About the music at today’s service
Matthew Martin is Precentor and Director of College Music at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, and studied at Oxford University and The Royal Academy of Music. He has been commissioned by The Tallis Scholars, the choirs of Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Gabrieli Consort and The Sixteen, and won the Liturgical category in the 2013 British Composer Awards. Recent projects include a festival anthem (In the midst of thy Temple) for the choir of Westminster Abbey, marking the 750th anniversary of its refounding, and a test piece (Triptych) for the 2019 St Albans International Organ Competition.
Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585) is one of the trinity of T’s among Tudor composers (the others being Taverner and Tye) and his long career extends from the late Henrician period until well into the middle years of Elizabeth’s reign. In stature among church composers, he is second only to Byrd, whose teacher he was, and with whom he was a close friend. Apart from being organists of the Chapel Royal, they also jointly produced the celebrated Cantiones Sacrae of 1575. Tallis was equally at home in the Latin and English rite, and his works are generally typified by a uniform warmth and grandeur of design. The well-known anthem If ye love me is typical of Tallis’s English anthems. Set for four voices, the text is proclaimed syllabically, in keeping with post-reformation sensibilities.
Everett Titcomb (1884-1968) was born in Amesbury, Massachusetts, and was nurtured in the climate of such Boston-area composers as Eugene Thayer, Dudley Buck, and Horatio Parker. In 1910, he became organist and choirmaster at Boston’s Church of
Saint John the Evangelist, Bowdoin Street, a position he retained for fifty years. This parish, founded in 1883 and administered by the Society of Saint John the Evangelist (the Cowley Fathers), strongly espoused the values of the Oxford Movement expressed both in service to the urban poor and in recovery of a rich Catholic liturgical practice within Anglicanism. Titcomb was a major force in introducing plainsong and renaissance polyphony to twentieth-century Anglicans. The Schola Cantorum at Saint John’s in the 1930s and ‘40s, under Titcomb’s direction, was notable for its singing of chant and polyphony at a time when such music was rarely heard.
Titcomb’s own choral and organ compositions, many of which contain references to chant melodies, united elements of ancient expressions with the artistic palette of twentieth-century America in a parallel manner to what Healey Willan was doing at Saint Mary Magdalene, Toronto. In addition to Titcomb’s service at Saint John the Evangelist, he taught chant and sacred music at New England Conservatory and Boston University. Titcomb’s compositions conservatively reflect the musical aesthetics of his time. His setting of the Eastertide anthem Christ our Passover is based on the Gregorian chant Communion for Easter Day.
Larry J. Long is currently the Director of Music and Organist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. He was previously Organist & Choirmaster at the Church of the Epiphany in Manhattan for 12 years. He is also a composer with works published by GIA Publications, Inc.,

The organ voluntaries this morning are by the American composer Gerald Near. Near’s composition teachers include Leo Sowerby, Leslie Bassett, and Dominick Argento, respectively at the American Conservatory in Chicago, the University of Michigan, and the University of Minnesota. Near’s compositions include a wealth of sacred choral music, and he is represented in The Hymnal 1982 both by service music and hymn settings.
