Holy Week is the most important week in Catholicism. This week of great reverence and reflection spans the final eight days of Jesus’ life from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. It is astounding how much wisdom, insight and inspiration are available to us during this one week. Here is st a sample of what happens during Holy Week:
• Palm Sunday, Jesus triumphantly enters Jerusalem
• Monday of Holy Week, Jesus clears out the temple with a whip
• Tuesday of Holy Week, Jesus is anointed with oil at Bethany and preaches on the Mount of Olives
• Spy Wednesday, Jesus is betrayed by Judas
• Holy Thursday, Jesus celebrates the Last Supper, prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, and is arrested
• Good Friday, Jesus is sentenced to death, scourged, beaten, crucified, and dies on the Cross
• Holy Saturday, Jesus is buried in the tomb and descends into hell
• Easter Sunday, Jesus rises from the dead
We are all trying to make sense of life. One way for us to understand our lives is to look at them through the great experiences that happen during Holy Week. Just try this exercise–at the end of every day, ask yourself, “What sort of day did I have today? Did I have an Ash Wednesday day, or did I have an Easter Sunday day? Did I have a Good Friday day, or did I have a Holy Saturday day?"
What defines those sorts of days? Good Friday is an easy one it's a day of suffering and sacrifice. There are some days you get to the end of, and you feel like that's the kind of day you've had. What's Holy Saturday? It's a day of darkness, doubt, anxiety, confusion, and a day where faith is tested. What’s Easter Sunday? It’s a day of new life. Maybe there's a birth of a child in the family, and we see it as a miracle, a gift from God.
We're trying to make sense of our lives, and God is constantly trying to help us make sense of them. These great moments in the life of the Church and the life of Jesus provide powerful lenses through which we can see our lives in a new way, expanding our understanding of ourselves and others.
Keep reading for more information about each day of Holy Week and simple, yet powerful ways to engage with each moment along the way.

What is Easter about?
On Christmas, we celebrate the Incarnation—God becoming human –with Jesus’s birth. During Lent, we recall the cross—Jesus’s crucifixion and death.
At Easter, we rejoice in the empty tomb Jesus’s resurrection. Easter is the day Jesus rose from the dead after being crucified.
The empty tomb means that Jesus’s words rang true. He fulfilled the promises of Scripture and conquered sin and death.
Had Jesus not risen from the dead, the world would have seen Him as just a prophet or teacher instead of who he is: the Son of God, the Messiah.
Jesus overcoming death is the reason we know His name today. It’s the foundation of all Christianity. With His death and resurrection, Jesus opened heaven to all of us. Because of Easter, we know that no matter what sufferings we experience or what sins we struggle with, God is always with us.
Easter is everything.
And its significance is clear from the start in the Bible.
Before baskets, egg hunts and the scramble to get to Mass, the morning can be a great opportunity to draw near to God with a simple prayer to begin the day.
Use these simple words to offer up a quiet moment to God before the Easter festivities begin in earnest.
• Heavenly Father, our hearts are so full of joy today. You feel so near to us on this most special celebration of Easter. May the love we feel this morning stay with us the rest of the day and always. Amen.
• As we begin this day celebrating Jesus’s victory over death, we pray, O Heavenly Father, that You be near to us and continue to guide us until we join in the unending celebration in heaven. In Your name we pray. Amen.
• I offer up this morning to you, Lord, and pray in gratitude for the gift of salvation that Jesus won for us. As the day gets busier, may I never stray far from the quiet peace I feel in my heart right now, knowing how deep Your love is for me. Amen.
Reflecting on the Lenten Season
People often don’t look forward to Lent. Childhood memories of giving up candy or sitting through weekly Stations of the Cross come immediately to mind. Words like “sacrifice,” “discipline,” and “self-denial” are often used in ways that suggest that Lent is something to be endured rather than a time of grace and spiritual growth.
Have you ever thought of Lent as a yearly second chance? Each year the Church gives us six weeks to take a long, loving look at our lives to see if our values and priorities are in line with God’s desires for us. Since most of us find that we’ve wandered from God’s path, Lent becomes that second chance, or doover, to “return to God with our whole heart.”
We’re highlighting Lenten practices and memories of people who have shared their stories with us. Their experiences range from pious and traditional to creative and out-of-the-ordinary, but all of them represent attempts to make the season of Lent a meaningful time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving for themselves, their loved ones, and their communities. Invite family members to share their thoughts, hopes, and desires for Lent. Decide to support one another in whatever you choose to do. As you journey through this annual second chance, remember that each step brings you closer to the welcoming arms of our loving God.
How do you live out in your own life the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving?
What have you learned about yourself, your faith, and God through your own Lenten practices?
