Native American Heritage Month

National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each year in November. It is a time to celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”) have been issued each year since 1994.

National Native American Heritage Month timeline

1900 First Proponent for an American Indian Day: Dr. Arthur was the first person to persuade the Boy Scouts to observe a day for the Native Americans.

1915 A Day for American Indians: The director of the American Indian Association calls for a separate day for the American Indians.

1976 Native American Awareness Week is Declared: Congress passes a resolution to declare a week for American Indians.

2009 National Native American Month is Declared: Barack Obama issues a declaration to assign November as National Native American Month.

SUNDAY THE 3RD AT 2 AM,

VETERANS DAY

MONDAY NOVEMBER 11TH

Veterans Day is the Day to Honor All Who Have Served to Protect our Country. No Matter if they are “Still With Us” or "Made the Supreme Sacrifice"!

Prayer: Father, bless our veterans and all who serve our nation defending our freedom. For those who bravely gave their lives, grant them eternal rest. For those who are serving, give them courage. For those who served, we offer our gratitude. Amen.

THANKSGIVING DAY

NOVEMBER 28TH

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in October and November in the United States, Canada, Saint Lucia, Liberia, and unofficially in countries like Brazil, Germany and the Philippines. It is also observed in the Dutch town of Leiden and the Australian territory of Norfolk Island. It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessings of the harvest and of the preceding year. Various similarly named harvest festival holidays occur throughout the world during autumn. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday as well.

An annual thanksgiving holiday tradition in North American colonies is documented for the first time in 1619. The more familiar Thanksgiving precedent accompanied by feasting is traced to the Pilgrims and Puritans who emigrated from England in the 1620s and 1630s. They brought their previous tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England. The 1621 Plymouth, Massachusetts thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. The Pilgrims celebrated this with the Wampanoags, a tribe of Native Americans who, along with the last surviving Patuxet, had helped them get through the previous winter by giving them food in that time of scarcity, in exchange for an alliance and protection against the rival Narragansett tribe.
