Study With Us

Message from the Dean St Mellitus College is a place of hope, energy, and commitment to the gospel. We have pioneered creative approaches to training that enable Christians to explore their faith deeply whilst remaining rooted in the Church. My days as a student at St Mellitus College challenged and strengthened my faith, with the space to broaden my intellectual horizons. I was able to read widely, to interact with a stimulating and diverse group of staff and students, and to ground my learning in the context of mission and community. We welcome an increasingly diverse group of students who desire to listen to the Spirit and deepen their understanding of God, His word and His world. We focus on leadership development, spiritual formation and the shaping of Christian character.

Those who study at St Mellitus College may serve in a range of contexts; from different backgrounds, cultures and traditions, but all are committed to love and serve Christ. This is a place of prayer and worship where you will develop friendships and networks which will sustain and resource you. Our model of training combines theology with practice, enabling students to apply their learning directly to their workplaces, churches and communities. We will equip you to grow in your relationship with God, deepen your understanding of faith, and develop your ability to communicate that faith to others. We train people who are passionate about the gospel, called to serve Jesus Christ, and are energised by the life of the Spirit and the unity of the church. I hope that you might consider joining us on the journey,

Russell

God’s Church and God’s world need theologians on fire with the knowledge and love of God

Dr Jane Williams McDonald Professor in Christian Theology

Why Study Theology? All Christians are theologians – we speak to God and expect God to speak to us. But if we are to share our faith in Jesus with those who do not yet know him, we need to be confident in our belief and deeply-rooted in our life of prayer and our understanding of the Bible. We study theology in order to equip ourselves to live our lives with God and share our faith. Studying theology is a bold enterprise – after all, we are exploring the nature of the living God. So theology should be studied with expectation and with awe. Since it is God we are talking about, it is not surprising that the more we study, the bigger and more exciting God gets. Some people have been afraid that if they study theology their faith will be undermined, but the opposite is the case.

A faith that cannot be examined cannot be trusted and cannot be shared, whereas a faith that is explored prayerfully and in good company gets richer and richer. As we study theology, we find ourselves resourced and challenged by the faith, understanding and prayer of those who have gone before us. But we live in a culture that increasingly does not know God, does not know that human beings are loved and called to live transformed lives, in the likeness of Jesus Christ, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is a message of such good news that we must equip ourselves to share it. We have the privilege of living in the Spirit because others have shared their faith with us. Now it is our turn. God’s Church and God’s world need theologians on fire with the knowledge and love of God, and skilled at helping people to see God at work in our world.

Student Story: Jack Hedger

Jack Hedger is an undergraduate studying at St Mellitus College, East Midlands.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF I’m Jack, I go to St Mellitus College, East Midlands, and I live in Wolverhampton. Alongside my studies I am a freelance graphic designer, and my wife and I run an organisation called Colab. WHAT DREW YOU TO STUDY AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? I had always wanted to do some further study, and always had an interest in theology. After some sudden work and life changes, I felt a nudge towards theological study. I had the feeling that Jesus wanted to continue to form & shape me through some kind of training, and came to an open day to see if this was that. WHAT HAS BEEN A HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR STUDIES? I had felt, for a long time, like an outsider. Many people close to me had found my desire to ask questions and understand philosophy and theology uncomfortable; even leading to close friends questioning if I was still a Christian. When I came to the college I found that there was a group of people like me who loved big questions and mystery. I don’t feel like a stranger to my own tradition at St Mellitus College, I feel welcome, and I feel able to be myself.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TIME AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? There are many ways that I could answer this question. Overall, it’s been great. I’ve enjoyed joining the community, training and learning, and exploring big topics. But that’s not to say that it hasn’t been difficult too! There have been a lot of opportunities for growth, and there have been moments of helpful challenge from the staff team and the lecturers, as well as the wider reading. I truly feel like Jesus is staying true to the promise of forming and shaping me through my time at the college. HOW IS YOUR LEADERSHIP BEING SHAPED BY YOUR STUDIES? My understanding and respect for my local church’s liturgical practice, and wider, for the Church’s mission and worship, is definitely being shaped. I think my studies are part of what God is doing in me at the moment, refining and shaping me and making me a better leader.

Jack

Routes Overview At the heart of every pathway we offer is our St Mellitus College ethos — theological study embedded in a local church or ministry context. Whatever route you go down your training will reflect creatively on this: studying in the classroom while serving in your community.

Our different routes into study are:

ORDINATION TRAINING INDEPENDENT STUDY PETER STREAM CALEB STREAM LICENSED LAY MINISTRY

Ordination Training St Mellitus College specialises in training women and men for ordination in the Church of England. Full-time and part-time programmes are available, combining academic excellence and practical experience, with a strong focus on the personal formation of each candidate for ordained ministry. The College has a first-rate academic teaching staff, alongside a wide range of visiting professors and associate lecturers. We draw on a pool of experienced church practitioners who help develop each ordinand’s capacity for effective church leadership. St Mellitus College has a reputation for teaching excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, providing outstanding academic provision and ensuring students are significantly challenged to achieve their full potential. All our ordinands are rooted in local churches or mission contexts whilst undertaking their theological study. On the full-time route, ordinands spend half their week in a church context, ministering under a training supervisor, whilst our part-time ordinands learn to integrate their theological studies into their working life or local church context.

All ordinands from across the country gather together for College residentials, which provide a rich context for worship, formation, spiritual growth, and friendships across the breadth of the Church of England. Students engage in academic study, leadership development and reflection throughout the term, in addition to one or two days per week for personal study, five residential weekends and one retreat weekend through the year, and one annual residential week. Each ordinand is part of a Formation Group, consisting of a small group of ordinands who journey together through training, with their Tutor acting as the primary point of contact for academic and pastoral support and formation. We also have an excellent chaplaincy team in college, and a counsellor, who along with the staff team are dedicated to prayerfully and professionally supporting our students. To train for ordination, any prospective student must have a recommendation for training from a Church of England Bishop.

I’m not sure I would’ve gone for ordination training if St Mellitus College, or something like it, wasn’t on offer.

Independent Study We believe that studying theology is important for all Christians to explore and live out our faith and calling. Theology is not just for those involved in formal church leadership, but for anyone wanting to grow as disciples and present a coherent witness in a changing world. Whatever your context, as an independent student at St Mellitus College you will be enabled to think theologically about what you do, and how you do it.

You will be equipped in your ministry and mission in your workplace, your church, at home, or wherever you may be. Independent training at St Mellitus College is designed to fit around your context, to help you explore what it might look like to study and live out a practical theology, immersed in your locality.

We see our study as honouring and loving God with our minds.

Peter Stream Jesus saw in Peter the gifts and potential for an incredible ministry that he was calling him to, even though others couldn’t see it at first (Acts 4). The Peter Stream is a yearlong programme designed to identify and encourage the gifts and calling of people from underrepresented backgrounds. The Peter Stream offers a distinctive experience, complementing the Church of England discernment process by offering candidates a diverse community of peers to journey closely with throughout the year, as well as

The Peter Stream helped me to understand what calling is, and what vocation meant.

theological and formational teaching within the context of a worshipping community at St Mellitus College. The focus of the programme is loving candidates through the process by offering support, putting at the centre growing in faith in Jesus and the gifts they have been given. The Peter Stream exists to redress the most significant underrepresentation in ordained leadership in the Church of England — ethnic, social, educational — and so is open to candidates from those demographics.

Caleb Stream The Caleb Stream is a discernment and training pathway towards Church of England ordination for mature lay leaders with leadership experience, enabling them to train for the diaconate within one year.

This stream aims to mobilise a generation rich in Christian leadership and life experience to serve in parishes across the UK.

Caleb was strong and vigorous in exercising his ministry well into his mature years ( Joshua 14).

My studies have given me a greater confidence in my teaching of scripture.

Licensed Lay Ministry LLMs are trained for lay leadership within their local churches and are authorised by the Church to teach, preach, lead worship and give pastoral care. They are leaders in mission and ministry in their parishes and personal contexts. We deliver Licensed Lay Ministry (LLM) training in partnership with the Dioceses of London and Chelmsford. To join the LLM programme at St Mellitus College, students first go through a period of discernment and

selection in their local churches and diocese, and are then recommended for training. If selected, training usually lasts three years and is designed to develop theological understanding and practical ministerial skills. In London, LLMs will study for a Diploma in Theology, Ministry and Mission. In Chelmsford, LLMs will study for a Certificate in Theology, Ministry and Mission.

Increasingly I am able to take a bigger role in the church, and I love it.

Student Story: Joy Hunter

Joy is a first year ordinand studing the MA TMM at St Mellitus College, London Mondays.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF I’m Joy, I am an Ordinand in West London doing a Masters in Systematic Theology. Before starting to train I was working as a Student Pastor. I am half Spanish, half English and in my free time enjoy Salsa dancing. WHAT DREW YOU TO STUDY AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? I liked the idea of being context based so I could practically experience local church ministry whilst completing my studies. I also valued the wide level of representation at St Mellitus College of the expressions held within the Church of England. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO TRAIN FOR ORDINATION AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? The teaching you receive comes from lecturers who don’t just equip you on an academic level but also inspire you to go deeper in your faith. Not only will you grow in knowledge of the Bible, you will also be given tools to help you flourish in your future ministry.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TIME AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? The lectures we have had so far have been extremely thought provoking and I feel a sense of privilege to be given this time to deepen my understanding of scripture. I also feel that the chapel services have already started to broaden my understanding of worship by challenging me to try new things. HOW HAS YOUR TRAINING IMPACTED YOUR MINISTRY NOW? I am finding that training is already helping me grow in confidence through the input, feedback and space given to me as I step into trying new things. The college have been very good at equally supporting me in both my studies and church placement.

Joy

You will be given tools to help you flourish in your future ministry.

In my time at St Mellitus College, my Formation Group has been a source of mutual strength and support. I’ve made friendships that will last and learned so much from my fellow students.

Formation At St Mellitus College you will be stretched by the theology you study and have the opportunity to reflect on the sort of person that you are becoming, the qualities of your character, and the way you engage in relationships with others as a disciple of Christ. We call this formation. At its most fundamental level, ‘formation’ is the shaping of the whole person after the likeness of Christ. To facilitate this, we focus on aspects of development that include personality, character, relationships, leadership, collaboration and community. All students study theology alongside being engaged in some form of Christian mission and ministry, either in the workplace or in the context of the church and world. This model of training, with theology and practice intertwined, facilitates the formation of strong theological reflectors and reflective practitioners. As it involves the whole of our beings, the process of formation in the Spirit can be exhilarating, stretching and liberating as we grow in self-understanding and become more aware of the impact we have on others.

The experience is an exciting time of discovery. Formation can be challenging and painful, as we encounter aspects of ourselves which are unexpected or surprising. This is often the most important part of the formational journey, and the more honest we are, and able to engage with the demands of the process, the more profound the possibility of growth and change. Formation groups are offered to Ordinand, Licensed Lay Ministry, Youth Ministry, Undergraduate and Postgraduate students and play a vital role in the life of the College. They provide a regular opportunity for prayer, mutual support, reflection and discussion. A Formation Group Tutor acts as the student’s primary point of academic and pastoral support during their time in the College. Christian formation is ultimately dependent on the transforming work of the Spirit.

Student Story: Selwyn Cush-Etter

Selwyn is a final year ordinand, after starting study as an independent student at St Mellitus College, London.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF I’m from Guyana in South America, I moved to the UK when I was 16. I remember crying out to God in church for him to come and help me. As I went forward for prayer, before anyone laid hands on me I had an encounter with the Holy Spirit that changed my life. That began a new journey, I knew God wanted me to be in full-time ministry, and that led to me studying theology at 19, in Regents College Malvern. I spent some time at YWAM with my wife, and was a primary school teacher in London, and then God reminded me he was calling me to church leadership. WHAT LED YOU TO TRAIN FOR CHURCH LEADERSHIP? I went through the Church of England Ministry Experience scheme, based at St Mellitus College. Through that I felt that God was calling me to the Church of England, even though I had previously been part of Pentecostal and Vineyard churches. WHAT DREW YOU TO STUDY AT ST MELLITUS COLLEGE? One of the reasons was very practical, my wife is a teacher, so for us moving to a residential college wasn’t feasible because

of her job. The second reason was generous orthodoxy, I love the fact that St Mellitus College has a broad range of traditions. We’re not just charismatic, we celebrate other traditions and styles of worship which is great. And finally the lecturers. Because I had already studied here before I had been won over by the standard of lectures, how things are explained, the space given for discussion, and the questions asked have greatly grown me. WHAT HAS BEEN A HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR TRAINING SO FAR? We really love learning here, we value learning and being challenged academically, but we don’t want it to stop at learning. I’ve heard a lot here that our learning should lead to worship, and I really value that. We learn a lot about God, we wrestle with tough questions, but it always comes back to worship.

Selwyn

We value learning and being challenged academically, but we don’t want it to stop at learning. It always comes back to worship.

There has been wonderful mutual support from students and staff, especially from the chaplains who are very proactive in reaching out.

Support Chaplains and Counsellors The college makes available a team of chaplains and counsellors to discuss anything students may be dealing with whilst undertaking their studies. We’re aware that taking on academic study can be a big challenge and often coincides with other changes in people’s lives. Our current students find it such a gift to be able to talk things through with people who are impartial and excellent listeners.

Student Support Every student has a support structure within the College dedicated to them. The College also hosts events to build community amongst the entire student body, including offering retreats for all students, as well as social events during Residential and Teaching Weeks, so that students can build friendships and connect with one another.

Online Resource Once students are enrolled, they are granted access to our online learning platform, Moodle. This is a great tool, catered to each student’s bespoke needs, with module guides, student handbooks, assignment schedules, reading lists – everything they might need to excel as a student at St Mellitus College, as well as an extensive and growing suite of online library resources.

Academic Development We know that many students who begin their studies with us are somewhat daunted about academic study. For some, it is their first venture into Higher Education. For others, it has been many years since they engaged in formal study. St Mellitus College is fully committed to supporting students through their academic work, and while the primary point of contact is their Formation Group Tutor, who will offer encouragement, advice and support with their studies and assignments, the college also offers an optional academic development course, as well as having a dedicated Academic Development Tutor available to provide one-to-one support.

SpLD Support SpLDs (Specific Learning Difficulties), including dyslexia and dyspraxia, are learning difficulties which affect approximately 10% of the general population. St Mellitus College is committed to enabling students with these learning difficulties to access its programmes without being disadvantaged and therefore makes reasonable adjustments to programmes in order to enable such students to participate without disadvantage. Tailored packages of support are also available according to the needs of the individual students. St Mellitus College is committed to making reasonable adjustments to ensure students can study with us.
