Dear Families and Friends,

St. Luke’s is thriving. This past year has been one of accomplishments and growth, made possible by the extraordinary support of this community as acknowledged in this Annual Report. An ambitious curriculum, innovative programming, and our commitment to faculty excellence all require significant philanthropic investment, and we have you to thank for this making it possible.

Every day on the Hilltop we witness excellence worth celebrating—in the hallways, on the stage, in the classrooms, and on the fields. Here are a few highlights from the past year: ●

In the Hallways - Each day students and faculty delivered on our mission of creating students with a deep love of learning, a strong moral compass, the commitment to serve and the confidence to lead. In March, we broke ground on the new Arts and Humanities Wing, a 39,000 square foot addition that reinvents our traditional library, brings expanded visual arts to the main academic building and creates a dedicated space to house designLab and our “maker” activities. ● On the stage - Accolades rained down on our talented thespians who were nominated for more prestigious Halo High School Theatre Awards (the equivalent of the Oscars) than any other high school in Connecticut, and left the celebration with four, including Best Performances by a Leading Actress and Actor in a Classical Play. ● In the Classrooms - For a second consecutive year, the French Department was honored with the absolute highest possible ranking for a French program in the United States. We completed our first full year of designLab where problems become projects and challenges are transformed into solutions. And, a small group of computer science students developed “Reality Check,” a website that helps students select their courses with a more informed, wide-angle lens of wholistic time commitment. ● On the fields - We had championships in girls’ soccer, both boys’ and girls’ basketball, softball, golf and girls’ tennis, and we celebrated several individual athletes across multiple sports who received league accolades. And importantly, we had more students playing multiple sports across the seasons. ● Financially - In June 2017 St. Luke’s endowment exceeded $29.7M, which marked a 16% increase in just 12 months time.

This past year was also the last of Board Chair Bob Wyckoff’s tenure. In the four years that Bob served our school community, he oversaw the opening of several new facilities, including the new Science Wing, Black Box Theatre, Class of 2015 Field, and Be Kind Plaza. He helped lead the creation and launch of a new Mission Statement and the development of a warmer and more engaging State of the School format. Under Bob’s leadership, the Endowment grew by more than $8.5M, and faculty and students were given more opportunities to thrive and excel. Thank you, Bob, for literally going Above & Beyond for St. Luke’s.

These operational funds enable St. Luke’s to offer a breadth and depth of curricula, maintain competitive faculty salaries and provide the individualized student attention which is a hallmark of a St. Luke’s education.

MOMENTUM CAMPAIGN

Publically launched in October 2017, the five-year, $36 million Momentum Campaign is currently in its 3rd year.

Campaign initiatives include Facilities (includes Class of 2017 Gift), Endowment and Annual Fund.

Annual Fund contributions are recognized in the Operations section of this Annual Report and endowment gifts are recognized in the Endowment portion of this report. An interim campaign report will be issued in 2018 to reflect donors’ comprehensive giving to the campaign to-date.

Endowments provide St. Luke’s with stability and opportunity. Income from these invested funds bolsters our annual operating budget and ensures that St. Luke’s is “built to last.”

Twelve million of the $36M goal of the Momentum Campaign is dedicated to strengthening St. Luke’s endowment through the establishment of three Endowed Rotating Faculty Chairs, and the growth of The Richard M. Whitcomb Scholarship Fund, and the Unrestricted Board Endowment Fund. Class of 2012 Center for Leadership Speaker Series Endowed Fund Established as a legacy gift from the Class of 2012, this fund helps underwrite the Center for Leadership’s speaker series program and support the Center for Leadership’s mission to develop every SLS student’s unique ability to lead and make a difference. Class of 2013 Student Life Endowed Fund The Class of 2013 established this fund to support activities related to student life and the promotion of school community and school spirit. Endowment Value as of 6/30/17: $309,616.32

George E. Stevens Horizons Prize Endowment Established in 2010, the Horizons Prize provides full scholarship support for a Horizons student each year for up to four years of high school. The intent of the prize is to inspire Horizons students to aspire to excellence at St. Luke’s School. The award recognizes students who love learning, demonstrate good character, pursue excellence, and embrace community. Endowment Value as of 6/30/17: $1,786,109

Karen E. Wiegman ’92 Award Endowed Fund Established in 2005, this award honors the memory of Karen Wiegman ’92 who passed away in the spring of 2004, and is remembered most notably for embracing the St. Luke's community and incorporating its values and ideals into her own personal growth. The Wiegman Award is presented annually to a senior who has shown the most growth over their years at St. Luke's School. This growth is marked by social connections, academic discovery, and personal maturation.

Parsons Family Women & Leadership Endowment Fund Established in 2013 to support initiatives related to women and leadership, this endowment supports initiatives including but not limited to program/conference support, individual awards, and/or scholarships for female students with leadership potential. Richard J. Pedrick Endowed Memorial Fund Established in 1995 in memory of Dick Pedrick, parent of four SLS students and dedicated board chair from 1989 until his death in 1995, the fund serves "to perpetuate, as a living memory, all that Dick Pedrick stood for."

S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award Endowed Fund This endowed fund was established in 2012 to recognize St. Luke’s students who are of good character and possess strong leadership potential. On an annual basis, an award recipient is presented with the opportunity to attend an Outward Bound program between his or her 9th and 10th grade years. The intent is that award recipients will challenge themselves, further personal growth and understanding, and learn leadership skills at an Outward Bound program that will benefit themselves, the St. Luke’s School community, and ultimately the larger world.

The Head of School Discretionary Endowed Fund Continues to Support Technology at St. Luke’s

The HOS Discretionary Fund met multiple needs this year, the most significant of which was to pilot a membership with Education Advisory Board (EAB), a center for research, technology, and professional development for educational institutions. EAB researches best practices in advancement, enrollment management, student affairs, business administration, and leadership. Director of Development Ninette Enrique stated, “EAB has been very helpful to the Development Office. From their daily briefs to one-on-one advice, EAB has been a full service organization committed to St. Luke’s success. The EAB advancement conference I attended in July 2017 was among the best conferences I have attended in my career. We will use their research to make changes in our development practice. As a result, we will improve the experience of our volunteers and donors, as well as achieve our institutional goals.”

Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award Fund Established in 2013 by the Royce Family, this fund supports an award to a middle school teacher who has most inspired students to fulfill their individual potentials through her/his commitment, deep affection for students, and most importantly, distinctive style and approach to teaching. Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Fund Supports Three “Dream Grants” in 20162017 Dreams came true this past year for two St. Luke’s faculty members, Math teacher Nancy Walsh and English teacher Susan Doran, thanks to the generosity of St. Luke’s parents of alumni Steve and Liz Goldstone. Each year, two to three winners of the annual “Dream Grant” award are selected by a panel of faculty members who review their peers’ proposals to pursue a personal project or journey that will enrich their lives.

Nancy’s proposal was to visit Ireland with her two sisters, spending ten days tracing her family heritage on the maternal side of her family.

Nancy’s mother passed away from cancer when Nancy was just 23, and they did not have an opportunity to travel to Ireland with her. Years later, Nancy shared, she and her sisters have supported one another as both Nancy and her sister Karen battled breast cancer, noting “Although cancer has had a huge impact on the females in my family, we refuse to let it define us, and try to live our lives to the fullest.”

Susan’s dream was to visit the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales—“two places in Great Britain whose landscapes and byways are relatively untouched by time, and give life to the authors I so admire and have taught for 20 years….

Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, and John Ruskin are represented in the former, while the Brontes, Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot, and Sir Walter Scott either lived or spent long sojourns in the latter.” Susan embarked on her journey with a copy of Margaret Drabble’s A Writer’s Britain and The Oxford Book of Literary Britain as her guides.

China Care Endowed Chair for Chinese Language Education Established in 2006, the China Care Endowment provides partial funding for a Chinese language instructor who also serves as the coordinator of the St. Luke's School China Care Club, a student organization which helps further the mission of China Care.

Tracy B. Duncan Innovation Award Fund Established in 2014 in honor of Tracy Duncan, this Fund provides awards to innovative members of the SLS community whose work has made a significant impact on the SLS student experience and in the development of a culture of innovation at St. Luke’s.

Richard M. Whitcomb Scholarship and Tribute Dinner October 21, 2016 More than 350 members of St. Luke's extended community gathered together on Friday, October 21, 2016 to honor and celebrate Headmaster Emeritus Dick Whitcomb and his innumerable contributions to St. Luke's School.

Over $1,300,000 was raised for the Richard M. Whitcomb Scholarship Endowed Fund, which enables "students with proven academic and co-curricular potential, strength of character and demonstrated financial need to attend St. Luke's School." Since the inception of the fund in 2003, eight students have been awarded Whitcomb Scholarships, and four of those scholars and/or their families were in attendance on Friday night.

St. Luke’s alumni, current and past parents, trustees, faculty, staff and friends spent the evening at The Waters Edge at Giovanni’s in Darien, (owned by St. Luke’s parents of alumni Sal and JoAnn Latorraca), laughing, dancing and celebrating Mr. Whitcomb’s humor, generosity and huge heart.

Head of School Mark Davis kicked off the night by welcoming guests and sharing his personal tribute to Dick, reflecting that "you can learn a lot about a man when you attempt to fill his shoes."

Davis was followed by Doug Stewart '07, the first recipient of the Whitcomb Scholarship, who reminded guests that "sometimes all a young person needs to succeed is to be given the right opportunity and a support system. I am truly thankful that the Whitcomb Scholarship provided both of these things to me."

Kathryn Godfrey '92 talked about how Mr. Whitcomb has been there for her again and again over the last twenty plus years. "Once you are a student of Mr. Whitcomb, you are always his student, and I am so grateful for that."

Dick’s children, Jon '83 and Andrea '83 Whitcomb, spoke about Dick as a father and a Headmaster. "He knew when to wink," Jon recounted, referring to his father’s ability to see the big picture and keep a sense of humor throughout his 22-year tenure as Headmaster. Andy and Jon both acknowledged their mother Barbara for her impact at St. Luke’s and as a source of strength for their family.

Honoree Dick Whitcomb spoke about how his own humble beginnings inspired his work to make life better for others.

LaTanya Langley '93 closed the speaking portion of the evening with a glowing tribute of Dick and the transformational power of having someone truly believe in you.

“Dick Whitcomb is the kind of man who changes lives,” stated Head of School Mark Davis at the top of the evening. Thousands of Dick’s former students can attest to that.

Parents’ Association

The St. Luke's Parents' Association consists of all parents and guardians of students enrolled at St. Luke's School. Its goal is to engage and involve the entire school community through educational, informational and social events. The PA fundraises every other year at the Spring Gathering, so money raised in 2015-2016 helped provide funding for professional development and non-tuition essentials for students on financial aid during the school year 2016-2017. In saying that, generous donations to the Wishing Tree at the event provided the school with cutting edge resources for the science, technology, engineering and math departments.
