PRINCIPALS COMMENT

A

gain we come to the end of another school year and this magazinegives us the opportunity to reflecton the many and varied activitiesand high points of 1994at St Margaret'sCollege. It has indeed been an excitingyear. The year opened for the boarders with extensionsto KilburnHouse and extensionsto our Junior Departmentfor younger children. The boarding house extensions enabled us to increase the boarding roll to 145 and now satisfiesan increasingdemand for boarding school places. Extensionto Primary Schoolclassroomsallowed us to accommodatethe childrenin an environmentthat enabled more activitiesto take place within the classroomand more flexibilityof classroomorganisation. We also welcomed a number of new staffin our PrimaryDepartment, in Humanitiesand Physical Educationdepartment as well as in Mathematics,Art and Dramaand the boardingschool. New staff alwaysbring new ideas and new challengesto all of us. It has been good to also get to know this multitalented group. Amongstthe high points for 1994 have no doubt been the number of trips in which the girls have participated. A month long trip to Japan last summer holidaysfor students of Japanese was most successfulas was the long awaited Classical Studiestour to Greece and Italyfor senior students of Art Historyand Classics. The wonderful album of photographs taken and beautifully presented by Mrs Elworthy, shows the varietyand breadth of the girls' experience. As well as this, our ChamberChoir had a most successfultour to Adelaidewhere they not only participatedin the centennial celebrationsof our sisterschool there but also enjoyed such activi4

ties as singingfor the LordMayor and singingEvensongin the AdelaideCathedral. Earlyin the second term, our Future ProblemSolvinggroup accompanied by Mrs ChrisWyeth, left for Ann Arbor,Michigan,to successfully participatein InternationalFinalsof Future ProblemSolving. This term, seven of our Future Problem Solvingteams have travelledto Aucklandwhere they have participated in the NationalFinals. All in all, the opportunitiesoffered for the girlsthis year have been tremendous. The firstArts Week was also a great successwith our own inhouse productionof 'Ladders'and opportunitiesfor parents and studentsto participatein a varietyof workshops and in a host of activities. DuringArts Week the school really 'buzzed' and it was good to see our culturallife taking a higher profile. We hope that such a week will be an annual feature of our second term. Similarlythe second term also brought us a very happy 'House Day' where the girls exhibitedtheir tremendoustalent in drama and their real enthusiasmfor House sports. Those of you who read our weekly newsletterswill be consciousof the successthat the girls have in all fields of endeavour;academic, culturaland sporting.Particular successesthis year have been in skiingwhere we won the Canterbury and the South Island Secondary Schools'SkiingChampionships, Equestrianwhere we won the CantetburyIntersecondarySchools' One Day Eventfor the second year in a row, and Hockeywhere our PremiereGrade team drew with Girls'High to take the Christchurch SecondarySchoolstitle. When one considersthat St Margaret'sis a very smallschool, the range of activities

which the girls have access to and their success, shows not only the girls' talent but the high level of commitmentfrom staff and from parents who make it possible for the girlsto be involvedin whatever they want to undertake. Whilethe success of the school is often measured by its academic, culturaland sporting successesand by the range of activitiesit offers, the school is much more than that. It must be a place where there is a sense of communitynurtured by a common goal. There must be the opportunityto develop one's potentialto respect one's self and show respect to one another. It should be a place where life is cherished, nurtured and celebrated and a place where young people are enabled to grow to express their uniqueness but to still understand that to live life successfullyone must learn unselfishness, consideration, honesty and reliability. These are the qualitiesthat we are endeavouring to nurture in this College. Becausewe are working with young people, sometimesthere are failuresbut together we are striving to make these dreams a realityas our young women emerge from school into the world of the 21st Century. MayI take this opportunity of thankingthe Chairmanof the Board, Mrs Pieter Stewart, and all Board members, staff, the parent body and the students for making 1994a good year for St Margaret's College.

994 has been the 'Yearof the Family'for the world at large but the 'Yearof the Committee'for St Margaret'sStaff. We have all discoveredourselvesto be members of at least one committeeand some have strayed into several • where they have been made very welcome and given lots of demanding assignments. Add to this an increasinglevel of professional development courses, conferences and meetings and you can see that we are enthusiasticallyanticipating the year 2000 and beyond. Ten new teachersjoined us and also some new officestaff;most visibleto girls and parents are Miss Mandi Dicksonon the front desk and Mrs SandraO'Brienin the near office. They replaced MrsMarie Burgesswho left in July and Mrs NatalieRitchiewho retired from St Margaret'sat the end of Term 2. We were really sorry to lose these charming, humorous and hardworkingadministrativestaff but our new staff have adjusted quickly to life at St Margaret's. When MissFay Mangosleft at the end of last year and MissFiona Reeveswent on leave it provided an opportunityto divide the roles of responsibilityfor PhysicalEducation and sport, two very demanding jobs

both of which had been filledby MissMangos. MissSharynHeberley was appointed as Head of Physical Educationand MissChrisArthur as Head of Sport. Two new staff members appointed to the Humanitiesdepartment have helped redress the balance of the sexes in the staffroom. Mr Grant Belcher('the big one') teaches Geography and SocialStudiesand MrJohn Kerr ('the little one') Historyand SocialStudies. Not a pair but a trio of new faces have occupied the Junior School, Mrs Roz Spiers,MrsCarolynStuart and MissJackie Riachare always calm, friendly, competent and ready to help. And another trio; MrsMichelle Brennan who can do everything, the pottery person Mrs Kaye Curgenvenand MsJuliet Neill(with a brother no-one has ever heard of) bring lots of variety, fun and creativityto the staffroom. We find it all invigorating. PREFECTS'REPORT

W

hen anyone asks me exactly what being Head Prefect involves,I struggleto come up with an adequate answer. For me this year has been an interestingand rewardingyear, but at times a vety difficultand demanding year. From givingimpromptu speeches and gruesome detentionsto enjoyinglavish breakfastsat Noah's Hotel it has been above anythingelse a constantchallengeboth for me and St Margaret's. It has been a chance for me to put somethingback into St Margaret's after all the years of willinglytaking so much out of it. The school's firstever musical overseastrip to Adelaidein Easter this year was a personal highlight. In the last couple of years there has been a real effortto increasethe recognitionof arts within the school. This trip to Adelaide, combinedwith the Arts Week held later in the year, was a real milestone and I hope it marks the beginningof much more to come. There are numerous people to whom I owe my thanks. Thank you firstto the seventh form for their enduring humour, their endless quantityof "quality''advice and their unfailingabilityto produce more challenges- ensuringI never had the chance to get bored! I am also vety gratefulto the prefects;a diverse,multi-talented group whose help and support were much appreciated. This year is now MissWysocki's third year at St Margaret'sand after the many changes of 1993,has been a more settledyear with the only major change havingbeen the introductionof the new uniform- a topic of much "intellectualdebate". It is only as we near the end of our time at St Margaret'sthat we begin to appreciatethe time,.energy and 8

money that has been investedin our educationboth by our parents and by the staff. To the staff: we greatlyappreciate your commitment, your incredible patience and your attentionto detail, but perhaps even more importantlywe are vety gratefulfor the fact that we have alwaysbeen treated as individualsand also respectedas such. As we emerge from St Margaret's into the wider world we are fortunate for the solid groundingour educationhere has provided us with. Duringour time here we have been encouraged to develop a sense of who we are and to retain our individuality. In the five years since third form we have all en-

countered numerous challenges, been exposed to a wide varietyof experiencesand made a lot of good and long lastingfriendships. Togetherwe have laughed a lot, worried a lot, and sometimeseven studied a lot!! All in all our time at St Margaret's has been an experience of a lifetime, one none of us could ever forget! BOARDINGHOUSE REPORT& PREFECTS

O

ne word that I would use to describethe past year as Head of House would be that it has been a CHALLENGE. With a high spirited, independently minded fifthform that was almost double the size of any other form, life in the BoardingHouse could never have been called dull! There were Seniorsexpressing authorityin both houses this year due to the additionof 25 more rooms in Kilburnwhich also raised the number of boarders to 145. This year, probablywith a sigh of relief, there was no picnic at the beginningof the year due to a lack of interestwhich stemmed from past experiences! MrsBeny leftat the end of the fust term and so we say a veiybig "thank you"to her and wish her good luckin whatevershe choosesto do next, and I alsowelcomeMrsEaster, her husbandTonyand theirdaughter Katy, and hope theyenjoytheirnew environmentas much as the third formersseem to have! We renovated the old haunted music room into a BoardersGames Room. Pool Tournamentsand the amount of "fizz"that Boardershave

has reached a maximum.Keep up the practiceBoarders! I would liketo thank MrsGoodall, MrsZygadlo,MrsEaster,MrsAnsell and alsoMrsCuniefor all theirhelp, guidanceand patiencethey have givenme, even if theywere not alwaysdone withouta bit of a push. PTA REPORT

T

his year has been another busy year for the PTA committee, working "behind the scene" to provide refreshments at social functions, as well as additional resources for the school. At the Annual Meeting of the PTA in March 1994, several committee members did not seek re-election. I thank Helen Butterfield, Kate Hartnell, Rosemary McBeath, Kathy Pearse, Martha Tripp, John Savill, Lyall Simpson, and Pieter Stewart for their time, talents and energy. At the February meeting, 1994, Miss Wysocki presented the PTA Committee with a "wish list" of items for the school totalling $26,700. It was resolved at the meeting that the PTA Committee give up to $20,000 to enable the school to purchase items on the list. Items which the school has purchased include: computer and software for resource reading, Television/Video for the Art department, Television monitor and Video Camera for the Biology microscope, Television/Video for Health program, Gas stove for Food Technology, sports equipment, slide projector for Art History and Classics, tape deck for the Drama Department, and a Public Address system.

Corbans Wine evening was enjoyed by 40 parents. Our Cocktail Party to be held on Wednesday 9 November, 1994 will not be a fund raising event. It will be a formal social occasion as the PTA Committee hope that by keeping the price moderate there will be full support from parents, staff, Trust Board members, and Old Girls. Canterbury Salads which was originally compiled by the PTA in 1990 has been reprinted. Copies are available for $10 from any PTA Committee member or at the school office. These recipe books proved very popular when they were first printed, and would make a very attractive, reasonably priced gift. A special vote of thanks must go to Glenys Kearns, Convenor of the Social Committee, and her small band of helpers who have provided refreshments at numerous school functions throughout the year. Robyn Watson took over as Convenor of the Clothing Shop at the beginning of the year. Much effort has been put into clearing out old second-hand clothing to facilitate the phasing in of the new school uniform. Stocks of the old uniform

will only be sold to Form 5 and upwards in 1995, Form 6 in 1996, and Form 7 in 1997. Green tracksuits are in good supply at the Clothing Shop, and have been selling well this year. The PTA Committee plan to hold a Gala Fair on Saturday, 16 March 1996, so keep that date free. Funds raised will go towards the development of computers and technology at school. To be worthwhile, a fair involves a lot of planning and hard work. We hope that everyone in the School community will work together over the next year so that the Gala will be a memorable and fruitful event.

As this is my last year of office, I wish to thank all committee members for their support over the past two years while I have been President, especially Pamela O'Brien, Secretary, and Martin Hadfield, Treasurer, who have been most willing and supportive. Finally, I would like to thank Miss Claudia Wysocki for her untiring assistance, and the College Staff for their support and co-operation.

his year S.A.D.D.hasn't had a great presence in school, and this is due to the fact that two 7th form reps have been involvedin out of school S.A.D.D.related activities. The two things that we have done in school went quite well. During the firstset of parent teacher interviewswe had a display, and a computer set up. The people who tried the computerwere quite shocked to realisehow easy it is to get over the alcohol limit. The

other event that we did in the school was to have a muftiday. STUDENTEXCHANGEREPORT

S

t Margaret's College has had a lot of involvement with student exchanges this past year. I returned from an amazing experience in Argentina last year, and have returned to school for my final Bursary year. I would like to thank the school and my friends for their support throughout the year, I couldn't have got by without it. After mid-term break the seventh form and all of St Margaret's said goodbye to Tracey Bryce - a Rotary exchange student from Canada. I know she really enjoyed her year with us and should be commended for the way she enthusiastically involved herself in so many sports for the school. Her presence is greatly missed in Tonbridge now there's no Oprah! Overseas at the moment with AFS are April McLaren and Deanna Campbell. April is in Argentina, Sante Fe and has recently had a family change and is content and happy. She has just travelled to Bari Loche, the student rage capital of Argentina and I am sure she would have loved every minute of it. Meanwhile Deanna is in Bolivia,

I would like to wish the newly selected students an enjoyable exchange, I know it is one they'll never forget, and it will change their lives forever. I hope that in the future St Margaret's girls continue to apply for exchanges as they're so worthwhile and rewarding. I wish future applicants every success.

FUTUREPROBLEM SOLVING - THEINTERNATIONAL FINALS

994provedto be a big yearfor our fourthformFutureProblem SolvingTeamas we representedNew Zealandin the International Future ProblemSolvingTeamfinals. The finals, held in Michigan,America, gave us a chanceto experiencelifein a differentcountiy, learneven more aboutFutureProblemSolvingand of coursehavefun. Duringour stay in LosAngeleswe were able to spend two days in Disneylandwhich everyonethoroughly enjoyed(especiallythe rides 'SpaceMountain'and 'Splash Mountain'). Variousother things we did in LosAngeleswere a bus tour round Hollywood,a trip to Universal Studios, swimmingand sunbathing at NewportBeach and of cornse plenty of shopping. Our next stop was Ann Arbor, Michigan. The firstthing I noticed about our stay there was how everyonewas so friendly. The calledus the 'New Zealanders'and would do anythingto trade New Zealandsouvenirs. I was also surprisedby the yummyfood on offer there as well. But the highlight for me was winning the oral presentationof our best solution.

Ann Arborwas such a beautiful,

clear, green place and the Universitywas spectacular. In the end I was very reluctantto leave as we had such a great time. Our final destinationwas New York and what a cultureshock it was. Neverhave I been in one place with so many unusual people. I found it quite sad though as there were many poor people livingon the street and this made us realise how fortunatewe reallyare.

Our three daysin NewYorkgaveus a chanceto visitmanydifferentand interestingplaces- TwinTowers(107 storieshigh),the EmpireStateBuilding, the Statueof liberty,Tiffany's, Bloomingdales and we alsohad a chanceto see a show - MissSaigon. I reallyenjoyedmy time spent with the Future ProblemSolvingteam and I recommendanyone join because of the new and wonderful experiencesyou gain. EmilyPalmer

THE NEW ST MARGARET'S WARDROBE Some Comments

by Pupils ...

T

his year St Margaret's College introduced a new uniform which consists of a navy tunic and city shorts. It's good not having to wear the same thing every day. It's great wearing shorts instead of a dress. The cardigan is very warm and so are the skivvys. In summer we can wear T shirts instead of a shirt and tie. The emblem on the blazer is easily recognised The blazer is light even on summer days. I'm really enjoying having a fresh new uniform. The new wardrobe is very comfortable and very stylish. You get comments about it everywhere you go, but the first question everyone asks is what school are you from. Overall I think it has been a great success. The new wardrobe is so stylish and ever so practical. In the morning when I'm getting dressed my choice of clothes can depend on the weather or what I have during the day. When walking in town or on the street it's nice to hear the comments from people passing by.

Modelling the new uniform are Kate Apperley, Prudence Graham and Katie Bell.

It also looks good on all shapes and sizes. All round I think it makes school so much better and lets us stand out from all the other schools. The smart but comfortable look for the new school wardrobe is a great success. Choosing what to wear is the hardest part.

The new St Margaret's uniform looks quite nice. I especially like the shorts and T shirt and I like being able to wear my traditional black Doc Martens. People hardly ever realise that I am actually wearing a St Margaret's uniform. The new uniform is wondetful I think. It's great to have a choice of different items to put on. I really like the shorts and the blouse. For summer it's really great to have a T shirt to wear. I like the new uniform but I am never recognised as belonging to St Margaret's, especially when wearing a ca~gan, skivvy, and shorts. I must admit, having a choice of what you wear makes "all looking the same" a little bit less prominent. Wearing the shorts is good because you can move easily.

The wardrobe is very neat and comfortable. The colour is very nice and when we get up in the morning it is so hard to choose what to wear. I was in the bank the other day and one old man came up to me and said "You do look smart and the uniform is so stylish".

The other seminar presentation each of us has done this year was to do with the Internationaltopic. We all had to research and prepare an assignmenton food from another country. It was interesting to learn a bit about other cultures and eating habits in other countries. A latgepercentageof the year's coursewas the entertainmentunit For this, each studenthad to choose an entertainingsituationor theme rangingfrom 'AfterTheatreDressers' to a 'FrenchPicnic.' Guestswere invitedand entertainingwas done. Each Mondayhas been spent doing the HCITBCourses- BasicTable Serviceand BasicBeverage Service Skills. These have been done well

with 100%pass rate. Both these courses will be very useful in today's workforce. Rightthroughout the year the class has been doing an in-depth study on nutrition. This study was very interestingand it was good to learn all about vitaminsand minerals which we intake every day, and learn how our bodies utilise them. It has been a very busy year for our class but we have gained a lot from the course. Mrs Baigent has always been willingto help with resources for assignmentsand studies. We have gained a lot from the course and I believe it has been a rewarding option to take. Susan ClibbornForm 6

CLASSICAL STUDIESTOUR

T

his year the St Margaret'sCollege ClassicalStudiestour finallywent ahead after all the hours of planning and fundraising. Eighteensixth and seventh form girls along with six mothers and Mrs Newmanwere lucky enough to share the experience of travellingto Greece, then on to Italy. We were away a total of 21 days. Athens was our firststop, where after seeing the Acropolisand the mighty Pathennon we were left stunned and amazed. The rest of

our time in Greece was spent visitingthe beautifulGreek Islandsof Porus, Hydra,Aegena and travelling further into the Pelophonesian Peninsulato Delphi the place where Alexander the Great consultedthe oracle before going on to conquer the PersianEmpire. Mycaene, Epidairus,Corinthand Olympia, the ancient origin of the Olympic games, were also other stops along the way. We crossed from Greece to Italyby ferry to begin the Art History section of our tour. Rome and the Vatican, especiallythe newly cleaned Sistinechapel, was a great favourite. Florence, home to the Uffizigallery, held some of the most famous art works in the world and left us in awe. Veniceand the canals was an absolute dream and an unplanned

visit to the Peggy Gugenheim Museumof ModernArt was a great break from the rigidnessof our tour. Despite being on a tour we had occasionalfree afternoonsand the markets in Florenceseemed to be the place where most people parted with their money.

The food in Italywas as we'd expected it to be - pizza, lasagne, spaghetti and their ice cream was unbelievable. Italywas a food lover's dream. Whilstin Greece however macaroni surpriseseemed to be served everywhere! Each person took from this trip special memories of the places visited, events and occasions. But we owe a great thanks to Mrs Newmanwho started the ball rollingand Mrs Elworthywho also assistedin planning. Youwere both wonderful and made this educationaltrip so successfuland rewarding.

uring the Christmasholidays earlier this year, ten of last year's fifth formJapanese students accompaniedby Mr McKelveyand Ms Reymertravelledto Japan for three and a half weeks with two Christ'sCollegeboys and a group of ten girlsand boys from Cheviot. Aftera night in Auckland,we flew to Tokyo and stayed one night in a youth hostel in Yoyogi- one of the centre suburbs of the enormous city. The next day we went to Mt Fuji,Japan's highest and most famous mountain, where we spent five days at an internationalyouth camp named the GlobalVillage. Here we mixed with 40 students from all around Japan and six Australians. On ChristmasEve we had a party where presents were exchanged, where we taught the Japanese the MaoriHaka and the song, 'Stand By Me', and where we were even visitedby a Japanese-lookingSanta Claus. Manyof us experienced our firstwhite Christmasand our first Christmasdinner of miso soup, rice, seaweed and raw fish. On Christmas day we went on an excursion to Hakine, a resort much like Queenstown, where we rode cable cars and gondolas, visitedthe thermal area, Owakidani, and numerous Buddhisttemples and Shintoshrines and took a Pirate Ferry across LakeAshino-ko. That night, our final night at Fuji,we had a dance which was enjoyed by all. On BoxingDay we said a sad farewellto our newly found friends and travelledback to Tokyo where we were met by our host families with whom we were to stay for the remainingtwo and a half weeks. The four days at CastleHillwere filledwith experiencesthat triggered all sorts of emotionalresponses - from being scared stiff and claustrophobicto being exhilarated and excited. The meal prepared on the night camping out produced strange mixturesof food and using the toilet was avoided if at all possible. SPIRITOF ADVENTURE

M

onday 21st of Aprilwas a day on which I had no idea how it would finish. It was a day where I was to board a ship with twenty other strangersand begin an unknown ten day voyage somewhere in the rough seven seas. It was going to be tough, so I fastened my lifejacket, wondering whether I would ever see the mainland again. The rough tough seven seas turned out to be the MarlboroughSounds. ver the past six years, it has been my duty, privilegeand pleasure to write about the Myers' Cup Speech Competition. This year I would like to begin by praising the ongoing enthusiasm, energy, and oratoricalskills of Charlotte Walker F7. Charlottehas competed in the grand final of this competition every year since 1989. And she has won her actual sectionno less than four times out of the six! That surely must be a record certainlyin the St Margaret'sif not the Guinness Book of Records! From those early days she has developed her public speaking skillsto a very high standard of persuasion and control. We have laughed as Charlottehas regaled us with insightsinto how Prince Charles'affairshave been proceeding. his year has been a very exciting one for the Arts at St Margaret's. 1994saw the devotionof an entire week to the Arts. MissWebby's wonderful idea "ArtAttackWeek" certainlyhelped raise the status of the arts and culturalactivitieswithin the school. The Arts Councilwas pleased to play some part in this by working behind the scenes.

It was also pleasing to see a lot of students getting involvedin various culturalactivitiesand the number of girlsawarded arts awards certainly reflectsthis. Thank you to the Arts Councilfor their determinationand wonderful, creativeideas. Unfortunatelydue to the pressure on many of the

Council'smembers,we were not able to promote the arts as much as we would have liked. Allthe best to the Arts Councilof 1995- a year which looks as though it will be a promisingone for the arts. Thank you especiallyto MrsMcKay for all her time and support during the year. Charlotte Walker

This was the first overseas trip that any St Margaret'sChoir has undertaken and hopefully not the last. We had some experienced travellersin our midst, who made the trip which was a first for some, even more enjoyable. We were on our way to help our sister school in Adelaide,St Peter's Collegiate, celebrate their centenary along with pupils from sister schools in Perth, Hobart and Canberra. The atmospherein the plane was slightlyfrenziedwhile both our debatingteamstriedto sketchour theirteam'scasesfor the next day's debates. Wewere greetedat the aitportby our hostsand whisked away off to meet our families. We were billetedwith hostswho had similarintereststo us and we found that all our hostswere diverse, multi talented, friendly, hospitablepeople. Our debating teams proved to be highly successful. The first of our teams consistingof Anna Mason, AlexandraPettit and Georgina Studholmewere narrowlybeaten by the girls of Canberra negating "That BeverleyHills90210is the wrong number". Our second team was victoriousover the home team.

Tbe mural the Choir painted for St Peter's

Angela Keams, BridgetMcListerand Diana Perry argued outstandingly "ThatBart Simpsonis more relevant than Shakespeare". We also had to produce a mural for St Peters to put up around the school. We finished this with style, under the direction of Natalie Getve. It was a colourful, interesting masterpiece. During our trip to Adelaidewe visited ClelandPark, where we saw, felt and fed kangaroos, koalas and galahs. We also went swimming and ten pin bowling with our hosts.

We were received by the Mayor of Adelaidein the luxurious rooms of the CouncilChambers. This was most enjoyableas before we sang we were given morning tea and afterwardswe were shown around. We sang evensong at St Peter's Cathedral. The Magnificantand the Nunc Dimitiswere accompanied by a solo from Prue MacDonaldwith Diana Perry on the oboe and GeorginaStudholmeon the flute. We also sang at a musical concert at the school and at two chapel setvices. This was a highly entertaining, successfultrip and I hope future chamber choirs can experience similartrips. We would like to thank MissKerr for arrangingthe Adelaidetrip and also Mrs McKay for the work she did coaching the debating teams. We hope that girls from St Peter's will be able to visit us before long.

Neverthelessthe spirit was there and we had heaps of fun. This year the athleticsports were cancelledbut I'm sure we could award ourselveswith an estimatedfirst! At House Day Kowhaians, yet again, displayedtheir brilliantculturaland musicaltalentsby performing"The Muppet Show". This was a huge successwhich resulted in a well-deservedvictory. Our sports teams played with much enthusiasmand vigourwhich gained us our overall fifthplace. A grand effortKowhai! A big thankyou goes to our Kowhaitutorsfor theircontinuous supportand encouragementAllthe best for nextyear. MANUKAHOUSEREPORT

T

his year has been pretty traditional for Manuka. We did not gain any overall wins in anything, but we had "awesome" house spirit.

The swimming sports were the highlight of our success this year with Charlotte Dellaca being the joint intermediate champion, and our import Tracey Brice from Canada taking away senior champion. Charlotte and Tracey also got awarded a swimming pocket each. Unfortunately, we didn't have the athletic sports this year, and this upset all the house captains immensely! (NOT - we were glad of the rest!) The effort that the people who did enter in the heats was good, and I'm sure that we would have done extremely well had the sports taken place. The next big event was HOUSE DAY. Well, Manuka's spirit was BIG! Our skit was better than I expected, so thanks to Kate the vice-captain and to the other 7th formers - it wouldn't have happened without you. Our sporting teams were totally the best -we got second in the basketball, and fourth in the badminton, but we still got dished out the job of coming 6th overall - it's a dirty job, but someone has to do it! Congratulationsto Angela Frewer for being in the team that won turnout at the Interschool One Day Horse Trial,

Vice Captain: Katharine Simpson,

and to Natasha Bowden who was a member of the team who won overall!!I thinkthat if there was an Intethouse One Day Horse Trial, Manuka would clean up! Congratulations to Charlotte Blair who gained 3rd place at the lntersecondary School skiing, and who is captain of our Interhouse ski-team that will do very well.

Tracey Brice at the end of July. I'm sure her tutor group miss her as much as everyone at Tonbridge. Thanks to all the teachers in my house for all their support, and to Kate and the 7th formers for their ideas and support. Good luck to next year's captain and vice-captain. I hope you have as much fun as I have had this year.

his year's basketballseason was startedoff with a few new fresh faces, one of those faces being our rotaryexchange student from Canada- TraceyBrice.Throughout the season the team developed a great attitudeand many skillsthus blitzingour way to the semi-finals in the Fridaynight competition. As a result of the semi-finalswe were placed third in the division. Our Canadian"import"had a very positiveinfluenceon the team and was importantin helping us set up an effectiveoffence and defence. Our two regularguards Staceyand Rebeccaplayed consistently, scoring many extra points. Pip and Tracey were particularlystrong in defence and point scoring. Our babies of the team Lucy,Charlotte,Chanel, and Kirstendeveloped an aggres-

sive, well focused play. Frith's heightwas an asset under the basket and helped us score those extra points we needed. Thanksto Chrisand Timour coaches and our managerMrBelcher. Good luck to next year's team you've got the right stuff so I hope to see you at the top.
