Greetings to all our Saints Alumni!
Blue Out Day!
DearSLCSAlumni,
SPRING 2019
We are coming to the end of another successful year at St. Laurence Catholic School. I hope that you have been blessed since we last connected and feel the prayers lifted on your behalf in our daily intentions. Our theme this year is Give New Signs and Work New Wonders, based on Sirach 36:6. We saw plenty of great signs and wonders fromGodthisyear, startingwithreceivingourthirdNational Blue Ribbon Award for academic achievement from the United States Department of Education. This special recognition was thanks to the hard work of our students and teachers and we are especially proud that it was earned with standardized test scores taken directly after thepandemic.
Some new things on campus this year ranged from added security with police officers during school hours to our beautiful new CEO Lounge and Classroom gifted to us by the CEO Foundation. We are in the process of upgrading our intercom/alarm and bell schedule system, purchasing a new cloud-based phone system and renovating several bathrooms. These projects will streamline scheduling across grade levels, add safety features necessary during a crisis and keep our buildings in good condition for the foreseeable future. We also saw the return of an enrichment pull-out programforqualifiedstudentsandcompetedinourfirstAcademicDecathlonthisspring.
I hope that you enjoy looking through the Saints Scoop and catching up on all things SLCS. We are always so proud to hear of the many accomplishments of our alumni and hope that you will always consider Saint Laurence Catholic School your home. You are welcome to visit and catch up with us anytime. ThankyouforstayingconnectedandpleaseconsiderjoiningusforourAnnualAlumniMass on Friday, May 24, 2024 if you are available. We would love to hear of the new signs and wonders youhavebeenexperiencingsincewelastsawyou.

I have had the honor of serving as the President of the Advisory School Council for the 2023-2024 school year. I would like to reflect onsomeofthemanyaccomplishmentsSLCShasachievedthisyear.
I am thrilled to share some exciting news that fills me with immense pride and joy. SLCS has been honored with the prestigious National Blue Ribbon Award! This is the third time SLCS has won, and is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our incredible students, teachers, staff, and supportive community, including esteemed alumni like yourself who have contributed to the rich tapestry of our school's history.
In addition to this momentous achievement, SLCS was voted one of the Best Private Schools in Fort Bend for the fifth straight year. Also, the St. Laurence Catholic School Board received the Outstanding School Board Award from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in 2019. Most recently our accreditation has been recertified, for a period of seven years, by the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops EducationDepartment.
We continue to accomplish great things in the areas of academic excellence, technology, community involvement, clubs, extracurricular activities and athletics. Our students and families continue to be engaged in our parish and our diverse local communities. This year, the CEO Foundation opened a Commemorative Classroom and Lounge in honor of the beautiful student souls lost a few years ago. Our fundraising efforts continue to set new records with the creation this year of our Saints and Angels Annual Fund. Lastly, our endowment supporting tuition assistance continues to provide support tofamiliesatSLCS.
Of course, Catholic identity and service remain embedded throughout the SLCS experience. Students are taught to serve others with an emphasis on character and a loving heart. PRINCIPAL Jean Bauer
My name is Jean Bauer and I have had the honor and privilege of working at St. Laurence Catholic School for 26 years. I started at St. Laurence as a kindergarten teacher, then moved into 2nd grade, and currently I serve the school as a reading specialist for the lower grade students.
As a member of both St. Laurence school and parish, it is easy to say that the heart and spirit of St. Laurence runs through my veins. It is family. It is a place where my faith is nurtured and strengthened; where I find opportunities to serve others in the simple ways God has called me to serve Him.
Even as early as third grade, I knew that my calling was to become a teacher. It was as clear as knowing my own name. I walked into my first 1st grade classroom at the age of twenty-one. Throughout the years, I've been blessed to walk with incredible mentors, talented colleagues, and dear children who have enriched and brought tremendous joy to the journey. Being recognized as a recipient of the Sally Landram Award is truly humbling, as it represents and reflects the dedication of countless colleagues who pour their hearts, love and talents into the lives of the children entrusted to us by the Lord. The colleagues that I have been blessed to work with over the years at St. Laurence are the finest, faith-filled, holiest, people I will ever know…saints in the making, for sure.
Knowing that you work and have worked side-by-side with some of the finest educators is a blessing, to be clear, but hearing the name of a former student being announced to receive the Sally LandramAward is beyond happiness.
Grace was part of our “kindergarten kingdom” my very first year at St. Laurence. I remember her so well. Her smile brightened every corner of the room. She possessed a quiet gentleness that delicately enveloped her determination to be a diligent little worker… to share and think of others first… to give her heart… to learn and grow in grace. I could not have been prouder of Grace when they announced her name as the Sally Landram Award recipient in 2019. As they listed all of her accomplishments and the way she joyfully and selflessly served her school, my heart became fuller and fuller. I kept thinking, “That’s sounds like Grace. Yep, that sounds just like Grace.” Every grace bestowed upon her by God was channeled into serving others, with the ultimate devotion directed towards serving Him.
Teachers absolutely love seeing their former students out in the world: doing God’s good works, being His hands and feet, and being humbly courageous as they willingly and trustingly say “Yes” to how and where God is leading them. Please never think that what you’re doing isn’t significant or big enough to share. You are already important to us, nestled within our hearts and lifted up in our prayers. You are an integral part of our family…Once a Saint,Always a Saint.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR Grace Kwong ‘05
My name is Grace Kwong (Cheung) and I am a proud Saint Alumna, Class of 2005. I started attending SLCS in Kindergarten when my family moved to Sugar Land in 1996. I graduated Salutatorian of SLCS in 2005, attended St. Agnes for my freshman year, and due to financial reasons, finished high school at Clements High School, graduating in the top 5% of my class in 2013.Although I was enrolled and ready to start my freshman year of college at UTAustin, I heard a call from God telling me to go to the University of St. Thomas instead. Now in hindsight, I can see that God put that in my heart because it allowed me to continue being formed at a Catholic university to serve in Catholic education. Furthermore, being in Houston meant that I could continue to serve at my home parish,Ascension Chinese Mission, where I was called to restart and revive the Youth Ministry Program during my college years alongside who would become my future husband.
I really looked up to my teachers in my younger years and was inspired early on to follow in their footsteps. I'm passionate about education today because I get to play an active and direct role in helping children become disciples of JesusAND productive citizens in our society.
I was surprised and humbled to learn that I received the Sally Landram Award. It was even more memorable because I had just given birth to my firstborn right before the Convocation Mass, so my principal had recorded the presentation of the award for me to watch back later. I can only attribute this honor to God calling me to serve Him through teaching and the award affirms me in following His call.
Receiving the same award as Mrs. Bauer in different years, is a full circle moment since Mrs. Bauer was instrumental in why I have grown to the person I am today. She was my first teacher that helped instill the foundation of Catholic education in me and I'm thankful to God that the seeds she planted continued to have fertile soil to bear fruit.
I am so grateful to my parents for choosing SLCS and my teachers who made such an impact on my most formative years in education. I applied so much of my personal experiences and memories as a student to my classroom - instructional practices, student relationships, integrating our beautiful Catholic faith, and beyond.

“I am so proud and grateful for St. Laurence Catholic School and its principal, Suzanne Barto. What a beautiful faculty, administration, and about 700 students we have here. I am so blessed to be Pastor of this three-time National Blue Ribbon School. Our theme this year from Sirach is ‘Give New Signs and Work New Wonders.’ I feel that our school is one of God’s wonders.”
Dr. Debra Haney, Secretariat Director and Superintendent of Catholic Schools
“Catholic schools have a long history of academic excellence, and St. Laurence continues that legacy with this third U.S. Department of Education 2023 National Blue Ribbon Award as an Exemplary High Performing School! I could not be prouder of the students, teachers, and administrators for maintaining such excellence in achievement, even amidst the challenges that we have faced in education following a global pandemic!
St. Laurence Catholic School constantly strives to ensure that each child on their campus has their spiritual, physical, academic, and socio-emotional needs met, and more importantly, that they are prepared for Heaven! As one of only 40 non-public schools in the nation and three (3) in the great state of Texas (all Catholic in Texas and 90% Catholic nationwide) to receive this prestigious award, St. Laurence again joins the ranks among our state's highest performing schools as measured by nationally normed tests. MEET KATHLEEN CLAYTON 6th Grade English Language Arts
My name is Kathleen Clayton, and I'm truly excited about joining St. Laurence Catholic School this year as a 6th Grade English LanguageArtsTeacher. I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, where I attended Catholic schools from 1st to 12th grade. I came to Houston to attend Rice University, where I graduated with a degree in Behavioral Science. During Freshman Week at Rice University, I met my husband, Lawrence. Together, we have one daughter and five boys.
I've had diverse experiences, including time in corporate America, where I held the role of Human Resources Director. Following that, I dedicated quality time to being a stay-at-home mom before embarking on my journey in the field of Education. My desire to share my passion for learning with students led me to become a teacher.
Prior to joining St. Laurence, I spent a fulfilling decade teaching at a school in Rosenberg. Teaching is not just a profession for me; it's a calling. I find joy in the classroom and thrive on collaborating with both students and their families. Beyond education, I have a range of interests. I enjoy cooking, reading, taking walks, following college sports, and being a fan of professional tennis.
I'm looking forward to a terrific school year at St. Laurence Catholic School, where I hope to inspire and engage my students in the exciting journey of learning.
WE ARE VERY PROUD OF SR. MARIE THOMAS BUI O.P., 2ND GRADE TEACHER
Sister finished her Master's Degree inTheology with an emphasis in Catechism from Franciscan University in Ohio. She hopes to bring her students closer to God and help them explore the wonderful things God has given them in their lives. Congratulations!

My husband and I have twin daughters who attend St. Laurence Catholic School, as well as a dog named Sunnie and cat named Rosie. In my spare time, you’ll usually find me at the softball field, baking cookies, or reading. As the Middle School Counselor, my goal is to help students develop to their highest potential. This may include individual meetings with students, small group counseling, positive behavior support, community referrals, crisis intervention, and conflict mediation. In addition, I will teach guidance lessons in the classroom through the social emotional learning program “Friendzy.” SLCS began using this Catholic-based and Christ-centered program last year and we are excited to continue it due to the many resources it provides. I enjoy workingwiththestudents!

Director of Advancement
❖ Tell us about yourself!
My name is Jessica Bardin and I am the Director of Advancement for St. Laurence Catholic School. I’ve been at SLCS for a year and I’m honored to be part of the Saints community. My husband and I have 3 kids, 2 dogs, and 1 bunny. I am a proud TexasA&MAggie (Class of 2008) who loves reading, mountains, and sloths!
❖ Can you share some highlights of your journey leading up to your current role?
Before working at SLCS, I served as the Regional Director for the ALS Association of Texas until becoming a stay-at-home mom in 2019. I also taught Pre-K 3, which was so much fun! I feel blessed to be able to combine my love of mission-focused work with education in my role at SLCS.
❖ What inspired you to join the team at SLCS as the Director ofAdvancement?
I wasn’t INSPIRED to join SLCS so much as God told me this is where I am meant to be! (And I’m sure glad He did!). I was teaching part-time when I felt the call to send my kids to SLCS.Around that time, I also saw the Director of Advancement job post in the church bulletin. My husband saw the listing and said, “I guess you’re going back to work full-time!” However, I loved my teaching job and didn’t feel the timing was right for me (or my family). Starting in November 2022, God began nudging me to apply. I pushed back! He nudged me again in December and I continued to push back. In January, I couldn’t ignore His nudging anymore! I finally understood it wasn’t about MYtiming, it was about HIS timing.
❖ How do you see the role of advancement contributing to the overall mission and vision of our Catholic school?
The Advancement department is 110% about the mission, 110% of the time! I say this prayer every morning when I get to work:
“Many have been called for this work, Lord. Few are chosen. I realize the important ministry of school advancement can be both fulfilling and challenging.
Help me to remember that advancement isn’t ‘fundraising,’but rather a way to involve people in our school. My goal in advancement is to build a sense of spiritual bonding, community, friendship, and commitment.A result of achieving my goal will be financial support.
Help me overcome the notion that advancement is simply ‘asking for money.’ Help me remember that advancement actually brings people closer to You. Help me remember that advancement is not a win-lose situation, but rather a process of bringing Christ to people, and people to Christ.
Help me remember that extending myself to others and inviting them to participate in our mission is not a weakness, but a strength. Help me remember that making myself vulnerable, in order to serve others, is a gift and a blessing. Help me remember thatYou madeYourself vulnerable to save us. Please let my efforts be successful by blessing me and giving me the courage to tell our school’s story of need, our school’s story of success, and do so with boldness, conviction, commitment, and love.”
Thank you to the Institute for School and Parish Development for this wonderful Advancement prayer!

Everything I have done so far has been to further the mission, support SLCS (students, staff, teachers, families), and ensure we are being good stewards of the gifts given to our school.
This past year, a Leadership Level (The Circle of Saints) was added to the Saints &AngelsAnnual Fund. It is a new way for our supporters to be properly recognized. The goal was to have 15 families in the Circle of Saints; as of January 2024, there are 41 families! This goes to show that the Saints community understands the importance of giving - giving of time, giving of talent, and giving of treasure. SLCS is truly blessed!
Additionally, a Corporate Sponsor program was incorporated for the 2023-2024 school year. Six amazing sponsors joined the program and supported SLCS in this new and important way. Many thanks to Scorpion Oil & Gas, CEO Foundation, Keeper’s Japanese Restaurant & Bar, CKW LUXE, Chiang Law Firm, and Christopher Meyer Law Firm for their support of SLCS this year!
❖ Can you share a particularly rewarding experience or success story from your time working in advancement at SLCS?
Every single day for the past year has been rewarding and successful in its own way. Learning the ins and outs of SLCS, meeting the wonderful people in our school community, working with the most amazing staff, and seeing the mission come to life every day through the students - there aren’t words to describe how blessed I feel to be part of this amazing team.
There is one experience that pops into mind, though. During the kick-off of the Saints & Angels Annual Fund, I was feeling overwhelmed and quite nervous (this was my first time to ever do an annual fund!). Working at a parochial school is amazing for many reasons, but one of the best is having access to prayer and adoration at all times! After spending time in the adoration chapel, my fears were eased, my burden felt lighter, and I was able to remember that God is in charge! TheAnnual Fund appeal broke participation AND fundraising records this year, all thanks to God and the incredible stewards He placed in our Saints community!
❖ Lastly, what message would you like to share with our alumni community about the importance of their continued involvement and support for our school's mission?
Once a Saint, Always a Saint! Just because alumni have graduated, that does not mean they are forgotten! SLCS alumni are always in our thoughts, our prayers, and in all we do to further the mission of our school. It is important to stay involved (through volunteering, prayers, sharing life updates, etc.) because SLCS will always be home and the Saints will always be family. Many alumni are coming back to SLCS to work, and some are now sending their own kids to SLCS!

WHAT IS THE SAINTS &ANGELSANNUALFUND?
The Saints &AngelsAnnual Fund was established in 1992 as a way to bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating our students.Tuition revenues do not cover the entire operating budget of the school, and theAnnual Fund is an important part of helping SLCS fulfill its mission of educating our students in mind, body, and spirit.
The annual cost to educate a student is $10,288, while the average yearly tuition cost is $9,064.TheAnnual Fund makes up that crucial difference and helps us achieve excellence in education.
DOES MYGIFT REALLYMATTER?
YES! Every gift, regardless of size, is important because it shows support for SLCS.Your gift is an expression of confidence in our school and assists in maintaining the quality and affordability of a St. Laurence Catholic School education.
HOWARE THESE FUNDS USED?
Gifts to theAnnual Fund contribute to the school’s operating budget.Your generous donations support SLCS in many ways by allowing us to:
○ Recruit and retain the highest quality teachers and staff
○ Offer professional development opportunities to our staff
○ Upgrade technology and equipment as needed
○ Maintain and improve our facilities

CEO Library and Lab
OnTuesday, September 26th, 2023. we celebrated the dedication of our new CEO Commemorative Library and Lab, which was generously gifted to our school by the CEO Foundation in remembrance of our little saints in heaven, Olivia, Edison and Colette Nguyen. We are very honored to receive this beautiful space and look forward to the creative ideas that will come from our students working in this newly renovated area above the library. Classes have already been enjoying the flexible seating and bright color scheme, which will always remind us of our sweet Nguyen children, our Eternal SLCS Saints!
CEO FOUNDATION
The CEO Foundation was created as a living legacy for Jackie Pham’s children, our beloved forever SLCS Saints. CEO stands for Colette, Edison and Olivia, and embodies the spirit of leadership their mother sees in them. “Our mission is to ‘empower the next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers.’ We aim to do this through philanthropic initiatives that focus on education and arts, health and wellness, and environmental and social impact among our youth - all in memory of Colette, Edison and Olivia. SLCS touched the lives of Colette, Edison, and Olivia in a very special way, and the CEO Foundation is proud to continue our support of the SLCS community for years to come.”

“It’s my way of giving back and saying to all my former teachers -Thank you for teaching, guiding, and encouraging me to reach my full potential.”
Since 1997, Southwest’s Adopt-a-Pilot Program has inspired thousands of students to explore careers in aviation through fun, STEM-centered activities. This program connects pilots with classrooms across the country to provide mentorship and engage students in lessons, sparking their career interest.
Bradley Burgess (SLCS Class of 2013) is a First Officer for SouthwestAirlines. When he began working for Southwest in 2023, he learned about the Adopt-a-Pilot program. He knew which school he wanted to reach out to—St. Laurence Catholic School. He contacted Mrs. Barto and Mrs. Gomez about the program, and they responded with an excitedYES!
Second graders at SLCS have adopted First Officer Bradley Burgess for the 2023-2024 school year. He will visit the second-grade classrooms four times this year to teach various lessons, including math, science, and geography while helping students further develop life skills and values. Bradley is excited to give back to his elementary school, a place where he learned the importance of service and giving to others.

Sarah Chovanetz ‘02
DearSaintsAlumni,
SPRING 2019
Nearly three decades have passed since I first stepped through the doors of St. Laurence as a Pre-K student. Today, my faith in Jesus and my zest for life burn brighter than ever. As a founding student who attended St. Laurence from 1992 to2002,Ishareaspecialbondwiththisinstitution.Andit’snot just me - my mom has dedicated over 25 years to working at SLCS.Clearly,we’reaproudfoundingfamily!
Back then, I immersed myself in every sport, discovered a love for competitive dance and cheerleading, and eventually traded pom-poms for legal briefs at a law firm. But life had other plans. A surprise detour into sales within the recruiting industry led me to where I stand today: successful, surrounded by incredible friends and family, and proudly a “dog and cat mom” to Pearl and Princess Fiona. And my worldly travels have exposed me to diverse cultures and traditions, enriching my perspective. After all these years, I’ve learned not to take anything for granted and to savor every momentofthejourney.
To the current St. Laurence students, I offer this advice: Dream big! Your life can be anything you envision. Hold fast to your faith, trust in yourself, and never abandon your dreams. God will be your unwavering guiding light, just as He has been mine. Whether you aspire to be like me in a leadership role, create a loving family, or even go on a lunar adventure, remember that you are never alone. Pray as naturally as you breathe, knowing that with every step, God walks beside you. And from the sidelines, I’m cheering you on.
Life is a precious gift, and the seeds planted at St. Laurence have nurtured me into the strong, driven woman I am today. So, remember: “Once a Saint, Always a Saint.” May God’s abundantblessingsbeuponyouall!
