish Royal Capital is also widely known for its remarkable modernity, progressiveness and trend sensitivity in everything from lifestyle to fashion, design, food and drink and usage of new technology. The combination of magnificent scenery, ancient history and tradition, and a pervasive innovative spirit combine to give Stockholm its truly exceptional character and charm.   We like to claim that Stockholm is a city which has all of the qualities and allures of a major international metropolis but few of its usual downsides. It’s a city where it’s easy and efficient to move around, where the air is fresh and the waters clean, with plenty of space for everyone to roam freely. Vast green areas don’t just surround the city, they permeate it. Few other places let you experience the pleasures and enchantments of nature, urban sophistication and cultural history, all in a single day. Come and experience this unique quality of life in Stockholm.

Don’t miss! 1  Gamla stan (The Old Town) Europe’s largest and bestpreserved medieval city center on the island of Stadsholmen, where Stockholm was founded as a fortification in the 12th century. All of the Old Town is like a living museum, pedestrian-friendly and filled with sights, attractions, restaurants, cafés, bars, and shopping. The narrow winding cobblestone streets give the Old Town a unique character. The whole area is like something straight out of a fairytale, especially in the winter. It is the place to go for Swedish handicrafts, knickknacks, and souvenirs. In the Old Town you’ll find Sweden’s national cathedral Storkyrkan, where Crown Princess Victoria married Prince Daniel in the summer of 2010, close by the Royal Palace, one of the world’s largest inhabited palaces with more than 600 rooms. It was built primarily in the 18th century in Italian baroque style, on the site of the old Three Crowns castle which burned down in 1697. In addition to the state suites there are various interesting museums at the palace, including the Royal Armoury, featuring clothing and suits of armour worn by royals through the centuries. The guard change, sometimes mounted, and the daily changing of the guard are popular attractions.

6  Skansen The world’s oldest and prettiest open-air museum on the island of Djurgården. Visit historical Sweden in miniature, and see Nordic animals like the elk, bear, lynx, wolf, wolverine and seal. Old farms and dwellings from different parts of the country have been dismantled and transported to the museum. There are also several restaurants and attractions, terrariums, and a monkey enclosure. In December Skansen is special, with a Christmas market and old-fashioned Christmas buffets can be enjoyed. 4  Millesgården Exquisitely beautiful sculpture park and museum on the island of Lidingö, with breathtaking views of Stockholm and the port entrance. Created by the sculptor Carl Milles. Unparalleled!

Fotografiska Ambitious museum of high international standard for photography, located in an old port warehouse in beautiful surroundings, with a nice café and a book shop with a large variety of books. Long opening hours and temporary exhibitions featuring some of the biggest international photographers. Stockholm Archipelago Despite of all of the city’s attractions, for many people Stockholm’s most spectacular attraction is still the archipelago’s wonderful maritime landscape with more than 30,000 islands, islets and skerries.

2  Stockholm from the water Of course, a city built on 14 islands offers an infinite number of stunning water views. Stockholm has scores of waterfront walkways, with spectacular and constantly changing scenery. And be sure to take a boat sightseeing tour of the city. 3  Vasamuseet (The Vasa Museum) A five-star attraction on the island of Djurgården. The 230-foot warship Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in 1628 in Stockholm harbour and was not salvaged until 1961. Over nearly half a century the Vasa has been slowly and meticulously restored to near original splendour. 5  Moderna Museet (The Modern Museum) One of the world’s premier museums for international art from the 20th and 21st centuries, located on the beautiful museum island of Skeppsholmen. A fantastic collection of Swedish and international masterpieces from the last century. A superb program of temporary exhibitions, a museum shop with a large variety of goods, and a charming restaurant with lovely views across to Djurgården and the grand waterfront esplanade of Strandvägen. 7  Stadshuset (City Hall) Stockholm’s majestic landmark, built as a supersized Italian renaissance palace in the early 20th century. Visit the famous Blue and Golden Halls, where the Nobel Banquet is celebrated on December 10 every year. Guided tours only. Don’t miss the view from the City Hall tower if you’re visiting Stockholm during the summer.

Three World Heritage Sites The Stockholm region has no fewer than three sites listed on Unesco’s register of places judged invaluable for humanity. Birka Sweden’s first real town. During Viking times, Birka on the island of Björkö in Lake Mälaren, was the central hub and the most important marketplace in the entire Mälar Valley. It was established in the eighth century, attracting travellers from near and afar. Birka of today has a wealth of ancient remains that have been excavated and studied since the 19th century. Birka is ideal for a daytrip. During summer, boats depart from the dock at City Hall.

8  Drottningholm Drottningholm Palace is often called the Versailles of the North. This has caused many people to believe that Drottningholm is a copy of Versailles, but in fact, they are more or less contemporary. Construction began in the 17th century, and today the King and Queen of Sweden lives there. The gardens, the Palace Theater, with intact 18th-century stage design, and the Chinese Pavilion are attractions worthy of a visit in their own right. 9  The Woodland Cemetery A place of sublime beauty and poetry. Created over a period of a quarter century (1915–1940) on about 250 acres of pine-covered boulder ridge under the direction of the famous modernist architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz. Con sidered one of the most important works of the modernists, it evokes a Nordic philosophy on nature, life, and death. There are also a number of beautiful chapels.

Ghost walks in the Old Town are also very popular. Boats A city built on 14 islands simply must be seen from the water. In Stockholm and the archipelago, there are numerous boat sightseeing tours to choose from. Boats also serve as a means of transport between the great attractions of Stockholm. Buses Stockholm offers a wide range of guided bus tours in different languages. 10  SkyView The world’s biggest spherical building, the ricsson Globe Arena, has an exciting new attraction – E SkyView. THINGS TO DO

13

Urban nature Perhaps Stockholm’s most distinctive quality is the interplay between the city and the wild nature which surrounds and traverses it. Enjoy the rare pleasures fresh air, clean water and birdsong in the heart of the metropolis! Ekoparken The world’s first national urban park is a green lung forming an arc more than six miles long, stretching around and through the city. You can encounter deer and hares, even foxes and elk, and see rare birds, butterflies and insects, right inside the city. Fishing People fishing outside the Royal Palace is a classic Stockholm sight. These waters are good for salmon fishing – otherwise fishers wouldn’t be standing there every day, year round. The record for a salmon caught in downtown Stockholm is 48 pounds! Swimming Stockholmers are proud that you can swim in the center of town. Stockholm and its surroundings have lots of swimming spots that are popular with sun worshippers on summer days, for instance the beaches of Långholmsbadet, Rålambshovsbadet and Reimersholme. Find your own private swimming spot, in the middle of Stockholm! Kayaking There’s no more beautiful way to discover Stockholm than from a kayak. You can paddle between all the city’s islands, going ashore for a meal or a coffee, and then why not head out into the archipelago. Kayaks are available for rent at various locations, including at the lovely Djurgården Canal and the Rålambshov Park.

SVB2011_TS_tove4.indd 7

Golfing Stockholm and environs has more than 60 golf courses, including several championship courses, of which many are located in beautiful surroundings. Some have green fees among the lowest in Europe and at many of the courses you can also rent your equipment. Playing late into the night on light summer evenings is particularly exotic. Biking Bike lanes run throughout the city, for convenient, safe cycling. In addition, bike rental firms are plentiful. Ice skating When the waterways of Stockholm freeze over, it’s a magical experience to glide through the city. Many locals will do anything for a good day out on the ice. Trip skating on natural ice requires knowledge and special equipment. An alternative is to rent skates and take to the ice in Kungsträdgården, a park in the center of town, or one of the many skating rinks and courses around the city. Skiing and Snowboarding Hammarbybacken is a centrally located ski slope with runs for both beginners and medium skiers. Funpark, skiing school and rental of skis. Winter swimming Bathing in a hole in the ice after taking a sauna may sound like a terrifying experience for the novice, but it is in fact an experience unlike any other. The beautifully located Fredhällsbadet in central Stockholm and the recreation area of Hellasgården just on the outskirts of Stockholm are two of many locations where you can try out this exotic physical and meditative Nordic thrill.

THINGS TO DO

More of Stockholm! Stockholm is a city packed with opportunities. Here follows a list of suggestions about the city’s many interesting, enjoyable and appealing sights. MORE THAN

40% of Stockholm consists of parks and other green areas

GREEN STOCKHOLM

We were proud, but to be honest, we thought it was the natural choice when Stockholm in 2010 was chosen to be Europe’s first Green Capital by the Europe Commission. Stockholm is not only a city surrounded by and crisscrossed with wonderful nature and wilderness, but has for many years worked long term and ambitiously with environmental issues. Stockholm is a capital city proud to offer fresh air that is healthy to breathe, water that is so clean that you can swim and fish in it, extensive green areas to enjoy and a noise level which, in comparison with other big cities, is very low. Stockholm also has the highest amount of ecolabel hotels, conference facilities and restaurants in Europe. We dare to claim that the Swedish capital fulfils the most unusual of situations — that of being an international metropolis living and breathing on nature’s terms!

SVB2011_TS_tove4.indd 10

Millenium tour in the footsteps of Lisbeth Salander Swedish detective novels are a whole different story, and the best-selling Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson has become yet another reason for many people to visit Stockholm. Sixty million copies of the books have been sold in over 40 different languages. The Swedish film versions and now more recently the film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in the leading roles have

increased yet more interest among Stieg Larsson fans from around the world. Take one of the popular guided tours that follow in the footsteps of Larsson’s heroes, Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander. Visit the sites mentioned in the novels and seen in the films, on Södermalm. visitstockholm.com

“One of the nice things about Stockholm is that one third of it is water. That makes the city totally different. The inner city is exciting and stuff, it feels like the countryside has come to the city. As a father, it’s really nice and they got quite a lot right here. The kids grow up doing fairly natural things – best of both worlds. I would be really happy if my kids would grow up here, it would be lovely.” JAMIE OLIVER From the TV-show “Jamie does... Events and festivals

Romantic Stockholm Stockholm is the perfect city for a romantic break. The sheer beauty of the city and its atmosphere are romantic in themselves but it also offers a host of special romantic attractions. Take a walk along Monteliusvägen perched on the hills of Södermalm, with views over the Old Town and the city centre — a spot where many choose to get engaged. Take a trip with a romantic old white archipelago boat to the royal Drottningholm Palace and enjoy a walk through the wonderful palace grounds passing the pink Chinese Pavilion, given as a gift by King Adolf Fredrik to Queen Lovisa Ulrika on her birthday in 1753. Or why not take a longer excursion to Sandhamn island in Stockholm’s outer archipelago, chosen by Travel & Leisure magazine to be one of the world’s most romantic locations, where the hotel in the dainty archipelago harbour offers wonderful bathing in heated outdoor pools. Simply taking a stroll along the streets of the Old Town, Södermalm, Östermalm, the extensive Royal Djurgården park or along Norr Mälarstrand to then enjoy a relaxed lunch or dinner at one of the city’s many romantic restaurants, bars and cafés is an experience that just oozes love!

Stockholm is one of Europe’s leading cities for international events and congresses. The most widely known of the annual events is the Nobel Banquet on December 10, with the awards ceremony in the Concert Hall and the banquet in the City Hall. There are also a number of our annual traditional Swedish festivities that are celebrated with great vigour and splendour throughout our beautiful city. You can keep up with what´s happening in Stockholm on visitstockholm.com, where you will find updated information about the many events that take place each day in Stockholm. Royal Stockholm The Swedish capital is truly royal by nature, with a regal magnificence, pomp and splendour. The Royal Palace is in itself a destination where you can spend more than a day. It is outstanding in northern Europe for its size and magnificence, and offers a number of interesting museums and tours, plus the daily changing of the guard and other attractions. The Swedish Royal couple current residency Drottningholm, located close to lake Mälaren outside Stockholm is a beautiful and interesting day excursion, often and sometimes miss quoted as the Versailles of Nordic and protected by Unesco World Heritage list. In the extensive city park, Royal Djurgården, there are a number of royal palaces, manors and places to visit. Haga Palace is located in the adjoining Haga Park, where Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel have moved to start their family, and where the 18th century Gustav III’s Pavilion can be found. Museums in Stockholm

A district chosen by Stockholmers Sometimes escaping the most central part of the city and visiting a world where the atmosphere and mood is quite different can be appreciated. Cosy Birkastan in Vasastan is one of many such ’enclaves’ in Stockholm well worth a visit — a young and trendy scene with many welcoming restaurants, cafés, bars fashion, design and antiquity shops, plus vintage and second hand shops.

Stockholm, with over one hundred museums, is one of the world’s most museum-rich cities. Many are unique, such as the Vasa Museum with its intact 17th century Vasa ship, and the openair museum Skansen with its exhibition of Sweden’s history in miniature. There are dozens of art museums, many of which are located on and around the beautiful and idyllic museum island Skeppsholmen in the heart of the city. The selection of galleries is impressive and art galleries such as Magasin 3, Bonniers art gallery and the newly opened Sven-Harry’s are world class. We have now also gained an outstanding international photography stage — Fotografiska has become a trendsetting and formidable success giving Stockholmers the opportunity to visit some of the most famous,

large-scale exhibitions in international photographic history. Fotografiska has also become a meeting place thanks to its popular restaurant and shop, open every day until 21.00. You can also reach the Fotografiska by boat.

DINING

DINING Michelin stars and FINE DINING The selection of modern gourmet restaurants in Stockholm is staggering. Last year the city had no less than six Michelin-starred restaurants If you’re up for some truly innovative dining adventures, many more are well worth a visit. Stockholm chefs can certainly hold their own and more with any competition in the world. Esperanto Describes its approach as”romantic, surrealist, with touches of natural elements”. As the name suggests, it finds inspiration in food cultures worldwide. One reviewer writes: ”Spectacular entertainment with dashes of humor and decadence”. Doesn’t that sound quite enticing..? Kungstensgatan 2, +46 (0)8 696 23 23, www.esperantorestaurant.se Fredsgatan 12 (F12) A modern classic among Stockholm’s top restaurants, located by the water and the Government offices and ministries. The guests are an invigorating blend of people from politics, finance, culture and, of course, foodies. The focus is on innovative international cuisine with unusual flavor combinations guaranteed to surprise any pleasure-hungry diner. Fredsgatan 12, +46 (0)8 24 80 52, www.f12.se Lux Stockholm The concept is based on the four typically Swedish flavours - salty, sweet and sour, smoky, and spicy - in combination with a close cooperation with carefully selected local producers. The venue is exquisite, especially in summer when the doors towards Lake Mälaren are opened. Primusgatan 116, +46 (0)8 619 01 90, www.luxstockholm.se Mathias Dahlgren In 2007 one of Sweden’s most celebrated chefs opened his new restaurant in a magnificent location in the Grand Hôtel, with views across to the Royal Palace. Mathias Dahlgren has been awarded three Michelin stars, two for Matsalen (The Dining Room) and one for Matbaren (The food bar). Dahlgren’s kitchen takes Swedish ingredients and culinary culture to new peaks. Superbly entertaining, both on the plate and in the dining room itself, in addition to the towering flavors. Dining out of the ordinary Stockholm overflows with restaurants offering beautiful sea views and other unique qualities that add new dimensions to your dining experience. AG AG is the chemical symbol for silver and the name stems from the fact that this trendy and popular industrial-chic restaurant on Kungsholmen is set in an old silver factory. Despite its somewhat off-beat location and the fierce competition, AG immediately became a meeting place that attracted ’everyone’ and a major topic of conversation when it opened its doors in 2011. Specialising in meat, which is tenderized on site in a large fridge that can be inspected as you take your seats. Kronobergsgatan 37, +46 (0) 8 410 61 00, www.restaurangag.se Östermalm Food Hall Gorgeous food hall from the 1880s, with counters and shelves are packed with the best of the finest. Lunch: a smart investment Lunch prices in Stockholm restaurants are generally very reasonable. You can normally get a well-made ’Dagens lunch’ (Lunch of the Day) for less than a hundred Crowns, with a choice of meat, fish or vegetarian. Also, at lunch you’re not expected to leave a tip. Best of all is that the price usually includes a nonalcoholic drink, plus bread and butter, salad, coffee and sometimes even something sweet. After a lunch like that you’re well prepared for a full day of walking, sightseeing and shopping.

Start when the night is young!

Clubbers in Stockholm are spoiled for choice, with a particular concentration of venues around Stureplan in the city center. Other hotspots include the boulevards of Kungsgatan and Birger Jarlsgatan and the area around Kungsträdgården. On Friday and Saturday nights, most clubs are open until three, and sometimes to five in the morning. Thursdays are also big club nights. Some of the hottest clubs have long lines and lots of VIP guests. Usually the lines don’t form until after midnight, so it’s smart to start early – why not combine it with a meal? Most clubs have restaurants on the premises.

TRAVEL It’s easy to get to Stockholm from most places in the world, with direct flights from many large cities. Low-price airlines have made it much easier and cheaper to travel here. Stockholm has three airports, with good connections to the city center. From the main airport, Stockholm Arlanda Airport, the Arlanda Express fast train takes you to the city center in 20 minutes. Airport buses, Flygbussarna – Airport Coaches, run frequently from all the three Stockholm airports. Transport within Stockholm is efficient, convenient, and safe. Fastest is the subway, which covers the entire Stockholm area. The buses are quick and environmental, traveling in separate lanes and powered by ethanol. At any time, you can order a cab from your cell phone and be picked up often within five minutes. Some of the leading reliable cab companies are Taxi Stockholm, TaxiKurir, Taxi 020 and Transfer Taxi. Some companies offer a set price, and you can always pay by credit card. The standard price from Arlanda Airport to Stockholm City should be around 500 SEK and from Cruise Ports around 200–250 SEK.
