A Message from the Chair of the Board

n a family trip last summer, our family visited the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. If you ever have the chance, you should make a point of spending the day there. What does this have to do with our school? One of the American Indian artifacts on display is a type of calendar on a tanned animal hide where some of the Plains Indians would draw one symbol or image to represent the year just passed. With graduation and the end of our school year only a few short weeks away, I would be hard pressed to choose one symbol for our school year here at St. Mark’s. The theme would be easy, but not having the artistic gifts of Mrs. B, I would struggle to find some way of expressing the concept of GROWTH pictorially.

Growth expressed on a large scale is the soon to be completed Lori Schiavone Commons. This large‐scale project of the We Are One campaign is absolutely and undeniably fantastic. What was once only a dream, has over a few short months turned into a beautiful and spacious, light‐ filled gift that will enrich the lives of our students for generations to come.

Growth has been in the expansion of the Daily’s Ortega River Run to include a street fair, which not only showed off our new green and other campus additions beautifully, but also entertained the thousands of people who came for the race.

As one of our largest fundraising events, we rely on the efforts of so many volunteers to make this icon of the Jacksonville running scene calendar and our school and neighborhood calendars such an outstanding success. Truly, this event would not be possible without our

volunteers and sponsors.

Growth is in the progress the school has made in being an “Outstanding School.”

Periodically, the school is evaluated by numerous organizations, the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS), being one of the most extensive. Recently, an FCIS evaluation team was on campus and we received a superb review. It is a just reward for all of the hard work our faculty and staff put into giving our students the best education possible.

Growth has occurred since yesterday; it seems our sixth graders were just in ELP. How is it possible that they will soon cease to be our students and become our alumni? Not only have they outgrown the diapers they had in ELP, but an innumerable number of uniforms as well. But more than just physical growth, mental, and most importantly of all, their spiritual growth, has made them ready to launch onto Jacksonville and the world beyond.

I actually think I have the image for this year.

It is one that will symbolize the incredible growth that we have experienced over the last months, this issue of the Lion’s Tale. As we prepare to incise our image of growth on to another year, my prayer is that our school, its faculty and staff, its classrooms and students, its parents and friends, and its beautiful green spaces may continue to be a blessing to all who come here. Fear not friends, God’s light is shining bright at St. Mark’s.

Messages From the Head of School & Rector Dear Families and Friends,

I greet you during this Easter season with hope and joy. Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

As I write this letter to you, my heart calls me to remember my good friend and colleague, Dale Regan. On March 6, we heard with unspeakable disbelief and horror the unfolding of events at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville as we learned of Dale’s murder by an unhappy employee and his subsequent suicide. We are still reeling from this senseless tragedy, and I know most especially Dale’s family and the community at ESJ continues to be in deep pain and will never be the same.

I told our students in Chapel the next morning, “as sad and as dark are the days we walk through, we know for certain our Lord knows our pain, and He walks with us.” For those of us who knew Dale’s joy of living and fun loving spirit, we know she is now “dancing with Jesus.”

If you were able to attend Dale’s memorial service on Friday, March 9, you know that it was a testimony to a great lady and a life well lived. It was also a testimony to Episcopal schools and to the loving and supportive community we are a part of. Priests and heads of school from all over our Diocese and state were present to serve and support. The love and tenderness, as well as the presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable.

Surely, Our Students are Learning English with Shurley English

S

t. Mark’s has adopted a new English and grammar curriculum in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. After researching the programs available and visiting schools using these programs, teachers along with the Assistant Head of School recommended the adoption of Shurley English.

“As soon as we saw this program in action at another school, we knew this is what St. Mark’s students should be learning,” said Maria Shelor, fourth grade teacher. “The program is challenging, and we are seeing much growth in grammar and writing.”

The textbooks were quickly ordered and the teachers worked together to learn and plan the implementation. “We have seen quite an improvement in student writing and understanding of the English language over a few short months,” says Assistant Head of School, Karen Lee. “We’re continuing to watch the results in the upper grades and thinking about the use of this valuable

program in the lower grades. We are very energized by unique strategies of Shurley English.”

Most importantly of all, it is fun! “Jingles” are sung or chanted by students, and use rhythm, rhyme, and movement. Fun and interactive, these Jingles help students begin the writing process by teaching them the definitions for parts of speech.

“My students have been very successful with the new Shurley English curriculum,” says sixth grade teacher, Kelly Risdon. “Not only do they have fun with the Jingles that help them remember the parts of speech, they benefit from the repetition of the daily practice. All of the parts of speech and the mechanics of writing are taught together which provides constant and practical application of what is learned.”

Service

Service Update

W

e reported in the last issue on many of the service projects students were working on. Now, we are proud to share with you the results of some of their efforts, and report on the people, places, and animals who have benefited from our students’ generosity and hard work.

Sixth grade students earned over $500 selling hand made crafts at the Fall Festival to help pay their way for transportation to participate in PE class with the children at the North Florida School of Special Education. Our sixth graders have learned about the blessings and challenges of their partners, and have gained valuable lessons in patience, kindness, joy, and friendship. They experienced seven eventful visits together, one of which, the North Florida students enjoyed a rare field trip and came to St. Mark’s!

Third grade collected over

First graders held a used shoe drive in February. The result had them collecting, sorting, matching, and counting 302 pairs of adult shoes and 441 pairs of children’s shoes, for a grand total of 743 pairs of shoes! The footwear will now be donated to Soles4Souls, an organization that will help distribute the shoes all over the world. We know a school in Haiti will receive some of the shoes, and our first graders have written letters to the children there. This pen pal program, along with lessons about Haiti and its culture, makes this service tangible to our students.

Collected over 1,000 items to donate to the Jacksonville Humane Society. They collected and sorted t-shirts, towels, toys, leashes, and made toys out of old socks. A representative from the Humane Society is coming in April to speak to the classes.

After School Enrichments

This is What We Do After School!

Beginner tennis teaches basic techniques, but it also develops personal perseverance and builds partnership skills

S

t Mark’s students enjoy a diverse menu of after school activities that encourage personal achievement and stimulate creative expression. The Director of Extended Day, Angela Bast, researches interests and utilizes community resources to put together classes for all ages.

Continuing the nurturing environment provided during the school day, classes are taught by St. Mark’s faculty and other specialized personnel who have completed the Safeguarding God’s Children class.

Especially wonderful for working parents, these courses give children the opportunity to participate in specialized classes that meet their interests, without the need to drive across town.

Pre‐kindergarten students who stay in the afternoons enjoy a variety of the opportunities as part of the Extended Day Program. Building on the foreign language instruction they receive in the school day (Spanish), these students are also exposed to Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture, from the school’s Chinese teacher. These three and four year old students also enjoy an extra music class with the school’s music teacher, and they participated in a six‐week long soccer clinic with Soccer Shots, a local organization. Pre‐K students are also able to take ballet and tap from Village Dance, and are escorted to and from class by extended day teachers.

After school enrichments for older students in kindergarten through sixth grade offer some traditional favorites such as Drama Club, Flag Football, crafts and cooking, and after school academic help, as well as the following new courses in sports, art, language, and music.

Chinese enrichment classes, led by St. Mark’s Chinese Teacher, Elizabeth Hardage, have heightened global awareness by celebrating the Chinese New Year and exploring China’s

5,000 year history.

Guitar and percussion classes are encouraging students to create music and are led by teachers from The Ronan School of Music. Students have performed during a Friday chapel and have accompanied the Chapel in the Park services.

Twenty students in second through sixth grade are St. Mark’s Church Choirsters, (a free opportunity), and practice every Tuesday and perform two Sundays a month. Led by the Church’s Director of Music, Mr. James Holyer, these students also receive free piano lessons!

A beginner tennis class for kindergarten through third graders is led by a former Timuquana Country Club tennis pro. Students who participate are not only building physical skills but developing patience, teamwork, and perseverance.

KidzArt, a North Florida resource that specializes in enhancing the art experience for children, has led classes in cartooning and the visual arts.

Lego building is popular for all ages! A robotics course is offered for older children to encourage mechanical thinking, and a building class is available for younger students to boost imagination and creativity.

Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Daisies have very active troops at St. Mark’s and are also inclusive of Church and neighborhood families. This has given students the opportunities to meet children outside of their school community.

Sign ups for after school enrichments occur several times each school year. Classes are typically offered around six weeks at a time.

Many of the popular offerings are a part of the Summer Enrichment Camp to be held July 30 ‐ August 3.

We Are One

W

Major Construction Projects Almost Complete!

e are proud to announce the completion of four major construction projects on the St. Mark's campus.

Funded through the We Are One capital campaign, more than $5 million was successfully raised to pay for the projects. George Egan, Co‐Chair of We Are One, commented, “The success of this campaign reflects both the incredible generosity of the St. Mark’s community and how each of these projects enhances and furthers the mission of Christ at St. Mark’s.” The four projects include the expansion and renovation of the Church’s Chapel, the construction of a new multi‐use Commons building for the Day School, the transformation of the asphalt space between the Church and Day School into a Green to unite the campuses, and the addition of paved parking around the Church.

Day school students have eagerly watched the construction of The Lori Schiavone Commons, a 10,000 square foot multi‐purpose building all school year. It was blessed at a ceremony on January 22, and was dedicated on April 22. The building features a full scale performance stage with professional lighting and sound, a gymnasium with sport flooring, and a commercial kitchen.

Cathy Hardage, Head of School, says “Because of the generous contributions and the overall support of the community, this amazing new building will allow for nutritious meals for students, top‐ notch theatrical and musical performances, and an indoor space for physical education lessons.”

purpose building began. Their daughter, Chloe Schiavone, is currently in the fourth grade.

According to Dr. Schiavone, "Chloe started school at St. Mark's when she was just one year old. Lori absolutely loved the school and everything it stood for ‐ top academics, character building, the opportunity for creativity, and the amazing faculty. We knew she would want to bring the facilities up to the same par as the teachers and education."

Also almost complete is the Baker Green and the McRae‐Winston Chapel. The Baker Green replaces asphalt parking with an expansive open green space, 7,400 square feet of covered walkways connecting Church and School, and drop‐off pavilions. The renovation and expansion of the McRae‐Winston Chapel provides increased seating, the addition of a vaulted ceiling that echoes the architectural themes of the main sanctuary, and the addition of new and renovated stain glass windows.

We raised $65,000 for our school!

T

he 34th Daily’s Ortega River Run was held on a beautiful Saturday, February 25. Over 1,500 runners and walkers participated in the 1‐Mile Fun Run and the 5‐Mile race! The new Green provided a spectacular venue for 33 sponsor booths at the street fair. A kids’ zone kept families busy after the Fun Run with activities like tennis, gymnastics, face painting, pottery painting, a bounce house, and of course, ice cream! We thank all the sponsors and volunteers it took to make this event so successful.

Many St. Mark’s students participate in both of the runs, and by doing so experience both a sense of pride in their school, and the joy of personal achievement. Several pre‐k and kindergarten classes ran in the Fun Run, proving that anyone can run! We also congratulate the students who placed in the 1‐Mile and 5‐Mile races, including a pair of fourth grade boys (pictured left) who were so determined to run together, they now share the award for 3rd place for their age group, because they recorded the exact same time by crossing both the start and finish lines exactly together.

We Welcome Brad Jessen as the New St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School Director of Development

We are pleased to announce Mr. Brad Jessen, from Colorado Academy in Denver, Colorado, has accepted the position of the Director of Development at St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School. Brad embraces the mission of St. Mark’s, and he and his family will be moving to Jacksonville in June to begin his tenure with St. Mark’s in July 2012.

Brad has served on the Advancement Team at Colorado Academy since 2006. He has been the Director of the Annual Campaign and has been very successful in increasing it over the last five years. Prior to coming to Colorado Academy, Brad worked for Regis University in Denver in Annual Support Programs. He also served as the Annual Giving Director at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Brad graduated from Valparaiso University with a B.A. degree in communications and history. He was the Student Body President while at Valparaiso University. Brad holds a masters degree in nonprofit management from Regis University in Denver.

Special Days for Students Support St. Mark’s Programs

S

everal students had the opportunity to have special experiences at school, by participating in special days with teachers, staff, and administration. As auction items at the fall fundraiser, these events help to continue funding the top‐notch programs of the school as well as to provide professional development for faculty.

Marketing Campaign Promotes Awareness and Enrollment Recent marketing efforts have promoted St. Mark’s as an “OUTSTANDING” school across Jacksonville, Orange Park, and Fleming Island. A series of three direct mail postcards reached out to families with children age 0‐11 in 15 area zip codes.

Coordinated print ads have also appeared in the local Resident Community News. The cards featured a QR code to watch the school’s promotional video and browse the website from any smart device, and encouraged attendance at admissions open houses.

Around Campus

Chinese New Year Celebration

Expanding their knowledge as citizens of the world, we celebrated the Chinese New Year in January. Chinese teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Hardage, exposed our students to the traditions and history of this rich culture. Enthusiastic students performed at a school‐wide celebration, singing Chinese songs and reciting facts and stories. Even the Pre‐K II Extended Day Program students gave a demonstration of what they learned in their Chinese lessons. As symbol of good luck for the New Year ‐ each student received an orange at the end of the celebration.

Blessed by an Awesome Live Performance!

Chapel services aren’t just something we do . . . at St. Mark’s, chapel services are who we are! Nothing demonstrated this more than when Austin Adamec, a Nashville recording artist and Jacksonville native, performed during a Friday chapel. He performed his hit song “Over All” for students, teachers, and parents in attendance. The students thought he ROCKED and inspiration was evident as everyone sang and danced to his Christian message. His CD, “My Only Answer,” is available at the St. Mark’s Church Bookstore and on his website, www.austinadamec.com.

1st & 4th Grades are All About Jazz Think children are only into the top 40 hits? Give them a nurturing environment to feel free to express themselves and you’ll see they appreciate all types of music. First and fourth grades preformed hits from the Jazz era in their musical, All About Jazz. This program exposed students to Ragtime, Blues, Big Band, and Swing. Each child showed determination and excellence as they wowed the crowd with their vocal and dance skills.

41 St. Mark’s Student’s Artwork Published in National Art Book Congratulations to Mrs. Kathy Betancourt, our art teacher, for stimulating outstanding artistic creativity in our students. In the fall of she entered several students’ art in a national competition. Typically, 25% of the art submitted from each school is accepted, but ALL 41 pieces submitted from our school were accepted! We are so very proud of our artists and the work they have accomplished this year. The winners were published in a hardcover book, “Celebrating Art.”

Fifth Grader Wins Spelling Bee It took sixteen rounds of spelling to narrow down the spirited contestants. Twenty fifth and sixth graders committed themselves and studied hard to be a part of the annual bee. Sixth grader Emilyn R. (pictur ed left), was the runner up, and fifth grader, Will K. (picture d right), won the Bee with the championship word, “SYRINGE.” We are proud of all our students who competed at such a high caliber!

Visiting Author Day ‐ Mr. Harper

Providing role models encourages personal achievement in students. Author and illustrator, Lee Harper, imparted inspiration to our students on Visiting Author Day. As an author and illustrator of several popular children’s books, he spoke to our students about what inspires his drawings, and the steps he took to become published. To further stimulate their creativity, every child used a clipboard and pencils or crayons to draw along with him, learning the skills to draw a turkey, one of the characters from his books.

Chapel in the Park Instilling Christian values doesn’t only have to happen inside a church. We are blessed to have beautiful Stockton Park across the street from our school, and we take full advantage of it! On many Fridays throughout the school year, chapel is held there overlooking the St. Johns River. It is a delightful way to glorify God in His creation!

Fifth graders concluded their reading of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, by having a “Mrs. Frisby Day.” They interpreted the story by decorating their classroom, making costumes, and filming both an epilogue and a “squeakeal” to the book. The day ended with a challenging scavenger hunt which sent these rats running around campus!

Our two year old students have been busy learning their colors this year. Each week has been devoted to a color, with teachers wearing that color to school, students eating colorful snacks, and so much more.

In celebration of all their hard work, students made rainbow streamers with all the colors and paraded around the school’s campus to show off their smarts!

"I love seeing them succeed and knowing that I am empowering them for the future," says fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Maria Shelor. Her teaching style ‐ full of enthusiasm ‐ causes students to love learning. "She's one of the nicest people I've ever met," said her student Riley Cozart. He has had Mrs. Shelor as a teacher twice, and nominated her for the TV News’ Teacher of the Week segment.

Mrs. Shelor is the FIFTH teacher from St. Mark’s to be recognized for this honor in three years!

Student Wins ANOTHER Design Contest!

Congratulations to Kevin M , who received 2nd Place in the Regional Poison Prevention Week 2012 Poster Contest. 231 posters were submitted in three age categories. He was honored in a local ceremony on March 1. His poster is now moving on to the Poison Prevention Week Council in Alexandria, VA, to compete in the nationwide poster contest.

Last year, Kevin designed a ketchup bottle that placed highly in the Heinz Ketchup design contest. We’re so proud of his passion and dedication to designing this form of art!

Student Swimmers Make Double the Effort First graders (and twin brothers), Drew (left) and Will (right) H., swim for the Yates YMCA Flyers. They participated in States in Orlando in the eight and under age group, and placed third and fourth in state! They competed in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, fly, and relay. The boys practice for two hours a day, four times a week. Their commitment and effort is being rewarded!

Student Featured in National Swimming Magazine Sixth Grader, Katherine B, was featured in a recent issue of USA Swimming Splash Magazine. Her profile represented the southern region of the swim kids section. She broke the city record for the 50 breaststroke with a 34.14 last summer. In February, she swam at The Florida Age Group Championships held in Sarasota. Her 400 Medley Relay team won first place in the state and placed 17th overall in the country!

What are some of the memories you have from being a student at St. Mark's?

I was part of the inaugural class when St. Mark's started its school program way those many years ago. My mother, Sally Evans, was one of the trustees. It was a great experience from the start. I remember playing kickball across the street at Stockton Park. ‐ Tucker Evans

What has changed the most over the years?

The campus. Our classes were held in the existing St. Mark's Church buildings. Rev. Barnum McCarty and his family lived in the current Admissions Building and it was a very close knit community. Most of us rode our bikes to school. ‐ Jennifer Hanigan

What has stayed the same?

The library still looks and smells the same! And, of course, the huge live oak tree to the side of Berg Field that I sat under after many fun games of four square. I rested on its knotty roots when I was a child, and both of my boys have played under it as well. ‐ Carol Chafin

Chapel is almost exactly the same. Some of the songs are different and the church has been remodeled, but it my most consistent memory. The excellence of the teachers and staff are the same. The reason that I sent my children to St. Mark's is because of the loving and caring environment that still exists today and I truly believe is unique to St. Mark's ‐ Jennifer Hanigan

What made you decide to come back to St. Mark’s for your children?

My husband and I have grown up with St. Mark's and plan on our children doing the same. The school and church have consistently been part of our lives and they have shared in our most momentous occasions. You know you have a special school when many of your teachers will also be your children's teachers. We have also been impressed with the focus St. Mark's has on current research in child development and on continuing education for faculty members. It is the combination of community and up‐to‐date best practices in early childhood development that makes St. Mark's the right fit for our children. ‐ Caroline Graham

1989 Chrissy Lane Boozer and husband, William, are excited to announce they are expecting their first child in September. Chrissy has been an assistant teacher, mostly in pre‐kindergarten, at St. Mark’s for nine years.

Alumni Siblings Gaining a World of Knowledge Emily Sirbaugh, '06, currently a junior at Westminster School in Simsbury, CT, is actively involved in international relations and volunteerism. She traveled to Yale and Boston Universities this past winter as a delegate for Romania and Iran in the New England High School Model U.N. program.

Last summer, she and her brother, Teddy '10, volunteered in an orphanage in Jaipur, India, and this summer between working as a lifeguard at Florida Yacht Club, Emily will volunteer with villagers and schools around Chiang Mai, Thailand, while Teddy will provide service in the Bahia Ballena community of Costa Rica.

Matthew Kwartler has been named one of Jacksonville’s Top 40 Under 40 by the Jacksonville Business Journal. He is a Private Wealth Management Client Advisor for SunTrust Bank.

Matthew and his wife, Johanna, have a son, Hudson, and are expecting their second child, a girl, in April.

Camille "Bunny" Middleton, and her husband, John, welcomed their first child, Henry Seaborn Middleton, on Tuesday, March 6. He was 7 pounds, 2 ounces, and measured 20 inches. Camille is an Account Supervisor at the Dalton Agency ; John is a VP at Just Multifamily Apartment Asset Advisors. They live in Avondale and are looking forward to sending Henry to SMEDS for the ELP I program in August of next year!

lumni Notes Jennifer Carter Lyles and husband, Bron, welcomed a son, Solomon Andrew Lyles, on March 21, 2012.

He weighed 8 lbs 12 oz. Big sisters Savanna and Julia adore him!

Solomon's aunt is Jessica Carter O'Brien '96, and his uncles are Grady Carter '93, and Jassen Carter '00.

Andy Kidd, currently Episcopal School of Jacksonville’s Director of Advancement, will serve as Episcopal’s next Director of Athletics! Andy has been a part of athletics at Episcopal since he wore Eagle uniforms for three different sports. Andy then went on to play soccer at Furman University, and returned to Episcopal to coach football and soccer. He will inherit an athletic program that fields more than 55 sports teams, supported by more than 100 coaches. He also serves on the St. Mark’s Board of Trustees and has two daughters, Maggie, in Pre‐K I, and Emily, who will be in ELP next year.

1997 Josh Bryan will graduate with an MBA from UNC Chapel Hill in May and will be starting his own company. He is married to Annie (Adams) who attended St. Mark’s for first grade. Josh is also an alum of Episcopal and Washington and Lee University. He is pictured here with his fourth grade niece, Klare Bryan, during a recent visit to campus!

2006 August Jonas is playing golf at the US Naval Academy. He did a post graduation year at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania last year. He will finish his plebe year in May 2012.

2005 Alex Mahoney was the Technical Director for Douglas Anderson School of the Arts’ Extrava‐ ganza.

2006 James Plyler, a senior at Episcopal, has created a documenterview on fellow Episcopal student, Carter Matthews’ music.

Ralston Brooke, a senior at Bolles, completed the prestigious Joe Berg Seminar series in January.

Participants are nominated by their high schools in the fall of their sophomore year, based upon their GPA and demonstrated interest in enrichment. The nominees then sit for a rigorous examination in either the sciences or humanities.

About 50 students from approximately 15 public 2004 and private Jacksonville high schools are admitted Chandler Bennett, into the program each year. a 2010 graduate

of Episcopal, and Darby Dame, a senior at Episcopal, received the now a sophomore Episcopal School of Jacksonville Varsity Cross at Georgetown Country Coach’s Award.

University Mary Dudley Lee, a senior at majoring in Episcopal, was selected as the Biology, minoring Junior Weekend Advisor for in Arabic, will spend two months this summer studying New Beginnings #1 in the Arabic at the Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman. She has Diocese of Florida. The Junior been awarded a Project GO Scholarship to participate in Weekend Advisor is the the 2012 Arabic Summer Language Intensive Program in “Rector” for New Beginnings, Amman, Jordan hosted by California State University, San a Diocesan‐wide middle Bernardino. Project GO (Global Officers) is a Department of school retreat similar to Defense initiative aimed at improving the language skills, Happening and Cursillo. Mary Dudley oversaw a regional expertise, and intercultural communication skills team of 20 high schoolers, as well as 30 6th‐8th of future military officers. The program is available to graders who attended as candidates. New ROTC students. Competition for the CSUSB Project GO Beginnings #1 was held March 23‐25 at Epworth scholarships was extremely high this year with only 1 in 5 by the Sea. ROTC applicants receiving the awards.

John Jonas, a senior at Bolles, was named to the First Team for the 2011 Florida Times Union All‐ First Coast team for Boys’ Golf. He will be attending Louisiana State University to play golf in the fall.

2007 Emily Leeser, a junior at Episcopal, has been accepted into the New York Ballet. She will be moving to New York City this summer to dance with the company and attend one of the top institutes for dance.

Alex Tyre was named to the Third Team for the 2011 Florida Times Union All‐First Coast team for Boys’ Swimming and Diving.

2008 Kailon Thompson, a sophomore a Bolles, participated in the Florida Statewide Chinese competition held in February in Fort Lauderdale.

She received excellent results for her individual contribution.

Michael Pentaleri, a sophomore at Bolles, rowed an aggressive race to capture first place overall in the Men's HS Lightweight Novice event at the 2012 Southern Sprints Indoor Rowing Championship.

Bender Middlekauff received third place for Physics at the Bolles Upper School Science Fair in December.

Thomas Chafin, a sophomore at Episcopal, was selected as a Joe Berg Scholar and will participate in 28 evening seminars during the next two years. He also was an American Host for a French exchange student in February.

2009 Matthew Pentaleri, a freshman at Bolles, received the Bronze Apple Award for his essay in the Eighth National Chinese Essay Contest hosted by the Chinese Language Association of Secondary‐Elementary Schools (CLASS). While in previous years, students were allowed to submit typed essays, this year’s essays had to be handwritten, requiring students to produce the appropriate Chinese characters themselves.

2010 Lauren Witkovich, Kaiden Ketchum, and Amanda Thompson (‘11), all middle school students at Episcopal, participated in the Florida Junior Thespians State Festival in February. Lauren received a “Superior” rating for her solo singing performance.

Jack McGee, ‘08, is a sophomore at Episcopal School of Jacksonville and is spending the spring semester as an exchange student in China.

Following two summer experiences with a teen travel program, Rustic Pathways, once to New Zealand and once to Thailand, Jack knew he wanted to attend school immersed in another culture. He has taken Chinese at ESJ for several years, and even though Episcopal has not ever had an exchange program with China, Jack went through a very rigorous essay and interview process with the Ayusa program to become a student in China. He attends an international school where all his classes are in Mandarin Chinese except English class. Jack has really enjoyed his experience so far and has joined the Badminton and Ping Pong teams! He is pictured above in Tiananmen Square.

Jack stays in touch with family, friends, and ESJ Chinese classmates via Skype.
