StJoseph’sCollege Executive Summary

At St Joseph’s College, we are a registered charity with the principal aim of advancing education for the public benefit. As an independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 2 to 19 years, we provide a nurturing environment in which students are inspired to reach their full potential intellectually, morally, spiritually, and physically and to play an active and positive role in society, offering service to local, national and global communities.

We believe in being an active and supportive member of our local community. Our campus serves as a hub for various community organisations, reflecting our commitment to fostering strong, collaborative relationships beyond the school gates. We are proud to host a diverse range of community groups and we aim to contribute to the vibrancy and wellbeing of our community, providing a welcoming environment for all.

Our partnerships extend beyond facility use. We collaborate with local schools, including those that cater to children with diverse needs, to ensure inclusive educational opportunities.

Our educational approach is guided by clear aims to meet the needs of each pupil’s mind, body, heart, and spirit. We aim for every student to play an active and positive role in College life, building leadership skills and offering service to local, national, and global communities.

The College’s total contribution to UK GDP is £16,960,914, which comprises three channels of impact, the school's own GDP; GDP supported in our UKbased supply chain and UK GDP supported by the spending of our staff, and UK-based suppliers' staff.

Allocation of scholarships to support able and talented pupils to access an independent education:

Allocation of bursaries to support social mobility for families who would not otherwise be able to access an independent education:

The College employs 191 members of the local and wider community in Teaching and Support Staff roles.

The College continues to support local business including hotels, function venues supermarkets, transport companies, leisure businesses, sports clubs, food suppliers, uniform and sports kit suppliers, restaurants, window cleaners and health and safety providers.

The planning application for residential development and new boarding accommodation at St Joseph’s College, if successful, will create significant public benefits which will include:

Delivery of 51 much-needed new homes, helping to boost the local housing supply in line with Government targets

Financial contributions towards off-site affordable housing provision in the local area

Total section 106 contributions exceeding £900,000

Substantial investment in a range of facilities and services, including education provision, including Early Years, Secondary and Sixth Form education, library improvements, NHS, waste management and open spaces

The creation of a new pedestrian and cycle connection, improving local connectivity and sustainable transport options.

Provision of new, purpose-built boarding accommodation to support pupil recruitment and the long-term viability of the College and its communitybased activities bringing wider economic benefits to the local area

Investment in the refurbishment and conversion of the Grade II* Listed Goldrood House, securing its preservation and long-term future.

Board Structure

The College and the Board of Governors are committed to high standards of corporate governance. There is an ongoing process for identifying, evaluating, and managing the potential financial, commercial, charitable, operational, social, environmental, and ethical risks for the College. The Trustees take steps to manage these risks by means of systems of controls, policies, monitoring and committees. The Governors’ sub-committee groups review key internal operational and financial controls and confirm the operating effectiveness of those to the Board of Governors.

Risk Management

At St Joseph’s College, we approach risk management with care and responsibility in all strategic decisions. Every major development undergoes a thorough assessment that considers operational, financial, and reputational risks, alongside the College’s long-term sustainability. Crucially, we prioritise the views and wellbeing of our community, both within and beyond the College. Whether it’s investing in new facilities or launching academic programmes, we actively engage stakeholders to understand local impact and explore opportunities for shared benefit. This ensures our growth remains true to our values and positively serves the wider community.

Charities Act and Public Benefit

The Trustees are aware of their responsibilities for demonstrating public benefit. The College has demonstrated and continues to demonstrate a number of areas of public benefit within its core charitable objectives. The identifiable benefits include the advancement of education and community support.

Community Impact and Social Responsibility

The College takes its responsibility to provide public benefit to the wider community seriously and has a purposeful, wide-ranging programme to achieve this. This includes offering educational opportunities to state schools across the region, sharing our campus and facilities with a diverse range of community groups, supporting local charities, clubs and organisations, and hosting events that benefit the broader community.

Sports The College’s partnership with Ipswich Town Foundation supports community participation in football, and we are proud to be an official education partner of Ipswich Town Football Club. We also sponsor local sports clubs, including Ipswich, Colchester, and Sudbury Rugby Clubs, Hadleigh Cricket Club, and Norfolk United Netball Club. Additionally, we support Paul’s Social Club by assisting with the maintenance of their facilities.

The College organises competitions, local open training sessions, and an outreach coaching programme, providing hundreds of local children with valuable sporting opportunities and fostering a love of sport across the region.

Events Community events at the College include the National Schools Rugby Festival, Football and Netball Festivals, Under-11 Football and Cricket Festivals, as well as commemorative occasions like the VE Day 80th anniversary celebrations, all of which bring together our local community.

In addition the College hosts academic and pastoral events such as safeguarding forums and Suffolk County Council’s Sustainability in Education Conference, which brought together over 120 teachers and school leaders to discuss and learn about sustainability practices in education.

Community Impact and Social Responsibility

Charity Each academic year, the College actively supports multiple charities by raising funds, collecting donations of food and books, visiting local care homes, and preparing and delivering 4,000 complimentary meals to residents across Ipswich.

Partners The College maintains partnerships with a diverse range of organisations across sport, the arts, education, ecological initiatives, and both local and global communities.

Facilities The College warmly welcomes a diverse range of community groups and clubs to use its facilities and campus throughout the year. This includes local sports clubs, cultural organisations, and notably, a Romanian church group that regularly gathers on campus for worship By providing a welcoming space for such groups, the College fosters a strong sense of community and inclusivity.

The College has been instrumental in delivering education and engagement activities to local schools and nurseries through community outreach and sporting masterclasses:

Community Outreach Programme:

National Schools Rugby Festival

The St Jo’s Rugby Festival unites the top state and independent school teams, offering young athletes a prestigious platform to showcase their skills and compete at the highest level of rugby. It is regionally and internationally renowned bringing visitors to the region and is broadcast globally. Former student participants include Marcus Smith and Mako Vunipola.
