Activities, Sports & Games

Years 7 to 13

Essential Information About This Handbook

The purpose of this brochure is to showcase the many cocurricular activities which are available to pupils in Years 7-13 at St Leonards. These activities range from debating, and chess, through choirs and ensembles to the more physical sports and games. Drama, too, plays an important part in our co-curriculum with the opportunity for all ages to take part in large-scale productions, both on site and performed to a public audience at the neighbouring Byre Theatre.

Games lessons are compulsory for pupils in all year groups. For Sixth Form pupils enrolled on the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, these lessons count towards the ‘Activity’ strand of their CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) requirements. Further information on CAS and Service Learning can be found in the dedicated Sixth Form Curriculum Guide, covering the IBDP and the Career-related Programme.

Choosing Activities and Individual Sports

There are several factors to take into account when choosing activities. The majority of co-curricular opportunities at St Leonards are included in the school fees, however where a specialist external provider is required, there may be an additional charge. This may take the form of a termly fee or be a pay-as-you-go cost, for example, a one-off skiing activity.

This brochure is intended to give a flavour of our vibrant and varied co-curriculum at St Leonards. The activities timetable changes on a termly basis, in order to offer as many options as possible to pupils. Please note, core activities such as music, art, drama and sport will run throughout the school year.

Although it is not compulsory for pupils to remain in school for after-school activities (4.30-5.30pm), we strongly believe in the value of a well-rounded education at St Leonards - we are educating the whole person.

In Years 7 to 11, it is recommended that pupils pursue a balanced variety of activities across music, sport, practical skills, and intellectual pursuits. Pupils in Years 7-9 must attend a minimum of two activities per week, one active and one creative, as part of the IB Middle Years Programme. Students in the Sixth Form usually prefer to concentrate on a narrower range of activities, and their participation in the activities programme helps them fulfil the CAS section of their Diploma or the Service Learning section of the Career-related Programme.

Boarders are expected to attend at least four After-school Activities/ Supervised Prep Sessions each week, and these must be agreed with the Housemaster/Housemistress in advance.

The activities timetables are shared with parents via the Engage Parent Portal. Pupils then select their activities for the term during Tutor Time in the first week of school. Completed activities forms must be signed by both pupil and parent (Housemaster/Housemistress for boarders). This constitutes written permission for the pupils to participate in the chosen activities.

Music at St Leonards

Just over 20 instrumental and vocal teachers work in the Music School at St Leonards, covering between them all the usual orchestral, jazz and pop instruments. Our teachers are expert performers in their own right and have a superb record of bringing out the best in our young musicians.

If you already have singing or instrumental lessons, our teachers will prepare you for exams, encourage you to perform in concerts, and to join one of our many ensembles. If you do not already play or sing, why not give music lessons a try? There is a huge pleasure to be had in playing an instrument or singing –and the skills learned in practising and performing will enhance all your other educational and life skills.

Ensemble playing is central to our music programme and instrumental groups and choirs rehearse throughout the week, usually during lunchtime (1.25pm – 1.55pm) or in Activity Time after school. There is an expectation that musicians will join ensembles when their teachers say they are ready.

Please note, all musical groups and activities require a threeterm commitment. The Music School can also be used for private practice, either during Activity Time or at other times outside school hours. Priority for private practice goes to pupils who take their lessons in the Music School.

Only one person should be in a practice room at a time unless special permission has been given.

We are proud to stage concerts most weeks during term time, providing frequent opportunities to perform, and we expect our pupils to make the most of these. Concerts vary from relaxed, informal events for younger musicians to grander performances by experienced and expert pupils. Family and friends are always welcome to attend.

Drama at St Leonards

At St Leonards, Drama plays an integral role in both the creative and academic lives of our pupils. The school stages four productions annually, some led by the top thespians - the St Leonards Players - while others feature whole year groups or sections of the school. Performances take place either in the School Hall or at the prestigious Byre Theatre in St Andrews, providing pupils with the unique opportunity to perform in a professional theatre setting. Recent productions include Bugsy Malone and Sluiced, an original play written by our Director of Drama.

Sixth Form and Year 11 Drama

For Year 11 and Sixth Form pupils, Drama activities take place on a Wednesday evening during Activity Time. Auditions for the production take place at the beginning of the academic year, and students are required to commit for the Autumn and Spring Terms. Pupils can work backstage as part of the technical team or perform as a member of the cast. As the production approaches, additional rehearsals may be scheduled. Involvement in these productions may contribute to the Creativity or Service strands of the CAS component of the IB Diploma.

Senior School Drama – Years 7 to 10

Drama activities for Years 7 to 10 run throughout the academic year, and pupils wishing to participate in the school production must commit for the entirety of the year. Auditions are held at

the beginning of the academic year, with opportunities for pupils to take leading roles. Pupils are also given the opportunity to work backstage as part of the technical team - handling stage management, lighting, sound, costume, or make-up - or perform as a member of the cast. All pupils are guaranteed a role, either on stage or behind the scenes.

Additional Information

Participation in school productions does not require prior experience. Pupils are encouraged to fully commit to the project and attend all rehearsals. The Drama department fosters an environment where all students can develop their theatrical skills, whether performing or working backstage.

Pupils are advised to wear appropriate drama attire (‘blacks’), which includes long/short sleeve T-shirts and black dance trousers, leggings, or tracksuit bottoms. These can also be used for drama examinations and classes. There is a small cost associated with this activity, as students are expected to purchase their own copy of the script for each production.

Sports, Games and Activities at St Leonards

Sport has always been an integral part of life at St Leonards. Our first Headmistress, Dame Louisa Lumsden (1877-1882), believed in the power of sport and physical activity in shaping the character and development of her students. To this day, St Leonards continues to uphold this strong sporting tradition, and has a particular reputation for excelling in lacrosse, hockey, golf, swimming, football, rugby, athletics, cricket and tennis.

Team sports at St Leonards promote values of cooperation, resilience, and teamwork, equipping pupils with essential life skills that extend far beyond the playing field. In addition to team sports, we encourage pupils to engage in individual and fitness-based activities, nurturing a well-rounded skill set that supports lifelong participation in physical activity.

Our aim is for every pupil to leave St Leonards with the skills, confidence, and passion to lead an active lifestyle, continuing their involvement in sport beyond School. We recognise the growing importance of fitness and well-being in the workplace, and strive to instil these values early, contributing to our students’ future success and happiness.

We are committed to the positive impact that sport and physical activity have on our students’ physical, mental, and social wellbeing, offering a balanced complement to academic studies and a release from the pressures of school life.

In Years 7, 8, 9 and 10, our core sports are delivered through a robust curricular games programme, supplemented by an extensive activities schedule. We take full advantage of worldclass local facilities, including the St Andrews Links, the University of St Andrews Sports Centre, local riding stables, and the St Andrews Tennis Club. Pupils also have a weekly PE lesson that introduces them to a diverse range of activities, including cross-country, swimming, fitness, gymnastics, basketball, orienteering, parkour, tchoukball, spikeball, volleyball, and dance, including traditional Scottish Country Dancing.

For students in Year 11/Pre-IB and the Sixth Form, we offer tailored opportunities to participate in individual sports, in addition to squad training. Our extensive co-curricular programme further enhances their sporting experience, allowing them to balance the demands of GCSE and International Baccalaureate studies with the pursuit of a healthy, active lifestyle. Sport remains a vital aspect of school life, with time dedicated to physical activity in the evenings and weekends, providing valuable recreation for our dedicated students.

Golf at St Leonards

St Andrews is celebrated worldwide as the Home of Golf, and at St Leonards, our pupils benefit from unparalleled golfing opportunities. Students can purchase the prestigious Links Ticket for approximately £50, granting them unlimited access to all seven St Andrews Links golf courses. Our comprehensive programme includes coaching, practice sessions and competition opportunities providing a perfect balance with academic life at St Leonards. Whether pupils are seasoned golfers or eager to try the sport for the first time, St Leonards offers a unique and unrivalled experience.

The St Leonards Golf Programme is designed to support and develop pupils of all abilities, from beginners to plus handicap golfers, across Years 1 to 13. Under the expert guidance of our Director of Golf, Fintan Bonner, and a team of PGA Professionals at the state-of-the-art St Andrews Links Golf Academy, pupils are nurtured through a structured progression pathway. Our access to the courses is unmatched by any other school in the UK, from the 9-hole Balgove Course to the iconic Old and Castle Courses, ensuring that every golfer can find a place to thrive.

For more information on the St Leonards Golf Programme, please refer to our dedicated brochure.

The core aim of our Sports Department is to provide every pupil with the opportunity to engage in sport and physical activity, while fostering a positive mindset towards the lifelong benefits of an active lifestyle. We aspire to offer outstanding experiences within our School programme and connect our pupils with established community links to offer sporting opportunities that extend beyond the School’s provision. We believe that fitness and wellbeing are essential life skills that contribute to the holistic development of each student, enhancing academic performance, focus, and resilience.

At St Leonards, we are dedicated to supporting our aspiring student-athletes, helping them to excel both in their studies and in the sports they are passionate about. Our goal is to maximise sporting opportunities for all, nurturing a culture of participation, personal growth, and enjoyment.

School Team Commitments

Members of school teams are expected to make every effort to attend team practice sessions. School Captains of each sport are involved in team training. Students who wish to participate in a sport should make their interest known to a member of staff. Information will be shared with students during Games lessons, the Activities Fair, Sports Assemblies and by responding to Tutor Time notices.

Fixtures will be arranged throughout the school year on weekdays and weekends, both at home and away. Parents are very welcome to watch and support these games - all fixtures are listed on our dedicated sports website: sport.stleonards-fife.org

Sports Colours

Sports Colours are awarded at the end of each term to team players who have represented St Leonards in school fixtures and have fulfilled 75% of the fixtures played. This is a celebration of team and individual sporting achievements across the year. We also acknowledge pupil successes outside school, including at national level. A special three-team badge, for pupils representing the school in three different sports at first-team level, is presented by the Director of Sport.

Senior and Sixth Form Activities

St Leonards offers a wide and incredibly varied range of activities to encourage pupils to develop new interests, and pursue existing passions, wherever they may lie.

Pupils are given the opportunity to choose/change their activities for the Spring and Summer Term at the end of the previous term.

There is no extra charge for an activity unless so indicated.

Please note that insufficient numbers may mean that an activity does not run. All activities are subject to change.

Amnesty International

The St Leonards Amnesty Youth Group actively explores instances where the rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are threatened or denied, whether locally, nationally, or internationally. The group engages in raising awareness, organising impactful campaigns, and advocating for change through fundraising, letter-writing, and petitions.

Aquathlon (*)

We are pleased to offer Aquathlon held in our 25m indoor heated swimming pool at St Leonards and led by the East Fife Triathlon Club. Aquathlon is a multisport race consisting of run and swim elements over various distances. Pupils participating in Aquathlon will require an East Fife Triathlon Club membership.

Art

Art activities run throughout the week, including Art Club, Art Factory, and a dedicated workshop for GCSE Art students. These sessions provide opportunities for artistic exploration and expression, offering pupils a space to further develop their curricular art projects or discuss techniques and media with staff. A small additional charge applies for students who choose Art as an activity but do not study it as an academic subject, to cover material costs.

Basketball Club

During Basketball Club, players will develop team and individual skills through games in the Senior School Gym. Fixtures include matches against local schools, with exciting plans to expand the basketball fixture list in the future.

British Sign Language

This activity offers pupils the opportunity to expand their vocabulary in British Sign Language (BSL) through engaging and interactive activities. In addition to developing practical signing skills, students will also gain valuable insights into Deaf culture, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Deaf community.

Chemistry Olympiad Club

The British Chemistry Olympiad is an exciting and prestigious competition designed for Year 12 and 13 pupils. Participants tackle a series of challenging questions, with the opportunity to earn certificates and potentially secure a place on the British Chemistry Olympiad Team. In this club, pupils work through past Olympiad questions, honing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills in chemistry, all while preparing for the competition.

Climbing Club (*)

Climbing Club is led by one of our teachers, who is highly trained and experienced in the field. The group climb at AVertical World in Dundee, a short drive from St Leonards. In the Summer Term, pupils take their learning outdoors, putting their skills to the test on real rock surfaces. Please note, there is an additional cost for this activity to cover transport and instruction. Numbers are limited.

Coding Club

Coding Club teaches pupils a core skill for today’s ever-changing world. Coding boosts problem-solving skills and brings in other soft skills such as creativity, emotional intelligence, research, teamwork and decision-making. Some of our pupils have developed apps, including a dedicated timetabling app to help fellow students to balance their academic studies, co-curricular activities and all-important ‘downtime’.

Cooking Club (*)

Cooking Club transports pupils from the sanctuary of the boarding house kitchen to explore cuisines from around the world. From Italy to India they take their spatulas on a tour of the pan. Love Pasta Arrabbiata? Adore cooking with your friends? This club is a relaxed, fun way to explore food; with all ingredients supplied.

Creative Writing Club

Creative Writing Club is open to anyone who is interested in creative writing. Whether you are interested in poetry, plays, short stories and other prose, or generally in generating ideas, you are very welcome. The activity takes the form you want it to –it is a friendly, supportive group, not a lesson!

If you want to use that hour to work on something you are writing, it is a time within a busy week which you can take out for that purpose, with other interested parties on hand to help. If you feel you want to develop your style, you can do that too, and we can offer workshop-style exercises to inspire you. Everyone is welcome!

A number of creative writers at St Leonards have won awards for their submissions, and been published nationally. It is an area of great strength in our school community.

Cricket

Cricket at St Leonards is a fun and energetic lunchtime activity open to all pupils in Years 7 to 13. The club focuses on developing skills for players of all abilities through engaging gameplay. Whether you are looking to enjoy the sport casually or aspiring to follow in the footsteps of cricket legends, these sessions provide the perfect balance of enjoyment and challenge for everyone involved.

Crime Club

Crime Club brings pupils together to investigate a real unsolved crime by looking at witness testimony, crime scene evidence and the circumstances surrounding the crime. Pupils become the investigators and use their understanding of psychology to profile potential suspects, consider all the evidence, and are introduced to a variety of skills to help hunt down the criminal. Students then have a chance to act out a courtroom scenario, where all their investigative work will be put into evidence and they will either have to argue for the defence or the prosecution. Crime Club is one of our most popular activities, with members regularly welcoming guests from the Dundee Law School and other institutions.

Debating Club

Do you want to rule the world or just get the point over to your parents and peer group? Come and gain the key advantage by learning the art of debating! Staff are on hand to help pupils learn the rules of debating in a friendly, yet still formal, atmosphere. Discussion, argument and fun every week, and if you join the Competitions Squad, there will be outings to events all over Scotland to compete with other societies, both at school and university level. Recent successes include first place for St Leonards at the Edinburgh Schools’ Debating Competition.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a voluntary, non-competitive personal development programme of activities. Completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award gives young people the opportunity to experience new activities or develop existing skills.

There are three progressive levels of programmes which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. Young people create their own Duke of Edinburgh programme by choosing a volunteering, physical and skills activity and planning, training and completing a self-sufficient expedition.

The Duke of Edinburgh is all about going the extra mile – gaining new skills, pushing yourself physically, helping others and exploring new territories. At the same time, pupils will gather friendships, experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. Furthermore, participants’ personal attributes developed through participation are recognised by employers, colleges and universities all over the world.

Eco Club

An opportunity to tackle issues within our school community that have an impact on the environment. In the past the group has looked at ways to reduce the food waste left over at school lunches. Future projects will be decided by members of the club.

Embrace Mindfulness

The Embrace Mindfulness activity is designed to help students find peace amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Each week, students receive a card with fresh tips and activities aimed at nurturing their well-being. Additionally, they are given a personal jotter - a diary where they can write down their thoughts, express their feelings, and reflect on how these mindfulness techniques are helping them.

These simple exercises encourage students to take a break from their busy routines and discover what works best for them during stressful times. During break times, they can immerse themselves in calming activities like drawing, painting, mindful breathing, and gentle yoga movements - all carefully chosen to promote relaxation and focus.

But the journey does not end there! Students are also invited to share their experiences, discuss the benefits, and reflect on how these practices positively impact their lives. Embrace Mindfulness is not just an activity, it is a supportive community that fosters a healthier, more balanced way of living.

Film Club

Film Club is a fantastic opportunity to relax with friends while exploring thought-provoking and meaningful films. The club provides a space for students to unwind and enjoy quality cinema, with films that cover a range of important themes such as resilience, overcoming adversity, and historical events.

Football

Football is open to all pupils (girls and boys), as part of the activities programme, offering both informal and competitive opportunities. For those simply wishing to enjoy the game, most sessions are relaxed and fun, with highlights such as the annual staff vs students match, which always attracts an enthusiastic crowd of supporters.

For pupils interested in representing St Leonards in fixtures, football can also be treated as squad training. Competitive players are expected to commit to the team, and regular matches are played against other Scottish schools.

Geology Rocks

Geology is the study of Earth - a branch of natural science concerned with the rocks of which our planet is composed. Our young geologists share an interest in learning more about modern geology and exploring our fascinating coastline and surroundings in St Andrews.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics takes place in the gymnasium at St Leonards, with pupils working on strength, balance, flexibility, agility, coordination and endurance. Some pupils also compete with outside clubs at a regional and national level.

Horse Riding

Hockey

Squads for both boys’ and girls’ hockey are offered throughout the Autumn and Spring Terms. All players wishing to represent St Leonards must attend. Players of all abilities are welcome, with teams playing regular fixtures against other Scottish schools and clubs, as well as competing in local and regional leagues. Hockey sessions are also a lot of fun, especially our Festive Hockey Festival, which takes place towards the end of the Autumn Term!

St Leonards works in partnership with Edenside Riding Stables, which is located just outside St Andrews, approximately a 5 to 10-minute drive from the school. Horse riding is available as an after-school activity on a weekly basis, with a focus on group lessons covering a range of disciplines. Riding is also offered as a Senior Games option for boys and girls. Individual lessons can be arranged, and livery is available by arrangement with Edenside.

Some of our more experienced riders use Drumcarrow Equestrian, which is the home of Lohoar Sport Horses and is situated just two miles from St Andrews, for lessons and livery.

Lacrosse

All players wishing to represent St Leonards in lacrosse must attend the after-school practice sessions. These sessions are designed to develop both individual skills and team dynamics, ensuring players are fully prepared for competitive matches.

Competitive matches are played against other schools and university teams, offering a variety of challenging opportunities to test and enhance their skills. St Leonards has a proud tradition of producing top-level lacrosse players, many of whom have gone on to represent Scotland at the national level.

Latin Club

Latin Club is led by the Classics Department at St Leonards and aims to instil in pupils a love for the ancient language, supporting curricular learning and offering additional opportunities to explore the culture of Ancient Rome.

Mandarin Club

Mandarin Club is for beginners, giving pupils a chance to learn a new language from scratch, with the help of some of our native speakers. Pupils learn pronunciation, everyday conversation, basic Chinese grammar, characters and Chinese culture. Sessions cover Pinyin, Chinese radicals, greetings, names, numbers, dates, likes and dislikes.

Model United Nations (MUN) (*)

Do you enjoy political debate? Are you worried about human rights and the environment? Then this could be the activity for you. Model United Nations Club meets once a week (together with Debating Club) to prepare for regional and global conferences. There is no weekly cost, although there is an additional charge for delegates attending conferences. Model United Nations is a hugely popular activity, with delegates representing countries from around the world and attending an annual MUN Conference. Most recently, this took the form of a trip to Athens, where St Leonards pupils won three awards for Best Delegate and one Highly Commended!

Netball

Netball is a dynamic and enjoyable team sport that complements the core sports at St Leonards. Players train and compete in a supportive environment, with sessions held indoors. It is a great way for pupils to develop skills, teamwork, and stay active.

Psychology Club

Psychology is one of the most popular academic subjects in the Sixth Form at St Leonards, and our dedicated club supports students to explore Psychology further outside a classroom setting. Pupils do not need to be studying the subject in their timetable – anyone with an interest is welcome to join! It really is a fascinating weekly session, brought to life by our Teacher of Psychology through group discussions and activities.

Rifle Shooting (*)

The Rifle Shooting activity takes place each week, with sessions and coaching at the nearby St Andrews Rifle Club. The St Leonards Rifle Club has achieved great success at a national level, including first place in the third division of the British Schools Small-bore Rifle Association Summer League.

Roller Skating Club

Roller Skating Club offers a fun and inclusive space for students to enjoy skating, whether they are beginners or experienced skaters. During the winter months, the club stays active by running through well-lit areas of the town. Led by a dedicated team of staff, the club welcomes runners of all abilities.

Rugby

Since August 2017, the St Leonards squads have trained alongside Madras Rugby Club teams, thanks to a superb community youth sports partnership. Together, they are the St LeonardsMadras (SLM) Blues. Training sessions are held in school during specified Activity Time, and for squad players, also at Madras Rugby Club’s Station Park grounds in St Andrews. There are opportunities for boys to train as a team in preparation for fixtures, and any pupil wishing to represent the school in the U13, U14, U15, U16 and U18 squads must choose these sessions.

Spanish Games Club

Spanish Games Club offers a fun and interactive way for students to learn and practise Spanish through engaging board games.

From ‘Who is Who?’ (¿Quién es quién?) for practising descriptions and vocabulary, to memory games that enhance language retention, pupils can enjoy a range of activities. Participation boosts confidence, strengthens higher education applications, and provides insights into the links between education and industry.

STEP (St Leonards Enterprise Programme) (Year 12)

The St Leonards Enterprise Programme gives pupils invaluable experience in setting up and running a company. A meeting is held on one evening a week for planning and administration, and additional time during the week is involved in marketing, production, and sales. ‘Advisers’ oversee the company; successful achievers receive a certificate and are able to take the external Young Enterprise reflective assessment set by the University of Strathclyde. The only costs involved are for transport to and from occasional meetings of the Fife Young Enterprise groups in Glenrothes or Dundee, and a small charge for the Young Enterprise reflective assessment.

It is a fantastic way to boost fitness and kickstart your morning, offering the perfect mix of challenge and fun. There is no better way to begin the day!

Swimming

Our 25m pool is ideal for swim training and competitive use. Join a training squad during Activity Time or go for a recreational swim during Senior Games. Swimming is taught by the PE Department.

Tennis

Training sessions will be held in school during specified Activity Time for team players. For advanced tennis players, please liaise with the school directly as it may be possible to arrange additional individual coaching at the University of St Andrews Sports Centre, at an extra cost.

Ultimate Frisbee

Yoga Club

Yoga offers a perfect way to reduce stress, tone muscles, detox, and keep your spine flexible. Beyond the physical benefits, it helps you reconnect with yourself, providing a welcome break after a long week of studying.
