EASTERTIDE 3

Ambrosian chant

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Hymnal S280

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

All are seated.

THE ACCLAMATION
4 EASTERTIDE

THE FIRST READING Acts 10:44-48

While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, “Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

All remain seated for the psalm.

PSALM 98

Anglican chant (Ivor Atkins)

Sing to the Lord a new song, * for he has done marvelous things. With his right hand and his holy arm * has he won for himself the victory.

The Lord has made known his victory; * his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, * and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. Sing to the Lord with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song.

EASTERTIDE 5

With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the Lord. Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein.

Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, when he comes to judge the earth. In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity.

THE SECOND LESSON 1 John 5:1-6

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

Reader The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

6 EASTERTIDE

ALLELUIA

Plainsong, Mode VIII

The Gospel procession makes its way to the pulpit. A Cantor intones the Alleluia, and the congregation repeats it once, then again following the Versicle.

V. Open our minds, O Lord, to understand the Scriptures;* make our hearts burn within us when you speak.

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 15:9-17

Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

About the music at today’s service

Michael McCarthy is the Director of Music and Choirmaster at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The setting of Vidi aquam heard this morning was composed to commemorate the investiture of Presiding Bishop Dr. Katherine Jefferts Schori, which took place at the cathedral in November 2006.

James MacMillan is the pre-eminent Scottish composer of his generation, producing exciting new music which combines strong rhythm, raw emotional power and spiritual meditation. His music shows a strong connection with religious and social themes. He first attracted major attention at the 1990 BBC Proms in the UK, with the première of The Confession of Isobel Gowdie. His most widely-known work to date, however, is his percussion concerto Veni, Veni, Emmanuel (1992), which has received over 350 performances.

In December 2008 he was awarded the British Composer Award for Liturgical Music, for his Strathclyde Motets, one of which is the Eastertide motet Pascha nostrum, a setting of the Communion text for Easter Day.

Larry J. Long is currently Director of Music and Organist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. He was Organist & Choirmaster at the Church of the Epiphany in Manhattan for 12 years. He is also a composer with works published by GIA Publications, Inc., Augsburg Fortress, St. James Music Press, World Library Publications and Paraclete Press. He received the Bachelor of Music degree in church music from Valparaiso University and the Master of Music degree in organ performance from Southern Methodist University. Other studies were at the Royal School of Church Music in Croydon, England, and with Anton Heiller at the Haarlem Summer Academy for Organists in

the Netherlands. His setting of the Eastertide Marian antiphon was composed for the Choir of St. Luke in the Fields.

The American composer Gerald Near has been an active church musician and organist. He is one of the most important composers of liturgical music today. Gerald Near’s composition teachers include Leo Sowerby, Leslie Bassett, and Dominick Argento, respectively at the American Conservatory in Chicago, the University of Michigan, and the University of Minnesota. Near’s compositions include a wealth of sacred choral music, and he is represented in The Hymnal 1982 both by service music and hymn settings. His style shows the influence of Herbert Howells and Maurice Duruflé, and plainsong figures importantly in his music. Aurora lucis rutilat (‘Light’s glittering morn bedecks the sky) and Ad coenum Agni provide (‘The Lamb’s high banquet we await’) are preludes on Eastertide Gregorian chants.

Kenneth Leighton began his musical life as a chorister at Wakefield Cathedral and read Classics and music under Bernard Rose at Queen’s College, Oxford. He studied composition with Goffredo Petrassi in Rome and held positions at the Royal Naval School of Music and at the universities of Leeds, Edinburgh and Oxford before being appointed Reid Professor of Music at the University of Edinburgh in 1970, a post he held until his death. One of the most important British composers of the post-war period, he published over 100 works, many for church use, including eight mass settings. Leighton’s Fanfare for Organ was composed on a commission from Oxford University Press.
