Message from the chair Thank you for Coming Together for Diabetes to support diabetes research on the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin.

More than 3 million Canadians live with diabetes, and about 10% of them have insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes like our featured speaker Kaleb Dahlgren. Kaleb, a survivor of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash, shares his story of tragedy, healing and resiliency as a way to inspire all of us to face our own life-altering obstacles.

DIABETES care and research More than 20 Canadians are diagnosed with a type of diabetes every hour.

The chances are high it already affects you or someone you know.

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Before the discovery of insulin in 1921, people with type 1 diabetes suffered devastating complications, wasted away and died.

Using insulin as a treatment gave people life, but it’s not a cure.

WHY RESEARCH MATTERS HERE Over the last 100 years, medical research has made huge strides to improve insulin therapy and delivery, and to create new classes of drugs that help people maintain blood glucose levels within the normal range and avoid diabetic complications. Because not all worthy research receives government funding, it’s critical that donors step up to support the work underway in laboratories and clinics at St. Joseph’s and Lawson Health Research Institute.

St. Joseph’s is home to one of Canada’s largest diabetes clinical education centres, and our diabetes research program is exploring better treatments, tools and the real possibility of finding a cure. Patients can participate in clinical trials that directly impact care for thousands of people who haven’t yet been diagnosed.
