St Mary’s University Coaching Bursary GUIDANCE NOTES FOR 2017/2018 APPLICANTS, TERMS AND CONDITIONS AND HOW TO APPLY

Purpose of funding To support students at St Mary’s to gain sports coaching qualifications, officiating qualifications and first aid qualifications.

Aims      

Increase the number of qualified coaches in the University Increase the number of qualified officials in the University Increase the number of qualified first aid personnel in student sport clubs Improve the quality of coaching offered in student sport clubs Strengthen and extend coaching activity in student sport clubs Increase the number of students volunteering in sport

Eligibility     

Open to all existing students of St Mary’s University (you do not have to be a member of a sports team) All those receiving a bursary will be required to provide voluntary service to a Sport St Mary’s programme Funding will only be provided for qualifications awarded/recognised by the relevant national governing body of sport Students must not be receiving similar level support already and thus replicate funding You must be committed to attend and complete the course (Please note – individuals who don’t attend or complete the course will have to repay in full any bursary monies received, and/or pay any additional costs resulting from booking onto an alternative course or re­taking the course)

What you can apply for Our focus is on making coaching bursaries available for the following:    

NGB UKCC Level 1 or Level 2 qualifications. (Level 3 qualifications may be supported – please get in contact if this is something you are interested in) Any prerequisite courses necessary in order to do Level 1 courses (e.g. Rugby Ready) Officials training i.e. umpiring and referee courses Other relevant qualifications, such as Emergency First Aid

Enhance your CV – A recent study (link) by British University & Colleges Sport (BUCS) showed conclusively that employers appoint graduates with coaching, leadership, teaching and volunteering qualifications. Particpating and volunteering in sport is associated with a salary increase of between £4200 and £5600 over those who do not take part Personal development – increase your organisational, leadership and communication skills ensuring you even more employable when you graduate.

Self­satisfaction ­ you can have a positive influence on people’s lifelong involvement in sport and be instrumental in helping people learn new skills.

Nationally recognised qualification – which no­one can take away from you!

Help your club – Improve the standard of coaching within your club and ensure higher quality sessions are delivered

Your commitment if you are awarded a bursary 

   



For a level 1 qualification, individuals are required to provide a minimum of 10­15 hours coaching/volunteering. For level 2 qualifications you will provide a minimum of 15­25 hours. The exact amount will be determined by the Sports Development team Your volunteering hours need to be completed within 12 months of taking your NGB award. Final year students must complete voluntary hours by the end of June 2018 For officials/refereeing/umpiring awards – individuals are required to volunteer 10 hours to our Sports Development programmes or to your respective student sport club For the One Day Emergency First Aid course, you will be required to be a named First aider for the student sports club If you feel you will be unable to commit to the required volunteering hours to support your application, the Sports Development team can only award a maximum of 25% funding toward the NGB course. You will need to also clearly demonstrate to us in your application why we should support your application for funding Applicants will also be required to maintain regular contact with the Sports Development team and attend one Coaching Bursary meeting per term. Applicants are expected to show an exemplary standard of sporting and personal conduct at all times, compatible with the interest of their sport and which uphold the core values and good name of the University

All applications will be assessed by the Sport Development team. If a student is successful, they will be expected to:    





Book onto the course and pay for it directly by 30th June 2018 or the bursary may not be awarded Provide UK bank account details so that the bursary can be provided Repay the bursary in full if the course is not attended or voluntary hours are not completed Show an exemplary standard of sporting and personal conduct at all times, compatible with the interest of your sport and which uphold the core values and good name of the University Provide a minimum number of volunteer hours as detailed above. These hours must be provided within one year of receiving the bursary or by the end of May of their graduating year, whichever is sooner Recipient is required to maintain regular contact with the Sports Development team regarding the qualification that they are taking and attend one Coaching Bursary meeting per term.

Following the submission of your application you will be required to attend a meeting to discuss your application in further detail and determine your suitability for a bursary.

Closing Date Please note that applications are accepted throughout the academic year with the final deadline occurring on 15th June 2018.

Applications received after this date will not be assessed.
