Light Up a Life Remembering Loved Ones at Christmas Cornwall Hospice Care’s annual Light up a Life campaign has just been launched with five services of remembrance to be held across the county during November and December.

This much loved hospice campaign offers everyone the opportunity to remember loved ones at this special time of year by entering their names in the books of remembrance and joining us at one of the celebration services. It is completely up to you whom you choose to remember in this way, whether it’s a friend, family member

or work colleague. They don’t have to have been cared for by the hospice in order for you to make a dedication.

We are currently taking entries for Light up a Life.

Leaflets can be picked up from any of our charity shops and at both hospices from mid-October onwards, or simply call the fundraising office on 01726 66868 for a form to be sent to you.

The celebration services offer the chance to come together with family and friends to remember the lives of those we have lost.

Wadebridge Choral Society at Christmas Wadebridge Choral Society is preparing for the Christmas concert at St Minver Church 7.30pm on Saturday December 19th Works to be performed include Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb and Schubert’s Mass in G. There will be plenty of carols too, some for the Choir and some for the audience to join in.

There will be readings too, with a Christmas flavour.

In the interval there will be mince pies and mulled wine to enhance the Christmas spirit.

This will be the final concert in the Choir’s 300th anniversary year.

The new line-up at Rock Sailing & Water Ski Club: Roger Williams, Wendy Williams and Jane Parr.

After 21 years of dedicated service Dave Parr is retiring as Commodore of Rock Sailing and Water Ski Club. His place will be taken by Roger Williams. An Economics graduate of the 70s, Roger had a career in advertising and marketing before selling his business and training as a garden designer in the late 90s. An up-country ‘pond’ sailor since 25, he first sailed at Rock in Camel Week 1993 and has not missed a year since. During that time he has raced Phantoms, Blazes and – more latterly – Shrimpers. He has been a Sailing Committee member for many years, is a trustee of Camel Estuary Youth sailing (CEYS). He is married to Wendy, with two children and Dilly, a Labradoodle dog.

Wendy will be joining him, together with Jane Parr (past Rear Commodore), also with 21 years of service, in a joint Rear Commodoreship. Jane’s long experience of club management will prove invaluable to the new team.

Born in Australia, Wendy worked in advertising until giving it up to raise a son and daughter in the 80s. She returned to work in the 90s as long-term private secretary to a captain of industry before leaving Oxfordshire with Roger to retire to Rock.

A recent convert to sailing, Wendy has taken to Shrimper racing like the proverbial duck, her competitive streak having been finely honed by over forty years of playing Bridge. She is also a Rock gig-rower and relaxes further by speed-walking the dog.

We wish the new team every success for the future.

Christmas will be celebrated at the Club on Christmas Eve when carols for all will be accompanied by the St Minver Silver Band. Compére for the evening will be Gus Guest. Mulled wine and mince pies will refresh one and all.

St Minver Probus Club At our September meeting a guest, a new member and two guest speakers were introduced. Lunch was followed by club business, then a talk by Eddie Old (prompted by Heather Jago), both of the Porteath Bee Centre.

“Well, follow that!” said the Probus member proposing a vote of thanks after the detailed and sincere talk. He was right – it was impossible, so I won’t attempt it either!

These are two people clearly entranced by the magic of bee-keeping for whom it has been their lives for many years. For Eddie it started with a sting on the nose and then he was hooked! (if you see what I mean). We learnt about the life-cycle of the queen and the drones (or, in the latter’s case, their death-cycle – you really wouldn’t want to be born a drone). Eddie explained that the queen lives productively for three years, then she is retired gracefully into a box with others until she dies a natural death. (unlike the drones, whose fate is less pleasant, apart from the six chosen by the queen to mate with her!)

We learnt about hives, which contain 50,000 bees each in the summer and about the harvesting of pollen for which the bees travel up to three miles, and still find their way back, which is pretty unbelievable. We heard the history of the Porteath Bee Centre, which developed from five hives to over 300 hives at one time, most of which, years later, were lost to disease. So they started again, and now have 160 hives ( which still sounds like an awful lot of work).

Bee-keeping is of course an ancient art, known to the world for 4,000 years. Honey is a wonderful substance, and has a shelf-life longer than the shelf. Bees produce far more than they need, and seem not to mind us benefitting.(if they did, 50,000 could do a bit of damage).

We learnt about the different flavours and textures of honey, about clear, crystal and creamed honeys, and about bees-wax, produced by the young bees.

We all know that bee populations are declining, and Heather and Eddie were obviously concerned about the loss of hedge-rows, agricultural practices and the effect of climate-change, all of which has led to this decline. However, they are in the fortunate position of being able to site their hives near cliffs, a good and sustainable source of wild flowers, which mitigates the first two influences.

This was a comprehensive talk, straight from the heart, and in fact, the only thing that could follow it was a selection of the bee-centred products sold at Porteath – not just wax candles and polish, but different honeys and most wonderful honey fudge, good enough to make anyone drool, including the owners of the 50,000 tiny eyes peering jealously in through the windows.

Chris Treglown Foundation ‘Another Openin’, Another Show’ graced St. Minver Church and The Waterfront, Polzeath, in late August. The tragic death in 2012 of Chris Treglown, a talented singer, resulted in the formation of a foundation in his memory, with a specific aim to aid promising singers both in Cornwall and in the vicinity of Cirencester where he trained.

MJ-UK is a company set up by distinguished Opera singer, Maria Jagusz, who, for the second year, led workshops for a week before the performances for local children and adults at St. Minver School. Most of the performers at the Church and at the Waterfront are members of MJ-UK, but it was particularly pleasing that the winner of this year’s principal award in Cornwall, Dan Annear, was ‘discovered’ at the workshops last year and played a full part in this year’s shows. .Moreover, the performances in the Church commendably included both adults and children from this year’s workshops, a decision that not only gave great pleasure, but illustrated how important is the work of The Foundation to the local community.

The entertainment began with a rousing performance by the whole company of ‘Another Openin’, Another Show’, followed by a polished and amusing tutorial, ‘Brush up your Shakespeare’, by Ryan Full and Scott Adams, and culminating with Ryan Full, supported by three lissome girls, exclaiming with great clarity, ‘It’s Too Darn Hot’. Maria introduced the next items by referring to a closer link being formed between her Company and Cornwall, and Helen James entranced the audience with her hugely impressive performance of ‘Glitter and be Gay’, from Candide... her coloratura was particularly exciting. By contrast Londa Ntolita sang ‘Ombra Mai Fu’, Handel’s famous ‘Largo’, with great dignity, presence and assurance. Maria’s nephew , Isaac, then persuaded a plant to grow with a drop of his blood from the ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, and Dan Annear and Alice Fisher sang with great clarity, ‘Suddenly Seymour’. Maria introduced two numbers from ‘The Secret Garden’, and the audience was treated to fine performances from two young men, familiar to St. Minver now, Matt Perry and Will Paul.

Matt was this year’s Cirencester winner, and they both demonstrated confident technique and accurate intonation.

Maria then spoke of teenage angst with reference to a book written in the 1930’s, ‘Spring Awakening’. Iona Burston, with the whole company, sang a most effectively plaintive, ‘Mama Who Bore Me’, and the admirably controlled and sombre, Matt Perry, sang ‘Left Behind’.

Dan Annear took on the tricky number, ‘Mrs Remmington’, and it was noticeable , and commendable, that he thanked the wonderful accompanist, Barrie Cooper, as he left the stage on both nights. Precise timing was essential and Barrie ensured it was there. Ryan Full then sang ‘Sway’, an item which depended on the stunningly evocative dancing of Emily Smith, and Ellie Burston brought the section to an end with a tender performance of ‘My House’ from ‘Matilda’.

The first Part concluded memorably, and with great panache with two items from ‘Billy Elliott’. Last year’s emerging star, Tom Robinson, delivered a suitably electrifying rendering of’ Electricity’, and the whole Company, together with adults and children from the workshops gave a passionate performance of ‘The Stars Look Down’. The contribution of two young Wadebridge School pupils, Ryan Dickson and Polly Every, showed great promise for the future.

After the Interval ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ provided a rousing introduction to the second half.

The complete company sang ‘Tradition’ with such passion and with imaginative use of the Church that the audience felt nothing but pure joy. Some of the younger girls from the workshops supported by three young ladies from MJ-UK entranced with ‘Matchmaker’, before Alice Fisher sang ‘Far From the Home I Love’ with much power and great clarity.

The following four items illustrated the diverse talents of the performers. Harry Apps sang ‘Something’s Coming’ from ‘West Side Story’ with absolute clarity and assurance, and the warmly introduced Alicia Fairhurst deserved her ovation for her conviction in ‘Maybe I like it this Way’. Last year’s Cornwall award winner, George Turner’s bassbaritone voice continues to impress as he sang ‘If Ever I would Leave You’, and the gifted Will Paul, supported by Emily Smith, effervescently danced and sang a ‘Tough Act to Follow’.

Puccini’s favourite Aria, ‘Oh Mio Babbino Caro’, adapted as ‘Anthem’ in ‘Chess’ by Tim Rice, gave Sian Voller another opportunity to display her considerable talent. More Opera followed with Nat Sheverington giving a commandingly assured performance of Verdi’s ‘Come del Ciel’. Readers might remember Michael Webborn who last year attended and helped the events in Cornwall, and had just finished his first major work, ‘The Clockmaker’s Daughter’, Warmly reviewed after a run in London, Harry Apps and Ellie Burston then sang with assured competence ‘Where you’ll Be’, a reminder of Michael Webborn’s glowing future. Scott Adams, together with George Turner, gave a breathtakingly energetic performance of ‘Gaston’,

and Nat Sheverington sang ‘If I can’t love her’ with strong assurance, both numbers from ‘Beauty and the Beast’.

The penultimate section began with a favourite Rogers and Hammerstein song, ‘It’s a Grand Night For Singing’, words which admirably epitomised the whole evening, and gloriously sung by everyone. Mary Poppins followed with the workshop juniors joyfully singing ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’, with solos by Polly Every, Ryan Dickson and Tom Robinson, characterised by superb timing and highly accomplished choreography. The combined groups rounded off this colourful section with a suitably cheerful performance of ‘Chim Chim Cher ee’.

It was no surprise that the Finale of Les Miserables should complete a wonderful evening.

The complete ensemble, with memorable contributions from Matt Perry, Anya Jagusz and Ellie Burston, demonstrated both the heroic passion of the piece and their own sheer enjoyment of participation. The standing ovations on both evenings were richly deserved. Julia, with John at her side, spoke briefly to thank

all who had taken part both on and off the stage, commending especially Barrie Cooper, the incomparable accompanist, and Maria Jagusz, whose energy and skills have inspired so many and created such a radiant pageant.

It is impossible to do justice to the entertainment which took place in The Waterfront the following evening. Once again Jamie Yoki provided the packed guests with generous hospitality and MJ-UK entranced everyone with a cornucopia of thirty two musical gems. It would be invidious to select only a few items as all were brilliant, but mention must be made of the fact that in oneeighth of the numbers the men were bare chested!, that Helen James hit a D Flat top note 8 notes higher than most sopranos can reach, and that Sam Buse made a welcome return on the ukulele with a George Formby favourite. It became clear during the short speeches at the end that even closer links are being forged between Cirencester and Cornwall, and that exciting plans for the future are in preparation .A fitting tribute indeed.

Ken the Postman does not really need an introduction to people who live in Rock.

Everyone who has the privilege of being on his round knows that he adds a little bit of happiness to the start of your day. He took up this ‘Temporary’ Job 28 years ago and is still trying to decide what to do!

He was good enough to pause and answer my questions.

What was your first car?

“A Gold Nissan Sunny that I wrote off on my first date with my wife Sharon.”

Is there anything you would have done differently in your life given a second chance?

“Not really, I have no regrets.”

Do you have a very strong childhood memory?

“Jennies Toyshop in Polmorla Rd Wadebridge. It had everything in it a child could wish for.”

What was the worst part time/full time job you ever had?

“Working the evening shift at

the old Tregonnings Petrol Station as it was really boring.”

What are you most proud of?

“Apart from my children Ryan and Tegan, it was being awarded the Player of the Year for St Teath Football Club in 2004.”

St Minver Short Mat Bowling Club Invites New Members If you come along to the St Minver school hall in Rock by 6.45pm on most Tuesday or Friday evenings you will be able to try your hand at bowling. The club will supply all equipment and tuition so that all you need to bring is yourself!

It is inexpensive, highly sociable sport applicable to all ages and all physical abilities. You can play just for fun or take it more seriously and, perhaps, eventually play for the county. But be warned - bowling is highly addictive!

I have long been fascinated by words and the way words use to describe things change with time. ‘Cool’ has long been used to mean agreeable or pleasant and ‘Gay’ now means something entirely different to what it did originally.

People no longer have belongings or things because it’s now all called ‘Stuff’. We no longer have problems or difficulties because we now have ‘Issues’.

And, finally, we are no longer able to watch or attend a demonstration as they have all become ‘Master Classes’.

Our new ‘Priest in Charge’ says “Hello”

My family and I moved in to the Vicarage at St Minver in July, and are really enjoying living here in this special part of Cornwall. Not only is the landscape beautiful, but we have found that the people we have met have been truly welcoming, and the churches both generous and caring.

My husband, Michael, and I both grew up in the countryside (in Oxfordshire and Sussex) but we have most recently been living in Nottingham with our three daughters, Avila (15), Maggie

Our Featured Artist Janet Shearer Janet Shearer has been painting all her life and has enjoyed an extraordinary career in the field of ‘trompe l’oeil’ painting and murals.

Trompe L’Oeil, pronounced ‘tromp loy’, means ‘trick the eye’ in French. It refers to the particular style of painting whereby the artist creates an illusion of space and paints an apparently three dimensional

image on the wall within the context of the surrounding architecture. Janet says: “Although trompe l’oeil is a visual joke, the joke is only effective if you do it really well. Achieving ever greater personal understanding of realism in painting is what motivates me to keep trying more complex and interesting creations.”

Recently, Janet has come to focus more on her own paintings, especially those of the coast between Rock and Epphaven. She will be hosting an exhibition of these paintings in The Rock Institute.

It’s never the same. I love it in all weathers: the crystal clear water. I love the rough weather and the storms. All of it!”

Janet works in oil and acrylics, sometimes a mixture of both, doing most of the work in her Withiel studio. She’s been painting murals for nearly 40 years and there are various reasons for her wanting to do less murals and more paintings. “I’ve had fantastic experiences creating murals and met some wonderful people but physically they can be very demanding. Also, when you’re commissioned to do a mural obviously you are decorating someone else’s living space and you’re involved with someone else’s life.” So she occasionally 32

turns down commissions these days, including recent requests from the royal family of Dubai and one of the richest men in the world in Delhi!

She’d rather be out on the coast of Cornwall, thank you very much.

A Fascination With Water “I want to spend more time doing my own work. My painting is very much about my love of Cornwall and my fascination with water. All my paintings are of water.

I’m always interested in the movement, the clarity, the colours, especially here in Cornwall. I can be lost for hours looking into a rock pool. Water holds an endless

fascination for me. Then there’s something about the representation of water that pleases me very much.”

The pleasure Janet finds in exploring our coast and making representations of what she sees is evident in the paintings she creates. “I hope you will be able to come in to the show and enjoy the same things as I do: Cornwall, the water - an appreciation of the place where we live.”

Local Wildlife (Excluding Homo Sapiens)

by Barbara Le Main We have many different species locally and with just a little quiet patience and observation you will be rewarded. I know a man (I’m not boasting) who works in many local gardens. He is an ardent ornithologist and very keen on observing wildlife.

The raptors he has seen in st minver lowlands include peregrine falcons, buzzards, sparrow hawks, kestrels, merlins, barn owls and tawny owls. Other unusual birds seen are the mistle thrush (they have bred behind rock chapel), goldcrest and firecrest have also been observed.

I had been told by people who work close to the pontoon at Rock that Otters have been seen dragging their catch onto the pontoon.

According to my informant the Camel estuary is a stronghold for the species.

Regarding hedgehogs, my friend has never seen one in this area and informs me they are an endangered species. Please always check your bonfires before lighting them, as our prickly friends love to hide there during winter.

Hints Please leave a small area of your garden ‘untidy’ and lets weed (unwanted plants) grow and flower and maybe pop a couple of logs there. This year I cleared my pile of logs and had to relocate six frogs and toads. Not a prince in sight!!

We are lucky living within walking distance of the seashore and beautiful countryside. I would encourage children and adults alike to enjoy our inheritance so the future of this beautiful county may be safe.

TeddyAid - Toys for Refugees Sarah Morgan Sarah lives and works in London as a freelance board level headhunter. She was born and grew up in South Devon. She spent all her childhood and most subsequent summers in Daymer Bay and New Polzeath, and always dreamt of buying a house of her own here. She now spends nearly all of the school holidays at her lovingly restored, traditional, Cornish cottage in Tredrizzick have soft toys to spare.

I asked children in Archie’s class and some of my local friends with children if they would like to donate a teddy.

The message spread and children in other classes asked if they could donate too.

I would come home to find cuddly creatures on my doorstep and our house looked like a large toy shop! After three weeks of incredibly hard work processing 2,000 donations I Sarah and her son Archie.

TeddyAid is now operating through a network of friends and friends of friends (mainly mothers) who are all volunteering their time and energy to the cause.

There was a lot of initial interest in Australia and Asia. Two weeks ago TeddyAid was launched in Australia, co-ordinated by an old work colleague. They are now collecting toys to distribute to the refugee children who have settled in Australia.

We are about to launch in France and the Netherlands and we have schools collecting across the country. By the first week of October we expect to have had 4,000 children donating nationally.

Back in Tredrizzick, Leonor Beer Robson and her mum, Kerensa, my neighbours, have started collecting at St Minver School with collections and will be doing so at Tintagel primary school very soon.

We know that teddy bears are not going to save lives. But what our children can do is send something of theirs that can be of massive emotional value to a child living in an unknown place with nothing to play with. I hope they will provide some comfort, sense of ownership and normality. The personal notes and drawings may well make the displaced children feel welcome when they arrive in new countries after a traumatic journey’

Country Diary from Cobb Cottage

Written and Illustrated by Joan Cockett A stillness in the air.

Woodsmoke. ‘The summer now is weeping’ I see I wrote this in my diary on Saturday August 29th. Autumn is a time that always evokes memories for me ‘Fair waved the golden corn, In Cannans’ pleasant land’, we all sang at the village school in Westgate-on-Sea, in September 1939. War had just been declared; we were on holiday and my father decided we should stay in Westgate (for safety!) whilst he returned to London. The Kent coast turned out not to be the safest place. We returned in December, but that autumn is a very vivid memory of Harvest Festival at the village school - a bittersweet memory, for all that came after. From London, we spent our wartime holidays at my cousin’s farm in Mayfield, Sussex, and the latter part of the school summer holiday evokes a memory of their orchard, the powerful scent of apples, and fallen pears, trampled on by the pigs. abundance: scooping them up from the dead leaves evokes that earthy smell.

So here, in the present, Cobb Cottage garden is once again overflowing with apples, the Charles Ross being the star turn with its branches touching the ground with the weight of the fruit.

A friend has just brought me some tomatoes, tiny sweet fruits. You cannot beat the flavour of home grown.

This year has been a wonderful one for gardens here, plenty of rain, and particularly early warm sunshine. Not so good for holiday makers as much of August was wet, but we are now enjoying a lovely September.

Squirrels are not frequent visitors, but one has appeared recently, taking small apples from the Codling tree (grown for cider). These apples are the right size for burying for a winter store. I love watching the squirrel’s antics, as he skitters across the studio roof, falling off, then catching a branch to save himself.

A Place Called Winter Patrick Gale Published by Tinder Press. Paperback £7.99 from Wadebridge Bookshop Regular readers of book Rrnot the first of Patrick Gale’s novels to have caught the attention of your reviewer. All have been warmly commended, and ‘A Place Called Winter’ is no exception. There are, however, significantly sharp contrasts between this book and its predecessors.

Its genesis was the discovery of some of the author’s grandmother’s letters in a chest of drawers, together with a small exercise book in which she had begun to draft her memoirs.

St Minver School The Headmaster’s Report We have already had an exciting start to the year, with children taking part in all sorts of trips and visits. Our children have settled well into their new classes and got to know their new teachers and our lovely new reception children have settled in well to their new class.

Two new teachers We had two new staff appointments this term too. Alicia Warren started as our Reception class teacher and Matt Bennetts has taken on the role of Sports Teacher. They have both settled in brilliantly and have quickly adjusted to the pace of life at St Minver.

Restormel Castle We have been putting our minibuses to good use already. Year 1 have visited the zoo and seen some amazing creatures and Year 2 had a great day out at Restormel Castle.

Cycling Event Our pupils also took part in the cycling event at Wadebridge School last week.

23 Schools turned up to take part and our school came second! Brilliant work by our two teams, who have now qualified for the Cornwall Games finals later in the year.

PTA

Finally ...

The PTA organised a brilliant Funday for the pupils. There were stalls and games for all, and I took a good soaking all in the name of fundraising. This coming Friday they are organising a quiz night at the Pityme. It would be great to see you there, if you can spare a few hours of your time to compete against some of the finest minds in the St Minver/ Rock postcode area!

Neighbourhood Development Plan

As previously reported, the St Minver Parishes’ Pre-Submission Plan Public Consultation resulted in Natural England determining that a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is required to support the submission of the NDP for final public Consultation and Independent Inspection. The St Minver Parishes NDP Steering Group contracted an experienced consultancy, LUC (Land Use Consultants Limited), to prepare the SEA and good progress has been achieved with the draft SEA being received at the beginning of October. Following a thorough review and detailed comments by the Steering Group, LUC produced the final version of the SEA in mid October ready for the mandatory Public Consultation.

Providing there are no significant comments from this consultation the NDP will then proceed to Independent Examination as the final stage prior to referendum early in 2016.

Progress on the Final Public Consultation and any other issues related to the NDP will be posted on the St Minver Parish Councils’ website and included in future Link articles.

The SEA, revised NDP and revised Carol Mould, Chairman St Consultation Statement have Minver Lowlands Parish Council been submitted to Cornwall and the St Minver Parishes Neighbourhood Development Council for the mandatory six Plan Steering Group week Final Public Consultation.

The SEA made recommendations to include additional statements in NDP Policies STMNDP 2.3, STMNDP 2.6, and STMNDP 2.7 to further reduce the potential impact of development on the local environment and Local Landscape Character. The Steering Group accepted these recommendations and the NDP has been updated accordingly.

The Consultation Statement has also been updated to include the details of the SEA process including the comments received from Natural England on the SEA Scoping Document.

Parliamentary Update from Scott Mann MP Shared Space Scheme Recently I welcomed Local Government Minister Marcus Jones MP to Bodmin to hold a roundtable discussion with town and Cornwall councillors about the proposed shared space scheme.

He was told how the scheme, which is designed to keep traffic moving at a constant slow speed, would benefit Bodmin by making roads pedestrian and cycle friendly.

After the discussion, the Minister walked through the town to see where exactly the shared space would be implemented.

Bodmin has huge potential to grow its economy through the tourist industry and by improving its infrastructure. By making the roads cycle friendly and embracing the vision put forward by Better Bodmin, the town will be able to further cater for the thousands of walkers and cyclists who come to Cornwall.
