ello and welcome to the third edition of the St Luke’s ‘Vista’ magazine. Vista is all about giving you, our supporters, an insight into the work we do at St Luke’s and is full of interesting features and articles. From pieces about the challenging work our medical teams face each day to a look at the innovative income generation initiatives produced by our busy fundraisers.

With yet another difficult year under our belt, we are looking to the future, focusing on how we can continue to deliver excellent care to as many people as possible. The past year has seen a number of changes and service developments throughout the organisation and the continuing effects of the current financial climate have meant we have had to work hard to ensure that St Luke’s continues to move forward.

Despite these troubled times, the commitment and dedication of our team

of staff and volunteers has meant that we have continued to improve our services, moving onwards and upwards in the field of specialist palliative care.

St Luke’s continues to deliver great care and quality services across every department, which would not be possible without the support of the communities we serve. The ongoing generosity we are lucky enough to get from our supporters means that we can continue to provide this vital service to the people of Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall.

“The whole tale flowed easily and was a page turner – the many fascinating incidents were described superbly and what was impressive was that they all rang true. In other words, a good insight into palliative medicine and a lovely book to recommend to aspiring palliative doctors.”

hose were the words of Dr Richard Hillier, renowned in the field of palliative medicine, describing ‘Feathers in the Dust’ – a novel based upon the experiences of a dedicated and highly respected hospice doctor.

Written by St Luke’s Consultant Dr Jeff Stephenson but under the pen name ‘David Trevelyan’ – the main character of the book - the story is set in the imaginary St Julian’s Hospice more than a decade ago.

The book follows the journey of David through hospice life and opens a window onto the often-misunderstood world of hospices and care for the dying.

It grapples with the themes of suffering and loss, of transcending love, and

Modern Matron - How Times Have Changed If someone asked you to describe your typical matron in three words, what would they be? Formidable, fearsome and strict are three that come straight to mind for a lot of people. But that has all changed...

F

It is never quiet on the 20-bedded unit and it is normally at full capacity, with a ratio of one nurse to two patients during the day.

The Hospice prides itself on having a very experienced and compassionate team of nurses, who cover the inpatient unit, 24 hours a day. Alison relies Modern Matron Alison on the help of her team of specialist Veli with patient nurses to maintain the high Melanie Tuffin quality care that St Luke’s Hospice is renowned for – that’s where Sister Sue Donne comes in. Sue, who supports Alison in the day to day running of the wards, has been with the Hospice since 2001. She previously worked in radiotherapy and oncology, as well as running a nursing home for a number of years.

ollowing plans to modernise the Health Service back in 2000, the ‘modern matron’ was born – the matron was back, but with a modern twist, concentrating on the details that make a difference to patients and their families.

For St Luke’s, Alison Veli has been the modern matron since 2006, having worked her way up through the Hospice, experiencing all levels of nursing after joining in 1993 as a staff nurse. Over the years, Alison has been aware of the changes and responsibilities of the matron. With her office right on the unit, Alison ensures that her staff and patients know that she is always there ready and willing to help at any time, despite her more strategic role.

“Although I am more involved with the paperwork and planning side of nursing, I am still very aware of the need of my presence on the ward,” says Alison.

“Whereas before, matrons were purely involved with patient care, I’m more involved with the organisation as a whole.”

“My main roles include strengthening governance and achieving compliance, staff appraisals and patient referrals. But if there is any need for my help on the ward, I am always ready and willing, as my first love has always been with patient care.”

“My role and first love has always been palliative care and at the Hospice, I am the main link between Alison and the clinical care we deliver on the unit,” says Sue. “I also play a supportive role to the nurses as well as getting involved in their professional development.”

For both Alison and Sue, their dedication to St Luke’s overflows into their personal lives and despite their busy working schedules, they enjoy supporting the fundraising team with various challenges.

These have included jumping out of a plane, throwing themselves off cliffs and their favourite, participation with the annual St Luke’s Hospice Midnight Walk for Women.

Who knows what the future will bring, but whatever happens, Alison and Sue will continue to help St Luke’s remain at the forefront of palliative care.

Although more involved with the strategic planning on the wards rather than the hands-on care, the modern matron still remains the public face at the place of care.

“Be nice Tom, and do a good turn every day.”

Words of wisdom famously spoken to Plymouth diving sensation, Tom Daley by his father, Rob as he waved his famous son off to the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year.

I

t is clear that Tom respects his father and takes his good advice very much to heart.

This is manifest in his willingness to help support struggling local charities like St Luke’s Hospice!

In terms of celebrity endorsement, a sixteen year old Olympic diving star and a local Hospice may not appear to be a terribly good match. But the fact is Hospices are places of love, care, support and encouragement much like a normal loving family home - such as the Daley household. Tom lives with his father Rob, mother Debbie and younger brothers William and Ben in Plymouth. He took some time from his busy training schedule to answer some questions for ‘Vista.’

Do you know what a Hospice does?

Yes, it is a place where very ill people can find a friendly and loving environment. I think St Luke’s Hospice is an amazing charity...an inspirational cause.

You’ve supported St Luke’s events in the past: ‘One to Remember’ Fashion Show 2009 at Plymouth Pavilions (on-stage with Tonia Couch and the BBC’s Judi Spiers) and publicity for ‘Tinside at Twilight’ swim 2010, did you enjoy the experience?

Yes, St Luke’s always puts on a great show – and it’s for a great cause. The fashion show was lots of fun to do. Unfortunately I was away for the actual Tinside Pool event but I was pleased to be able help with publicity for it.

How do you feel about being asked to help in this way?

I feel happy that I am able to give something back to the city and it is something that I find rewarding and inspiring too.

Is it important for people in the public eye, like you, to support local charities?

Yes – because it draws attention to that charity. It helps make people aware of

How do you, and your family, deal with it?

I think it is funny and nice too for people to support you and respect you. My family think it is weird when people get excited because to them I am just Tom. Aside from your 2012 Olympic ambitions, what are your hopes for the future?

I hope to continue in my diving career, go to University or College when I finish my A levels and I hope to become a TV presenter in the future – not necessarily sporting.

Were you surprised to learn just how much (£3.8 million) St Luke’s must raise each year to stay open?

VERY surprised! This is a lot of money to remain open. I think that everyone needs to do everything in their power to keep it running – and keep supporting all of your fundraising events.

Has the ‘celebrity’ aspect of your sporting career surprised you?

Yes because it was something that I never expected.

“We’re all one big happy family – I love it here!” ...Not the kind of quote the average person would associate with a Hospice is it? However, that patient was talking about his experience of St Luke’s Day Hospice in Plymouth.

S

ituated in the grounds of the beautiful Pearn House in Eggbuckland, the Day Hospice is for most of, if not all, the patients that visit, a home away from home.

During the week, you can always hear someone having a good time, whether it’s laughter in the lounge or singing from the craft area. It provides an environment that is aimed at giving people living with a progressive life-limiting illness that chance to regain confidence and independence – a place where they can get away from everyday life.

The Day Hospice plays host to an average of 15 patients a day who are always eager to visit, to relax and have a chat with fellow patients.

Whether it’s taking a dip in the ever popular bubble bath, lying back and relaxing while the complementary therapists work their magic, getting stuck in with the arts and crafts, or just sitting down and relaxing; at the

Day Hospice, the patients can just forget all about life’s troubles.

Boo Tubb, a Health Care Assistant at the Day Hospice, has worked for St Luke’s for 8 ½ years.

Previously to her current role, Boo worked on the Inpatient Unit for 4½ years but having worked a day a week at the Day Hospice, decided to make the change permanently.

“Although we are the same organisation, there are so many differences between working here and working on the Inpatient Unit”, she said.

“Primarily, we play a social role for St Luke’s and the Day Hospice is somewhere the patients can come and forget about their illnesses. We often deal with any hiccups that may occur and if they ever want to talk about

their illness, we are always here to listen.”

For Boo, it is seeing the patients coming out of their shells and enjoying themselves that makes her job so worthwhile. She added: “It’s such a fun place, despite the illnesses the patients have. There have been times when the patients have been listening to music and they have just got up and danced.

It such a nice thing to see here, it’s like they haven’t got a care in the world.”

Celebrating a Special Occasion?

ver the years we have seen a significant increase in people using their special occasion to help St Luke’s Hospice. Whether it is a birthday, retirement, anniversary or even a wedding. Instead of receiving presents they ask for donations to St Luke’s, some have even given our pin badges as favours at weddings.

“Sharing my retirement with St Luke’s was the least I could do”, said one of our supporters.

“I had a great day and knowing that my presents were going to help people made it really worthwhile.”

Celebration Box

A variety of celebration boxes are available to lend out; we even provide personalised

envelopes for family and friends to pop their ‘present’ in the box. This way, they still feel they are giving a gift; the recipient can celebrate in the same way and St Luke’s benefits as well. If the Gift Aid form is completed we can even add 25% to the donation.

It doesn’t need to be a big celebration either – donations range from under £50, which could help to provide pillows, bath mats and aromatherapy sessions, to more than £1000, all of which add up to making a big difference to the specialist care we provide.

Every gift matters. Alison Veli, Modern Matron said “If a patient has a birthday during their stay with us we like to make it a time to remember and we often have a little celebration on the ward with family and friends.

“Giving gifts from birthdays and other occasions is a lovely way for people to support the Hospice, for which we are very grateful. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has thought of us in this way.”

You may well have heard or seen the term Gift Aid, but do you know how important Gift Aid actually is?

I

t is easy to increase any donation you make to us, with no extra cost to you whatsoever. If you pay tax in the UK we, as a charity can reclaim 25p from the taxman for every £1 you donate. So, if 500 people donate £10 each and all make a declaration on Gift Aid we would receive £6,250 as opposed to £5,000 without Gift Aid – that’s an extra £1,250 for nothing!

An Interview with Dr Mary Nugent “Patients must NEVER be left without hope! If hope of cure is gone, there is hope for lack of pain, for peace and for dignity. I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to get someone out of pain and when you go back to see them the fright has gone out of their eyes.”

r Mary Nugent is passionate about her work with terminally ill patients. As the Medical Director of St Luke’s Hospice (since 1993) and a senior consultant in palliative medicine, she heads up the St Luke’s Palliative Care Team at Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital.

She is also a member of the Hospice’s Senior Management Team.

broken his leg. He mentioned that he did some shifts at the Hospice and that was my somewhat abrupt introduction to St Luke’s.”

Dr Nugent’s devotion to her job, which she describes as; “My life’s work,” is undeniable.

Her first contact with St Luke’s happened in the early 1980’s rather bizarrely because of a ski-ing accident. She recalls:

The Hospice at that time was a sevenbedded unit in Syrena House at Dean Cross in Plymstock. Dr Sheila Cassidy was the Medical Director and she quickly spotted the young GP’s potential. By 1985 Mary had been “head-hunted” and was employed as her assistant! She recalls: “In the early days when St Luke’s was small we worked very long hours but, you burn out in palliative care if you work ridiculous hours all the time.”

of which was the “unbelievably thrilling” move in 1988 to a purposebuilt 20-bedded inpatient unit at Turnchapel.

In 1993, halfway through her medical career, she was appointed as Medical Director insisting that she was promoted purely “...because nobody else would do it” (an idea that colleagues vehemently dismiss.)

“Over the years the developments within St Luke’s as a service have been great and there has been a big expansion in the provision of palliative care.

We began (in 1982) simply as an inpatient unit for very sick and dying patients. By 2005/6 we had begun operating our

I had never before worked at Derriford – I’d been at Freedom Fields and Greenbank – but not at Derriford. I’d been a GP before working in palliative care. It was slightly daunting but I was very welcomed by the consultant group here (at Derriford) – and very respected. They were wonderful – no barriers were put up for me.

We had to make it work.”

Today, the St Luke’s Palliative Care Team at Derriford Hospital is a close knit team providing specialist care and support to many hospital patients. It works very closely with the Hospice and the community teams and also gives leadership and education to many doctors and nurses. Recently Dr Nugent has been very busy establishing

the Hospital End of Life Care strategy (the care and management of people in the last year of life).

“The needs of the patients must always be at the centre of our service” is one of Dr Mary’s regularly repeated phrases.

Whereas previously St Luke’s Hospice had been separate from Derriford Hospital, in 2005 that changed and a new St Luke’s Hospital Service was developed. There are many patients in Derriford who need palliative treatment and Hospice level of care. Dr Nugent took up a newly vacant post of Palliative Care Consultant at Derriford Hospital whilst remaining as Medical Director at St Luke’s. In effect, she was to link the two organisations. She says:

Jean Holsen has been a member of the St Luke’s Hospice Lottery for nearly three years and believes it is a fantastic way of supporting a charity that is close to her heart.

peaking about how she joined, Jean says: “Mary (Lottery Collector), who I’ve known for a long time, came round to my door recruiting for new members and we

got chatting. After she told me about the Hospice Lottery, I liked the sound of it and signed up – I haven’t looked back since! My daughter has been cursing me since I joined because she has been a member for quite a time and hasn’t won. I’ve been a member for almost 3 years and I’ve won twice!”

Started in 1996, the St Luke’s Lottery is vital in raising much-needed funds for the Hospice. With more than 11,500 active players, the Lottery raises around £300,000 each year – a significant chunk of the £3.5million we need each year to stay open.

Since becoming a member of the Lottery, Jean has been a patient at the Hospice, where she stayed for 3 weeks to have her Lymphoedema treated.

Jean was apprehensive about going in, but after she was admitted, her fears were put at ease and her knowledge of what a Hospice was changed.

“To go into the Hospice, I was a bit nervous because I thought it was all about death, but it’s not” added Jean. ”When I was in there, it was like a six star hotel and I was treated like a queen, it was such a happy place. They really looked after me when I was in there.”

“I joined the Hospice Lottery before I went in, but having being cared for at the Hospice, by playing the Lottery I feel like I’m giving something back.

They cared for me so well while I was being treated and it has made such a great difference to my life and how I am now.”

Jean is just one example of the thousands of members of our Lottery who have been touched by St Luke’s whether it has been as a patient or as a family member or friend of someone that has been looked after at the Hospice.

All our members really do make a difference and help us continue to offer specialised palliative care to the people of Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall.

s a local charity, St Luke’s Hospice relies heavily on its 1,100 volunteers who collectively contribute 350,000 hours of work a year. If St Luke’s had to recruit paid staff to cover the work covered by our volunteers then our costs would rise by 25%.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and carry out various roles such as; retail assistants, receptionists, servery assistants (coffee bar), complementary therapists, befrienders and bereavement support, fundraising and events assistants, chaplaincy, drivers, day hospice volunteers, maintenance and administration.

Kate Pyman, Volunteer Services Coordinator for St Luke’s Hospice says: “We are very appreciative and grateful for all the generous help we receive from our volunteers. They play a big part in the day-today life of the Hospice. We are always on the lookout for eager and enthusiastic people who are willing to give up a couple of hours of their time to help in a number of ways”.

As part of this role, Kate has also launched ‘Volunteer Employee Experience Days’ where we are keen to partner with companies who recognise the value of investing in the local community. We firmly believe that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) schemes, like employer supported volunteering, can bring tangible benefits to both the Hospice and the companies who choose to work with us.

Being active in the community by partnering with a highly regarded charity like St Luke’s will impress stakeholders and help to set your organisation apart from those who do not.

St Luke’s Fundraising Events 2011 There’s Something For Everyone!

he Fundraising Team needs to raise at least £3.5 million each year. There are a variety of events ranging from jumping out of a plane to growing your facial hair; which one will you choose to do to help your local Hospice?

Below is a taster of what’s on offer…

In its first year, the Tour De Moor attracted more than 500 cyclists and raised over £45,000, exceeding everyone’s expectations.

With the 35 mile route taking in the tough terrain of Dartmoor, it is a really challenging event but those who completed the mammoth course are determined to come back and beat their time!

Tree Surfing - 13th March

‘Wood’ you dare take on the 50ft high assault course and raise funds for St Luke’s?

Tree Surfing is sure to get your pulse racing and push you to your limits. High up in the treetops is the Tree Surfing assault course – a challenging mix of zip wires, rope bridges and sky - high ladders.

If you are looking for a high adrenaline challenge, then this is the event for you!

Skydive - 26th March & 20th Aug

If you want to literally rise to the challenge and jump 15,000ft out of an aeroplane, then the St Luke’s Skydive is definitely the challenge for you.

Taking place at Dunkeswell Airfield Nr Honiton, the tandem skydive takes in breathtaking views from the North and South Devon coastlines through to the Bristol Channel and South Wales.

Led by St Luke’s Hospice Chaplain Trevor Smith, the annual Midday Memory Mile takes place across the Plymouth Hoe. Popular with all ages, the event often attracts around 200 people, who join together to take in the views of the Plymouth Sound and remember their loved ones. With live entertainment as well, it’s always a brilliant event and is open to everyone.

An established Hospice tradition, Light up a Life services are open to anyone who wishes to attend. Those who have attended our previous services say they found great comfort in being with others to celebrate the lives of those they have lost. The final three services are always held at St Andrews Church in Plymouth and its stunning surroundings are a fitting backdrop to these emotional services.

t is a sad fact that many families find themselves embroiled in a dispute following a death in the family. Recent statistics published indicate that the majority of people die without leaving a Will. Worse still, a badly drawn Will often gives rise to problems that are more difficult to resolve than having no Will at all! A badly drawn Will may not be valid and this could result in money or property going to those who were not intended to inherit. Trusts of money and/or property are often created - not by design but by the making of a poorly considered or prepared Will.

A properly drafted and considered Will is usually all it takes to prevent a challenge or claim. However, even if a Will has been fully and properly considered and expertly drafted, there remains the possibility that a member of the family or indeed someone else could bring a claim against the Estate under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. The possibility of such a claim should be considered in all cases and taken into account when making your Will.

Such was the frequency with which I was being consulted by disappointed beneficiaries, or those excluded altogether from a Will (or under intestacy), that some 9 years ago I embarked on a course study to become a member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists. There are other lawyers who undertake this type of work but they are not usually specialists in this complicated area of law and may not have access to the resources or have the benefit of the study and training that I have received. These factors, together with the direct experience I have gained in the past 9 years, have been the main reason why I am now often consulted by those involved in or contemplating a claim. The majority of my work is referred to me by other solicitors and professionals (e.g. Accountants) who are aware of my specialisation and reputation for getting the job done.

A dispute over a Will or Estate is not like other litigation. It can (and usually does) tear families apart. Regrettably, expectation of money or disappointment at not receiving an anticipated legacy is often the cause of a dispute. A common sense approach is usually what is required and mediation should be considered in every case. Using a solicitor inexperienced in these types of cases could be a real problem for all concerned and greatly increase the costs or risks inherent in any litigation.

The cost is minimal when compared with the problems which can be associated with loss or destruction.
