Pictured on front cover: Anna Urakawa Anna joined the St John NSW in July of 2020. Having worked the past 10 years as a International Flight Attendant for Qantas, the COVID-19 pandemic saw borders slammed shut and all crews stood down indefinitely. Anna began working with St John NSW as an Emergency Health Responder - helping with the states COVID-19 frontline efforts.
“I’m glad to play a small, but important part in preventing the spread of the virus and I’m so thankful that St John NSW welcomed in so many of us from the aviation community. I’ve met so many amazing people and I’m proud to work for such a well-respected organisation.” 1
Respect We are ambassadors for St John. We are respected for the work that we do and the way that we do it. We recognise our strength comes from our diversity. We have the courage to be authentic and true.
For over 135 years, St John NSW has made a real difference - ensuring we have a lasting and positive impact on the wider community.

We are one of the leading providers of first aid and mental health training in Australia. We distribute first aid supplies and equipment, including defibrillators, and provide personalised onsite first aid services to workplaces.

mission and vision
Our mission is to save lives through first aid. Our History Not many organisations have a history like ours – a history that goes back over 130 years. The origins of St John NSW go back to 11th Century Jerusalem where the first Knights of St John set up a hospital to provide free shelter and medical care to sick pilgrims and crusaders. Known as the Knights Hospitallers, hundreds of men and women cared for those in need. The work of the Knights Hospitallers continued over many years and in many countries. In 1883, St John NSW was established in Australia to assist with providing essential medical services to communities in all states and territories. Responding to the lack of medical services at the time, first aid classes were set up across the country, teaching workplaces, particularly in heavy industry, how to treat injuries and illnesses. Today, St John Ambulance internationally is accredited to the United Nations and operates in more than 40 countries worldwide with a rich, long history built on a foundation of humanitarianism. Our members continue to be devoted to providing first aid and life-saving medical care in communities everywhere.

We endured natural disasters which ravaged communities, and a global pandemic that impacted many areas of our lives. 2020 tested our resolve, our willingness to change, and reshaped how we live and work. While there were devastating consequences, there were also silver linings. As an organisation, there was a lot we learnt from the challenges we experienced. We learnt that our strength lay in our people and their commitment to St John. We learnt that our corporate values mattered more than ever as we explored how we could best support our communities. We learnt that we could be agile and transform to meet the needs of our stakeholders. As bushfires bore down on our communities, displacing people in towns across the state, our volunteers were deployed to assist at evacuation centres, RFS base camps, and Emergency Operation Centres. More than 400 volunteers dedicated over 23,000 hours of first aid and mental health support in some of the most hard-hit regions. The NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citations were presented to hundreds of St John NSW volunteers and staff who showed dedication and commitment during this devastating disaster. St John NSW members were also on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our work alongside NSW Health saw St John NSW provide thousands of hours of frontline COVID-19 support, playing a significant role in our state’s path to recovery.

We were there at quarantine hotels, international and local airports and train stations, at COVID-19 hot spots and swabbing stations. St John NSW showed our ability to take on any task to support our community. Over 400 new roles were created enabling St John NSW to onboard new members, many of whom had lost their jobs during the pandemic.
We demonstrated our agility as an organisation as we continued to provide first aid training throughout COVID-19. Our training operations were rapidly adapted to allow for first aid courses to continue throughout the pandemic. Online learning options were introduced to ensure we could provide training to frontline workers including hospital staff, nurses, teachers, and workplace safety officers. Free online programs were developed for the community to assist them with hand hygiene and working from home. Free Facebook live online sessions, run by skilled trainers, allowed our isolated communities to reach out and get answers to all their first aid queries. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) was rapidly deployed to meet the needs of corporate and government organisations. The agility of our sales team in sourcing and supplying PPE and hygiene products resulted in an overall growth of 46% in product revenue – an incredible achievement in a time of absolute uncertainty. The cancellation of community events had a significant impact on our event health services and the work of our volunteer base. Our teams diverted their energies to online training, taking to zoom and new technologies. Our volunteers embraced changes in our service delivery and focussed on how best we could support the NSW Health system within this crisis. St John NSW continued to act in an agile manner and diversify our income streams through the provision of services including temperature screening at corporate sites such as Westpac and Woolworths and paramedics at Sydney train stations to ensure community safety.
As a result of COVID-19, St John NSW - like virtually every organisation - has had to make changes, adjust and evolve in order to adapt and grow in this challenging environment. One thing COVID-19 has highlighted is that we need to be both agile and consistent in our service offering, in order to meet the changing needs of our partners, clients and communities. To do this, we established the Volunteer Service Model Project (VSM) so that we can work towards achieving a sustainable and streamlined delivery model to support volunteering initiatives that will maximise our community impact with a more robust program to support our members.

Message from our Chair and CEO
For over 135 years, St John NSW has been a visible and reassuring presence throughout communities in NSW. In 2020, we put that to the test.
Looking ahead, we move forward into 2021 with a renewed sense of optimism but also, a sustained determination in the face of ongoing challenges. While the year to come may be as equally unpredictable as 2020, we will strive to navigate St John NSW through our newly-established 2021-2025 strategic plan, focusing on our mission of building community resilience and saving lives. We cannot, and have not, made it to where we are today without the incredible support of the St John NSW Board, Executive Team, staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters. It takes each of us to drive our organisation forward, working cohesively in the interest of our communities. We thank you for your resilience, your unwavering dedication, and your inherent optimism.

2020 presented some of the toughest challenges our nation has ever faced. St John NSW stepped forward when we were needed most - through one of the worst bushfire seasons in recent history to a global pandemic.
The NSW Bushfires St John NSW was first called upon by the NSW Department of Health to provide first aid services in mid-September 2019, leading to teams being deployed to a variety of posts (including base stations, staging areas, Evacuation Centres, Peer and Chaplaincy support, among others). Overall, St John NSW deployed 438 members to thirty-five locations, providing first-aid and mental health support to thousands of evacuees. They contributed over 23,000 hours working alongside emergency service organisations including the Rural Fire Service. A special thanks goes to St John VIC, QLD & ACT for their support!

The Coronavirus Pandemic
Dear members,
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, St John NSW members worked tirelessly to help keep communities safe and infection-free. We deployed at the request of NSW Health with hundreds of members working at sites right across the state, including:
2020 was a year no one could have ever anticipated. We endured natural disasters which ravaged communities, and a global pandemic that impacted each of our lives. It tested our resolve, our willingness to change and reshaped the way we live and work.
• 69,632 hours of support at Quarantine Hotels • 26,763 hours of support throughout local health districts • 8,347 hours of swab testing • 1,168 hours of temperature screening
Our members provided critical help at drive-through clinics in Western Sydney, including Picton, Liverpool and Casula, providing additional resources for logistics and screening. In regional communities, members were responsible for screening temperatures of train passengers on the NSW/VIC border and at regional airports across the state. Our commercial teams provided innovative solutions - responding to changing circumstances. Training teams were soon able to provide vital internal and certified external First Aid courses via new online portals and assessment delivery methods. St John NSW was also able to secure alternative medical supply chains to ensure provision of critical personal protection equipment and other essential medical products. Community service teams were able to offer their services to new commercial clients in particular via the provision of on-site temperature testing.

Overcoming Obstacles
Despite all this, we evolved and emerged stronger all because of our people and their commitment to St John NSW. It was this dedication by our staff and volunteers that enabled St John NSW to be agile and transform to meet the needs of our partners and the greater community. Despite dealing with the challenges of the pandemic on a personal level, each of you have stepped up to help ensure St John NSW maintained a visible and reassuring presence keeping communities across NSW safe. For this we are sincerely grateful. From our admin and back-office support through to those who worked on the frontline, we want to say thank you for everything you do, every contribution you make and mostly for your dedication, service, and commitment. The St John NSW Board wanted to let you know how proud we are of the St John NSW team, the achievements made and the positive impact you have had on the NSW community. Thank you. St John NSW Clinical Advice Line
Rick’s Story:
During 2020, the Clinical Advisory Group piloted a Clinical Advice Line with the primary aim to help any member of St John NSW whilst on duty with complex, unusual or difficult decisions around clinical care.
St John NSW volunteer, Rick Wong, was on duty when a swimmer suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the water. With the help of other bystanders, Rick was able to move the man out of the water to begin CPR and deliver four lifesaving shocks from a defibrillator.

Together, Rick and the other bystanders managed to save the man’s life.
Tanya’s Story: Tanya completed her first aid course with St John NSW in July 2020. Just days later, her brother had a stroke at home. Her first aid training kicked in - giving her the knowledge and confidence to immediately help her brother. She asked the right questions and completed the right checks to correctly identify that he was having a stroke, and needed immediate attention. Since doing her training, Tanya notes that she
Staffed by St John NSW volunteer healthcare professionals including registered nurses, paramedics and doctors, the advice line helps members plan for a patient’s care and support clinical decision-making in the field. To start with, the advice line pilot ran from Friday to Monday and measured the effectiveness of the line for members and their patients. They found the line provided additional advice, support and information to help members provide the best possible care to their patients. The advice line runs across our busiest times across weekends and is deployed 24/7 throughout any emergency.
“felt very confident and knew to act immediately.” She says being able to take control and not panic, getting her brother the attention he needed helped save his life. 10

Our highlights “I found that after I did the course, I was really interested in learning more about mental health.”
RFSA partnership In June 2020, St John NSW partnered with the NSW Rural Fire Service Association (RFSA) to offer mental health first aid to over a thousand volunteer firefighters. Our mental health course taught volunteers how to provide support to their colleagues and friends experiencing depression or anxiety, and how to assist them in a mental health crisis. Student feedback submitted after the course indicated the success and learning taken away by students.
“I really enjoyed it and feel better equipped for the inevitable phone call from a member in distress.”

In 2020, St John NSW members continued to focus on how best to serve our communities throughout the many challenged we faced. We adapted to online training, deployed rapidly to support NSW Health when we were needed, diversified our business, launched new initiatives and strengthened many existing partnerships. The incredible results we achieved was due to the effort of every member of our organisation through what has been one of the most challenging years in recent history.
“Heartfelt congratulations from a very proud Commissioner - always proud of our members but especially proud of our members publicly showing St John is an inclusive, compassionate and respectful organisation.” A/Prof Dr Jason Bendall Commissioner of St John NSW

Our highlights COVID and CPR: Volunteer Training
St John NSW members attended a Clinical Simulation Education Day to ensure their readiness to respond to a deteriorating patient in anticipation of mass events returning. The day was designed to develop and refresh our skills in professional best practice. This includes infection control (DON/DOFF procedures) basic and advanced life support resuscitation protocols, resource utilisation, and incident management and response in diverse situations.
SES Road Crash Training
Plane Crash Simulation
Coffs Harbour Division took part in the SES road crash scenario training in November. The team were put to the test with multiple scenarios and worked closely with each other and other agencies to get the best patient outcomes.
Members from Coffs Harbour and Tamworth Divisions joined a combined all-agency response to a simulated plane crash in 2020. The purpose of the day was to test the local disaster capabilities in the event of an aircraft incident. The Divisions were fortunate enough to receive an invitation from NSW Ambulance and the Local Emergency Management Committee to attend. Members were introduced to the concepts of Emergency Management, working as a support agency at a major incident, smart triage and treating patients alongside NSW Ambulance.

The Bicycle Emergency Response Team covered a number of events in 2020, including major events at Sydney Olympic Park and in Canberra. The 2020 team consisted of 55 members and 25 bikes - navigating crowded spaces and large areas when needed. As events started to pick up later in 2020, the team spent considerable effort screening patients, determining PPE requirements, and supporting their fellow St John NSW teams.
BERT in Action More than 40,000 spectators filled the stadium at Sydney Olympic Park in October 2020 to watch the NRL Grand Final. There was a lot of action on the field – but nothing like the situation our BERT (Bicycle Emergency Response Team) team found themselves in. At the end of the evening four St John NSW volunteers were called to a male who was in cardiac arrest. He had collapsed in the rain just before the BERT team had found him. The team moved the patient, started CPR and connected a defibrillator to administer a shock. He was unconscious until he was loaded into the ambulance. The patient survived and in recovery said he looked forward to meeting the four St John NSW volunteers who helped save his life. To Edward, Callum, Didier and Richard – well done and thank you. You are all clear examples of why St John NSW exists, and why our volunteers play such a critical role in our communities.

While St John NSW members typically spend ANZAC Day attending services such as Dawn Service, Remembrance Services and local marches, in 2020 the community was encouraged to show their respects by standing in their driveways at dawn. Many St John NSW members from all areas and all ages, donned their uniforms and stood in their driveways to pay their respects to our ANZACs while representing the organisation.
“This morning as we stood at our driveways, I was thinking about how different this year is in so many ways. But as people came out there was an amazing warm and comradery, no different to the traditional Anzac morning services. I want to offer my gratitude to those who served and continued to serve and I want to thank our current and past St John NSW serviceman for what they have done and are doing. Lest We Forget.” Ilan Lowbeer Deputy Commissioner
Peer Support Training In 2020, a number of members joined the Peer Support and Chaplaincy Program, delivering welfare support to St John NSW members across the state. Throughout 2020, the Peer Support team hosted ‘COVID-19 Wellbeing Check-in Sessions’ via Zoom; giving members a place to talk about COVID-19 and the impact it had in their own lives, The team also hosted meditation-based ‘Wellness & Compassion Workshops’ and ‘First Aid for the Mind (First Responders)’ focusing on equipping members with the knowledge to assist a person experiencing a mental health crisis, as well as how to look after each other as first responders. The team also provided on-the-ground support at high-risk events including music festivals and emergency response evacuations, assisting St John NSW teams and members of the public.
“Just finished a shift at the PIIC. What a incredible experience to say the least, was grateful to have my fellow PSO buddy Abigail with me for support all night long! Just a quick reminder to everyone that does do these shifts, please check in if needed with either Peer Support, Chaplaincy or VEAP, it’s a tough gig being on the end of the phone at this time and something completely different to our ‘normal’.” Jayde McCallie St John NSW Member

ANZAC Day
In 2020, St John NSW successfully won a tender to provide paramedic services at several stations across the Sydney Trains network during peak commute times. This ensures that any customers who fall ill or sustain an injury are provided with high quality primary care when it’s needed.
Bushfire Recognition The NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citations and St John NSW Bushfire Recognition Awards were presented to approximately 380 Volunteers and staff who showed dedication and commitment during a devastating disaster for our community. Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons of Resilience NSW attended the St John NSW Harbourside Division Awards Night to present a number of members with the NSW Premier’s Bushfire Citations in recognition of their commitment and service.
Mass Casualty Exercise The St John NSW Granville Combined Division joined their local SES unit in a rigorous Mass Casualty Exercise in November 2020. The teams were tested to their limits searching, treating and extricating multiple victims with varying injuries. These interagency exercises are crucial in maintaining operational readiness so when our communities need help, we are there and making a positive impact. 20

Shocking AUS Martin Place Activation In 2020 we held a CPR Challenge in the middle of Martin Place, Sydney. This event was part of our ShockingAUS campaign that aims to highlight the importance of CPR and defibrillators in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. The event was a huge success with friends, families, pre-schoolers, office workers, tourist and emergency service personnel, having a go at CPR and learning how to use a defibrillator. Greg Page, the original Yellow Wiggle came down for the day to support our campaign which he wholeheartedly believes in. After being saved by the quick response of his drummer and a nurse in the audience, who performed CPR and used a defibrillator, Greg now firmly believes that defibrillators should be as common as fire extinguishers, fire blankets and smoke detectors. He, like us, believes we can save many more lives by doing two things: teaching more people how to do CPR and making more defibrillators available.
“Through significant media coverage, we were able to reach a potential audience of over 1.2 million people - driving home just how critical it is that people have access to defibrillators.” Sarah Lance CEO

We provide fun, safe and supportive opportunities for young people to develop their skills, engage in the provision of community first aid services, and earn proficiency badges and awards. Our Youth Members play a significant role within our organisation. Our Junior (8 – 11 years) and Cadet (11 – 17 years) members learn first aid, communication, teamwork and leadership skills. Once they have completed training, they have the opportunity to attend first aid duties and be mentored by St John NSW volunteers - including healthcare professionals from a range of disciplines.
Virtual Learning for Youth
CASE STUDY
At the onset of COVID-19 our Youth Divisions helped to shift the program online, allowing members to continue to connect, foster their friendships, and progress with the learning and development.

Our Youth
The Youth leadership worked hard to make necessary adjustment and ensure the transition to online learning was a smooth and effective one - from considering child safety, how to cater to the needs of the different age groups and even how to celebrate virtually - they made online learningan enjoyable activity. End of term celebrations went ahead with Youth Teams organising virtual trivia nights, escape rooms, virtual and escape challenges!
Abby’s Story Abby has been part of the St John NSW Youth Program for two years. She joined after completing her first aid course through school. “My favourite thing about St John NSW is all the opportunities I get to meet and talk to people. I absolutely love attending duties at community events (such as sports carnivals, movie nights, and even the Easter Show!), because the adult members are able to teach me so much. A lot of them are paramedics or doctors so you can learn really interesting things from them about how they treat their patients at work.” “Being a part of St John NSW has made me realise how much I love to help other people, and how important serving others is in our world. I have also realised how much I love the human side of first aid – interacting with the public and meeting new people. I would love to study medicine at university, and eventually become a doctor.”

The Order of St John The Order of St John, formally known as The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, is a Royal Order of Chivalry first constituted as such by Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1888. Currently Queen Elizabeth II is the Sovereign Head of The Order of St John, followed by the Grand Prior, Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. The Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem originated in a hospice founded around 1070 to care for pilgrims, which was dedicated to St John the Baptist. The brothers and sisters of the Hospital, which was recognised as a religious Order by the Pope in 1113, nursed the poor and sick of any faith. The Order of St John is active in more than 30 countries around the world.

Looking ahead
Our Retired Members Network (RMN) was officially established on 19 July 2013, following a proposal by State Councillor Mr Harry Delaney KStJ in early 2013. In March 2018 the name was changed to Retired and Former Members Network.
We combine the wisdom of the past, over 130 years of knowledge, with the energy of the future – continually searching for new programs that will make the difference, bridge the gap, and support our communities. We are passionate about empowering communities to save lives.
Currently, the network has 120 enthusiastic members. The network provides an opportunity for members (volunteers and staff) who are no longer serving to stay connected and informed with the latest information and news through an ongoing regular email system. Prior to the pandemic, the network we held luncheons at a local club with a guest speaker. These luncheons serve as a great opportunity for former members to go and enjoy each other’s company and catch up. In 2020, there was an audit done on the years of service of those attending the luncheon, which revealed over 1000 years of service sat in the room.

Plans for 2021
“We will continue to transform our organisation, diversify our programs, and show agility and innovation in developing our customer-centric approach.” Sarah Lance CEO of St John NSW
We will continue to invest in our people, building our core capabilities and capacity. We have developed a values-based organisation, built on trust and respect, for and between all members of St John NSW. Engagement is core to how we operate – within our own teams, across our organisation and with our stakeholders and communinties. Our volunteer model re-built on our zones and hubs model to aid engagement and support communication, will evolve as we roll out an enhanced recruitment, induction and training program that utilises online delivery based on our clinical and education expertise. Leadership training and strengthening our safety framework to support our youth and cadet teams, our clinical governance and our emergency service response will continue to be core to our framework. Members of St John NSW, both paid and volunteer, work side by side to serve our communities by providing essential health support services. We work with other health and emergency services to collectively deliver emergency and community health services that are right for NSW. A centralised program of asset enhancement is underway to ensure that all divisions across NSW are ready to respond when needed. 49
