Link Award Supports Hospital Drivers Service From early beginnings in 2004 when Reg Ironside ran the service with 4 drivers and financial support from North Cornwall Primary Care Trust, the service has come a long way. It is going from strength to strength with 11 experienced drivers who work together to maintain a constant cover for the area. There are drivers in Delabole, St Kew, Tregellist, Trelights, Polzeath and Rock.

This year 11 drivers carried out 118 trips and covered 7985 milestotals are double those of 2017.

Most trips were to Treliske with a few to Wadebridge, Bodmin, Derriford and Newquay. Not only do the drivers have to consider time for each journey to get the patient to their appointment but they need to be good navigators

Reasonable waiting time is given for free but the mileage is charged at 45p per mile and any extra charges such as parking or tolls are also paid by the patient direct to the driver.

This cuts out administrative costs.

Water Refill Station Opened

In April, thanks to local fund raising, a new, free water bottle refill station was opened on Polzeath beach to cut down on the need for single use plastic bottle. This is thought to be one of the first free refill stations in the country.

All of us at Polzeath Marine Conservation Group are passionate about protecting our marine environment for future generations to enjoy.

The water refill station is one of our key projects, which ties in with the ReFill Campaign that began in Cornwall but is now nation-wide.

We know that there are about 8 million tons of plastic that go into the sea every year and all that plastic is still with us, damaging our precious wild life.

Thank you to all those people who joined us for the opening of the refill station on April 7th and especially Joe Absolom, who opened the Refill Station with his great sense of humour, and Sharps Brewery for their special refreshments which we all enjoyed. We hope that this refill station will encourage all of us to reconsider buying water in plastic bottles and refill our own bottles instead with clean free Cornish drinking water.

Fund raising for the project started slowly but then we had a terrific boost from the Postcode Local Trust who gave us £2,000, followed by Sea-changers with a donation of £500. Support from local organisations was really encouraging. We received funds from Cornwall Council’s Community Chest £1,000 and both our Parish Councils, St. Minver Highlands and St Minver Lowlands, who gave us £500 each. Polzeath Area Residents Association gave us £250 and the Quinnian Trust £500. We would like to say a big thank you to South West Water, Luke and Dingle, and Peter Watson who installed and connected the station free of charge.

To sum up, we thank everyone who has supported us by donating money, giving advice and working for free. It is an amazing result.

But it’s not complete yet. With the support we have had we can announce that the project will be expanded so we can site another unit on Rock beach soon And we don’t really want to stop there.

I think our message is: if we can do it, anyone can do it!

David Topliffe Resigns from Link Our Distribution Manager, David Topliffe, has resigned from the committee.

David has been distributing the magazine since 2004 - that’s 79 issues. He initially responded to a plea printed in issue 136 for someone to take over the distribution from Dave Mattos and he has done the job ever since.

The Link committee thank David for carrying out the job so efficiently and wish him well for the future.

Rock now has a mobile Post Office

Because the permanent Post Office in Rock was closed a new mobile service has been introduced. It parks near Rock chapel on Mondays and Thursdays: The mobile van parks by the Chapel and is in Rock on the following days and times: Monday - 11.00 - 12.30 Thursday 11.00 - 12.30 Customers are offered a free cup of tea and a biscuit!

Letter from Paul Howard Head of St Minver School Dear Link, A long walk in the woods is the reason for me leaving St Minver School after 14 years! An odd statement, but true! Over Easter, my wife, Anne, and I walked the Kumano Kodo, a World Heritage Pilgrimage in the mountainous forests of Southern Japan. Truly breath taking and, in a way, life changing. During this walk through the wilderness, I realised I needed a change in my career.

I have been part of the St Minver School family for just under 14 years, the longest I have worked at any school. In that time I have had the pleasure of working with Nick Lane, Dave Cantin, Phil Banks and most recently Sue Cox as school leaders. Initially, I was employed as Deputy Head and Year 6 teacher, but that role developed into Head of School in recent years. Walking through the forests made me realise there was much more to life than looking at a spreadsheet on a computer monitor, day in and day out!

I wanted to get back to what I did well, teaching in a classroom! So, it’s time to spread my wings and fly to pastures new.

I am delighted to say that Mrs Jo Rodwell, a close colleague, currently Joint Head of School at St. Breock School, will be replacing me as Head of School at St Minver School. Jo is an experienced teacher and school leader, and is incredibly excited at the prospect of working at St Minver School. I wish her every success and happiness, as she will be joining a truly phenomenal team and a wonderful group of children and parents.

May I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and kindness throughout my time at St Minver School. The St Minver community has been incredible and I have made many friends over the years. I look forward to hearing about all the exciting happenings at the school in the future.

Bat Nights at Pentire Head, Tuesday July 31 8.30pm and Tuesday August 14 8pm Join National Trust rangers for an evening all about bats. Starting with a talk about British bats, we will then see and hear greater horseshoe bats emerge after sunset from old mine workings. Talks start promptly at start times. RADICAL ROCKPOOLING

The St Minver Church Fete will be held on Wednesday August 15th on the St Minver Club Cricket Field starting at 2pm. Thanks to the Cricket Club for allowing the use of the field.

This year, the fete is a week earlier than usual. This is all down to the tides! If we had held it at the normal time it would have coincided with ‘Camel Week’ making it difficult, or impossible, for people to attend both events.

The St Minver Silver Band will be there to entertain us and get our feet tapping, perhaps while you enjoy a refreshing break with delicious home made cakes. There will be home made jams and preserves, cakes, plants and craft items to buy, bargains to be sought and an amazing assortment of nearly new books.

All this together with our games, both traditional and unusual, make for a lovely afternoon out. Parking is free, entrance is free and your dog family members are very welcome, (although their owners must behave and keep them on leads!), so please come along and enjoy the fun.

Winter course work at St Enodoc

A rolling programme of work on the Church Course at St Enodoc golf course over the winter has enhanced the playability of the championship links as well as the appearance One of the main renovation exercises carried out by the club was the re-levelling of the tee complexes on the 1st, 5th and 10th holes and at the same time increasing the size of the tees in order to protect them during the busy summer season.

2018 St Minver Church Fete is a week earlier than usual

The work on the 10th hole that winds past St Enodoc Church has made this notoriously difficult hole easier to tackle whilst improving the appearance. The invasive and overgrown scrub area that ran along the length of the hole has been removed to improve visibility when playing the approach shot and the stream beside the green has been widened.

The fairway bunkers on the 13th hole running along the back of the Church have been re-profiled to make the hole more forgiving and cosmetically appealing.

Consideration has also been given to lady golfers with the construction of a new forward ladies tee on the 501 yard, par 5 16th hole. The impetus for this change was partly as a result of a recommendation by the golf course architect, Tom Doak, and partly down to the fact that the ladies have been struggling on this tee since it was moved 75 yards back in 2006. The extra length plus the prevailing wind made it a very challenging hole, but now a good golfer should reach the green in three and a competent one in four, making it much more manageable.

“Nicole, The Greatest Shark Story Ever Told”

Thursday June 7 7pm - 8.30pm at the Tubestation, Polzeath Sarah Faragher on the Stand Up Paddleboard element of the competition On Saturday 5th May the ‘Mad Hatter Sports Events’ team held their first Swim-SUP ( Stand Up Paddleboard)-Run triathlon at Polkerris beach. In this event, the traditional bike leg was replaced with a stand up paddle board.

The 50 competitors had to complete a 750m sea swim, followed by a 1km stand-up paddle, before returning to the beach for the final leg, a 5km run along the South West Coastal path to Par looping back to finish on Polkerris beach.

The beautiful weather and near perfect conditions saw the event to be a great success, with Sarah Faragher of St Minver winning first place in the women’s event, beating Heather Fell, an Olympic Pentathlon silver medallist, into second . Sarah was also third overall!

A Busy August At St Endellion!

Never a dull moment during Spring time at St Breock School Wadebridge Music Festival As ever, St Breock had a strong presence at the annual Wadebridge Festival of Music and Speech. As a school, we highly value the opportunity for performance and for celebrating a wealth of talent across the arts and to see our young participants taking to the stage with such confidence and assuredness was inspiring for us all. This year, we had representation in the Public Speaking, Bible Reading, Verse Speaking, Choral Speaking, Choral and individual instrumental classes. We were very proud to pick up an ‘Outstanding’ mark of 90 for our Key Stage Two choir, led by Mrs Arnold. Their medley of songs from Les Miserables left not a dry eye in the house – amazing!

Graham Renwick says farewell to St Breock School

Also during March, we waved a fond farewell to Graham Renwick, who has long been a firm friend of St Breock School. Graham was Residential Trips a member of the school’s Governing Body In March of course, we had a little Cornish for a number of years, before supporting drama with a flurry of snow and ice! While we enjoyed a brief play in the snow, our Year St Breock’s transition into the Aspire Multi Academy Trust, of which -as Hub Councillor 6’s suffered the consequences of the travel – he was a trusted member of the board. Jamie gives St Minver Probus Club first hand account of the sinking of HMS Coventry

The club had its first speaker meeting under the new Chairman, Melwyn Roskilly, who was clearly enjoying the experience (especially the gavel).

We are going to be in good hands for the rest of the club year as Ross did not put a foot wrong today. He introduced our guest speaker, Commodore Jamie Miller, DBE RN. In our civilised society, very few people, even those in the Armed Forces, have experienced the savagery of war at sea where you face two enemies - the enemy and the sea. So to hear first-hand from one who has was a rare privilege. Commodore Miller was on the destroyer HMS Coventry when she was sunk by Argentinian aircraft during the Falklands War. He was seriously wounded but he survived, unlike 19 of the crew, who lost their lives.

Jamie must have told his story dozens of times, but it has lost none of its impact. We listened in stunned silence as we heard what for most of us at least, was the first live actual account of being attacked at sea. First, the fear had to be overcome – they were under threat from under the sea, from surface ships and from the air.

Although HMS Coventry had a great turn of speed (31 knots), that was little use against fighter jets. It was a clear, sunny day and they could be seen for 40 miles. They had been identified as a target over an hour ago on

the “tethered goat” principle - if you want to catch a tiger… so they knew what was coming.

They knew the enemy was intent on sinking them and had the capability. They shot down three Argentinian aircraft but inevitably there were more. Mirage jets attacked using cannon and bombs at very low level. One bomb struck the bridge. The second penetrated the engineroom starting a huge fire. They lost their computers and engines and, with Coventry listing 30 degrees, knew they had to abandon ship.

Because of the heel,half the liferafts were out of action so Jamie and many others, it was ‘jump in the water’ - a dangerous thing to do. Two of the crew were killed by

striking the stabilisers and Jamie hit the hull but, once in the water, reached a life-raft. Its safety was illusory as it was unable to row clear of the ship which by then was capsizing rapidly, on top of them.

Jamie almost drowned when the life-raft capsized, forced over by the listing ship. He and others managed to pull themselves back onto Coventry by the bridge windscreen wipers, believe it or not! (thus he was sunk twice on the same day, and was eventually rescued by helicopter.)

We had an account of a surreal episode on the QEII, where survivors were taken, and dined in the ‘Queen’s Grill’ with best wines at NAAFI prices! That was but light relief, after a talk high in genuine drama.

Port Isaac’s Trio and Pisces Port Isaac and the surrounding area also have a communjity magazine, TRIO, which, like Link is run by volunteers. It also has a heritage arts group, PISCES, which promotes culture and the arts.

In this article, the editor of TRIO, Dee Littlechild, gives the background story.

There can be no better record of Port Isaac’s social history than Trio and the PISCES exhibitions. Together they paint a vivid picture of village life, showing that whilst the people may change, the concerns and causes and good heart of Port Isaac remain the same.

Back in 1982, ( the year after Link was launched)Robin Penna, produced the first issue of Trio, the name chosen because it would include news from Port Isaac, Port Gaverne and Trelights. Robin, supported by Fred Thompson, was at the helm until they retired in 1999.

Sam and Dee were persuaded to take on Trio. Dee’s experience was hand cutting galley proofs and manually doing a layout (the original cut and paste!) - but surely it couldn’t be that difficult to do on the computer … and she had four whole weeks to learn!

After eight years they decided life would be easier if they printed Trio themselves. The “Beast” printing machine arrived and the September

2007 issue was sent to him from Dee’s computer and a collated, folded, stapled, black and white copy came out the other end. In 2011 he was replaced with an even more all-singing, all dancing “Beast” … issue number 325 was printed in full colour. 600 copies full of news and views are now printed each month, with readers in Australia, the US and Europe.

In 2010, PISCES (Port Isaac Shared Community Exhibition Space) began. With Heritage Lottery funding, an enthusiastic bunch of volunteers felt it was important to collect, record and exhibit the history of Port Isaac and district and preserve it for future generations.

Port Isaac was becoming increasingly popular as a television location and it was felt that the real heritage was gradually being forgotten.

PISCES has now established a remarkable collection of exhibitions. There is an interactive touch screen within the exhibition space in St Peter’s Church, Port Isaac and a comprehensive

John Warne Awarded Legion d’Honneur Medal John Warne, a former Head of Maths and Science at Wadebridge School, and known by many as ‘BJ’, was awarded the Legion d’Honneur medal by the government of France, and presented with it by Commodore Jamie Miller RN, with members of the Royal British Legion present on May 11th.

John, now 95, joined the army on January 8th 1943 and took part in the 1944 Normandy Campaign. He was in the 147 Infantry Brigade which was part of the 49th West Riding Division and was a wireless operator.

John recalls that en route for Normandy, his ship was hit by a bomb which went right down into the hold without exploding.

It was removed by two engineers who dropped it over the side and were subsequently decorated for their bravery. He continued to serve in France, Belgium and Holland until the end of 1944, whereupon he was redeployed to India and hence to Burma.

The occasion took place at John’s home and was celebrated by family and friends.

News from St Minver School It’s been another fun packed term at St Minver School. The school has been participating in the ‘Plastic Free Schools’ project which is promoted

by Surfers Against Sewage.

This has included reducing the amount of single use plastics brought onto the school site, clearing the site of any litter, creating posters promoting reduction of single use plastics and even writing to Scott Mann MP, voicing our concern. In addition Year 6 participated in a beach clean at Polzeath, supported by The Polzeath Marine Conservation Group and were amazed at the variety of plastics they discovered!

We also enjoyed our own Spring Music concert here in school, a celebration of all the marvellous musical talent we have in the school, culminating in the now traditional staff and parent band! Very entertaining!!!

Marjorie Blamey Celebrates her 100th Birthday

Trewiston Lodge Nursing Home laid on a special treat for Marjorie Blamey MBE when she recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Marjorie grew up in the Isle of Wight.

She was always interested in wildlife, drawing and photography. She became an actress after attending RADA and, in 1944, she met and married Cornishman Philip Blamey. At the end

of World War 2 they moved back to Cornwall to become dairy farmers near Liskeard.

They have four children, nine grandchildren and 18 great grand children. Philip died in 2014.

In 1966 she began painting again. her wildlife pictures were seen by botanical authors and soon Collins published ‘Wild flowers of Britain and N.Europe’,

eventually selling over 1,000,000 copies. Over 30 books followed. She is celebrated as the best botanical artist of her time she and Philip travelled the world painting flowers and photographing everything they saw. Marjorie finally retired at 90 years old and now lives at Trewiston Lodge Nursing Home, St Minver.

by Morwenna Vernon Welcome to a new regular feature for The Link. ‘Aren’t We Lucky’ will be an opportunity to remind ourselves of some of the hidden gems in our area which are often overlooked due to the draw of our stunning coastal footpath.

Coronation Park, Wadebridge I knew that Coronation Park in Wadebridge existed but I’m embarrassed to admit I hadn’t visited it until recently.

I decided to enter the park from the gateway along Polmorla Road so I parked my car at the old cattle market and walked along the road to the entrance which is clearly marked, opposite Fisher’s Garage. The zigzagging paths means that the slope is very gentle and is ideal for families with young children and buggies or those who enjoy a short walk. The park is well maintained by Wadebridge Town Council.

The path was smooth, even, and well maintained, zig zagging up through the woodland which was full of wildflowers. I have never seen wild hellebores in such profusion as well as primroses, wild garlic, bluebells and campion. The variety of trees and shrubs also meant that there was plenty of wildlife and I’m sure I heard 34

The site was presented to the town by the Molesworth family and was opened on 9th August 1902 to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII. It was due to take place on June 26th, which was the original date for the coronation, but along with the coronation itself and other events across the country, had to be delayed as the King had appendicitis.

Summer is here! It’s the perfect time of the year to enjoy the simple things in life, whether it be a picnic in the dunes, a swim in the sea, making a daisy chain or building a den in the garden. With so many activities on our doorstep, there is plenty to keep you entertained during the summer holidays. Nici

Gardening Fun Ready, Steady, Grow - Herbs

Why not get your hands dirty and grow your very own herb garden? Herbs are easy to grow, look great and you can eat them! Find a sunny corner and get started…

1. Find a pot. The bigger it is the more plants you can fit in it. It can be any shape you like: round, rectangular, etc but it must have holes in the bottom. Cover the base with a layer of small stones to help water drain out.

2. Fill you pot with compost (ideally John Innes no 3) 3. Dig a hole big enough to easily fit your herb into.

4. Take the pot with the herb in it and turn it upside down. Gently lift the pot off so you can see the roots. Carefully plant in the hole and press in the soil around it.

5. Leaving a little growing room around each plant, keep planting until your pot is full. A large pot will take approximately three plants.

6. Water your herb pot and don’t forget to keep watering regularly.

7. Make some name tags for your plants so you know which is which. Be creative! Painted stones or decorated lolly sticks make fun labels.

Our Featured Artists Andrew Jago, Andrew Palmer, Mim Aylett and Brom Irwin Local artists, Andrew Jago, Mim Aylett, Brom Irwin and Andrew Palmer are all inspired by the local land and seascapes and have collaborated to produce an exhibition of their contemporary art.

Andrew Palmer came up with the idea of a joint exhibition, bringing together four local artists, three of whom had previously collaborated. “The Rock Institute is such a great place to have an exhibition, it’s a lovely light and airy environment in which to bring together a variety of talented artists.”

Andrew Jago has a background in drawing practice which has enabled him to discern tonal values and bring atmosphere to the subject. ‘‘Painting outdoors provides a tangible connection with the landscape and also sharpens observation.’’ Andrew has lived in St Mabyn most of his life all his life and studied graphic design at Falmouth

‘Looking East to Brae Hill’ by Andrew Jago College of Art. He planned to work in London as a graphic designer but chose to stay in Cornwall, starting his career by painting portraits of dogs and horses and supplementing his income by working as a builder and gardener.

It was an exhibition at

Carhart, Edmonton, to which he contributed some work which was the catalyst for moving into landscapes and his career has progressed since then.

The journey so far In 1998, we moved from North Devon with our three young sons and bought a small business on the high street of Wadebridge as we saw growth and potential in this then market town.

Our daughter arrived one year later.

We settled into the very welcoming community and it was time to make the Granary grow into what it is today – a small friendly coffee shop and restaurant.

Keeping to classic good old fashioned style cooking with opening hours to suit our customers and family life – closed on Sundays for quality time with our young family.

Wadebridge Sea Scouts In 2001 I joined Wadebridge Sea Scouts as a volunteer to help young people get ready for the big wide world. Today I am very proud to be Group Scout Leader and working with a dedicated team.

Camel Valley Motor has now started an apprenticeship with Jamie Cycle Club In 2002 I joined Camel Vale Motor Cycle club and continued to pursue my passion for off road motor cycling, Motor Cross and Enduro and Trials – hence the title ‘The Flying Chef’.

My three sons have inherited my love of motorcycles and although all three are now in the Royal Engineers, they continue to compete at events across the country.

My daughter enjoyed Avalon Theatre and working in the restaurant and a local pub to earn some money and she

John’s ‘A Taste of Cornwall’ Ingredients For 4 Portions 1 Gary Dutton Hogs Pudding 1 Bag Mixed Salad 1 Mustard Cress 10 Cherry Tomatoes ¼ Cucumberchopped 1 Small Red PepperChopped 1 Red Onionchopped

French Dressing 4 Rashers Back Bacon 12 New Potatoes 12 Button Mushrooms 3 oz Garlic Butter Crushed Black Pepper & Salt Fresh Chopped Parsley

Wash salad ingredients and toss together.

Place on four plates and add dressing.

Cook potatoes in salted water. Cool and roughly slice.

Grill bacon until crispy. Cool and slice.

Slice mushrooms and hogs pudding.

Melt butter in frying pan. Add bacon, potato and mushrooms .Cook for three minutes. Add hogs pudding and mix together for 2 more minutes.

Add a little crushed black pepper and salt.

Put pan under a preheated grill for 5 minutes, stirring ingredients every minute.

Add parsley and serve on top of salad.

‘The Link’ Sponsors Educational Windbreak Project

This magazine has awarded Polzeath Marine Conservation Group the money to purchase two themed educational windbreaks. The project was inspired by a visit to Australia. The windbreaks display pictures and interesting facts about sea creatures.

Tina Robinson said “We hope to design about ten of these on different topics, grey seal populations, bottle nose dolphins, sea birds, amazing crabs and jelly fish and of course our sharks. We also plan windbreaks to highlight the man-made threats to our oceans such as ghost gear and plastic.

“The windbreaks are printed on both sides at child reading height and are transportable. They can be used individually or in a group as a maze on the beach. Above all they are fun.

“We are lucky to have secured funding for the first two from the Link magazine. By showcasing our marine life we can increase awareness of conservation and how our actions now impact on our future. We aim to inspire and motivate children to respect and learn how we can look after our precious natural resources.

Conservation and protection will be the link that connects them all.

The History of Watches by local jeweller Stuart Robertson

Stuart is the proprietor of Robertson’s Jewellers Ltd. Stuart has studied, and qualified in all aspects of his trade with The National Association of Goldsmiths.

Stuart grew up in Rock and has always been a keen supporter of ‘The Link’.

The history of watches is really quite complex and intriguing.

Watches are not just functional, everyday objects showing us the time, they are personal expressions of fashion and status. They make significant gifts and may well become treasured heirlooms linking generations, or keepsakes marking significant life events such as birthdays, weddings or anniversaries.

The wristwatch is a recent addition to timekeeping.

The mechanical clock was invented around 1300 AD in Western Europe, but it was not until the first half of the 15th century that a spring driven, portable timepiece made its debut.

The wristwatch as we know it today only became fashionable just over 100

years ago.

Throughout most of the 19th century, pocket watches were prized possessions. A man would have worn his watch in a side pocket of his waistcoat, with the watch chain draped across his front from the pocket to a buttonhole. Using a watch like this would have been quite an ordeal, as the watch had to be removed from the pocket, the case opened, the time read, then the whole process reversed to safely stow the watch again.

During the first half of the century, ladies had worn pendant watches. These were similar to men’s pocket watches, except they were smaller and worn around the neck on long chains.

Eventually, in the 1880s, ladies started fixing their pendant watches onto bands of leather and wearing on the wrist. The wristwatch provided portable time,and was easier and quicker to read than a pendant watch.

Men did not adopt this style of wearing a watch initially, but only started cautiously wearing wristwatches at the

time of the First World War. Despite the best efforts of the manufacturers of the time, in the late 1940s, the wristwatch was still considered by many as ‘feminine’.

Quartz Crystal Movement

By the 1970s, the wristwatch was completely reinvented with the development of electronic parts. The quartz crystal movement in an electronic watch is the watch’s beating heart, a vibrating unit that serves the same purpose as the balance wheel and hairspring in a mechanical watch. A quartz crystal vibrates when electricity is applied to it.

The crystal’s vibrations are

very constant, usually around 32,768 cycles a second. The watch’s integrated circuit measures and subdivides the vibrations or cycles, allowing electronic watches to keep precise time to within tenths of hundredths of seconds.

News from Wadebridge School Cornwall School Mining Games 2018

We had an exciting opportunity for our students to be involved and compete in the Cornwall School Mining Games on Monday 26th March 2018!

The International Mining Games (IMG) ran from Thursday March 29th to Sunday April 1st.

The 2018 chapter was hosted at King Edward Mine, near Camborne, the original home to Camborne School of Mines .

Each school had the opportunity to enter a team of 6 Year 8 students to compete in the Cornwall School Mining Games. Our school was paired with one of the University teams competing in the International Mining Games.

Wadebridge School was paired with the University of Kentucky the ‘Wildcats’. This gave our students the opportunity to learn all about Higher Education and immerse themselves in the world of Mining as part of an internationally recognised competition!

This event informed our students in a number of areas in the curriculum including: -The composition of the earth -The rock cycle and the formation of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks -Earth as a source of resources -How physical processes change landscapes -Local history – Mining heritage

-Select and use various mathematical calculations to survey a small area -Supporting students’ development of reading, writing and research skills.

The International Mining Games was an experience they will never forget.

RNLI lifeguards return to the beaches

The RNLI is reminding people heading to the coast to put safety first and head to a lifeguarded beach.

RNLI lifeguards returned to the beaches in time for the Bank Holiday.

As in previous years, RNLI lifeguards have spent the last few weeks visiting local primary schools in the South West as part of the ‘Meet the Lifeguards’ programme, educating youngsters on how to stay safe at the beach.

Steve Instance, RNLI Community Safety Partner in the south west, says: “It’s that time again when the RNLI lifeguards make a welcome return to beaches around the south west coastline. We’re hopeful for sunshine but whatever the weather throws at us, we can expect the beaches to be busy as visitors and locals enjoy their holidays.

“If you are planning on getting in the water, it’s worth remembering to check the sea temperature, it may still very cold, so it’s important people wear a

suitable wetsuit and bring warm clothes to change into.

“We urge beachgoers to head to an RNLI lifeguarded beach and to swim and bodyboard in the supervised area marked out by the red and yellow flags. Try and stay within your depth and follow the lifeguard’s advice. If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help. If you see someone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard, or if you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

“It’s also important to check the tide times, which are available at the local lifeboat stations, harbour offices and at the entrance to all RNLI lifeguarded beaches or by searching your nearest beach online.

Always take a means of calling for help in case you should get caught out.’

Fitness with Julia Move it or Lose it!

The Importance of Exercise for Balance Losing balance is one of the most common problems with old age which can lead to falls and disability .

With the help of good fitness advice we can build a sure foundation based on exercises that build and strengthen muscles .

With loss of activity the body will lose strength , endurance and flexibility and basic movements like walking can become a challenge. Keep exercising and focus on working all the major muscle groups !

An example of a good staple exercise is the squat . This can be done free standing with or without weights, with a ball against the wall, sit to stand repeats on a chair or

Keeping the muscles strong and the joints more mobile will enhance agility , so those who exercise will see benefits more so than those who opt for a more sedentary lifestyle .

It's essential to engage in some exercises which destabilise the body , so the body can learn to stabilise itself rather than relying on a fixed object to support us .

In all my classes I teach whether it's an aerobic dance session , legs bums or tums toning class or a seated chair fitness class I encourage my clients to work on their balance and postural stability at a level which suits them and incorporate exercises accordingly . Over the many years I have been teaching I can truly say that that I have seen huge improvements in individuals who have needed chair support and have moved on to freestanding with confidence . From this a greater sense of independence is achieved !

I use fitness balls to lie or sit on to allow clients to take one foot off the floor and include exercises standing on tip toes .With exercises like these and many others as well our

core muscles are challenged and over time co ordination , range of movement and agility is greatly improved.

Once a client is more confident , everyday activities such as getting on/off a bus or walking up steps becomes easier . In my classes I work on strengthening the muscles that stabilise the ankles,

Published by Bantam Press. Hardcover - £12.99 from Wadebridge Books.

Listeners to, and viewers of, BBC News will be familiar with the distinctive voice of wheelchair-bound Frank Gardner. As security correspondent he is on air virtually daily in these troubled times of nerve-agent poisoning, chemical weapons in Syria, and the wider subject of the ‘War on Terror’. A former Green Jacket Officer and Saudi banker, as a fluent Arabic-speaking journalist he just survived an assassination attempt by Al-Qaeda gunmen in 2004; tragically his cameraman did not.

Some of the scenes, particularly in Columbia, are not for the squeamish, and the reader will require patience to cope with the plethora of professional acronyms, all of which are explained and add to the credibility of the plot. This is an exciting, fast-moving thriller, with a slightly implausible ending, but with sufficient promise to make one look forward to the next novel.

He has written about his early experiences in “Blood & Sand”, a highly acclaimed and immensely readable book, but this is his first novel: it is a remarkable debut. His hero is Luke Carlton, an ex-Special Boat Service Commando, now under a short term contract with MI6. This ingenious tale begins in Columbia, has close connections with North Korea, touches Cornwall, and concludes frighteningly in London on Remembrance Sunday.

It is not surprising that Gardner draws heavily on his insider knowledge, and one suspects that his hero has many of the qualities the author once possessed. Intelligent coverage of the political background, both inside and outside the security services, together with an emphasis on the role of the Special Forces in protecting the country in dangerous times, provide sharp authenticity.

St Minver Cricket Club Needs You! St Minver Cricket Club started in 1892. It is a private ground with an area of just over 2 hectares and lies just behind the Perceval Institute, opposite The Fourways Inn and The Old Forge Garage.

Prior to being a cricket field it was an ordinary farm field. The Village Squire who lived in St Minver House formed the Cricket Club and, since then, it has blossomed into a popular and successful club, winning various league titles on many occasions.

The future of the club is now in jeopardy! The club has only managed to raise a single adult team this year and urgently needs volunteers to take on the principal offices of Secretary and Treasurer on the committee.

The club welcomes players (male and female) of all ages to join in and play as much or as little as they like.

The club also has a busy and energetic junior section with over 30 juniors receiving regular, professional coaching every Thursday (see below for times) so the long-term prospects for the club are positive.

A healthy and active Cricket Club is an important part of any village community. It would be tragic if St. Minver Cricket Club, which has been running for over 125 years, were to disappear.

The club would welcome any support, suggestions and help to ensure they are able to continue offering a wonderful social and sporting facility to

Country Diary from Cobb Cottage Written and Illustrated by Joan Cockett It was the March 1st, when the ‘Beast from the East’ swept in. Snow on the Hoe, blizzard on the Lizard . . . Cornwall in chaos as the peninsula turned white and the media had a great time! I looked from the windows to see a garden transformed. The skeletal shapes of trees and shrubs black against the snow. Agitated blackbirds and robins waited by the porch door to be fed. For three days the neighbourhood ground to a halt as ice made many roads impassable. The forecasts were very accurate: the day before the snow fell a notice appeared on the door of Trebetherick Stores -, “Please ring before coming to the shop tomorrow as we may be out making snowmen!” Indeed they were! Young Brooks from the shop’s family made a 6ft snowman, photographed and later made into a card, sold at the stores. For many children it was the first snow they had seen, and there was great excitement.

I did a quick study of the garden from the window; I couldn’t help thinking the title should read ‘Beauty and the Beast from the East!’ It was a rare moment, quietness and stillness being the day’s enchantment. After the thaw a few warmer days followed and then, not so exciting or welcome, there was another fall of snow. “It will move in at 3pm“ said the forecast, and it did on the dot. This time, however, the thaw came overnight Spring still seemed a long way off. Easter was cold but with some sun. Days of gloom were relieved by those rare occasions when the sky was a clear washed blue and a pale sun illuminated the bare trees.

As I write we are in the second week of April and at last we have some warm sunny days - blissfully dry. I was standing at the window looking down on primroses, the first perennial geraniums in flower, and a scattering of bluebells, thinking “we’re almost there . . .” when a beautiful large bubble came drifting across, glinting with rainbow colours. Don’t burst, I prayed; it continued drifting, over the wall, and I imagined it being carried on the breeze, down the lane and out to sea, bouncing lightly on the waves. . . My reverie was interrupted by the laughter of a small boy in next door’s garden . . .

The highest standards of food safety and animal welfare should be adhered to in this country and imports of inferior quality should not be allowed to compete in our markets. Time will tell whether the policymakers agree.

Parliamentary Update from Scott MannTheMP travelling Post Office, Second Homes

According to reports by Cornwall Live earlier this year, there are 20,000 holiday lets in Cornwall, with nearly 8,000 registered as businesses. This exempts them from council tax and potentially makes them eligible for Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR), which allows up to 100 per cent relief depending upon the rateable value of the property.

If a holiday let qualifies for full SBRR, then the owner will not pay any business rates as well as zero council tax. A property is considered a holiday let if it is available for let for at least 140 days per year.

I have spoken to the Local Government Minister , Richi Sunak MP, about this several times, and I know he understands the challenges we face in Cornwall with second home ownership and vacant properties.

In response, the minister confirmed that he was investigating the loophole that allows holiday home owners to avoid council tax and business rates and allow councils to charge double council tax for properties that have been empty for two years.

Gardening’s Greatest Tips Part 1 Gardening for me has become more relaxed over the past ten years. It started for me when I was just six years old when my dad had me wrapping up 3 parsnips seeds in a Rizla cigarette paper which he would then plant it into the ground as this would speed up germination and help in some way to reduce canker as the parsnips grew. My dad would give me a shilling when I had wrapped a whole packet of parsnip seeds. Today some would call that slave labour.

An aluminium tin can with both ends cut off and a piece of cucumber placed in the can at either end will send slugs and snails away, the reaction between aluminium and cucumber is said to produce a gas that slugs and snails don’t like.

Soak nettle and wormwood leaves in a bucket of water for a week and use the water as a spray against aphids. Also elder leaves react in the same way, spray undiluted.

Alternatively, grow alliums and catmint next to your roses this will help to combat aphids.

I have been fascinated for some time about medicinal plants; here are a few tonics to try.

For a reviving bath use mint and nettle to boost circulation or add pine which is refreshing For a soothing hand lotion soak marigold petals in almond oil for a couple of weeks. Also, to fight the onslaught of a cold, use rose hip berries, crush them and add boiling water - it makes a delicious tea.

I have shown over the years these tips have worked on many occasions but there can be no guarantee. For me, however, they are fun, rewarding and money saving.
