Message from the Minister Dear all, When I start a new book, I am always curious as to whom the book has been dedicated. One book that I started this week was dedicated to the author's husband.

After his name were written the words: "Always and again". I found these very simple words arresting.

Always.

And. Again. I thought about some of the old couples in St. Mungo's who are both still together and yet living.

C and T. J and C. M and R. J and I. And the list goes on and on...

All of my high school friends turned 40 this year. The last time we were all together was in the Summer of 1995.

Before the big graduation day, the annual graduating class picnic and pool party was held at the outdoor town pool. It was an overcast day and a bit cool and many of us had stayed on the fringes of the pool. But some dove straight in. When it neared closing time, something remarkable happened. Some of the lads I had known casually, through gym class or through friends, who had braved the cold to jump into the pool from the very outset, went around grabbing people and throwing them into the pool.

Once the newly baptised emerged from the water, they joined the perpetrators. Soon a mob ensued. The yet-tobe-baptised were running around the periphery of the pool trying to avoid capture. Some tried to go into hiding in the changing facilities. All of it was no use. People were being 4

hunted down. I heard one girl scream a remonstration that rang hollow like Genesis 31:35: "And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched but found not the images." (KJV) Jason, who I had always liked but had not counted as part of my "crew", came up with several of his henchmen. He was a thoughtful and considerate soul and was well liked by members of our class. One Halloween he showed up to chemistry class dressed up as Kramer from the show Seinfeld when it was all the rage. He would be attending Tufts University in the Fall.

"Cha, you're going in," he said. My closest friends call me "Sangy" and those with whom I have shared a warm relationship from a distance call me "Cha". I knew that resistance was futile as he had the entire football (American) team behind him. "I can see that," said I, "but give me a moment."

I still can remember what I was wearing that day. A pink polo button down shirt, khaki shorts from GAP (when GAP was still making clothes that one could actually wear. What happened to you GAP?), and brown penny loafers. Then with the resignation of an inmate on death row, I stood up and took out my leather belt and leather wallet and placed them inside my loafers.

"Let's do this thing," I said. Six football players grabbed me as I spread my arms into a cruciform. It was totally gonzo.

Then before I knew it, I was hurled nearly 10 yards into the deep end of the water. When I came back up, with my hair plastered to my forehead, I laughed and shouted "Bethzatha!" It must have sounded perfectly bizarre to those 5

bobbing up and down next to me. The water had been heated and there we were being bathed in celestial light.

There was laughter and people were losing their minds.

We were all in the water together. It would be the last time. I was 18.

St. Mungo's. We are all in the water together. We have lost some good people during my nearly 6 years here. It will not be the last time.

The church is a highly emotional and often highly fraught environment even when it is doing extremely well. In this setting, "winning" as such does not solve all problems or even keep the grumbling at bay.

However, it was Wu-Men a wise man who said, "If your mind isn't clouded by unnecessary things, this is the best season of your life."

"Always and again".

This is what we must be always choosing- the consequences of our baptism and thus the consequences of love. We call it the water of life.

Always. And. Again.

Conservation Project latest We are now moving forward quickly towards the commencement of the agreed conservation work. This includes the repairs to the Church, Session House and Porch roofs , and the stone work to the external walls of the Church, as well as a number of internal alterations.

Subject to the approval of HLF, Members should begin to see activities both within and outside the building. Once started it is anticipated that all of the external work should be finished

by Autumn this year.

Concurrent with this work, a programme of anniversary celebrations is being organised to take place over the next two years in recognition of the foundation laying in 2017 and the consecration of the new Church in 2019. Detailed information on some of these events will be issued shortly.

We sincerely hope that you will support these events and find them of interest.

However, and there is always a caveat, we are still short of our required fundraising target by ÂŁ20,000. While the response to our appeals by both Members and others has been encouraging and appreciated, some 50% of our membership have still to respond and , however small , show their support for what we are trying to achieve on their behalf, namely, securing the future of our historic place of Worship.

I would therefore make a further appeal to all, to help us close this funding gap sooner rather than later so that we can proceed with the restoration work and commemoration activities in the knowledge that the funds to pay for these programmes are secure.

The Bi-Centenary Conservation Project of St Mungo’s, Alloa is -

St. Mungo's Bicentenary Celebrations: Past, Present, Future.

By the time you read this we will have celebrated the 200th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone. People who attended the commemorative exhibition on Saturday 25th February enjoyed the very interesting displays including a variety of floral arrangements, representing church organisations. Memories of the past and links with the present were featured in wedding displays, the life and work of the Guild, the Craft Group including its outreach programme, the Bible Class and a host of memorabilia donated by members of the congregation. Very fond memories of activities and loved ones were revisited. Thoughts for the future were also included. A highlight was the return of the original St Mungo statue. If only it could speak of all it has surveyed over time!

An up-dated booklet, “The Story So Far” provided a first class guide for visitors to St. Mungo's. People had fun trying to find all the Church furnishings in an activity booklet. The home baking was thoroughly enjoyed too. On the Sunday a family service was held and a guest preacher Rev. Daniel Chae spoke 8

on the theme of “I will build my church.” As usual the church Praise Band provided enjoyable lively music and we were pleased to welcome the addition of Ian Paget’s Praise Band.

Thereafter, in the Session House the congregation tucked into soup and a wonderful celebration cake made by Jennie Syme.

Joyce Ferguson takes this opportunity to thank all involved, in front and behind the scenes, for their dedication, efforts and time involved in the production of the celebratory events.

Stained Glass Window Plans for the commemorative stained glass window have progressed and we have now commissioned an artist who is working on our chosen theme for the window: “A Journey of Faith and Hope- over the last 200 years.” A river of life, also representing the Forth, will be the main feature. It is hoped that a local factory will sponsor the funding for our window.

The artist will work closely with the committee and share ideas and drawings before a final decision is made. When these are available they will be shared also with the congregation.

People attending the 200th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone were given an opportunity to contribute to the design.

REPORTS FROM YOUR ORGANISATION MISSION GROUP

The mission group is committed to organising events and activities that aid the congregation to deepen their spiritual journey. During Advent there was a successful Christingle service and prayer vigil. We are currently looking at dates to repeat a prayer vigil during Lent. We are also looking at possible Lent studies to prepare us for Easter. The Thursday evening bible group is continuing and all are welcome. Please contact Morris Field if you are interested in joining. Also if you want to become healthy in body, spirit and mind, the church is running the Daniel Plan which looks at issues of faith and what causes us to have unhealthy habits. If you are interested in taking part, please speak to Michelle McAdoo. Sang is looking to run a Christianty Explored group which will examine what it means to be a Christian. The church is also running a visitor programme which is a vital link to some of our members who no longer can make it to church. If you feel that this is something that you could help with, speak to Beatrice Campbell. If you have any suggestions for activities or programmes that would deepen our spiritual experiences feel free to contact me.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

This session we are continuing with stories about Elisha who trusted God would do extraordinary things even when it seemed impossible.

Soon we will be starting crafts for Easter and we have just started learning a new song which will hopefully be part of the All age service at Easter.

If you are aged 3 or over and attending nursery or primary school come along and join us on Sunday mornings. We would love to see you.

BIBLE CLASS We are continuing our study of Mark's gospel, discussing both the text and any topics which arise from it.

Our topics recently have been blasphemy, change in the church and truth.

The work we do will be on display on Saturday 25th February at the bicentenery celebration of the laying of the foundation stone.

All of us in the Bible Class would like to pay tribute to John Syme who died recently. John and his wife Mary did so much work among young people in their roles as Boys' Brigade leaders and Sunday School teachers. Sir Walter Scott sums them up perfectly at the end of his novel "The Heart of Midlothian."

Talking about his two main characters, he writes, "Meanwhile, happy in each other, in the prosperity of their family, and the love and honour of all who knew them, this simple pair lived beloved and died lamented."

GUILD NEWS

On 3rd March, St. Mungo's is hosting the local World Day of Prayer meeting in the Church at 7.30 p.m.

We hope for a good turn out of our own congregation and those of other local churches. This annual event is hosted on a rota basis with readers from all local churches taking part. This year the service has been compiled by the women of the Philippines.

Please come along and support our own ladies who are hosting the evening and doing home baking.

7th March - Christian Aid. Caring for Mother Earth in Bolivia.

This is a Guild project we are supporting this year.

10th March - Friday - 40 members of the Guild will enjoy High Tea at Royal Oak then go to Town Hall to see Evita.

The AGM will be held in the Session House on 21st March.

27th March - Visit to Alloa Baptist Church (7.30p.m.) to hear of the work of the Mercy Ships from Helen Dunbar.

1st April - Guild Spring Coffee Morning - Session House from 10 - 12 noon.

23rd May - Guild Summer Outing - TBA. The year comes to a close with Guild Rally on Thursday, 1st June. Venue Strathblane.

THE CRAFT GROUP It is another busy year at Craft Group. Members have worked hard to complete all PhD’s and UFO's for the Christmas Fayre and Mini-Market and recently have worked on a display for the beginning of the Bicentenary celebrations at end of February. (PhD’s are Projects half Done and UFO’s are Unfinished Objects!)

New members will be most welcome to join us on Mondays from 2 -4 p.m. in the Session House. We are a small, friendly group who meet, work on projects for Church fundraisers but also do small items for donating to Colourful Blankets for charities at home and abroad.

Blytheswood, which Meetings are held every Monday until we completed in 2012 June when we close for Summer break.

After Church Teas / Coffees Refreshments continue to be available following the weekly Sunday service. These are served at the back of the church by a very willing team of volunteers on a rota basis, who undertake the duty on dates of their own choosing. Come along and enjoy friendship, fellowship and an opportunity to get to know your fellow members. Sang is normally available too and enjoys informal conversation with all the groups.

Wednesday Coffees Weekly Coffee Mornings are held on Wednesdays in the Session House from 10.00 – 11.30am.

If you are free on a Wednesday morning come along and join us for coffee or tea and sample the very good home baking for yourselves. We would be delighted to see you there! You can be sure of a very warm welcome!

Next session we will be calling on members or non-members, to take the place of our much valued long standing volunteers who will be retiring. Please give this some consideration. Elma and Joyce would be pleased to discuss this with you if you are interested.

St Mungo's house group We meet weekly at 7.30 pm on Thursdays, to read some scripture and discuss its relevance to life today. It is interesting to share our differing views. Then we have a cup of tea and a chat. If you think you would be interested, you are more than welcome to join us at 27 Church Street.

St. Mungo’s News Flower Rota My name is Ann Anderson and I have recently taken over the flower rota. Can I ask the members of the congregation who generously donate the flowers to check the date allocated to them and get back to me if there are any problems and I will do my best to resolve any issues arising.

Please note I have changed the delivery rota to ensure a fairer distribution for those involved.

If there is anyone who would like to take a turn arranging the flowers I would be most grateful to hear from them as we are really struggling to find new arrangers.

THE STORY BEHIND THE HYMN

Highland Cathedral I'm always being asked “who wrote Highland Cathedral?”

And “what is its story?” For a good few years I thought I knew some of the story, but I didn't. Someone once told me that it was derived from an old Isle of Lewis psalm tune, but it wasn't.

The tune was composed in 1982 for a Highland Games in Germany, by 2 Germans, Michael Korb and Uli Roever.

Highland Cathedral was produced, arranged, and composed

by Uli Roever and Michael Korb as a music single in 1982 with Michel Korb on bagpipes.

Michael Korb always had a special liking for bagpipe music.

When he finished school in 1974 and went to Berlin, he took lessons with the Pipe Major of a Scottish battalion. When the Scots left Berlin, Michael Korb went to Edinburgh where he took daily bagpipe lessons with the 80-year-old master, Paddy Atkinson. During the day he practised in Paddy's garden, but at night he practised in the woods because of the neighbours. Right from the start the 2 composers of the tune were convinced of its chances of success, but the publishing companies were not. Despite this, the tune has found its way into people's hearts, sometimes in unusual ways.

One way, of course, is as a hymn tune, and it has found its way into CH4, number 336. The whole tune is not used since the middle bars are not contained in the hymn, but nevertheless, it makes a good hymn tune sung to words by Leith Fisher, 1941-2009. The first line is “Christ is our light, the bright and morning star”. It makes for good 22

congregational singing.

For a tune written as recently as 1982, Highland Cathedral has had phenomenal success. As a “Scottish” tune written by 2 Germans, it has been exceptionally well-received in Scotland. Here are a few notable claims to fame:Highland Cathedral was the Royal Hong Kong Police anthem under British rule which ended in 1997.

It is a popular wedding song.

Highland Cathedral was featured in one of the most famous British film productions, “Four Weddings and a Funeral” Pop star Madonna chose Highland Cathedral for her church wedding ceremony in Scotland in December 2000.

The CD “Highland Cathedral” by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards has become a bestseller and the most successful bagpipe CD in the world.

Despite the great popularity of the tune, it would be wrong to forget the words. Those in CH4 were written by Leith Fisher, a Church of Scotland minister born in Greenock in 1941, and who died on 13th March 2009. He was described as being one of the ablest Church of Scotland ministers of his generation. He retired as minister of Wellington Church in 2006. As well as being a fine preacher, and exceptional parish minister, he had a gift for words as the author of commentaries on gospels and the writer of hymns, seven of which made their way into CH4.

Having spent so much space talking about the tune of this hymn, let us finish with Leith Fisher's words for verse 3 of CH4 number 336, “Christ is our Light” “Christ is our joy! Transforming wedding guest!

Through water turned to wine the feast was blessed.

as your disciples did in Galilee.�

I hope you enjoyed getting to know some of the background of this popular hymn. Over the years, the tune has not been one of my favourites, but at long last I think I'm starting to like it!

Book of Remembrance This book forms a lasting memorial of simple dignity to the departed and occupies a special place within the Church. Inscriptions need not necessarily be for deceased Church members, but are available for anyone who wishes to remember a loved one in this way.Every day throughout the year the Book is on display, open at the page commemorating the date of death of those whose names are entered. It is hoped that families will regard the continued preservation of St Mungo’s Parish Church as a fitting memorial to their loved ones and any gift will go to the Fabric Fund.

The minimum charge for an entry, which covers the cost of the inscription by a calligrapher, is £15.

Members in care homes The Home Visit group have attempted to include members in care homes among their visits. However, it has become obvious that our information on members in homes is out-of-date and inaccurate. We are often not informed of the details for members moving into care homes, or those who are no longer there.
