oratorios of Handel with The Holst Singers and The Brook Street Band; we now turn our attention to the epic story of Joshua. Later in July we are treated to another monumental story, this time mythological rather than biblical, when Gabrieli under Paul McCreesh bring Purcell’s King Arthur to life.

WELCOME There’s a fabulous season of music making this summer at St John’s.

We are delighted to be hosting the inaugural London Festival of Baroque Music in May, the successor to the Lufthansa Festival of previous years.

In their packed programme you will find exclusive concerts from the likes of Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan and Concerto Soave with María Cristina Kiehr alongside close friends such as Ex Cathedra and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. New for this year are opportunities for you to join the Festival and to Sing Baroque; do come and lend your voice to support the Festival.

Sacred music is always central to our programme and the Tilford Bach Society’s performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion with the London Handel Orchestra directed by Adrian Butterfield on 16 June is a night not to miss.

There is fantastic chamber music on offer throughout the season. Our regular Thursday lunchtime, Sunday afternoon and Young Artists’ recitals continue and over the final weekend of June we welcome back James Gilchrist and Anna Tilbrook, joined on this occasion

by Carolyn Sampson and Ensemble Elata, for a compelling series of concerts immersing us in the world of Schumann and Mendelssohn.

Alongside the few events mentioned above we are delighted to welcome

back so many regular friends such as the Orchestra of St John’s, the Delta Saxophone Quartet and The Amadè Players as well as those making their St John’s debuts such as the English Symphony Orchestra and the Danish Sinfonietta.

Each programme contains familiar orchestral or large chamber works played in contemporary transcriptions for smaller forces. These are paired with music where variation is the driving force.

Beethoven's own transcriptions feature in each programme and works by Mozart are transformed by his star pupil Hummel and noted contemporary Christian Schwenke - in his day a well-known musician who succeeded CPE Bach as cantor in Hamburg and, like Hummel, did much to promote Mozart's music after his death.

Schwenke's brilliant transformation of the Serenade for Thirteen Wind Instruments is the main work in this, the final programme.

HANDEL: JOSHUA Join us as we continue our exploration of Handel’s oratorios, guided by Stephen Layton, for the Old Testament epic story of Joshua.

In one of Handel’s most theatrical of oratorios this is a piece full of contrasts and drama; a tender love story, epic battles and monumental choruses including the ever popular ‘See, the conqu'ring hero comes!’.

Befitting the dramatic nature of the work, this is one of Handel's most colourful orchestrations, with trumpets, horns and even military drum all used to wonderful effect, and Handel's genius for word-painting is demonstrated throughout the work, though perhaps most effectively in the awe-inspiring collapse of the walls of Jericho heard in Act 2.

This is Handel at his most majestic and dramatic, but also full of poetry and intimacy.

PURCELL: KING ARTHUR Gabrieli return to St John’s Smith Square for a performance of Purcell’s King Arthur, the great patriotic opera of the seventeenth century depicting the battles between King Arthur’s Britons and Saxons.

Full of brilliant dance music and beautiful songs, this 1691 setting of John Dryden poetry includes the justly famous Fairest Isle and the great ‘frost scene’ in one of Purcell’s most vivid and imaginative scores.

Lead by Paul McCreesh, Gabrieli’s cast includes soloists Sophie Junker, Grace Davidson, Nicholas Mulroy, Marcus Farnsworth and Ashley Riches.

ST JOHN’S COMMUNITY OPERA A two week course aimed at devising, performing and staging opera at St John's Smith Square. There will be opportunities for singers, instrumentalists, stage crew, prop makers and designers and both for those with and without formal training.

Two projects will run side by side; one to stage a production of Purcell's The Fairy Queen and the second to create and stage a new piece, devised in response to ideas from Purcell's work.

Musical opportunities will exist for soloists, chorus members, instrumentalists and composers.

There will also be opportunities for dancers, writers, directors and a technical team.

ST JOHN’S ‘FIND YOUR VOICE’ COURSE

ST JOHN’S CHAMBER ORCHESTRA COURSE A one week course aimed at young orchestral players. This course is aimed at young musicians who are already proficient on an orchestral instrument (Grade 7 standard or above). Places will be limited so register early to be sure of your place. Throughout the week coaching will be provided by professional players from the London orchestras.

This course would be ideally suited to young people considering applying to music college or to university to study music.

LONDON INTERNATIONAL A CAPPELLA CHOIR COMPETITION We are delighted to welcome back the London International A Cappella Choir Competition to St John’s Smith Square, following the fabulous success of the inaugural competition in 2014, eventually won by the Spanish choir El León de Oro. Once again, Peter Phillips of The Tallis Scholars will be chairing an international jury who will oversee heats from Tuesday through to Friday with the Grand Final taking place on Saturday 26 September.

The Competition opens on Monday 21 September in a wonderfully celebratory way with the 2000th concert by The Tallis Scholars in this, their 42nd year.
