LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Greetings from St. Joseph’s Catholic School!

A good friend and mentor of mine who is a priest encouraged me when I was a young head of school to always pay attention to the numbers. While numbers don’t tell the whole story, they do reveal something about the reality of a situation and help keep one from cloudy thinking, be it overly optimistic or unnecessarily pessimistic.

In this Annual Report, St. Joseph’s is pleased to report on our reality by sharing our “numbers” from the 2021-22 school year. For the stories behind these numbers, I refer you to The Red Door, the new annual magazine published by St. Joseph’s Catholic School. Copies of the inaugural edition featuring stories from the 2021-22 school year are available by contacting the school.

So what do the numbers in this report tell us about the reality of SJCS?

Our students continue to excel academically, providing them with extraordinary opportunities to continue to grow in college and beyond, earning SJCS a well-deserved local, regional, and national reputation. See pages 7-12.

Our students have regular opportunities for life-changing encounters with the love and mercy of Christ through times of fellowship, retreat, service, and the reception of the sacraments. See pages 13-14.

Our athletic and fine arts programs are an integral part of the St. Joseph’s experience, providing students with all manner of athletic and artistic outlets

to further develop their talents and foster a sense of belonging. See pages 15-18.

Our student body and staff are more diverse than they have ever been, giving us excellent opportunities to promote dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect, important skills for leadership in the 21st century. See page 5.

The members of our community are more generous than they have ever been with their time, talents, and treasure. See pages 19-32.

The school is in a solid financial position, a testimony to the sound financial management and leadership provided year in and year out by the Board of Trustees, the unsung heroes of our community. See page 6.

Thank you for your generosity, support, and continued prayers that our school would fulfill the vision of the Founders and that our graduates would change the world for the better.

In Christ,

CAMPUS MINISTRY

Campus Ministry at St. Joseph’s is born from the gaze of Christ, who has looked upon us with love and called us to be an “evangelizing community.”

More than a specific club or group, SJCS Campus Ministry is the organic, overflowing love we have received from God in Christ. Campus Ministry is our community’s response to the needs of our students, who seek answers to the most profound questions of the human heart: Who am I? What is my meaning? Where do I belong? Campus Ministry events are born from a desire to share what was first received as a gift – from class retreats to mission trips to the smallest charitable work: “Freely you have received; freely you are to give” (Matthew 10:8).

FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS

The SJCS Fine Arts Department, founded in August 1999, seeks to enhance the academic curriculum by offering students an opportunity to explore the joy of the visual and performing arts.

Seniors were awarded college acceptances and scholarships to pursue their love of the Fine Arts at many schools including College of Charleston, Clemson University, Presbyterian College, and SCAD.

Theatre

The theatre program produced three full-length inperson productions, a 24-Hour Theatre Festival, one student-directed one-act play for state competition, and also sponsored two summer camps, and a shop safety certification class.

The following productions were performed: Mainstage productions included: 24 Hour Theatre Extravaganza A Midsummer Night’s Dream Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (performances dedicated to Emily Gushue) Student-directed One Acts: Oz (directed by Lyle Jones) Fourteenth Annual 8th Grade play: Twinderella Students attended college auditions at the Southeastern Theatre Conference.

Three SJCS students attended the annual Southeastern Theatre Conference, held in March in Memphis, TN. Additionally, junior Wren Gerac participated in the College & University Technical Theatre interview process, receiving callbacks to more than forty undergraduate Theatre programs.

Music

The middle school and high school Chorus, Strings, and

Band Ensembles each performed a full-length, in-person concert at the end of each semester.

A select group of students from the middle school ensembles performed a special performance for the annual Grandparents Day Luncheon.

Pep Band hosted a “Pep Band Camp” to learn and prepare for performing at the home Varsity Football games. The group played at four Home games and two playoff games.

Fourteen students of the Band ensembles joined other Catholic high schools to participate in the annual Diocesan Music Clinic held in Columbia, SC.

Middle School students participated in the SCISA Music Festival at the USC School of Music. The 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Festival Bands each received an “Excellent” rating.

The SJCS Fine Arts Department collaborated with the Violins of Hope for an all-school assembly with a presentation and display of violins that were owned by Jewish musicians during World War II. Violins of Hope is a series of concerts with a private collection of violins, violas, and cellos that were owned by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. Sophomores Nina Brown and Isabella Banan had the opportunity to perform with these rescued violins.

Visual Art

SJCS hosted a Spring Art Exhibit, showcasing the work of the students in the Visual Art classes.

The Visual Arts displayed miniature art pieces created by students in the MS and HS classes for the 2021 SJCS Bon Secours Christmas Tree at the Hyatt downtown, with the theme of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”.

Students in the Mixed Media I class traveled to tour the studio of Kent Ambler on Paris Mountain and learned about his work in painting, sculpture, and woodcut prints.

Three student artists entered their work into the 32nd Annual Upstate High School Art Exhibit: Andres Lindstrom (illustration), Mary Kate Farrell (watercolor painting), and Grace Widman (jewelry)

Andres Lindstrom won 3rd place in the Illustration category for his piece titled “Thoughts” - a three-paneled black ink illustration.

Kyle Tso won Greenlink’s Inaugural Bus Shelter Art contest with his “Mascots of Greenville” mural. The shelter with Tso’s mural is located on Laurens and Parkins Mill Road.

Roaring Through The Knight

The theme for the 2022 St. Joseph’s Catholic School Annual Auction Gala was “Roaring Through the Night - Sharing God’s Light.” The SJCS community looked the part -- the Roaring ‘20s was alive and well that night -- and did its part, raising funds to benefit tuition assistance and supporting the core belief of our school and our late founding Board Chair, Margaret Ann Moon, that no student should be turned away because of financial need. The keynote speaker was David Estes, a 2012 St. Joe’s graduate and a member of Clemson’s 2016 national championship football team.

St. Joseph’s School Prayer

Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Virgin and Foster-Father of Jesus Christ; obtain for me and all the members of my family, a pure, humble, and charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the Divine Will. Be my guide and model throughout life that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary.

Help us, Saint Joseph, in our earthly strife, to fulfill our responsibilities and ever to lead a pure and sinless life. Amen.
