KINDERGARTEN As we welcome our new Saints on campus, we introduce them to the world of academics through play and foundational skill-building.

Students develop relationships with their classmates and in the wider community with fifth-grade buddies, service and agriculture-based field trips, and celebrations to mark their growth. It is a special year of making friends and learning about God’s love. Learning dispositions such as tenacity, organization, courage, collaboration, and focus begin to take root during the kindergarten year.

Language Arts

This year students make great strides in foundational reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. They explore concepts of print, phonemic awareness, word recognition, and comprehension of text. Weekly oral presentations and reports help students develop confidence and communication skills.

Mathematics

Students focus on counting with one to one correspondence, comparing numbers and sets, representing and solving addition and subtraction, number composition, place value to 19, and early geometry skills.

Religion

Students learn to see themselves as the body of the Church as they begin their faith journey together at St. Matthew. They experience God’s love through religion class and weekly Masses. The children begin to develop their relationship with Jesus Christ, and learn that He is our friend and teacher. They encounter Mary, our Mother, and other saints and learn to pray in a variety of ways and contexts.

Science

Students continue their exploration of the world around them with concepts such plant and animal needs, weather patterns, and pushes and pulls. Hands-on learning provides students with an understanding of and appreciation for God’s Creation.

Kindergarteners begin their school journey by investigating what makes a community. They learn about good citizenship, symbols, holidays, and events and figures in American history through field trips, celebrations, discussion, and dramatic play.

Students sing, play, explore, create, document, and share musical ideas and choices while experiencing and exploring the basic elements of music through movement and play. Kindergarten music students begin to explore and gain confidence to participate in liturgical music highlighted in weekly Mass.

Our program offers the opportunity to experience movement through steps and space. The students identify parts of the body and learn the importance of stretching.

The children begin the process of acquiring a second language by learning colors, numbers, clothing and conversational greetings in Spanish. Their understanding of community is enhanced as they learn to express what they encounter in their environment in a second language. Family, foods and drinks, and places in the community are introduced and will be reviewed and augmented in the succeeding years.

FIRST GRADE First grade is a time to tap into students’ natural curiosity and sense of wonder in their ever-expanding academic, social, and spiritual world. They begin to think of themselves as “big kids” with the accompanying skills and knowledge that allow them to read, write, add and subtract, pray, and play more independently than ever before.The 100th day celebration and field trip to CuriOdyssey support the students’ new awareness of their growing abilities and strengths.

Language Arts

Mathematics

First grade is an exciting time for our new readers. First graders receive a strong foundation in phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling. Students gain decoding and comprehension tools through independent reading, small group instruction, storytelling, and read-alouds. The “Mystery reader” is a favorite first-grade tradition that allows students to interact with their learning community and see adults model a reading-rich life.

STEM activities, games, manipulatives, and small-group instruction provide hands-on learning experiences to support first graders’ acquisition of a strong number sense. Students learn to manipulate numbers with addition, subtraction, and place value, and begin to conceptualize geometric principles.

Religion

Students continue to develop their relationship with Jesus as they participate in and develop understanding of the parts of the Mass. They learn about and experience the Liturgical year through interaction with the class prayer center and seasonal activities. Students read and listen to Bible stories and learn to integrate Christian values into their daily lives. Each student builds a rosary and the pastor blesses them in a special way.

Science

Science instruction in first-grade capitalizes on students’ natural curiosity with studies of life and the universe. Students encounter plant and animal life cycles and characteristics of different species, and explore the science of sound, shadows and light, and objects in the sky.

The Social Studies curriculum encourages students to develop an understanding of different cultures and traditions, while emphasizing aspects and values that are shared across time and place. Students love to study and reenact the Johnny Appleseed and other folk-hero stories, as well as read and draw simple maps.

Students in first grade sing, listen to, and share musical ideas and choices while experiencing and exploring music through movement. They dive further into the core elements of music - tempo, beat and dynamics.

Students continue to learn and participate with liturgical music.

Students participate in developmentally appropriate skills. They land on their feet, throw underhand and overhand, kick, strike a balloon, identify the right and left side stretch, and recognize that the heart is the most important organ.

We continue to reinforce previous vocabulary learned in Kinder while augmenting with topics such as: days of the week, months of the year, parts of the body, family relations, name of animals, articles of clothing. Prayers begun in Kinder are further solidified.

SECOND GRADE Second grade is a year of enormous academic, social, and especially spiritual growth. First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are focal points of the year as students develop an understanding of themselves as members of the Church and a Christian worldview.

Christian values are integrated into academic subjects as students are encouraged to reflect and analyze in a deeper way that befits their new skills and responsibilities.

Language Arts

Second-graders explore longer and more complex ideas in varied texts and text structures. They develop understanding of the organization of text into topics and paragraphs and the organization of language into grammatical structures. As the students gain literacy skills, they study the classic children’s story Charlotte’s Web, which is a favorite text of the year.

Mathematics

Students continue to develop their number sense with different strategies to add and subtract one, two, and three digit numbers, with a special emphasis on place value. Students add and subtract within 100, memorize sums and fact families, and solve word problems using strategies such as underlining important information and drawing pictures.

Religion

This is a special year as the students receive their Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Students will learn and pray together, committing prayers such as the Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, and the Act of Contrition to memory. They revisit important events in their faith lives by interviewing parents and Godparents about their baptism and namesakes.

Science

The students explore concepts of matter, landforms, and biodiversity. For example, students investigate a variety of materials in a number of ways. Students will explore texture, hardness, color, strength, flexibility and absorbency of different items.

Social Studies

The second grade students learn about everyday heroes who make a difference.

Students also learn about communities and the environment around them.

Music

Students in second grade music heighten their liturgical music connection through preparation for First Communion. They continue to develop a connection and in depth understanding of the elements, including dynamics, beat, pitch, rhythm, melody, tempo, and meter.

Physical Education

The students continue to develop skills with jumping, skipping and leaping.

The students practice striking a ball, and foot dribbles.

Spanish

We keep growing our knowledge of greetings, salutations, and prayers.

We put together a booklet about “La familia”. We commit to memorizing “el alfabeto” along with the beginning foundation of descriptive words, more nouns, and expressions about weather conditions.

My experience with St Matt’s second grade has been a rewarding experience for our entire family. We have had two children go through the second grade program and I saw incredible growth with both children during the process. The Second Grade teachers work so well together. THIRD GRADE Third graders become more independent learners as they gain confidence in their ever-growing academic and social skills. Intentional and meaningful use of technology in the classroom affords students the ability to develop 21st century skills and be exposed to more of the wonders of the world at large.

Class novels provide a shared reading experience and opportunity to grow as a community of readers. A trip to the local Woodside Store, a historic journey back in early American history, is a fun field trip students look forward to this year.

Language Arts

The students develop their understanding of writing as an important vehicle for self-expression and learning as they engage in research projects, take notes, and learn to put information in their own words and write opinion, expository and narrative texts. In reading, students develop the ability to distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters. Students develop grade-specific vocabulary and expand their knowledge of parts of speech, as well as sentence and paragraph formation.

Mathematics

We strengthen the students’ addition and subtraction skills by learning new strategies to add and subtract numbers within 1,000. We discuss how to collect and represent data in various types of tables and graphs, and develop concepts and skills to multiply and divide whole numbers within 100. We begin to identify, draw, and compare fractions with use of manipulatives and visualization. Geometric concepts such as area and perimeter and lines and angles are introduced.

Religion

Students continue to grow in confidence and independence along their spiritual journey. They deepen their understanding of prayer and relationship with Jesus.

They develop a more comprehensive view of a Christian life as they study the Great Commandment, beatitudes, virtues, and saints. Students continue to commit prayers to memory as they aim to be able to pray the Rosary by the end of the year.

Science

Students will learn how to define problems and solutions in scientific terms. This includes learning about forces, plant life cycles, animal traits and adaptations, fossils and concepts related to weather tracking. Students will build a weather protection system out of recycled items in order to save their newly built cardboard house from extreme climate events such as sleet, snow, hail, flooding and tornadoes.

Social Studies

Traditions, cultures, and historical events that affected Indigenous People provide a focus for the third grade year, as students research and learn about the peoples and events that shaped our nation. We discuss the U.S. Government, citizenship and participation, and their individual ability to make a difference in their community.

They explore the concepts of the economy and how to spend money wisely in the free market.

Music

Spanish

Students expand on their musical knowledge by focusing on the four main instrument families - Brass, Woodwind, Strings and Percussion. We spend time learning about the orchestra and how all the instruments work together to create music.

This year the students are doing more in the gymnastic area with forward rolls, jump rope, balance, thorough warm-up and cool down exercises. Students enjoy setting personal goals with the beep test.

We introduce interrogatives, and round up vocabulary in connection to the calendar.

We focus on the students’ pronunciation of the language and as we begin our transition to the written language, we emphasize the importance of full-sentence responses in the language.

FOURTH GRADE This last year “on the ramp” (the elementary side of the campus) is bittersweet, as students are able to express themselves more maturely and begin to leave some hallmarks of childhood behind. In service of this development, students learn organizational skills and build personal responsibility, as well as dive more deeply into intellectual pursuits. The mission project provides opportunities for cross-curricular discovery as the students read, research, write, and create a representation of their assigned mission. Life in early California comes alive as students participate in activities during a field trip to a local ranch. The students participate in Building Bridges, a social-emotional learning program that emphasizes Christian values.

Language Arts

Reading and writing are integrated with social studies in a special way this year as students read historical fiction and learn research, expository, and narrative writing techniques. Students enhance their comprehension skills of a variety of texts with exposure to and engagement with non-fiction text features, author’s choices and purpose, and different genres. Students enjoy reading novels such as The Lemonade War, By the Great Horn Spoon and Island of the Blue Dolphins as a class.

Mathematics

Students enjoy applying their deeper and new understanding of mathematical concepts to projects that expose them to math in daily life. A restaurant project allows students to work with, combine, and divide whole numbers and decimals as they learn how to split a bill between friends. Students develop their understanding of fractions as they make connections to daily tasks such as baking and cooking.

Religion

Fourth graders are able to participate more fully in liturgies and enjoy experiencing the parts of the Mass they study in class. In addition to studying Saint Junipero Serra as part of their mission projects, each student also explores the life of a saint they choose through research, writing and presentation. The students dive deeply into the meaning of each sacrament, practice the parts of the Rosary, and learn about the Stations of the Cross.

Science

Fourth graders use the scientific method to explore and discover the laws of energy.

The students collaborate and innovate by developing new technology that mimics animal senses. Hands-on activities provide opportunities for students to discover how the earth has been shaped, how rocks are formed, and the history within fossils.

Social Studies

In the fourth grade, the students dive deeply into California history. The diversity that formed California both before and after statehood is the theme and basis for study this year. Students identify the regions of California and discover the native Californians that lived in each one. They learn about how explorers and missions shaped California.

Students discover the Gold Rush and California statehood through hands-on activities.

They develop an understanding of California industry and agriculture since becoming a state.

Music

Students in music begin to learn the basics of reading notes and general music symbols. We apply this knowledge to playing recorders. Fourth grade music also spends time learning about song formats like Rondo and Sonata.

Physical Education

Students learn to change direction when playing and the principles of offensive and defensive plays. They throw and catch, kick, punt, and dribble, and stretch.

Spanish

As the criteria for pronunciation of the language is by now mostly established, our focus begins to shift to the grammatical components. We continue building vocabulary of home appliances, fruits, table settings, and we expand our knowledge of numbers. We begin to express emotions and sensations and introduce new prayers and songs.

My favorite book we read was By the Great Horn Spoon. This book is about a kid named Jack and a character named Praiseworthy who run away to try to find gold in California during the Gold Rush.

After we read the book, we did a project. It was my favorite project in fourth grade! We made a movie where we acted out one chapter where Jack meets a miner named Pitchpine Billy.

FIFTH GRADE Fifth grade is an exciting year when students join the junior high students on campus in the main building. Students look forward to developing relationships with their kindergarten buddies, giving them an opportunity to internalize and model being a true PEARL. American history comes alive this year with the students performing a walkthrough of the American Revolution in an on-campus day-long reenactment.

Additionally, students will hone their research skills working on a state research report.

Language Arts

Fifth grade is a time when students confidently read and write both for pleasure and learning. They explore different kinds of texts and ways to glean meaning from those texts. Varied forms of note-taking, outlining, summarizing, and responding to text support students development as academic readers. Students describe how a narrator’s point of view influences how events are described and use and interpret figurative language.

Mathematics

The students solidify their ability to multiply and divide whole numbers using a variety of strategies. Students use and manipulate fractions and decimals, continuing to apply these skills to real-world situations and as an intellectual exercise. They solve varied numerical expressions and learn the order of operations, and apply critical thinking to word problems.

Religion

Evangelization comes alive in fifth grade as students help their kindergarten buddies learn about their faith. They also dive more deeply into Church teaching as they explore the mysteries of the Incarnation and true presence of Christ in the Eucharist. They deepen their faith in prayers such as the Lord’s Prayer, the Prayer to the Holy Spirit, and the Magnificat. Students also continue to develop their understanding of the Sacraments, with a focus on the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Science

Fifth grade is an exciting time of exploration as the students encounter ecosystems and the ways life changes and thrives within them, matter and the make-up of our universe, and scientific classification and data collection. Students construct and deepen their scientific skills and knowledge through lab activities such as owl pellet dissections and making their own ice cream.

Social Studies

From the Age of Exploration to the history of the Americas until 1850, students love to read about, research, and dramatize social studies this year. The American Revolution is a favorite unit of study that culminates in the Walk Through the American Revolution, a special experience replete with games, skits, and even costumes!

Music

As students continue to engage in music making, they create a deeper knowledge of all elements. 5th grade musicians work on playing and composing their own music using various classroom instruments. They also spend time learning about classic musical theater and other performing arts genres.

Physical Education

The students will serve, dribble and pass to an intended target, create dance, and perform a routine to music. They will learn the importance of warm-up and cool-down exercises, and set fitness goals.

Spanish

We build a strong foundation of gender and number agreement in articles, nouns, and adjectives in sentences. All interrogatives are fully integrated and the thorough conjugation in the present tense of some irregular verbs: ser, estar, tener. We also dissect possessive adjectives and continue with the expansion of vocabulary begun in the previous years while underscoring customs and traditions of the peoples of the Spanish-speaking world.

Language Arts Students explore themes of personal responsibility, identity, and community through fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. Literary analysis is introduced as students learn to write clear claims and support them with textual evidence. Students consider author choices and characterization as well as common patterns that can be found throughout literature.

Mathematics Students gain mastery and fluency of mathematical skills, including arithmetic, logical reasoning, and geometry. They become critical thinkers and learn to persevere in multi-step problem solving, not only relying on the mathematical intuition and mental math, but also applying systematic problem solving strategies.

Religion Sixth-graders continue their faith journey by diving deeply into the Apostolic and Nicene Creeds, taking a closer look at what it means to profess our faith. Students read and reflect on the Gospel

SIXTH GRADE

message, apply it to their lives, and pray together.

Science In 6th grade, students explore life in many forms, especially human life. Students connect basic principles of life to different systems on Earth. Students discover how external stimuli affect life, the basics of genetics, cells, body systems, weather, and climate.

Social Studies This grade is a survey of the origins of man and the establishment of civilizations. Students encounter ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Hebrew People, Greece, Africa, and the Roman Empire and examine the lasting legacies of classical civilizations in the modern world. Skills such as organization, note taking, artistic expression, sequencing events, cause and effect, and persuasive writing are emphasized.

Language Arts 7th graders embark on a cross-curricular experience with varied texts as they encounter and analyze concepts explored in medieval history. Students analyze and use figurative language while building textual evidence-based inferences and claims about the settings and plots of each text. Students use author models to improve their own writing, and love to write a fable-style narrative in the mode of Kipling’s Rikki Tikki Tavi.

Mathematics Students learn to read and understand word problems. They ascertain the relevant information and translate the problem into a mathematical model. They apply systematic strategies in solving, analyzing and verifying the solution. Students learn to apply their critical and logical thinking to geometry and construct and de-

Religion Building Christian community is the foundation of the 7th grade year, as students participate in team-building and empathetic listening activities. Students pray together using scripture and meditation and practice different forms of prayer including adoration, blessing, petition, intercession, thanksgiving and praise.

Students learn to recognize and give thanks for the gifts from God in their lives.

Science In 7th grade, students build off of last year’s topics as they dive deeply into ecosystems and the effects of living and nonliving things on each other. Students discover how human activities have repercussions on Earth and how matter and energy can affect organisms. The science fair is an exciting experience for 7th graders as they develop a scientific question and hypothesis and then design an experiment to test that hypothesis. Students love to show their creativity and new knowledge as they present their findings at open house in January. Winners of the school science fair go on to present their projects at the county science fair.

Social Studies In this grade students explore connections between history, geography and culture as they relate to medieval history. The year begins at the height of the Roman Empire, the fall of the western half in 476 AD, and the “Dark Ages.” Students examine the rise and spread of Islam, the Crusades, the civilizations of China, Korea, Japan, and India throughout the Middle Ages. Throughout the course students examine essential questions such as “ How does religion affect culture, government, and human behavior during the Middle Ages?”

SEVENTH GRADE

Language Arts 8th graders utilize the analytical and grammatical skills they have been honing through their junior high years to read classic texts such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men and write with concision and power. They investigate the impact of authors’ tone and style and use these to help them develop a strong writer’s voice.

Mathematics Students become creative, critical thinkers and resilient problem solvers. They look for patterns and express structure in repeated reasoning. They learn to generalize basic mathematical concepts and skills into a wider range and scope. Students gain confidence in themselves and take on challenging courses in Math upon entering high school.

Religion

EIGHTH GRADE

This is a special year as students prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation. They explore and reflect on Sacred Scripture, and demonstrate understanding of Revelation. Students apply their knowledge of Church teaching and tradition to their daily lives and develop a deep love of Chrisitian life. They explore vocations with classroom visits from clergy..

Science Physics takes center stage as students learn about and discover different forces and their role in our daily lives. Students delve into evolutionary history and how Earth and its inhabitants have changed over time due to adaptations.

Social Studies 8th graders dive deeply into the founding of our nation through study of the American Revolution, the first presidents, and the unanswered question of slavery in America leading to the Civil War. This course stresses that students think critically and formulate opinions based on reason and evidence. Students read, research, and reflect through artistic presentation, speaking, and writing about historical and contemporary issues, making relevant connections between class topics and the world around them.

Physical Education Junior high focuses on body management, movement, manipulative, and rhythmic skills. There is a strong emphasis on explicit fitness concepts and fitness testing. Social and life skills are also central to the curriculum, with special attention on ownership, leadership, self direction, and initiative development. The activities include: volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball, flag football, lacrosse, team handball, hockey, dance, gymnastics, and racquet sports.

Music As we move into Junior High, music class focuses more on specific genres of music and performance rather than the core skills of music theory. This allows students to go into depth on many different avenues of performing arts and begin to form their own musical identities. Students study Opera at the beginning of each year, then move on to topics like Classic Rock, Jazz, the history of the radio, Foley artistry and movie scores and Singer Songwriters.

Students have the opportunity to participate in cantoring weekly Mass and are tasked with taking deeper ownership of music ministry and preparation.

Spanish foundation of vocabulary that is cemented on a strong understanding of the grammatical structure of the language: we study verbs in their variety through the present, present progressive, preterite of regular and irregular verbs while fully exploring the direct and indirect object pronouns use. This comprehensive curriculum ensures that students not only gain a diverse set of technological skills but also are well-prepared for the challenges of the future.
