On the fifth week in January, the gnomes will be placed together in a final location. We will give clues to help locate the different gnomes each week on Tuesday morning through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@stlouispark), as well as GovDelivery emails. Inspired by: Black History Month Join us in our city parks in February for “Inspired by: Black History Month.” Through the program, short biographies of Black and African American City of St. Louis Park and school district employees will be featured throughout the city’s parks, giving residents and visitors the opportunity to learn more about those that make up our community and workforce. Each poster will highlight one employee and will include someone that inspires them when it comes to Black history. Park visitors will have the chance to celebrate Black History Month with us by learning about the influential people throughout Black history who have inspired our employees.

Move into Spring challenge AGES 21+ The Shops at West End, 1621 West End Blvd. Join us for the second annual Frosty Mug Crawl. Attendees will make their way down West End Boulevard (1/10th of a mile) with their parks and recreation passport good for beverages valid at various West End businesses. Those that register will also receive a long sleeve shirt to celebrate completing the event.

ALL AGES Get moving this spring and challenge yourself to make or keep up the habit of being active for 30 minutes consistently each day. Being active will look different for each person, so find an active move or activity that increases your heart rate. The goal is to do some kind of movement daily for 46 days. With spring coming, it’s time to re-energize yourself and movement can help you do that one step, jump or pedal at a time. Submit your tracking sheet by May 23 to be entered into a drawing for a prize. Registered participants who submit their tracking sheets will also receive a free one-time use daily pass to the St. Louis Park Aquatic Park.

Go green Recycling Champions training in January

Request a sustainability presentation!

The city will host a Recycling Champions training on Jan. 23 from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Municipal Service Center, 7305 Oxford St. The Recycling Champions program was launched in 2017 to engage residents who are interested in learning more about recycling. Through the program, residents serve as ambassadors in the community and share what they learn with family, friends and neighbors. For more information and to sign up, visit www.stlouisparkmn.gov/recycling-champions.

City sustainability staff are available to speak with congregations, condo associations, book clubs, business owners, cycling groups, Scout packs – just about anyone in the community – about city sustainability programs and resources. Presentations can be tailored to specific topics of interest and there will be plenty of time for questions. Hosting a local event? Staff can also engage with attendees at local events through tabling. Visit bit.ly/3JE52hB to submit a request.

Organics workshop

Stay informed about federal, state and local incentives

City solid waste staff will host an organics workshop on April 16 from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. to help residents learn more about the city's organics collection program. The workshop will include a tour of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community compost site. Transportation will be provided by the city. Visit www.stlouisparkmn.gov/garbage-recycling to learn more and sign up.

Have you been hearing about rebates and tax credits for home energy projects, solar, e-bikes, electric vehicles and more? It’s hard to keep track of it all! The city’s sustainability division is here to help. Subscribe to our climate action e-newsletter at www.stlouisparkmn.gov/sustainability and stay informed about the many financial incentives from the city, utilities, state and federal government to help you live more sustainably.

Annual tree sale begins March 1

Do your part: adopt a storm drain!

Help increase our city’s tree canopy by adding trees to your landscape! Starting March 1, visit www.treetrust.org to order and pay for your trees as part of the city’s annual tree sale. Trees are $35 each; a maximum of three trees per property may be purchased. Preview of the 2024 available trees will begin mid-February.

St. Louis Park residents are invited to adopt a storm drain by committing to keep it clear of leaves, trash and other debris. The simple act of sweeping and cleaning up around a storm drain protects creeks, wetlands and lakes by preventing pollution from entering our shared waterways.

Need a new tree but not ready to plant it yourself? You are in luck! The city now offers a full-service tree sale option where the city covers a portion of the planting costs. Total cost can be as low as $35 depending on your location in the city. The cost share amount is higher for those who have had an ash tree removed due to emerald ash borer. Visit treecanopyslp.myshopify.com to find out more and reserve your tree today!

Don’t feed wildlife Many residents enjoy viewing and feeding wildlife in the city. Unfortunately, improper feeding can lead to large animals such as deer, turkeys and geese collecting on properties, which often results in landscape damage to surrounding properties. City code allows feeding as long as the feeder is at least 5 feet above the ground and the ground remains cleaned of spilled feed.

Emerald ash borer Emerald ash borer (EAB) is now widespread in St. Louis Park. City staff trained as Minnesota tree inspectors will be out marking ash trees infested with EAB for removal. By city ordinance, the city marks both public and private trees that need to be removed. Trees with EAB are typically identified by light-colored patches of damaged bark left by woodpeckers eating EAB larvae. Healthy or lightly infested trees can be protected from EAB with injections. Rainbow Treecare provides injections at a reduced rate for St. Louis Park residents. Visit www.stlouisparkmn.gov/eab for more information.

St. Louis Park Art Fair application The St. Louis Park Art Fair is held annually in early September at the ROC. The art fair is made possible by a partnership between Friends of the Arts and the City of St. Louis Park, as well as the event founder and coordinator, St. Louis Park resident Alysha Boie. As a local maker, she envisioned organizing a local event to celebrate local artists and build community pride. She applied for and received a St. Louis Park Arts & Culture Grant to put on the inaugural St. Louis Park Art Fair at the ROC with fiscal sponsorship from Friends of the Arts. Thanks to Alysha’s vision, leadership and management, St. Louis Park has a growing art fair, bringing the community together and celebrating local artists and makers! For more information, visit www.slpfota.org/artfair.

Gift of Music The Gift of Music program, in partnership with the St. Louis Park Community Band, provides musical instruments to students in St. Louis Park schools to participate in band or orchestra. We collect donated instruments, clean and repair them, and place them into the hands of students in need. To date, more than 750 students have received their very own instrument through this program. Learn more or donate an instrument at www.slpfota.org/giftofmusic.

Arts & Culture Grants Each year, grants are awarded to individuals or organizations for arts and culture projects that support community pride, connect artists and the community, and engage people in creative learning. Artists, arts organizations, students, community and neighborhood groups, and cultural and religious organizations are encouraged to apply. Application deadline is in September for projects to occur the following year. Learn more and apply at www.slpfota.org/artsandculture.

Fiscal sponsorship Friends of the Arts provides fiscal sponsorship and support for informal and unincorporated arts groups and projects so they can receive grants and tax-deductible donations, and focus their time and energy on the art. If you have a creative idea you’d like to bring to St. Louis Park, visit www.slpfota.org/fiscalsponsorship to schedule a consultation. Friends of the Arts has been a fiscal sponsor for past and present groups, which include the Community Band, Maggie’s Farm Theater, St. Louis Park Art Fair, Community Storytelling Forum and Historic Walker Lake Placemaking Committee.

Beautify St. Louis Park Help beautify St. Louis Park by picking up litter and debris from a local park or street! This is a great activity for individuals and groups of all ages and can be done on your own time. Use your own bags and gloves, and volunteers can leave their bags in the garbage cans located at each park. If bags are too large for trash cans, email Laura Smith at lsmith@stlouisparkmn.gov. Volunteers are invited to post their pictures on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and tag the City of St. Louis Park (@stlouispark)!

Senior Community Services volunteer Volunteers are a valuable addition and allow Senior Community Services to serve more participants in their Home & Outdoor Maintenance (HOME) program. Volunteers tackle outdoor chores as the leaves start to change, clear ice and snow when the flakes begin to fly and help with an expanding technology Support Program. For more information or to volunteer, visit seniorcommunity.org. Email reimagineaging@seniorcommunity.org or call 952.541.1019 with questions. Senior Community Services is a nonprofit organization with a mission to innovate and deliver services that meet the changing needs of older adults and their caregivers.

Be a hydrant hero Protect your family and neighbors when seconds count by volunteering to be a hydrant hero!
