FOUNDATION MATTERS | SPRING 2021

If nothing else, this pandemic has brought to light the true value and importance of access to outstanding, reliable, and well-managed health care. St. John’s Health has been nothing short of tremendous in its response to COVID-19. I’m proud to say our philanthropic partnership with the community, and all of you, has made the difference in St. John’s ability to respond to the biggest health threat of our generation. We’re tremendously grateful for Paul Beaupré and his extraordinary leadership in managing this unparalleled crisis. As we wished Paul a well-deserved retirement in February, we welcomed Will Wagnon as the new CEO of St. John’s Health. In this issue, you’ll read more about Will, our new board chair, and community members we welcomed to the St. John’s Health Foundation Board of Directors. You’ll also read about Deirdre Griffith’s journey to the Mongol Derby, the longest and toughest horse race in the world, and her efforts to fundraise for women’s mental health in Jackson Hole. I am awestruck by Deirdre’s courage and deeply grateful for her support. We also report on the impact of Mental Health JH and the COVID-19 Response Fund, which has offset the cost for hundreds of mental health visits throughout the valley. The remarkable generosity from donors like you have made it possible for St. John’s Health to continue to provide compassionate care for our family, friends, neighbors, and visitors. Thank you for your generous support. We are grateful for all that you do for our community hospital! Sincerely,

Program Update: Mental Health JH Your gifts offset mental health visits for community members.

As the pandemic took hold in spring 2020, a cohort of mental health professionals observed heightened stress in the community, but they didn’t feel that community members had the resources to easily access mental health services. This concerned group collaborated with local nonprofits and private practices to form the Mental Health JH pilot program, with funding support from St. John’s Health Foundation and the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole. “In mountain towns, we often place a lot of value on our physical health, and sometimes when our mental health suffers, we lack the tools and resources to address that need. We hope that Mental Health JH will shine a light on this issue and be a bridge to help provide services,” said St. John’s Health Foundation President John Goettler. The Mental Health JH Pilot Program at St. John’s Health Foundation has offset the cost of care for over 3,390 mental health visits to date.

Since launching the pilot program, valley experts have witnessed firsthand the increased need for mental health services. Participants cite anxiety and stress as the two main reasons for seeking treatment. Our mental health community is rising to meet the challenge, however, the demand for services is not going away anytime soon. St. John’s Health Foundation is extremely grateful to our donors, community partners, and mental health professionals who have made this pilot program possible. When the pilot ends, program leaders will review the data, results, and insights. To apply for Mental Health JH, please visit mentalhealthjh.com.

To discuss local resources, please call or text the St. John’s Mental Health Resource Line at (307) 203-7880, Monday - Friday (8am - 4pm). Donor Spotlight: Deirdre Griffith Supporting Mental Health through the World’s Toughest Horse Race.

She met her husband, Vance, at the Triangle X Ranch, and the two enjoyed several wonderful years working together in the backcountry. Soon after starting work on the Twin Eagle Ranch in Cora, WY, they started a family and now have two little girls, Lilah and Delaney. “I struggled with postpartum depression with both of my pregnancies. Discouraged and too exhausted by what seemed to be a parttime job of getting help, I stopped trying to get professional help and went it alone,” says Deirdre. Deirdre Griffith, a local real estate professional, is raising funds for women’s mental health in Jackson Hole as a participant in the world’s longest and toughest horse race. The Mongol Derby is a grueling 1,000-kilometer competition across the steppe of Mongolia, which traces the former routes of Genghis Khan’s horseback messenger system. Deirdre competed against hundreds of applicants from around the world to be one of forty riders to embark on the ten-day journey taking place Aug. 11-20. The race is more than an adventure, it also requires its participants to raise money for a charity of their choice. Deirdre is raising money to support women struggling with pre-and postpartum depression and other mental health issues surrounding pregnancies through the St. John’s Health Foundation.

Postpartum depression is a complex mix of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes that occur in some women following pregnancy and delivery. Most new mothers experience the “baby blues” after delivery, however, Postpartum Support International estimates that 1 in 5 women will develop a more severe and longerlasting depression after delivery. Deirdre’s fundraising goal is $50,000 and she promises donations will go twice as far thanks to a match promised by a generous donor. As of March 5, 2021, Deirdre has raised $44,483. “Women in our community deserve a resource they can call to easily access support. I’m excited to present the St. John‘s Health Foundation with a check of $100,000 when I depart for the Mongol Derby in August,” says Deirdre. To learn more about Deirdre’s journey to the Mongol Derby visit deirdresmongolderby2021.com.

Deirdre worked for several cattle ranches and outfitters while completing her undergraduate and masters degrees at Colorado State University. After graduating, she fulfilled her dream by moving to Jackson Hole and joining the Triangle X Ranch as a packer, camp cook, and wrangler in the hunting camp. “I was hired on taking summer pack trips and sharing my love of the mountains with guests. Packing, cooking, and working for guests on trips was exhausting, exhilarating, and absolutely beyond comparison,” says Deirdre. STJOHNSFOUNDATION.HEALTH
