Major Initiatives Proposed by Padstow Harbour Commission The Padstow Harbour Commission (PHC) have given the Link an insight into a number of major initiatives being proposed.

Speed Limit Reduction steps towards changing the Estuary. The Duchy of In a bid to make the Camel Estuary a much safer place for all to use, the Padstow Harbour Commission PHC has agreed a way forward to lower the speed limit that exists on the waters. Instead of going for a blanket reduction (it currently stands at 45 knots, 5 and 8 knots in mooring and environmental areas), the Commission is proposing that there be discrete zones in the Estuary with different speed limits.

This is to ensure that the Estuary remains a vibrant place for both leisure and commercial activities and preserves the economic well being of the area.

The process to change the speed limit will be a complex and lengthy one, taking years rather than months, as the Commission will have to go through a thorough consultation process and then take 16

harbour byelaws. Details of the consultation process will be issued in the Link and other media once they are finalised.

Rock Car Park Expansion Plans are also afoot to expand Rock’s Quarry Car Park, increasing the number of bays by over 70. This is to address the growing problem of congestion during the high season. The cost of this, to be funded entirely by the Commission, will be significant but is deemed necessary to facilitate the economic development of the communities both sides of the Estuary.

The expansion work, targeted for the Winter of 2015/2016, will see the area in front of the car park developed. Initial plans have been worked up and are said to minimize the visual impact of the development from the

Cornwall, owner of the land, has given approval to the Commission to explore planning permission on the basis of these plans. The process will go forward under the normal planning application procedures.

Winter Sunday Ferry Service The Padstow Harbour Commission has confirmed its commitment to running the ferry service between Rock and Padstow on Sundays throughout the Winter of 2015/2016.

This last Winter was the first the PHC had run the service and, whilst the cost of running the service has been more than the revenue received, the Commission sees it as essential to maintaining the Winter incomes of the businesses both Rock and Padstow sides. .

An MBE for Mike Hewitt!

Celebrations at Rock RNLI

We’ve been a very happy team at the lifeboat station following the announcement that one of our most loyal volunteers has been recognised with an MBE in the Queen’s 2015 New Year Honours list.

Mike Hewitt has been a volunteer with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for the last two decades and is credited with being instrumental in the founding of a lifeboat station at Rock after witnessing first-hand the many calls for help by users of the Camel Estuary.

As owner of the nearby Rock Water Ski School, Mike was often first to respond to calls for help and there are many stories of his bravery and selflessness in assisting members of the public before the lifeboat station was built. As the number of accidents in the Camel Estuary became more frequent, so the need to establish an RNLI lifeboat station became more important, and Mike led a small group from the community to persuade the RNLI to hold a trial, and then

to establish a permanent lifeboat station in 1988. It was worth the effort as Rock lifeboat crews have subsequently launched 435 times, assisting 270 people and saving 82 lives.

Since its opening, Mike has been the station’s Lifeboat Operations Manager or LOM, a voluntary post that carries great accountability as it assumes responsibility for launching a lifeboat and its crew on a rescue mission.

He has also been invaluable in providing pastoral care to the crew who often bear witness to tragic incidents.

But Mike doesn’t just volunteer for the RNLI, he’s also a Harbour Commissioner, a further commitment on his time, as well as being a substantial

fund raiser for a number of local and national charitable causes.

At the time of the announcement, Paul Boissier, the RNLI’s Chief Executive, said of Mike and his award; “The founding of a lifeboat station at Rock was singlehandedly driven by Mike, whose foresight, powers of persuasion and generosity has saved countless lives since. Mike is a largerthan-life character in a small community such as Rock. His wisdom and great humanity make him a natural leader, and he is completely selfless in all that he does, not just for the RNLI, but for the wider community too. I am delighted that he is being 17

recognised with an MBE.” That was one of many tributes that have poured in since the announcement and amongst those keen to congratulate Mike was Gus Guest, Rock RNLI Station Chairman; “I’m so pleased that Mike has been given this public acknowledgement for the voluntary work he has done for our community.

Yes he’s been instrumental in promoting water safety on the Camel estuary, but he’s done so much more.

His engineering ingenuity and skill at making things has helped out a diverse range of organisations and charities from playgroups to the Marie Curie Big Swim.

Few people I have met in my lifetime have given so much of their time for the public good. And perhaps the award should be shared with his wife Barbara who has supported him so well and put up with all the time he has spent helping others.

I hope, that as someone put on social media, the Queen realises how strong his hand shake is!”

So the celebrations go on and so too does the work of the lifeboat station where our new lifeboat Rusper II has been out and about on exercise and indeed on emergency call outs (see page 22).

A Very Special Christmas Eve in St Minver Once again there was great excitement at the Perceval Institute on Christmas Eve afternoon when a huge throng of people followed Mary and Joseph with their lovely donkey Coco down to the church for the Crib Service. Some marvellous little actors of all ages dramatised the story of the birth of Jesus and then there was a real show stopper - baby Jesus appeared! He was played impeccably by 7 week old Sebastian Richards.

Sebastian was so taken by his actress mother Mary that he couldn’t take his eyes off her - his real Mum, Joanna, could just sit back and enjoy the very special moment. Well done and thank you to everyone involved.

Springing into Song Easter at Endellion It has already been an exciting year for Fran Hickox, founder of the St Endellion Easter Festival.

She was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List, a well-deserved recognition for inspiring and uplifting so many people through the power of music. 2015 looks set to welcome a bumper Easter Festival as well.

Fran says ,“We are delighted to welcome the distinguished composer and conductor, James MacMillan, to his first Endellion Festival, when he will conduct Durufle’s Requiem, the Violin Concerto of Mendelssohn and two of his own works, and we welcome the return of Keith Slade and Eamonn Dougan to the rostrum to conduct works including Bach’s Magnificat, Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music and Schoenberg’s Verklarte Nacht (Transfigured Night) — a work I have long wished to programme!”

Enjoy a packed week of wonderful live music, running March 4th through to the 12th. Things will kick

off with a triumphal blast of fresh North Cornwall air, as the immensely popular ‘Come and Blow’ from the 2012 program returns for another round. Festival organizers have extended an open invitation to all wind and brass players to join with members of the Festival orchestra to Come and Blow their hearts out.

Thanks to the Easter and Summer Festivals, musicians come from near and far to celebrate through music. We agree that Spring in North Cornwall is a special season, “with larks constantly ascending, daffodils and primroses abounding, and brilliantly starry nights. Together with the church’s magic and many other qualities, this vibrant season brings an added dimension to the heartfelt music of the Festival.”

You don’t have to wait until Easter to enjoy music at St Endellion. They are now presenting exciting performance engagements throughout the year.

tunes? Friday 20 March the Church welcomes Dorset based jazz quartet Misbehavin’. Vocalist Helen Porter is accompanied by a lively clarinet and bass clarinet, rhythm guitar, and double bass. The result is a distinctive sound that draws you in with an intimate hush and then hits you with high octane soloing and exuberance.

If classical is more your rhythm, don’t miss Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Strings when they come to town on April 23rd. They will be performing masterworks by two great Romantic composers: Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings, and an arrangement for strings of Brahms’s String Quintet in G. The programme also includes Warlock’s Capriol Suite, for which the BSO musicians will be joined by young Cornish string players.

Wadebridge Festival of Music and Speech Celebrates 90th Anniversary The Wadebridge Festival of Music and Speech was inaugurated in 1925 and is entirely self funding. The Festival is held annually at the beginning of March and attracts young and old participants from throughout the County and sometimes beyond.

It is the second oldest

Festival in the County.

Over the years, some of our entrants have gone on to achieve great things becoming professionals in their various spheres: for example, Rebecca Moon is an excellent Operatic Soprano and Jamie Prophet is currently principal trumpet with the London

Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Festival is entirely run by volunteers who give up considerable time and effort throughout the year to prepare and run the festival which lasts for five or six days depending on the number of entries.

There are classes for speech, choirs, instrumental and vocal.

The 2015 festival will take place between March 2nd - 7th, 2015 with a festival finale concert on saturday 7th march at 7 pm. Admission is free, with donations very welcome.

In these austere times it is not easy to cover our Festival costs, not least Adjudicators’ fees and the cost of hiring the Wadebridge Town Hall for nearly a week. We rely on a combination of reasonable admission charges, entry fees and programme sales, advertising revenue from our syllabus and programme, and donations from loyal Patrons.

Since 1925 the Festival has grown considerably. In 1934 it was held on one day with just 11 Classes containing 46 entries. Last

Back on November 14th the crew were launched in the early evening to reports that a kite surfer was missing. The Padstow all-weather lifeboat was also launched and then a rescue helicopter was deployed.

The Polzeath Coastguard team had found some kite surfing equipment next to a car, which suggested someone was out on the water.

Rock’s Frostbite Sailing Series Over 30 sailors braved this winter’s Frostbite Series – eight dinghy races on the Camel Estuary from November to January - run jointly

by Camel Sailing and Powerboat Centre and Rock Sailing Club. Nearly 50 local members were involved in one way or another, making it an increasingly important part of our local sailors’ racing calendar.

Entrants ranged from Jowan Hewitt aged 8 in his small RS Tera dinghy, through a clutch of teen sailors, to those well into their 60’s and possibly beyond. As ever with handicap racing, the fastest boats on the water weren’t necessarily the winners, and those able to stay upright had the advantage over those who did not. Excepting those races which were cancelled because of very heavy weather, the series experienced largely light winds, with rescue crews enjoying more frostbite than the participants.

As well as the Club and the School, special thanks go to Peter Stacey, the series Race Officer, who travelled from Plymouth for each and every race, plus the myriad other helpers, too many to mention.

This week the Club held a most enjoyable Olive Oil tasting evening, given by Geoff Davis of the Italian Olive Oil Co. Members were introduced to and tasted different oils on small pieces of bread. The tasting was followed by an Italian themed supper.

Wadebridge Choral Society Prepares for Spring

Spring may seem some time away but Wadebridge Choral Society is busy preparing for its Spring Concert in April. Scheduled for Saturday the 25th at Wadebridge School, the main work will be Mozart’s much loved ‘Requiem’ and ‘Laudate Dominum’. The companion piece will be Haydn’s less familiar ‘Insanæ et Vanæ Curæ’, another tour de force for the Choir.

The Concert Orchestra will be accompanying the Choir and will open the evening with Gustav Holst’s ‘Brook Green Suite’ for strings, written in 1933 for St Paul’s Girls’ School junior orchestra while the composer was in hospital the year before he died. Sounds grim? Far from it: the piece is full of life, as indeed is the Requiem.

Rehearsals are at 7.15pm every Tuesday evening at the Goods Shed.

Free Health Checks

Free NHS Health Checks are being offered from the two Pharmacies (Boots and Day Lewis) in Wadebridge also in Camelford. If you are between 40-74 you will be able to attend and have your risk of developing cardiovascular disease assessed.

This will involve some simple measurements being taken such as your height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol. There will also be a lifestyle assessment. Further information can be found on the NHS Health Check programme can be found at http://www.healthcheck. nhs.uk/ .

All results will be shared with your GP and where further follow-up will be undertaken if necessary. Support for lifestyle change such as stop smoking and weight management is also available through the NHS Health Promotion team.

World Cancer Day World Cancer Day fell on a very chilly but bright Wednesday in February. The St Minver Cancer Research UK fund raising committee were only too pleased to participate and gallantly stood outside Newslines and The Rock Bakery with smiles on their faces and collection buckets. Everyone was very generous and £294 was collected in just five hours.

We would like to thank Newslines and The Rock Bakery for their offers of hot drinks and everyone who supported and contributed to what was a very worthwhile sum of money which will be forwarded to Cancer Research UK to help fund current research into this awful disease. Business Spotlight

Amy Sapwell

‘inTune Choir’ Local business woman and choir mistress Amy Sapwell started her own business in 2013 following a big life change. “We moved back to Cornwall after 10 years in Australia. We really had to begin again, and after nine years of being a music teacher it seemed like a great opportunity to explore something new”.

In recent years, singing and directing had become her major passion. So she tapped into this and came up with the idea of ‘inTune Choir’.

“I needed a format that could actually earn me money – one choir wasn”t going to be enough!”. So Amy found four locations across Cornwall and is directing choirs four nights a week. “To be honest, I thought this was going to be a part-time job. I was wrong about that! I work incredibly hard but the great thing is that I choose my hours (within reason!) and can fit it in around family life. I also didn’t anticipate the other opportunities that would present themselves.

For example, I am now also running a workplace choir at a solicitors firm, have led workshops and do some private vocal teaching”.

Amy says that starting up your own business is

hard work but extremely rewarding. “It is essential you love what you do as when you are self-employed you have to give it everything you’ve got – that would be difficult if your heart wasn”t in it. A website is essential, as is a Facebook Page. Beyond that, you rely on word of mouth so it is vital to offer the service you are promising”.

The work for Amy goes far beyond the weekly rehearsals. There is a lot of “behind the scenes” work and then of course are the gigs.

“On average we do one gig a month, although December is an exception – we did seven gigs in the lead up to Christmas!”

The choirs often combine for these gigs, frequently resulting in a choir of 60 people or more.

The experience, Amy says, is incredibly uplifting – for herself and her choirs.

“It gives you such a buzz!

Everyone knows the benefits of singing – and singing in a group. I am so lucky as I get to do this five times a week!

It lifts and energises you and we have such a laugh that it is just as enjoyable for me as it is for them”.

A Report from Pupils at St Minver School In year 3 we have had a Roman Day, learning all about the Romans, and I can tell you, some of those things were pretty gross! We all dressed up as Romans and we had a great time!

One of the gross things was that they had to wipe their bottoms with sponges on sticks! We also had a Roman banquet where we ate things like dates, fruits and pizzas.

We have been playing Mathletics and trialling Spellodrome and it is so much fun! In art, we have been looking at the work of Paul Klee. He was fascinated by lines and how they can go anywhere you want them to.

We’ve also been learning poetry and writing on our own in literacy. In French, we’ve been learning about bon anniversaire (birthdays) and un caudeu (presents) and body parts. We all enjoy life in Year 4!

For example, we have written some Aboriginal-style myths and we have also illustrated the borders with patterns made out of dots. Kytto and I even brought in our didgeridoos and Kytto (who is brilliant at playing it whereas I am rubbish) helped us learn to play it! (It is impossible!)

by Izzy, year 5 YEAR 6 Since the last time you heard from us, we have done a science topic where we were trying to separate a mixture of: mud, water, leaves, twigs and string (ugh!) by sieving and filtering. Then we attempted to separate solutions by evaporation. We evaporated the solutions by leaving it on the radiator overnight.

There were many different solutions such as: instant coffee with water, salt with water, sugar with water, brown sugar with water and, surprisingly, tap water, with dissolved minerals in it.

Additionally, we did a geography topic (which we are still doing) about global warming. I must say, the climate changes were rather alarming and it is all because of humans’ actions!

Spyrys Spas & Hot Tubs About three years ago local couple, Brian and Sharon Kennelly, decided to leave their jobs and go into business together.

They formed Spyrys Spas & Hot Tubs and set up their showroom at Dunveth Business Park near Tesco in Wadebridge.

One of the main reasons for the move was that Brian’s work in the water and energy industries took him away from the family and Cornwall far too frequently and his experience in construction and plant was ideal for the new venture.

Having grown up in St Minver, Sharon trained at St Austell College to become a medical secretary, gaining employment at a General Practice in Falmouth and then moving onto working as Secretary to a Professor in the Rheumatology Unit, City and Treliske Hospitals.

Many of the patients she came into contact with had benefited from the use of the hydrotherapy pool which gave them relief from their painful muscles and joints whilst gently moving and exercising.

Then I put some windmills in it. Then I had someone in Victorian clothes walking among the windmills so you had this juxtaposition of the old and new. You couldn’t place it in any particular era. Wendy found this very interesting.”

He had fallen asleep and there was this huge wave about to crash over him. Again, Wendy was taken with the unusual approach in my work and we made a connection that continues to this day.”

“All my work is darkly humorous. My vision is to be original and imaginative

– to do things that nobody else does. So I pretty much plough my own furrow.

I like narrative paintings that tell a story. I also like paintings that require a bit of looking at. I like a painting that has a lot going on in it that makes some sort of comment about the way we live. In my latest series, I think of something like The Waiting Room and there’s a lot of scope for making comments on the ironies of existence in that concept.”

Wendy is more of a traditional landscape artist but under William’s influence, she began to inject more absurd elements into her work.

The National Lobster Hatchery Serious Science can be cute!

More than a tourist attraction Whether you’re passionate about sustainability, support the livelihood of Cornish fishermen, or just love the luxurious taste of lobster, you’re likely to agree that The National Lobster Hatchery is doing an important job.

Its mission goes far beyond showing cute baby lobsters to tourists (although they admit that is lots of fun). The hatchery is a unique marine conservation charity focused on preserving our native lobster population. It’s serious work, and it impacts a lot more than our local catch.

It’s just across the water, but the National Lobster Hatchery’s pioneering research is known worldwide. Its dedicated staff tackles the global problem of over-fishing in three ways: education, research and a hands-on program designed to boost our local lobster population.

The hatchery headquarters was purpose

The National Lobster Hatchery was established in 2000. Dr Carly Daniels, Research and Development Officer, has roots in Rock. built and located on the quay in Padstow in 2000, and The National Lobster Hatchery was registered as a charity in 2004. Today the facility hosts a thriving scientific research program and a lively visitor centre. The National Lobster Hatchery also educates at every level, from pre school groups to postgraduate students.

Every little lobster counts The people at the Lobster Hatchery are a jolly bunch, whether greeting visitors or doing painstaking genetic research. Maybe that’s because their efforts are truly making a difference to the future of our marine ecosystem. Approximately 54,000 juvenile lobsters were released in 2014, up from 32,000 in 2011. Since 2000 they have released over 171,000 juvenile lobsters!

Rock Rowing Club’s New Year Gig Push

Rock Rowing Club members, families and friends met on Polzeath Beach for the New Year’s Day Annual Charity Gig push from Polzeath beach to Rock beach.

The rowing muscles soon warmed up pushing the 33ft wooden Cornish Pilot Gig ‘Shearwater’ and her trailer up Polzeath hill collecting from generous motorists and patrons of the carefully planned rest/refreshment stops at the Oystercatcher Bar, Pityme Inn, Rock Social Club, Mariners and Rock Inn along the 3 mile route.

This year’s chosen charity was Oxfam’s Ebola Crisis Appeal and a fantastic sum of £680 was raised with all monies going to the charity.

Emily Scott

Award-winning chef Emily Scott has recently taken over the helm at The St Tudy Inn, Pub and Restaurant.

Emily believes in using seasonal ingredients and the best Cornish produce available. Here she shares her recipe for a delicious flourless chocolate cake, named Gateau St Vincent after the French chef she learnt it from.

“Vincent gave me this recipe when I worked and lived in Burgundy, France. It was a wonderful restaurant where I learnt so much of my cooking.’”

Gateaux St Vincent (Gluten Free - Serves 8 - 10 )

23cm (9 inch) round cake tin of 160g (5½ oz) good quality dark chocolate, broken up of pinch of sea salt of 160g (5½ oz) cold unsalted butter, cut Preheat the oven to 180°C / Gas mark 4. Butter the tin and line bottom with greaseproof paper.

Combine the chocolate and salt and set over a pan of simmering water. When the chocolate has melted, turn off the heat and drop the butter into the bowl, do not stir.

Let the mixture sit for a few minutes until the butter begins to melt, stir and leave for a few minutes. Stirring too much will cool the chocolate too quickly.

In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites to soft peaks. Add the sugar and beat until stiff peaks form.

Now stir the chocolate mixture until the butter is melted. Use a whisk to stir in the egg yolks, one at a time. Gently fold in the egg whites.

Fold in the ground almonds, being careful not to over fold knocking out the air in the egg

into pieces of 4 eggs, separated of 120g (4½ oz) caster sugar of 160g (5½ oz) ground almonds whites.

Pour the mixture into a prepared tin and bake for 25 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean from the centre of the cake. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before turning it out. Delicious served with cream or creme anglaise.

The Headmaster’s School Report

All of our classes have been busy, working hard and having fun.

Year 2 have been reading the story of Katie Morag and this week will be making their stop and go signs, which they are very excited about.

Year 3 have been had a number of exciting days already this term. They had a Roman Day where they learnt how Romans ate, relaxed and fought. They had a visit from the dentist and they went on a walk down to Porthilly

where they visited St Michael’s church. Here they looked at all of its unique features.

In Year 5 they had an amazing Aboriginal day. They studied all things Australian and Plum Mead came in to help them create some fantastic aboriginal artwork.

Year 6 have been studying sustainability, looking at the litter in our area and the recycling possibilities, as well as working hard in preparation for their tests later this year!!

Year 4 have done some beautiful descriptive writing on story settings as well as finding out more about electricity.

Year 5 and 6 also had a visit from Peter Frost of the NSPCC looking at some very sensitive issues around abuse and neglect. Our children were extremely mature in their response and Mr Frost was extremely impressed with them.

We have already had one event this term, the Key Stage 1 multi skills festival. This involved our infant children going along to Wadebridge and taking part in a very wide variety of events. They had a great time and did very well, taking first place in a number of them.

At the beginning of February, we “ramped up the red” in aid of the British Heart Foundation thanks to the organisational skills of Archie Carnegie and our school council. Our reception Class 1 headed off down to Eden where they had loads of fun finding out about chocolate!

Loving Humanity Amy Peake Witihiel Mum of three, Pilates Teacher and all-round ‘super-woman’ Amy Peake, tells us about her charitable work for Syrian Women Refugees.

A few months ago I was sitting in a doctor’s surgery and saw a truly appalling picture of a Syrian refugee camp. There were 25,000 people queuing for food in a bombed out street; total destruction. I couldn’t believe my eyes and I couldn’t believe I didn’t know more about the shocking humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Middle East. I instantly thought, being a woman, how on earth do these women cope once a month. What happens when you are a refugee and you need sanitary towels?

So I started researching whether or not aid agencies supplied them. Meanwhile Tom, my husband, told me about an amazing Indian gentleman called Mr Muruga who has invented a really cheap sanitary towel making machine, in the process hugely benefitting Indian society. Just before I left for Jordan I was told I would be given the opportunity to shop for winter clothes for the refugees in downtown Amman. I left with £3,000 given to me by

friends and family. With Catherine’s team, I bought 700 winter coats, 85 blankets and loads of underwear for the women who I met.

I also bought three kerosene heaters for a school which previously had no heating.

Having returned from Jordan with the knowledge the project now had the potential to work, I flew to India on November 27th to meet Mr Muruga to discuss and understand better the machine and the logistics of shipping it to Jordan.

Mr Muruga is a fantastic human being bent on improving the lives of women. He taught me how to use the machines, how to mend them and he allowed me to film everything so that when the machines arrive in Jordan I can go back to the refugee camp and teach the women, who needless to say are incredibly excited.

The machine is genius, just £235 buys one month’s worth of raw product which will produce approximately 30,000 sanitary pads,

3,000 packets. And it costs just over £1,000 to buy.

So far I have raised £7,094.72 and need another £2,498.60 to buy two machines and six months’ worth of raw product.

Earlier this month a friend very generously gave me £3,800 to buy the portacabin that will house the machines in the refugee camp.

MercyCorps are just waiting for the correct paperwork to come through from the Royal family’s shipping company in

Jordan before I can place the order with Mr Muruga in India.

A lot has happened and at every turn there is a new challenge but slowly and steadily I’m getting closer to my goal. While I was in Jordan I also had a meeting with a wonderful woman called Nofa who runs a women’s centre in Azraq in the desert.

She told me that there is a population of 23,000 people and only one midwife who charges a fortune for her care.

Another project is to set up a midwifery service in Azraq at the women’s centre and install a sanitary towel making machine there too.

The photo is looking up to Dinham Creek and on, taken by Frank this time. Well we have a large flock of Lapwing back again as many as 200 plus. A few pairs of Shelducks, Widgeon, around 20 - getting less each year. There was a young Red Fox curled up in the sun, looking like a Davey Crockett Hat - he was watching us with one eye open.

Cormorants are on the increase so are Oyster Catchers. Still clearing coves of rubbish that floats in. Tins, bottles, nets etc its our way of saying “Thank You Camel”. See you next time. Pete and Frank.

A year in the life of St Minver Brownies Katrina Bacon 2014 marked 100 years of Brownies and as a Brownie leader who has been with St Minver Brownies for over 15 years I was very excited about all the plans for 2014.

The year was dedicated to working towards our Cornwall Challenge Badge and the 100th Birthday Challenge Badge. As the title of each badge

suggests there were a variety of different challenges that needed to be completed before we could all receive the badges. The girls agreed on what challenges they would like to undertake and we proceeded through the year to carry these challenges out.

January saw us doing lots of painting as one of the challenges was to learn how to put on a sari. As a group we decided not only to learn how to put on a sari we would make our own!

A local laundry company (Ocean Breeze, Wadebridge) very kindly donated some old white sheets, which we cut up and painted for our saris.

We then decided that we would wear our saris and have a Indian night for Thinking Day.

Indian night was a great success: the girls got to wear their own sari’s and we had some Chicken Korma with Naan Bread for a snack.

Art and Craft Show Once again we entered the Art and Craft Show in Wadebridge. The theme was Outer Space. We made a group outer space junk model, grew some astronaut food and made some space craft vehicles.

A Parliamentary Debate!

Once we returned from our Easter Break, we needed to crack on with the challenges. Our next one was to learn about Margaret Thatcher and agree on three new Parliamentary rules that we think should be implemented. Well what an evening we had.

St Minver War Memorial 1914 - 1918 Ian Hughes His name appears on the Tyne Cot Memorial (Somme) as his body was never found. Sidney took part in the Third Battle of Ypres in July 1917 where his Battalion worked as Pioneers building mule tracks up to the front line. As he died on August 16th, 1917, he would have been involved in the Battle of Langemarck, which took place between August 16th and 18th, 1917.

by Philip Marsden Published by Granta; Hardback £20 from Wadebridge Bookshop Readers of Philip Marsden’s first Cornish book, ‘The Levelling Sea’, a story of a Cornish Haven in the Age of Steam, will recall the author’s ability to combine scholarly research with a deep personal affection for the sea. ‘The Rising Ground’ is equally thoroughly researched and personal, and is written in a felicitously elegant style that has evoked widespread praise among the critics and will arouse sheer delight among the readers of this superb book.

Intriguingly it would be tempting to regard the book as a Cornish travelogue.

The dust-jacket emphasises familiar places in Cornwall, a sketch-map at the beginning of the book identifies those areas, Bodmin Moor, Clay Country, Upper Fal, Penwith and The Isles of Scilly, and at least one reviewer uses the phrase, “a journey through Cornwall”. The journey, however, commences in the Mendip Hills, in Somerset, close to the village where the author grew up, It is not surprising that a spirit of place should first be discovered in childhood, that “a simple slope should conjure up so much of a life”, close to Aveline’s Hole, a unique cave in which human bones have been dated from 8460 to 8410 BC. Nor is it surprising that the next Chapter should focus on Marsden’s current home, Ardevora, close to a creek at Ruan High Lanes, for it is here that 50

the author’s ‘Topophilia’( love of place) seems to have been stirred. W H Auden coined the term in 1948 to describe John Betjeman’s particular delight in places, and now Marsden has an impulse to walk westward through Cornwall to hunt for a “mythology of place”.

in the company of local historians and archaeologists, Marsden moves to Tintagel to examine the Arthurian story, assisted by reference to Geoffrey of Monmouth’s 1136 publication, ‘Historia Regum Britanniae’ It is understandable that there follows a diversion to Glastonbury, prompted principally by the association with King Arthur, but also by the change of residence of his parents.

Thereafter the journey remains in Cornwall including the Isles of Scilly, but this is much more than a mere description of what can be observed on a walk. Each page is sheer delight, rich in historical reference and vivid in the painting of landscapes(and stonescapes), delivered in an intimate, engaging style that irresistibly demands the reader’s attention. From Clay Pits to Bryher in the Isles of Scilly, Marsden, often making good use of his one- man tent, opens unexpected doors, reveals priceless gems, and leaves the reader enchanted by the cornucopia of material he has unearthed.

There is no single theme to emerge from this outstanding book. The Spirit of Place is clearly fundamental to all that has been described, and the author has been assiduous in exploring the capacity of places to create mythology around them.

To assist him he has drawn upon the work of a veritable encylopaedia of Cornish antiquarians, all of them ‘Topophilians’.

John Whitaker, John Leland, William Borlase, Charles Henderson, A L Rowse, W G Hoskins, Jack Clemo, Peter Lanyon, Charles Causley are just a few of the more familiar names, and it is exciting to meet less well-known characters like William Cookworthy, the founder of the China Clay industry, and Robert Bennett, 17th century merchant of Tregony whose will listed 60 varieties of cloth. One might conclude that these are some of Marsden’s heroes and that he, himself, will become a latter-day antiquarian, such is the extraordinary richness of this book.

After the exploration of places, the book concludes with a delightfully personal Epilogue, in which the seven notes of the whimbrel prompts reflection of the characteristics of rising ground before the sound of an outboard motor breaks the pensive silence. There is more to follow, however, as the author helpfully provides 21 pages of detailed notes about each chapter, followed by a, not unexpected, lengthy bibliography. This is a book that should be read by all lovers of Cornwall; lovers of its history, its scholars, its landscapes and of the spirit of its places.

He was involved in the Battle of Guillemont which raged between August 22nd and September 3rd, 1916. Again the archives at the museum give graphic details of this battle, where Private Male’s battalion were involved under heavy enemy artillery bombardment.

The final paragraph reads “Thus at long last the vital ground on which Guillemont had once stood (as the village was totally destroyed) was in British hands after one of

the bloodiest and most chaotic battles of the war”.

Country Diary from Cobb Cottage

Written and Illustrated by Joan Cockett Mid January - I pick a few daffodils from the garden.

What is it about these first few blooms that is so magical? Golden yellow, sunlight, warmth. . . and an elusive scent, hardly there. I have just made this drawing, and the vase itself is in front of me as I write; a lift of the spirits, an illusion that spring is here. The pot, with its decoration of irises, is from the Eglos Pottery; Penny often uses irises and tulips in her designs. Another splash of colour comes from two squashes (or gourdes), lovely shapes with their bold, golden yellow and green striped skin. These are rock-hard, and inedible, but very interesting to draw or paint - 60p from the farm shop!

As you will know if you are a regular reader of Link, I have included items from time to time relating to the history of Cobb Cottage.

I have kept a diary (now in Vol.IV!) over the last 37 years and always enjoy adding to it. Shortly after Christmas, we were watching A N Wilson’s ‘Betjemanland’ and there were many glimpses of this part of Cornwall, which so belongs to Betjeman. After seeing St Enodoc Church and Daymer Bay, John Betjeman’s voice is recorded saying “There was an old cottage, that we liked to think was haunted ...” and much to our surprise, the film showed Cobb Cottage as it was with the door in the middle and a small girl running into the overgrown garden.

We were amused to see the clothes line in the same place in St Enodoc’s garden as it was until about two years ago when a holiday tenant moved it to a sunnier position! Research

followed. We found the film was made in 1959 (black and white) so the child was probably one of the Oakley family who owned both properties at the time. We were able to download two stills from the film and I have made a drawing here from them (I couldn’t resist adding some washing on the clothes line!)

Was the cottage habitable?

A line to the left of the central door indicates a cable, so it had power and was not all that primitive. We knew previously that Jon Godden, who was the owner’s wife at the time, wrote several of her books in the cottage as it was a peaceful retreat from the main house.

Jon Godden was sister to the more famous Rumer Godden, who had a house at St Breward. Jon was probably the better writer, but did not seek fame.

by the Sea” inspired by Cornwall - haunting and a murder, apparently! I have ordered it and can’t wait to read it. When we first bought the cottage, John Betjeman told us there was a smuggler buried head down in the (disused) chimney, this is just one such story that we’ve heard! Various people have said that they would never spend another night here and that the cottage was haunted. All I can say is I have never felt anything but a benign

atmosphere, a happy place; although I have to admit sometimes I used to think I had caught a glimpse of a wraithlike figure of a girl, almost beyond my vision disappearing through the doorway from the old cottage (now my living room). However, there was not a door there in the original cottage imagination can be fertile . . . My husband, Len, used to say he was not truly happy until the roof was replaced in 1983, but that might have been partly because

it was no longer necessary to place buckets in strategic places to catch the rain as it came in! Before we bought the cottage, our son lived here in 1971-74, and there were tappings on the wall late at night, but I guess there are still those around who know a thing or two about that! I was looking at the ink stains on the floor boards upstairs - did Jon Godden spill her ink bottle?

One thing is for sure Cobb Cottage is much loved and, if there is a ghost, she’s a happy one.

Simple Home Cooking Nick Pickles

I run a dining not-for-profit dining business which indulges my total passion for cooking. I believe the ability to cook simple food is a very important life skill, particularly when so many people need support in and from the Community.

My recipes are designed for speed, simplicity, value for money and, above all, taste.

No 1 Fritata This is a lovely quick lunch or dinner dish that can be made using up either old bits and pieces from the fridge or fresh ingredients. It’s your choice!

It’s important to use a medium-sized non-stick frying pan that can actually go in the oven under the grill - take care to wrap the handle of the frying pan in foil to avoid it being over heated.

If you don’t have a grill you can flip the frittata over to cook the underside.

Basic Recipe for 4 people 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped.

1 carrot, washed (no need to peel) finely chopped.

1 large potato, washed (no need to peel) finely Chopped or cooked potatoes cut into slightly larger chunks.

Large dash of cooking oil and, if liked, good knob of butter.

Handful of spinach or other green leaves.

Salt and pepper to taste 4-6 eggs, beaten.

Handful of grated cheddar and/or Parmesan cheese.

Small handful of mushrooms or finely-sliced red peppers (optional).

Fry off the onion, carrot and potato (and any other raw vegetables) in a small amount of hotish oil and butter in the frying pan until slightly coloured. This may take 6 or 7 minutes. Stir from time to time to stop the vegetables sticking.

Add the potato (or any other cooked vegetables) and the green leaves to wilt. Mix 54

everything well. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Add the beaten eggs and half the cheese to the pan. Stir round well and leave on a lowish heat for a few minutes to set the egg mix at the bottom of the pan.

After a few minutes, once the egg base of the Frittata is set, sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top and place immediately under a hot grill to set the top. This may take only 3 or 4 minutes. Do not overcook the egg; you’re looking for some slight runniness.

Remove from the grill, carefully using gloves, and allow to cool.

Turn over the Frittata onto a chopping board, or leave in the pan, and serve in large wedges.

This goes excellently with lettuce or green leaves mixed with a little dressing and some nice bread.

Other alternative ingredients you could consider here are chopped asparagus and any other appropriate seasonal vegetables.

For Meat Eaters A few chopped-up sausages and/or Chorizo, cooked or raw, can also be added at the start of the cooking here or a handful of chopped ham added with the egg mix.

Basically, this dish can be used to clear-up any cooked left-overs you have in the fridge.

Gardening made easy

Nick Bacon, Trelawney Garden Centre The term compost is used to describe two different materials. Garden compost is made by rotting down vegetable matter and is used to improve your soil. Seed and potting composts are special formulations often based on peat coir or loam.

Neighbourhood Development Plan

The final stages to Referendum The St Minver Parishes Pre-Submission Plan Public Consultation was completed in January. The Plan was widely distributed to local residents and to over sixty organisations listed by Cornwall Council for comment. The Plan was available online, a thousand printed copies were distributed through local shops and amenities and some two thousand e-mails were sent out advising local residents, homeowners and organisations of the consultation and how to comment on the Plan Over 60 sets of comments were received. Detail responses were sent to those who submitted the comments wherever a valid communications address was provided. Most of the comments received related to areas where improvements could be made to improve the strength or clarity of the NDP. These have been

carefully reviewed by the NDP Team and appropriate improvements made to the Plan. The revised Plan has been approved by the Parish Councils and submitted to Cornwall Council.

PC Malcolm Taylor has just retired. We thank him for all his hard work and know that he will be missed by many in the community. He will not be replaced when he retires at the end of the month.

PCSO Claire Drennan continues working in the area and a Response Unit will be kept at Wadebridge.

For the month of November 2014 there were no crimes to report (4 x crimes November 2013) but there had been a spate of burglaries at nearby Rock.

There were two crimes in December 2014: one burglary/theft and one drink/ drive. For 2013 during the same periodtwo crimes recorded: one drink drive and one criminal damage.

Highways Issues Yet to be confirmed is a temporary road closure at Dunder Hill, Polzeath from March 2nd to March 6th from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm.

The work is for resurfacing works, to finish off the bottom section (near the shops). Cormac is booking in for 4 days but will probably complete in 2 days. This should sort the roadway out before the visitor numbers increase.

The closure timings look sufficient to cover school/ work/delivery traffic without causing too much inconvenience.

New chevron warning signs have been placed at the bottom of Gutt Hill. The Parish Council has asked for more appropriate signage to slow down the traffic and highlight that this is a blackspot with dangerous bends; Cormac is looking into this.

Effective use of signs is paramount as too much signage can be distracting to drivers.

Following a request by Highlands, a warning chevron has also been placed on the sharp bend between Windmill Lane and the Porteath Bee Centre.

Highways have become more responsive of late which is good news; I certainly cannot fault them. Highways maintenance teams are now instructed to cut out sections of the road surface which leads to a greatly improved outcome. The days of repeated coldfills appear to be numbered.

We are constantly monitoring the roadways and advise the Highways Department as soon as a problem arises.

Public Conveniences Cornwall Council was looking to reduce the winter opening of the public conveniences in the area to balance budget restraints.

A Public Conveniences Working Group, consisting of representatives of the two St Minver parish councils and other interested parties, was set up. An interim proposal, for the 2014/15 winter period up to Easter 2015, was put forward. Following discussions with Cornwall Council it was felt that the most effective way forward was to keep the Polzeath toilets open all week (7 days), those at New Polzeath to remain open at weekends

Superfast Broadband All residents and businesses in North Cornwall deserve access to decent broadband.

Whilst 95% of Cornwall will have access to superfast fibre broadband under the current ‘Superfast Cornwall’ scheme, many premises in our area still have very poor speeds.

In February, in my role as Government Minister for Rural Affairs, I announced a new multi-million pound government investment to help Cornwall’s local economy – this includes a new superfast broadband scheme which will bring fibre-based broadband to the 5% of premises that still can’t access superfast broadband. Delivering this funding and the new upgrade scheme will mean that 99% of premises will be able to access superfast fibre broadband.

If you can’t access superfast broadband and want to be considered for this new scheme please contact me, as I will be pushing for premises across North Cornwall who are still without access to superfast broadband benefit from this new upgrade programme.

The cost of petrol and heating oil As the price of crude oil has been dropping thankfully we have seen prices at the petrol pumps falling too. I am continuing my campaign to extend the rural fuel duty discount scheme to North Cornwall. The scheme sees the tax paid on petrol and diesel reduced by 5 pence-per-litre in some rural areas like the Isles of Scilly and parts of the Scottish highlands. I want to see this discount applied in North Cornwall too where using a car is a necessity not a luxury, where there are poor or no public transport alternatives, and where we have further to drive than island communities.

Bringing the rural fuel duty rebate scheme to our area would help to keep fuel prices lower in the long term.

As the price of oil has fallen dramatically in recent weeks, the cost of filling heating oil tanks in back gardens must fall too. I want to make sure that heating oil companies pass on the falling price of oil and I am also looking at what more the Government can do to help people connect many more

properties in North Cornwall to the mains gas supply.

Flooding In Parliament we have been continuing to debate last winter’s floods, what lessons we can learn to protect homes and businesses from floods in the future, and to make sure that the emergency services and other services are ready if disaster strikes.

This winter things have been different as we haven’t had the exceptional volumes of rainfall that we saw last winter, although of course we need to be prepared for any flooding over the next few months.

As the government environment minister responsible for flooding, I have also been working to make sure that our area benefits from £2.3 billion investment in flood defences across the country. There are projects in the pipeline over the next few years to repair Padstow Harbour’s tidal gate, and to improvement and repair flood defences in Wadebridge.

Zip Swing Saturday Saturday April 11; Adrenaline Quarry, Liskeard; Proceeds for Merlin Centre; The Zip Wire sees participants, strapped in a harness and clipped to a 490 metre long wire, whizz in parallel at 40 mph, suspended 50 metres (approx.

150 feet) above the quarry lake.

For The Giant Swing three people are harnessed into a giant swing which plunges them from an 80 degree angle, 50 metres (approx.

150 feet) above the lake, back and forth. Registration is £12 for the Zip Wire; £15 for the Big Swing; or £22 for both which covers the cost of taking part in the event. Participants are asked to try to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship.

•We will ensure that the area around your stove is covered to keep your room dust free.

•We will vacuum sweep your chimney/liner.

•We will conduct a smoke test to ensure that your chimney is operating safely with sufficient draw.

•We will provide a Certificate verifying that the chimney has been swept.

•We will fit your stove or one supplied by us.

•It will be installed in accordance with ‘J’ regulations in planning control by a HETAS registered engineer

•Upon completion your stove is signed off with HETAS and your local planning department is notified who then send you a completion certificate.
