Annual tree sale begins March 1

Help increase our city’s tree canopy by adding trees to your landscape! Starting March 1, visit www.treetrust.org to order and pay for your trees as part of the city’s annual tree sale. Trees are $35 each; a maximum of three trees per property may be purchased. Preview of the 2025 available trees will begin mid-February.

Need a tree but not ready to plant it yourself? The city offers a full-service tree sale option where the city covers a portion of the planting costs. Total cost can be as low as $35 depending on your location in the city. The cost-share amount is higher for those who have had an ash tree removed due to emerald ash borer. Visit treecanopyslp.myshopify.com to find out more and reserve your tree starting February!

Don’t feed wildlife

Many residents enjoy viewing and feeding wildlife in the city. Unfortunately, improper feeding can lead to large animals such as deer, turkeys and geese collecting on properties, which often results in landscape damage to surrounding properties. City code allows feeding as long as the feeder is at least 5 feet above the ground and the ground remains cleaned of spilled feed.

Emerald ash borer

Emerald ash borer (EAB) is widespread in St. Louis Park. City staff trained as Minnesota tree inspectors will be out marking ash trees infested with EAB for removal. By city ordinance, the city marks public and private trees that may become hazardous to the public and need to be removed. Healthy or lightly infested trees can be protected from EAB with treatment injections. The city has assistance programs for treatments. For income qualified households, the city offers additional assistance with removals, treatments and replanting. Visit www.stlouisparkmn.gov/eab for more information.

Energy Assistance Program now open

Minnesota’s Energy Assistance Program helps pay for heat and electricity costs for income-qualified families. Both homeowners and renters can qualify for the free assistance program that offers an average of $500 monthly per household, as well as support for emergencies, appliance replacement and more. Applications are open now for winter 2024 – 2025 and are due by May 31, 2025. For more information and to apply, visit mn.gov/energyassistance.

Save money on energy upgrades with the Climate Champions program

Climate Champions is St. Louis Park’s energy efficiency, cost-share and recognition program, available to owners of homes, multifamily properties, businesses and organizations. Receive a free or low-cost energy assessment before qualifying for partial reimbursement on energy upgrades such as insulation, cold climate heat pumps and solar.

Learn more at www.stlouisparkmn.gov/climate-champions.

Smart salting

Use deicing salt sparingly to protect Minnesota waters! As the first snow of the season arrives, Minnesotans start thinking about clearing snow and ice from pavement — sometimes with salt. But when the snow melts or it rains, the salt, which contains chloride, runs into storm drains and nearby lakes, rivers and groundwater.

Though environmentally safe, effective and inexpensive alternatives to salt aren’t yet available, smart salting strategies can help reduce chloride pollution in state waters. You might think more salt means more melting and safer conditions, but it’s not true! Salt will effectively remove snow and ice if salt grains are scattered about 3 inches apart. A coffee mug full of salt (about 12 ounces) is all you need for a 20-foot driveway or 10 sidewalk squares (roughly 1,000 square feet). Consider using a hand-held spreader to apply salt consistently and use salt only in critical areas. Sweep up any extra salt that is visible on dry pavement – it is no longer doing any work and will be washed away into local waters. Visit the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's Smart Salting webpage, www.pca.state.mn.us/business-with-us/smart-salting-training for more information.

Rainwater Rewards

Funding available for landscaping projects

It’s not too early to start thinking about spring landscaping projects that can help manage stormwater. The city’s Rainwater Rewards program offers funding and technical guidance to residential property owners who install projects that do at least one of the following: protect and restore stormwater by capturing pollutants in rainwater runoff, increase the watershed’s ability to store water, preserve and restore native plant and wildlife communities, or protect and preserve groundwater quality and quantity. Project examples include rain gardens, rain barrels, permeable pavement, green roofs and other innovative stormwater management practices. Program benefits include cost share, guidance with management practices, selecting designers and contractors, and future planning. The program is available to residential properties in St. Louis Park. Applications are accepted year-round while funding remains. To learn more, visit www.stlouisparkmn.gov/rainwater-rewards, or contact Erick Francis, water resources manager, at efrancis@stlouisparkmn.gov or 952.924.2690.

St. Louis Park Art Fair Application

The St. Louis Park Art Fair is made possible by a partnership between Friends of the Arts and the City of St. Louis Park, as well as by the event founder and coordinator, St. Louis Park resident Alysha Boie. As a local maker, she envisioned organizing a local event to celebrate local artists and build community pride. She applied for and received a St. Louis Park Arts & Culture Grant to put on the inaugural St. Louis Park Art Fair at the ROC with fiscal sponsorship from Friends of the Arts.

Thanks to Alysha’s vision, leadership and management, St. Louis Park has a growing art fair, bringing the community together and celebrating local artists and makers!

Be A Hydrant Hero

The St. Louis Park Fire Department would like to remind homeowners and businesses with fire hydrants on or near their property to please shovel the snow around the fire hydrant after each snowfall and keep the hydrant clear of plant overgrowth during the summer.

There are roughly 1,700 fire hydrants in St. Louis Park, and although firefighters remove snow around the hydrants after a snowfall, they can't always clean them all in a timely manner. This is where you can help. Volunteer to become a Hydrant Hero and keep the hydrants around your homes and businesses clear of snow in the winter and free of plant overgrowth in the summer. Interested volunteers can adopt a hydrant at www.hydranthero.org. Choose a hydrant, click on the “Adopt me” link and fill out the registration form – you can even give your hydrant a name! For questions, contact Lieutenant Bob Hampton at bhampton@stlouisparkmn.gov or 952.924.2599.

Senior Community Services volunteer

Volunteers are a valuable addition and allow Senior Community Services to serve more participants in their Home & Outdoor Maintenance (HOME) program. Volunteers tackle outdoor chores as the leaves start to change, clear ice and snow when the flakes begin to fly and help with an expanding technology support program.

Email home@seniorcommunity.org or call 952.746.4046 with questions.

Senior Community Services is a nonprofit organization with a mission to innovate and deliver services that meet the changing needs of older adults and their caregivers.
