THE ACCLAMATION

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, who inspired your servant Luke the physician to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of your Son: Graciously continue in your Church this love and power to heal, to the praise and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Sirach 38:1-4,6-10,12-14

Honor physicians for their services, for the Lord created them; for their gift of healing comes from the Most High, and they are rewarded by the king. The skill of physicians makes them distinguished, and in the presence of the great they are admired. The Lord created medicines out of the earth, and the sensible will not despise them. And he gave skill to human beings that he might be glorified in his marvelous works. By them the physician heals and takes away pain; the pharmacist makes a mixture from them. God’s works will never be finished; and from him health spreads over all the earth. My child, when you are ill, do not delay, but pray to the Lord, and he will heal you. Give up your faults and direct your hands rightly, and cleanse your heart from all sin. Then give the physician his place, for the Lord created him; do not let him leave you, for you need him. There may come a time when recovery lies in the hands of physicians, for they too pray to the Lord that he grant them success in diagnosis and in healing, for the sake of preserving life.

Reader The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 147: 1-7

Said by all, remaining seated.

Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises to our God! * how pleasant it is to honor him with praise!

The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem; * he gathers the exiles of Israel.

He heals the brokenhearted * and binds up their wounds. He counts the number of the stars * and calls them all by their names.

Great is our Lord and mighty in power; * there is no limit to his wisdom. The Lord lifts up the lowly, * but casts the wicked to the ground. Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; * make music to our God upon the harp.

THE

SECOND LESSON 2 Timothy 4:5-13

As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. Do your best to come to me soon, for Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful in my ministry. I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN 232 (stanza 2: Saint Luke - October 18) · Nyland (see pg 16) Sung by all, standing.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 4:14-21

Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” And he rolled up the

scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE

HOMILY The Reverend Caroline Stacey

THE NICENE CREED

Said by all

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

We include prayers for the universal Church, the world and our local community, those in need, the sick and suffering, and the dying. In addition to the printed prayers, we are invited to pray for those concerns in our own hearts. You may stand or kneel during this time.

The Deacon reads the intercessions for the parish. Then the leader says In peace, we pray to you, Lord God.

Intercessor Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them; People Who put their trust in you.

Intercessor We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins.

Said by all

Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Celebrant says the Absolution Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE PEACE

Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you.

Then the Ministers and People greet each other in the name of the Lord.

The Celebrant then says an offertory sentence.

THE OFFERTORY

After the peace, the celebrant invites the people to offer their gifts to God. This is a time when we are asked to think intentionally about how we can give back to the Church in support of God’s mission in an effort to make our own proclamation of the Good News. It is important to remember that gifts come in many forms including time, talent, and treasure. What gifts can you give to God, and share with others today?

During the Offertory a hymn or anthem is sung. The gifts of money are brought with the bread and wine for the Eucharist to the altar and presented to God.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM

Robert Lowry, arr. Aaron Copland

Shall we gather by the river

Where bright angel’s feet have trod

With its crystal tide forever

Flowing by the throne of God.

Soon we’ll reach the shining river, Soon our pilgrimage will cease, Soon our happy hearts will quiver

With the melody of peace.

Yes we’ll gather by the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river, Gather with the saints by the river That flows by the throne of God.

OFFERTORY HYMN 293 · Grand Isle (see pg 17)

Sung by all, standing.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Celebrant continues

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For in the multitude of your saints you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that never fades away. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name.

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Hymnal S125

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

Prayer A, Book of Common Prayer, page 361

All are invited to stand or kneel while the Eucharistic Prayer is read by the Celebrant. During the prayer, the Celebrant says Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant concludes. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

Said by all

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

The Celebrant breaks the bread. A short period of silence follows.

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Celebrant The gifts of God for the people of God.

HOLY COMMUNION
