Pastor’s Message,
Looking Backward as We Look Forward to Christmas As the year 2009 draws to a close, we would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone in our faith community for their spirit of cooperation, mutual encouragement and fine efforts throughout the year. This is an opportune moment to thank God for all the many blessings we have received. It is also a time to reflect upon our identity and goals as a community. Life is a continual process of rebirth. The faith we received from our childhood has never been static, but has always needed constant renewal through ever deeper soundings and openness to ever widening horizons. Our personal knowledge of God’s love is an ongoing awakening that needs constant care. As a community united by faith and centered on worship, we are continually called to renew our participation in the mystery of the incarnation of the Son of God. Christ not only took our human flesh in order to dwell among us, but he also fashioned from us a Mystical Body to continue to incarnate his power, presence and love in this world. The fulfillment of that mission of incarnation demands our continual rebirth. If we take a moment to step back and think about the year 2009, we can begin to discern some clear indications of rebirth, not only as individuals, but also as a community. Our ministries of worship, teaching, fellowship, and charity have taken root and some small but beautiful branches and buds have appeared. As the year draws to a close, the approaching celebration of the birth of Christ gives us the opportunity to celebrate our continued rebirth and look forward to all that our Lord still has in store for us. As the Apostle Paul said, “What God has planned for people who love him is more than eyes have seen or ears have heard. It has never even entered our minds” (1 Corinthians 2:9) At this holy season, all the ministry members of the Arabic community at St. Joseph Church, Pomona, would like to wish everyone a blessed Christmas and hearts filled with peace, hope, and anticipation for the coming New Year.

As an active part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, a group from our church lead by our beloved Pastor Rev Rick Van De Water headed to the $4,118.52 cathedral of Our Lady of Angels to take part in the annual solemn Mass celebration together with more than 35 different nations from all over the world. Rev Rick $744.92 looked so sharp in Arabic folkloric dress among his parishioners who were also proud to show up in their beautiful Arabic dresses.

Cardinal Mahoney presided over the Mass, accompanied by many bishops and more than 40 priests representing the various nations participating in that great event. During this year’s celebration, Bishop Oscar Solis, the Vicar for Office of Ethnic Ministry, turned the leadership of this Ministry to Bishop Alexander Salazar after 5 years of service. Right after the Mass everybody headed to the festival celebration, during which the various participants did their best to perform wonderful folkloric music and dances. They all were dressed in very colorful folkloric attire. The food booths were also representing the various national tastes. Here it was noticeable how long the line at the Arabic booth was, where “Shawerma” and “Falafel” were served, accompanied by “Baklava” with its irresistible taste. Jacob Jouny had to ask for help to assist in serving his crowded customers.
Mother Marie Alphonsine... who is she and how she become a Blessed Many of us watched on Noursat or Telelumiere the beatification ceremony of Mother Marie Alphonsine, the founder of The Rosary Congregation. We hereby quote some of the articles written by Sister Cecile Hjazine, these articles can be found on [Abouna.Org] website of Rev Father Rif’at Bader. “Her name is Sultana, her father is Daniel Ghattas Francis Issa Ghattas, and her mother is Katherine Antoun Youssef. Her family lived in Jerusalem and was known for their righteousness and devotion to the Holy Virgin. Sultana was born on October 4th, 1843 in Jerusalem, during the month of the Rosary; she was a daughter of the Rosary and the founder of the Rosary Congregation. Sultana was among the first students who joined St. Joseph School in Jerusalem. Her father agreed that she join the congregation of St. Joseph, under a condition that she not be sent outside of the country at all. Sultana entered the novitiate on June 30th 1860 and received the habit of the congregation of St. Joseph in the Golgotha Church where she later took on her first vows. She was nominated to be a teacher in Jerusalem, and was known for her righteousness and humility. She took care of the Legion of the Immaculate Conception for young girls, and another Legion for the mothers. She was transferred to Bethlehem, where she took care of other legions of girls and their mothers. Here, she experienced the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Later, Mother Alphonsine, the founder, joined the Congregation of the Holy Rosary through the church legal channels, where her secret was not revealed until her death on the day of Feast of the Annunciation. Her spiritual counselor Father Youssef Tannous ordered her to write everything she saw during the apparitions. Just a few days before her death, she asked her sister Hanneh the Mother superior: ‘After my death, go to this place and you will find two handbooks written by me, take both of them to the Patriarch Barlassena’ (The Patriarch of Jerusalem at that time). Sister Hanneh did as she was told after her sister's death. Patriarch Barlassena did not know Arabic, so he charged Mother Augustine to translate the handbooks. Then he ordered to return the original copies to the Mother superior, who read them and the truth was revealed like the sun. Everybody recognized the humble nun, whose secret and the secret of the Virgin Mary lay hidden for long time, until her death on the day of the feast of the annunciation 1927.” The beatification ceremony took place in Nazareth on the 22nd of November 2009, presided by Patriarch Fouad Twal. Sent by the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, Bishop Angelo Amato was also present. Amato stated that the beatification is a gift from his Holiness the Pope to the Holy Lands following his historical visit last May. 7
