The St. Mary’s Ryken house system fosters authentic community and builds unity across all grade levels and interest groups while creating a school culture that competes with pride, spirit and familial charity. The house system is rooted in Catholic Social Teaching principles of human dignity and solidarity.
How does the house system work?
Everyone in the SMR school community (students, faculty and staff) is placed into one of four houses. Each house consists of eight smaller advisory groups with students from each grade level. Students are given opportunities to lead within their house and their advisory.
Competitions take place between the houses throughout the year. These competitions help to build relationships among house members and connections among the grade levels. Points may be awarded on either an individual or house-wide basis, depending on the nature of the competition.
The houses of SMR
These names all have significance within our larger SMR heritage, of both Ryken High School and St. Mary’s Academy (the two schools that merged to form SMR in 1981). In addition, each house has a distinct color under which it competes.
Bruges – Green (Broozh - rhymes with rouge)
City in Belgium where Theodore J. Ryken founded the Xaverian Brothers
Concordia – Grey
Harmony; from the motto of the Congregation of Xaverian Brothers, Concordia res parvae crescunt (“In harmony, small things grow”)
Nazareth – Blue
Town in Kentucky where the Sisters of Charity were established
Caritas – White (KAH-ree-tahs)
Love for all; from the motto of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Caritas Christi urget nos (“The love of Christ impels us”)
Entrance gate
When school is in session, the entrance gate to campus will be open for morning arrival and after-school pickup, and closed during the school day from 8:10 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. For late arrivals and early departures, students should be signed in/out at the Main Office, located in Paschal Hall. All visits to campus must be pre-arranged, and visitors must sign in at the Main Office before being granted access to campus. If you plan to visit campus, please email attendance@smrhs.org
Every school day a School Resource Officer is on duty to ensure our campus is secure from 8:10 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.
Morning student drop-off
Parents enter campus and drop off students using rows 4 and 5 of the main parking area located on the upper campus (Donnie Williams Center and Stadium).
Afternoon student pickup
Parents enter campus and pick up students in rows 4 and 5 of the main parking area located on the upper campus (Donnie Williams Center and Stadium). Traffic is not permitted to exit campus until all buses have been dismissed.
Traffic is discouraged on the lower campus for the safety of our students from 7:50 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.
10. Entrance gate and Paschal Hall, including the main office, Flight Academy and MIL STEM Innovation and Computer Labs
11. Softball field
12. Student drop-off and pickup lanes and student parking lot
There are a variety of ways to stay in touch with all the latest SMR news and events.
Principal’s newsletter
The Principal’s Office publishes an electronic newsletter every two weeks during the school year. The newsletter is sent by email to all SMR parents, students, coaches, faculty and staff members. It contains important academic, student life, campus ministry, athletic and fine arts news and events. New families will receive their first newsletter in June.
Athletics newsletter
Every Sunday families receive an update from our Director of Athletics about practice and game schedules and other events that pertain to the entire SMR community. New families will receive their first newsletter on June 1.

Social media
Be sure to follow SMR on Facebook and Instagram to stay up on all the latest happenings, student achievements and news from the classrooms.
Students staying after school must receive permission from a teacher and remain under supervision until departure unless they are attending a school-sponsored activity. Students are not permitted on school grounds without teacher permission and/or adult supervision.
Student identification (“keycards”) must be worn at all times. They are a required uniform item that also allows students to access campus buildings as well as purchase food at the Campus Cafe (with an associated ‘My Kids Spending’ account).
An after-school homework lab is available Monday-Thursday from 3-5 p.m. It is a quiet area for students to study and complete their homework while they wait for the late/activity bus.
Various field trips are scheduled throughout your child’s four years at SMR. Most are dependent on specific classes they are enrolled in and will vary from year to year.
The Campus Ministry department hosts daily prayer and Mass, monthly all-school Mass and a Spiritual Direction program. Parents are welcome to attend monthly all-school Mass. Annual spiritual retreats also provide students with the opportunity to take time out and evaluate the faith aspects of their lives and to renew their sense of the centrality of God in all they do. Retreats are required for freshmen, sophomores and juniors, and are offered to seniors. Alumni often say that retreats were the most memorable part of their St. Mary’s Ryken experience.
The SMR counseling team supports students socially, emotionally and academically throughout their four years. Students are assigned a counselor based on the student’s last name and will stay with that counselor throughout their time in high school. This fosters a strong counselor-student relationship.
Small group counseling based on students’ needs
On-site licensed school therapist available to meet with students needing additional support
Classroom guidance lessons
A college and career readiness program to aid students in identifying strengths and interests for post-secondary goals
A robust college preparation and application process curriculum integrated into academic classes
College night events with appropriate content for each grade level and parents
Annual on-campus college fair with over 60 colleges represented SMR-sponsored college tours during the school year
Student workshops on how to write college essays, apply for scholarships, apply to college and choose the right school
Naviance enables SMR students and parents to access a comprehensive website to help make decisions about colleges and careers. This online platform provides up-to-date information specific to our school so the Counseling Department can track and analyze data about college and career plans.
Naviance allows students to:
Keep track of the process: Build a resume, complete online surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and careers
Research careers: Through a variety of interest inventories, students can learn more about their strengths and abilities as they relate to potential occupations
Search for scholarships: Access a national database of over 3.5 million scholarships worth more than $18 billion
Coffee With SMR Counselors
Coffee With SMR Counselors is held quarterly. These morning events are open to all SMR parents and are an opportunity to talk to the counseling team about various topics, including mental health, technology addiction, course selection, and making the most of summer vacation.
If you have any questions about school counseling services, please contact Director of School Counseling Christine Jaffurs at christine.jaffurs@smrhs.org or 301-373-4166.
X-hour stands for Xaverian Hour and is a daily time when students can join a study group, attend Mass, receive tutoring assistance or participate in clubs. X-hour enables all SMR students to participate in extracurricular activities and seek help from faculty during the school day, no matter what they have scheduled after school.
Each student’s homeroom teacher serves as their adviser. While coursespecific questions are usually best directed to that course’s teacher, advisers are your primary contact for any other questions or if you just need help getting pointed in the right direction. They serve as a go-to resource and advocate for your student through graduation.
Believe it or not, tuition alone does not cover how much we spend on each student.
Gifts to the Knight Fund help to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and operating expenses each year. St. Mary’s Ryken also relies on private philanthropy to fund many of the programs and facilities that elevate the school’s academics, athletics, fine arts and service experiences for our students. In short, donations are vital to what makes St. Mary’s Ryken extraordinary. They provide the resources our students need to ensure success while growing in their faith life and becoming more compassionate and caring young adults.
Philanthropic support at every level from parents is particularly important, as it not only helps to fund these critical programs, it also validates St. Mary’s Ryken’s mission to external funders, including corporations and foundations that have the capacity to make large grants. They know that when parents choose to support, SMR is worth their investment.
We hope you will take a moment to consider how you might support St. Mary’s Ryken this school year. Some opportunities are highlighted on this page. If you have questions or would like to support in a different capacity, please contact Michele Minicozzi, Director of Development, at michele.minicozzi@smrhs.org. We are grateful for your support!
Each fall we encourage our students and parents, along with our faculty and staff, to participate in the Knight Raffle & Giving Challenge, which supports the Knight Fund. Each family in our school community is asked to sell $10 raffle tickets or make a donation to the Knight Fund. There are cash prizes for raffle winners and fun incentives for the top sellers. If the fundraising goal is met, President Wood gives all faculty, staff and students two extra days off during Thanksgiving Break! Support the Knight Fund!
Each fall, SMR participates in the National Day of Giving movement, GivingTuesday. This effort incorporates virtual fundraising activities into the national effort to highlight the importance of philanthropy to nonprofits such as St. Mary’s Ryken.
Knights Give Day takes place in February and is one of the school’s biggest fundraisers each year. The focus of the day is encouraging SMR community support of school programming, including the Knight Fund, Endowment, Athletics, Fine Arts, and the Caritas Resource Center to name a few. Participation from parents and alumni at every level validates the school’s mission to large funders in the community. They know when our community gives back, SMR is a worthwhile investment of their gifts and grants.
SMR hosts two community-wide fundraising events that connect parents with alumni and alumni families to encourage new connections and foster existing relationships. Managed by our Development Office, the annual golf tournament is the perfect opportunity for parents and alumni to gather for a fun day of golf and friendship, and the Knight Gala in the spring is our school’s premier fundraising event.
Annual Golf Tournament is Oct. 3, 2025
Knight Gala is March 21, 2026
If you are interested in learning about special event volunteer opportunities, please contact Brandy Duley at brandy.duley@smrhs.org.
The Knights Fine Arts Alliance (KFAA) is a school organization that assists the teachers and administrators in advancing and enriching educational programs in music, visual arts, drama and dance through volunteerism, fundraising and support. For more information about KFAA, please visit www.smrhs.org/arts/kfaa
