In the Catholic faith, Ash Wednesday is a day of prayer and penance that marks the beginning of Lent. It's a somber day that serves as a reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God.

Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, according to history.com. Plenty of stories surround his life, including an account that he banished all snakes from Ireland, but his life is somewhat of a mystery.
Here's what is known or believed:
• St. Patrick was born in Great Britain near the end of the fourth century.
• He is believed to have died on March 17, around 460 A.D.
• A group of Irish raiders took Patrick prisoner when he was 16, and he spent six years in captivity before he escaped.
• It is believed Patrick began to dream of converting the Irish people to Christianity during his captivity.
• After being ordained as a priest, he was sent to Ireland to minister to Christians already living in Ireland and to begin to convert the Irish.
• Patrick used his knowledge of the Irish culture and language into his lessons of Christianity. Examples include:
o Using bonfires to celebrate Easter since the Irish were used to honoring their gods with fire.
o Superimposing a sun, a powerful Irish symbol, onto the Christian cross to create what is now called a Celtic cross.
• While Patrick is known as the patron saint of Ireland, he was never actually canonized by the Catholic Church. He was likely proclaimed a saint by popular acclaim, according to history.com.
Legend has it that Patrick explained the Holy Trinity the father, son and holy spirit — using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock.
"The shamrock was a sacred plant in ancient Ireland because it symbolized the rebirth of spring," according to history.com.
Why do we eat green food and drink green beer for St. Patrick's Day?
The association of the holiday probably dates back to the 18th century, when supporters of Irish independence used the color to represent their cause, according to history.com.
"Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon.
"Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.
