SJE Impact Report: 2022-'23

Elevat ing Our E ag le s

The many achievements you see highlighted in this year’s Impact Report are a compelling testament to St. John’s “Value Proposition.” Our unique value proposition - what advantageously differentiates SJE from others - is found within the heart and soul of our school and deeply rooted in three fundamental ideals: Transparency, Stewardship, and Culture.

St. John’s parents are encouraged to actively engage in and partner with the school in support of their child’s experience. Whether it is detailing how tuition dollars and increases are utilized, what we teach, or how we measure teacher performance, St. John’s believes it a matter of fundamental respect for and partnership with parents to be open, accessible, and share key important information about their children’s experience. Private school is an extremely important and significant investment that typically involves some sacrifice by families. It is our priority to make sure that St. John’s is known as a respectful and trusted steward of the financial investment families make in their children’s education. For this reason, we make sure every tuition dollar is budgeted for its highest and best use. St. John’s remains steadfastly committed to a comprehensive pricing structure grounded in our mission to keep the St. John’s experience socially and economically broadly accessible and built around the middle class. In doing so, we also effectively shape and maintain the type of community we are - authentic, supportive, and proudly antithetical to what many see as private school elitism.

The one aspect of St. John’s I cherish the most is our culture - more accurately the fact we are “counter-cultural.” St. John’s is a refuge for families who want something different for their children than education driven by popular culture. In this sense, ours is a “values proposition.” We believe in children and that there is a sanctity to childhood that ought to be cherished and protected. “Let children be children” is our mantra. At St. John’s, education has a higher purpose, one all who work at the school feel compelled to serve.

In a society and world marked increasingly by change and uncertainty, I believe there has never been a greater need or more important time for St. John’s Episcopal School. We continue to enjoy record interest from those who seek the values-driven education provided at our wonderful school. Given the immense responsibility that accompanies being entrusted with other people’s children, all of us at St. John’s are privileged to work with them. On behalf of my entire team, I thank you for continuing to share your children with us and for making the 2022-2023 school year such a tremendous success!

Investing In Our Teachers

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” - Ibn Battuta

This is the feeling conveyed by the St. John’s foreign language teachers after being among the first recipients of the school’s newest Eagles Fund allocation, faculty travel grants.

For Kendal Ogles (teacher of Grades 5-8 Latin), Ardeli Beaulieu (teacher of Grades 5-8 Spanish), and Paula Hernandez-Davila (teacher of K4-Grade 4 Spanish), this summer provided the opportunity to travel overseas to exciting destinations, immersing themselves in places and cultures relevant to the languages they teach. All three express gratitude for the Eagles Fund donations that made these travel grants possible.

“This was a way to further our subject matter expertise,” enthuses Beaulieu. “Paula and I traveled together to Salamanca, Spain to attend the annual teacher conference there. It’s part of our professional development – a chance to go to where our language started, to see the history, architecture, and people. All of that makes up, and helps create, a language.”

The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) 105th Annual Conference in Salamanca served as an ideal destination for Beaulieu and Hernandez-Davila, to not only enrich their understanding of Spanish culture and language, but to meet colleagues from all around the world to exchange ideas and best practices. All of it will help inform their classroom teaching at St. John’s, they say.

“It was great to meet so many teachers from across the U.S. who teach the same grades I do,” says Hernandez-Davila. “We got the idea for a Hispanic Heritage event from another teacher there, using a cultural alphabet where students identify parts of a Spanish-speaking country’s culture using ABC’s, such as A for arepas.” In a collaborative effort, Middle School students will be working with Lower School students on the Cultural Alphabet Project this year during Hispanic Heritage Month, adds Beaulieu.

Concurrently, Ogles’ Eagles Fund travel grant took her to Greece and Turkey, where she perceived the modern-day presence of the Latin language’s ancient roots in the places she visited, helping to make a language not currently spoken feel quite alive.

“Having the ability to experience this continuing, living culture — being able to see the actual remains; stepping foot into temples; going to the islands and special places — really brings ancient Greek and Roman history to life,” Ogles explains. “You can really picture what happened. Through my experiences on this trip, I’ll bring that to life for my students. I took pictures of every temple and have created a PowerPoint we’re going to use around the National Mythology Museum.”

CONNECTING THREADS

Because St. John’s foreign language team is so intertwined and mutually supportive, all three noticed overlapping threads between Latin and Spanish that they discussed afterwards. “We call Latin the mother and father, linguistically – it’s the root of Spanish and all romance languages,” Beaulieu says.

Ogles agrees, noting that when she visited Turkey, she noticed cultural aspects that are also woven into Spanish culture. Likewise, Hernandez-Davila noticed Latin words in cathedrals in Spain and contemplated the connections.

One of the main takeaways for Ogles will be the ability to use photos and ideas from her trip to help bring Latin alive for students at St. John’s. “I’ll use my visits to various museums in Greece and Turkey to create teaching tools around burial customs,” she explains. “Students will be divided into teams of two and will express thoughts about why there were different burial styles for men and women, or why some were buried with a dog or

10
Kendal Ogles

with gold or with a baby bottle. Bringing these aspects of everyday life and culture into my Latin teaching is really important to me.”

The trip to Spain provided the Spanish teachers a chance to broaden their linguistic repertoire, based on hearing different dialects and words in Salamanca compared to the Spanish spoken in other places they’ve visited or lived. It also reinforced the power of being able to speak other languages while traveling for pleasure or work – “English isn’t always available!,” Beaulieu says with a laugh, adding that learning Spanish is helpful not only while traveling but in business and beyond. The Latino/Hispanic population in Tampa has grown to 26%, and is the country’s largest minority group, she adds.

“We speak the language, but there are words in that part of Spain that are different,” she adds. “We learned a lot by walking around and interacting with the people.” Experiencing Spanish cuisine and music — for instance, hearing castanets in street music performances — are other aspects they plan to bring into their classrooms, says Hernandez-Davila.

GRATEFUL FOR EAGLES FUND DONORS

Ogles is grateful to have more tools to continue elevating what is already an award-winning Latin program, including recognition at the national competitions to which she leads her students, as well as the National Mythology Exam.

“You can really see that St. John’s is serious about investing in teachers by taking the Eagles Fund and putting resources into foreign languages,” Ogles says. “Our students win award after award because there’s a focus on foreign languages here. Same with other St. John’s teachers: the Eagles Fund now enables teachers to travel to places where they can gain insight and apply it when teaching your children, which adds an experiential quality.”

“I’m really happy travel grants were part of the Eagles Fund this school year,” says Hernandez-Davila. “When the opportunity to choose a trip arose, Ardeli and I looked at each other and said, ‘Salamanca Conference!’ To be able to attend with other Spanish teachers and see how this language is taught all across the U.S. and beyond brings a different mindset. I will be able to bring those experiences to life for my students.”

Unwavering Support For SJE

With a master’s degree in American History – and a history of classroom success – Grade Level Dean and Grades 7-8 History Teacher Joe Woodard has the skills and experience to be an invaluable asset to any school. But for him, St. John’s was his preferred choice when applying to schools in 2009, and he loves the school even more 14 years later.

“It never ceases to amaze me how supportive the St. John’s community is when it comes to educating children,” Woodard says. “The families appreciate the faculty, and they go out of their way to show it. I’ve enjoyed nothing but unwavering support. It makes me want to do the best job I can for our students.”

“THIS INSTITUTION LOVES MY DAUGHTER”

Joe and wife Carrie’s daughter Sydney is a rising Grade 1 student who started at the school in K4, has also benefited greatly from being a part of “the St. John’s family,” he says. “This institution loves our daughter! I believe in what Sydney’s teachers are doing. I believe in our mission and in the direction of the school.”

Woodard applauds St. John’s for being “a safe place but also challenging.” The emphasis at the school on critical thinking skills is a crucial part of the entire K4-8 experience and is designed to prepare students for success in high school and beyond, he adds. “I believe in the Christian-based education—the way the school challenges every child academically and spiritually, and nurtures the entire child.”

EAGLES FUND DONATIONS ELEVATE TEACHING

As both teacher and parent at the school, Woodard has been able to view the power of Eagles Fund donations from multiple perspectives. The benefits to teachers can be astounding: a travel grant from the Eagles Fund recently allowed him to travel to Boston to augment his subject matter knowledge in a hands-on way, providing “a more well-rounded view of some of the history I’ve been teaching for years,” he says.

“I’ve noticed the importance of local geography [in understanding history]. It’s been beneficial to see in Boston how close certain historical locations and events were. There are things you can get from physically being in a space where something historical happened. I think that’s a missing piece. That sense of space can help illuminate history,” he explains, adding with a smile: “I returned from the trip with loads of ideas I didn’t have before.”

“The faculty set the tone. At an independent institution, if the faculty members believe in the school, it’s important to reinvest in it. It sets a positive tone and says to everyone, ‘I’m going to show my involvement and that I love the school by giving.’”

Beyond select trip grants, the support provided teachers by the Eagles Fund extends throughout the year and to all classrooms. Through wish list submissions, teachers can count on receiving items above and beyond needed educational supplies, Woodard notes. “We’re never behind in that regard; we’re always at the curve or at the vanguard,” he adds. “That’s because the

Eagles Fund is going strong and makes things available.”

Based on these types of educational benefits for teachers and students – in addition to his love of the school – making his own annual donation to the Eagles Fund was and is an easy choice, Woodard says.

“The faculty set the tone,” he says. “At

an independent institution, if the faculty members believe in the school, it’s important to reinvest in it. It sets a positive tone and says to everyone, ‘I’m going to show my involvement and that I love the school by giving.’”

A Family Tradition

As alumni of St. John’s who attended the school in the ‘80s/’90s—now with their own kids enrolled as current Eagles—siblings Bert de Alejo and Brucie de Alejo Pitino say with pride that being at St. John’s is “a family tradition for us.” Brucie paved the way, starting at SJE in K5 and graduating in 1995, with younger brother Bert attending SJE all 10 years and graduating in 1997.

Bert recounts their parents’ original motivation for enrolling them at St. John’s being the school’s rigorous academic program, as well as the school’s structure and values – which remain a big attraction for parents.

Today, the family tradition continues, with both siblings’ children enrolled at St. John’s as current or rising students. Brucie and husband Christopher have three students at the school, including Andrew (rising Grade 7), James (rising Grade 5), and Nicolas (rising K4). Bert and wife Becca have Sebastian (rising Grade 1) at SJE, as well as Savanna who will join her cousin Nicolas in K4 in the fall.

BUILDING BLOCKS FOR AMBITIOUS FUTURES

With Bert a Managing Partner at real estate investment firm Laurel Ridge, and Brucie an independent attorney, the siblings agree that the building blocks of their career success came during their time as students at St. John’s.

“I had such a great experience as a student at St. John’s; it provided me with such a strong academic foundation,” Brucie enthuses. “In fact, I think we would both agree, we were challenged the most [in all our schooling] at SJE. That preparation made the rest of our academic and business endeavors easier. SJE taught us how to work independently, work hard, be prepared –and those lessons have served us very well.”

Enduring friendships and even business relationships have been another benefit, says Bert. “I have lifelong friends from St. John’s, including my dentist and several attorneys I work with. And when you’re sourcing something you need [professionally] it’s funny how you find people you knew from St. John’s who can help you out.”

“The Christian-based value system that the school has stayed

true to since opening is another reason we chose this school for our kids,” Bert says. “And there’s a level of diligence here that other schools don’t necessarily focus on. The diligence you come out of St. John’s with prepares you for any workload.”

SUPPORTING THE EAGLES FUND

That appreciation for the school over multiple generations led the siblings to support the Eagles Fund annually. For those considering giving, Brucie and Bert say they do it because giving is a recognition of the value they’ve observed first-hand in a St. John’s education.

“Our parents always stressed the importance of a strong education,” Bert explains. “So if I’m going to give to a charity, one of the first will be one that promotes education. The Eagles Fund enhances the experience of all students who attend this school. Dollar for dollar, you get incredible value for your donation.”

“One of the reasons to give is seeing how the Eagles Fund can help with professional development for the teachers,” adds Brucie. She says that wish list items granted to teachers through the fund—including technology and athletic program resources—are also big motivators for her family to give.

Ultimately, giving to the Eagles Fund comes down to supporting teachers and students. “My son comes home talking about how he loves his teachers,” Bert says. “Supporting that through the Eagles Fund is key.”

It’s A Calling

For Ruth Ann and Conrad Szymanski, grandparents of two St. John’s scholars, there have been numerous indications that their son Geoff Szymanski picked the right school for the kids four years ago. One came when they were bringing Geoff’s son Ryan (Alumnus, Class of 2023) back to school from an orthodontist appointment.

“I have to get to school as soon as possible!,” said Ryan enthusiastically – a rare statement for some kids, but not unusual for a St. John’s student. During his time as an Eagle, Ryan so enjoyed his school day that he didn’t want to miss a minute.

“The enthusiasm for school stems from the teachers — they are so passionate about what they do,” says Conrad. He adds that Ryan had a special fondness for Latin class at St. John’s, where Kendal Ogles, teacher of Grades 5-8 Latin, incorporates mythology into the study of Latin and the classics. In fact, in July Ryan was a member of the six-student team for the state of Florida at the National Junior Classical League competition at Emory University in Atlanta. The team got first in the country in Roman history, and first in the country in Certamen.

Ryan’s younger sister Sidney (Grade 7) is also prospering at the school. “Sidney immediately found new and accepting friends who have been close friends ever since the first day at St. John’s,” says Conrad. “She’s found a wonderful network of friends here.”

STAYING AHEAD OF THE CURVE

The community feel and love of the school emanates outwards from the teachers and administration and impacts the students, Ruth Ann and Conrad say. “For the teachers and staff, they say it’s a lot more than a job, it’s a calling,” says Ruth Ann with a smile.

That positive energy from the St. John’s team is part of what compelled the couple — and other grandparents — to donate to the Eagles Fund, Conrad adds.

“We are elated with the fantastic job the school is doing for our grandchildren, so we want to participate,” he says. “Donating helps sustain esprit de corps at the school. The other piece is that they’ve kept tuition low here compared to other schools, so we became a significant donor to help the school keep tuition affordable.”

Donating also helps the school stay ahead of the curve academically and be prepared in terms of resources.

“When I drop the grands off, you see that the teachers know them. All I see is respect toward the students, and in return it comes back to them.”
24
RUTH ANN & CONRAD SZYMANSKI

Having various education tools on hand, including iPads every student gets to use and take home with them, helped the school pivot exceptionally well during the initial phase of the pandemic in spring 2020, says Ruth Ann.

“They already had these and other tools in place, facilitated by the Eagles Fund, which was very important,” adds Conrad. “The school managed it very well that they were able to be almost instantly virtual at that time.”

MULTIPLE REASONS TO GIVE

The list of reasons to donate to the Eagles Fund is long, Ruth Ann and Conrad agree, all centered on the school’s quality and offerings that contribute to student growth and achievement.

“The extracurricular activities have really worked well for our students,” Conrad points out. “For our grandkids, that has included volleyball, cross country, soccer, theatre, and art club, which have added a lot to their education.”

“The smaller class sizes allow a lot of good things to percolate up,” adds Ruth Ann. Another notable aspect has been the return of overnight field trips after a pause during the pandemic. “The trips they’ve gotten to take have really enriched their experience,” says Conrad.

The whole package is tied together with “a homey feel” and sense of community, explains Conrad. Ruth Ann adds, “When I drop the

grands off, you see that the teachers know them. All I see is respect toward the students, and in return it comes back to them.”

“It’s just an amazing cocoon for these kids,” Conrad says. “Our grandson was a shy kid at first. But the first time we came to

Grandparents Day, we were amazed at how many different teachers spoke to him as he walked about the campus. As he graduated, he was speaking to all the teachers and students — he found his self-confidence. He’s found his voice here.”

Your Support Elevates The Eagles Fund

Each year St. John’s parents, grandparents, alumni, trustees, faculty, staff, partners and friends demonstrate their commitment to our school through their generous giving to the Eagles Fund. The outpouring of philanthropic support in the 2022-2023 school year was truly monumental, and is a resounding endorsement of our collective belief in the mission of our school to prepare each of our students for lifelong intellectual and spiritual growth by providing a superior educational experience within a nurturing Christian environment.

Now, more than ever, our hearts are grateful for your continued and faithful support. Together, we are a resilient community, whose united giving inspires generosity and makes a lasting impact on every child at St. John’s.

You are the visionaries, the influencers, and the philanthropists who empower our school to innovate and dream.
