It is my great pleasure to share with you the impact of your support in 2019 and to express my sincere thanks to you for the vitally important contribution that you, as our donors and supporters, make to the life of the School. Supporting students through the needs-based Annual Giving Scholarships remains a central focus of the Foundation’s commitment to raising funds to provide opportunities for deserving girls to come to St Mary’s. Your generosity alone makes this possible and I am thrilled that as a result of your support in 2019, a third Scholar joined St Mary’s in February and another girl will have this chance from 2021. The opening months of 2020 have unfolded in ways we could not have imagined. The spread of Covid-19 across the globe, community lockdowns and the resulting financial uncertainty, mean that the number of families facing difficult decisions about their daughters’ education will be more than ever. To help assist families in need, every member of the Board of Governors, the Foundation Board and St Mary’s Executive Team have made a personal gift towards needsbased support.

If you are in a position to support our needsbased Annual Giving Scholarships, we thank you sincerely for your generosity and invite you to do so at www.stmarys.wa.edu.au/mygift. Term 1 at St Mary’s saw the ongoing works to the extension of the Lady Treatt Centre for Music and Dance. At the end of 2019, the Foundation was delighted to confirm a contribution of $1 million towards this development, which will provide students and staff with spacious new rehearsal rooms, a new dance studio and additional practice rooms. From the Board of the St Mary’s Foundation, a heartfelt thank-you for all you have done and all you continue to do. Every gift you make, be it financial or a gift of your expertise and time, makes a valuable and relevant contribution to our students, staff and School. MARLENE CARTER (’63) CHAIR

MRS TUDBALL WITH MRS LORRIE MALEY

P R I N C I PA L’ S PERSPECTIVE Thank you sincerely for your generosity in 2019 and for the many different ways you support our students and School – be it through needs-based scholarships and other awards, resources for our wonderful libraries or helping to enhance our campus and facilities. A particular highlight was the inaugural Giving Day last June. We all know just how life-changing the needs-based Annual Giving Scholarships can be and there was great excitement as your generous donations rolled in. What an amazing community of donors St Mary’s has, where so many are compelled to help others. Your support provided a new Annual Giving Scholarship for 2020, and has also cemented the opportunity for two more girls to begin their St Mary’s journey in the years ahead. I am proud of the many ways that the girls have followed the example set by you, our donors, and embraced a culture of generosity by organising fundraising activities to give back to our wider community. The page opposite shows just a few of their endeavours which have helped others. 3

In 2021, St Mary’s will mark its centenary and it has been an important time for us to reflect on the School’s development since 1921. Our history was brought clearly to my mind when, just before Christmas, it was my pleasure to have lunch with Lorrie Maley (Rowledge ’33). Lorrie, now 103, has been a regular attender at Old Girl events and a donor for many years. She is also one of the few people in our community to have met each of the 10 principals who have led St Mary’s over our 99 year history. What an honour to be able to thank her personally for her wonderful support. St Mary’s is a vibrant, strong and caring school which we can all be proud of. A vital part of this is our amazing community that wraps its arms around the girls to support their learning and I am deeply grateful to you for all you do for the girls at St Mary’s. TAYA H A L D W O R T H

THANK YOU FROM THE ANNUAL GIVING SCHOLARS Since St Mary’s launched the needs-based Annual Giving Scholarship Fund in 2014, over 1000 donors have helped to make the dream of a St Mary’s education a possibility for deserving girls whose families are not in the financial position for them to join our School. The inaugural Annual Giving Scholar graduated from Year 12 in 2019, the second recipient began her St Mary’s journey in the same year and our third scholar, Tayah Aldworth, joined St Mary’s in 2020. We caught up with Tayah a few weeks into Term 1 to find out how she is enjoying being a student at St Mary’s. “My St Mary’s experience so far has been amazing - it seems unreal that I am finally here! I’ve met so many people and there have been so many opportunities. I’ve just come back from camp at Metricup where we stayed in the eco-tents and dorms and did lots of team-building activities. The best bit was going to the beach. I really like my teachers; they are kind and funny, too. I love art and maths and am already involved in dance, hockey, footy and swimming.

F R O M T H E 2019 Annual Giving Scholar “I’ve loved every aspect of life at St Mary’s so far, from the SydneyCanberra trip to the Year 7 Fair, I’ve had so much fun. It’s a joy to come to school every day and go to all of my classes. I enjoy learning and look forward to all of my classes, extension work and homework. My teachers make school an enjoyable environment to be in and the atmosphere is always positive. I have made some really good friends and I appreciate all the support and kindness they have given me. I’m so grateful to have these opportunities.” NAME WITHHELD

There is so much to do at St Mary’s and so many fun things to be a part of. Thank you to all the donors who have made it possible for me to be here. I wouldn’t be here without you.”

The needs-based Annual Giving Scholarships are funded through your gifts alone. Thank you for making the dream of a St Mary’s education come true.

G I V I N G D AY 2 0 1 9 The St Mary’s community came together in spectacular fashion for the inaugural Giving Day on Wednesday 12 June 2019. Together, we achieved something truly amazing for girls who would not have the opportunity to join our School community without financial support. Thanks to the generosity of 574 donors, an incredible $233,673 was raised in just one day for needs-based Annual Giving Scholarships. There was such a wonderful feeling of collective endeavour. A huge thank-you to our matching donors, who inspired so many others to give, to the dedicated parents, Old Girls, staff and friends, who volunteered in the call room and to everyone who made a donation to provide the opportunity of a St Mary’s education for deserving girls. Giving Day’s alignment with the inaugural House Spirit Day ensured a sense of fun and healthy rivalry between the Houses through the Giving Day House Challenge. The School grounds were decorated in House colours and donors gave generously in the name of their House. With your support, our goal is to offer a new scholarship every year for the duration of the student’s senior schooling, providing her with an exceptional foundation for a bright future.

YO U R G I F T F O R NEEDS-BASED SUPPORT With many families now facing an uncertain financial future, St Mary’s needs-based awards will be more important than ever. YO U R 2 020 G I F T

L A D Y T R E AT T ’ S LEGACY RECOGNISES PERFORMING ARTS EXCELLENCE Lady Treatt (Frankie Wilson ’32, Head Girl) was an exceptional benefactor to St Mary’s over many years. In 2015, St Mary’s received news that Lady Treatt had left a gift in her will to endow scholarships. Her generous bequest has enabled St Mary’s to establish a Performing Arts Scholarship to recognise outstanding achievement in the field of dance or drama. In 2020, Year 11 student, Breanna Ireland became the inaugural recipient of the Lady Treatt Performing Arts Scholarship. Lady Treatt’s great passion for supporting girls’ education will live on in the St Mary’s girls who receive these scholarships, and we remain indebted to her for her devoted and generous support of the School.

“I have always loved to dance because you can express how you are feeling, you can escape your worries and be true to yourself. This year and next, I’ll be studying for a Cert III and IV in Dance as well as Dance ATAR, and I’m also participating in the Pre-professional Dance Program with the Dynamic Performing Arts studio. My favourite form of dance is lyrical which includes various aspects of ballet, jazz and modern dance. I love being able to tell a story through movement, interpret the music and make it my own. Over the last summer holidays, I travelled to Sydney as one of only a handful of WA girls to compete in DanceLife Unite National Dance Championships, which was an amazing experience. My ambition after school is to become a teacher of dance so I can share my love of dance with others.”

Rudra Bhatt (’15) was a recipient of the Bonny Milne Scholarship for Medicine in 2019. She is in her third year of Doctor of Medicine at UWA. “In January 2020, I volunteered at the Indian Institute of Mother and Child in Kolkata, travelling to rural treatment centres to see hundreds of patients a day. Thanks to the Bonny Milne Scholarship, I was able to take extra essential medical supplies and equipment which had a profound impact on the lives of many in rural Kolkata. I left India so inspired, not only having improved my medical skills, but with a stronger drive to continue contributing to the community in every way possible in the future.” Rudra is pictured with her patient, Surina.

BISHOP RILEY BEQUEST SOCIETY

Lynne Thomson Overseas Scholar

Guests at the 2019 Bishop Riley Bequest Society Dinner were treated to an exclusive viewing of the Senior School Art Exhibition, followed by dinner with Mrs Tudball. Catherine Shepherd, 2019 Art Captain, shared her experience of visual arts at St Mary’s and her aspirations to pursue a career in costume design. This special annual event provided an opportunity for Mrs Tudball to recognise and thank those who have chosen to or intend to leave a gift to St Mary’s in their will.

In 2019, Ruth Young (’03) was the inaugural recipient of the Lynne Thomson Overseas Study Scholarship. Funded by the Foundation, the award was established in recognition of Mrs Thomson’s 21 years as Principal of St Mary’s, and her love of two of life’s offerings – education and travel.

Every bequest of every size makes a difference at St Mary’s. If you have made a gift to St Mary’s in your will or would like to find out more about making a bequest or joining the Society, please contact Linzey Allinson, Director of Philanthropy, on (08) 9341 9120.

After completing two Bachelor degrees and a Masters in Health Policy, Planning and Financing at the London School of Economics and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Ruth is now studying for a doctorate in International Health (Health Systems) at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the USA. Her dissertation work is based in Rakai, Uganda, where she hopes to travel later this year to carry out a presentation on the distribution of internationally trained medical graduates in southern Africa.

MEMBERS OF THE BISHOP RILEY BEQUEST SOCIETY

Thank you to the members of the Bishop Riley Society who have indicated their intention to make a bequest to St Mary’s in their will.

“I’m committed to generating policyrelevant research that will improve the lives of marginalised groups at risk of poorer health outcomes. Looking ahead, I hope to take on a leadership role within a research organisation and have the privilege of mentoring other women through the often male-dominated academic space.”

Holly Isaacson was the 2019 recipient of the Kerensa Allason All-round Contribution to Music Award, which was established in 2017 thanks to Kerensa’s (’89) bequest to St Mary’s.

Our sincere thanks to you all for your generosity and support for our vision to be a leader and innovator in the education of girls and provide the very best learning environment for the girls today and into the future.

DONOR STORY

STEVE AND SUKI MOLLOY

Steve and Suki have supported the Scholarship Fund over the last five years. Their daughter, Kira, graduated in 2017. “In the words of Kathy Calvin (former President and CEO of the United Nations Foundation), “Giving is not just about making donations. It is about making a difference.” Our daughter, Kira, thrived at St Mary’s, blossoming into a wellrounded, kind individual and achieving fantastic academic results. If our gift can contribute to making this difference for another girl who has the potential to succeed, then we are only too happy to donate. Remember that the St Mary’s Foundation is a deductible gift recipient (sorry, couldn’t help mentioning this, being a tax consultant), so feel free to give twice as much!”

My two daughters have also completed their schooling at St Mary’s and I’ve been so impressed with the wonderful all-round education they received.
