Dear friends, The events from Palm Sunday to Easter Day mark a big change in the whole world for Christians. We start with a seemingly allpowerful king entering Jerusalem, move through the betrayal by a close friend, an unfair trial, death and a feeling of complete and utter desolation. I am sure that most of us can identify with that change from complete euphoria to something going wrong and feeling totally bereft. It all feels hopeless, as is there is no chance that things will ever look up. But, in the Easter journey, that is not the end. That desolation brought new possibilities, new life, new hope, with the Resurrection. But everything was different to before. Around the same time as Easter each year every parish church has a journey which, in some ways, is similar to that Easter journey. The church prepares for its annual meeting. Reports are gathered, looking back at what has happened in the past year. The Electoral Roll, the membership list if you like, is revised – new people might have been entered, while other people might have left. One third of the members of the PCC, the church council, finish their threeyearly term of office – some might stand again, some might not. Also, sometimes PCC members might decide to stand down. And, of course, the Church Wardens serve a year at a time, up to a maximum of six years – so there might be a change of Church Warden. After the annual meeting, life goes on – but it is different. The makeup of the PCC is slightly different, maybe there has been a change of Church Warden too. Hopefully there will be new ideas, new enthusiasm and maybe a slightly different direction. Through this process the life of the church is ever-so-slightly renewed and revived, with new possibilities presenting themselves. This year at St John’s we do have a new makeup of the PCC following our meeting on Sunday 23rd March. Penny has left the PCC, while Jane Collard and Suzanne Cannon have joined. Roger Coombes has become an elected member. We give thanks to those who have finished their time (for the moment), and look 5

forward to the contribution of the new members. Also, we give thanks to Jane Schofield and Sandy who have represented St John’s on the Deanery Synod in recent years, and look forward to them continuing this good work. The biggest difference, at least visibly, is with the office of Church Warden. As you will be aware, Jane Schofield has stepped down after serving five years in this important role, although happily she won’t be leaving our congregation but rather freeing herself to serve God in different ways here at St John’s. We give thanks to God for Mary Membrillera stepping forward to become our new Church Warden, and look forward to working with her in the coming years. Legally Jane remains Warden until Mary is officially sworn in by the Archdeacon in May, but in practice there will be a gradual handover. After the Resurrection things were slightly different, allowing God to work in a completely different way. There was new life out of desolation, joy from sadness, but things were different. After our annual meeting, too, things are different – God is making all things new. Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart

ST JOHN’S HOME GROUP Our Home Group meets twice monthly in members’ homes on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm. Set subjects are discussed in an informal setting with the aim of developing our understanding of Christianity and developing friendship networks for mutual support and encouragement. We are currently looking at the letter of Paul to the Philippians. Please contact Penny 885876 if you would like more information. 6

A letter from a soon to be ex-churchwarden When I was at church one Sunday recently several people asked whether I was intending to continue worshipping at St John’s once I am no longer a church warden. Well, of course I am! After five years in the role it is time for me to step down. I will be getting rid of the “title”(so????), the perceived authority (which has never, ever been brought in to play) and the responsibility (phew!!!!). I will never, ever get rid of my love and passion for our community, St John’s church and the people. It has been a great privilege to serve in this way, firstly with Caroline and latterly with Stuart. There have been some great highs and lows along the way, all of which are shaping us into the people of God that we are today. It has also been wonderful to work alongside Graham and, of course, Jim. (This side of it I will miss MASSIVELY!) So basically, I am taking some time to reflect, breathe and listen, and to try to discern God’s will for me next. Lots and lots of love from

Jane (Although a new warden was elected at the meeting on 23rd March, the legal handover does not occur until the Archdeacon’s Visitation in May.)

Mid-week Eucharist at St John’s Friday Mornings 8.30am Followed by breakfast. After the service Stuart will remain in the church until 10.30am for anyone who wants an informal chat with the vicar.

EASTER AT ST JOHN’S UNPACKED A quick glance at the Calendar will give you a good indication of “What’s On” during Holy Week and Easter – but might lead you to ask what that particular service is all about… So here is a summary of what is planned, for you to make an informed decision about which services to attend. Try coming to a service you haven’t attended before! However you spend Holy Week and Easter, make time to practise the presence of God – whether through a church service or not. You’ll find that Easter Day takes on a deeper significance as a result.

PALM SUNDAY 13TH APRIL 10am Palm Sunday Celebration (9.45am at St John’s School, Goodwyns Road) Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday – the day when we remember Jesus and his followers entering Jerusalem, to the excitement of the crowds. We start the service outside the school. It’s a great experience to have that sense of procession before entering the church. It is quite an experience to walk through the village as a church (adults and children alike), and remind ourselves of how much more emotional Jesus must have felt.

MONDAY 14TH 8pm Brockham Choral Society A Meditation in words and music on the Passion Easter anthems, carols and congregational hymns together with appropriate readings.

TUESDAY 15TH APRIL 8pm Service of Hope Anyone missing someone precious who has died will know that the ache is present throughout the year, but that it feels even more acute when festivals – such as Christmas and Easter – come around. Each Easter, though, we offer a Service of Hope which looks at the Easter message of new life with God. The service is open to anyone. You don’t have to be a churchgoer; neither does 10

the bereavement have to be recent or connected with St John’s in any way. The service is less than an hour long.

WEDNESDAY 16TH APRIL 8pm Sacred Space Holy Communion. A quiet, contemplative, Communion service in the midst of the busyness of preparing for Easter.

MAUNDY THURSDAY 17TH APRIL 8pm Maundy Thursday Eucharist If you want worship which combines spiritual presence, power and pathos all in one service, then come to this. From its direct reminder of the Last Supper, through to the recalling of Jesus in the loneliness of Gethsemane – this is a deeply moving service. Nothing prepares you for Good Friday quite so well as seeing the church stripped bare in front of your eyes….

GOOD FRIDAY 18TH APRIL 10.50am Churches Together in Dorking Procession This is an essential and powerful part of Good Friday for many across our churches. The procession begins at Dorking Halls Car Park (at 11am) and ends outside St Martin’s (service 11.30). The sight of all churches walking together speaks for itself.

2pm Stations of the Cross Most services at St John’s follow a set liturgy – this one is the exception. It isn’t ‘clergy led’ or indeed ‘clergy planned’ – which makes it very special. Instead, you will experience a service which will touch you at many levels, from what you are seeing and hearing to the thoughts prompted in consequence.

HOLY SATURDAY 19TH APRIL 10.00am Easter Experience at Chart Downs The Easter story with activities for children. 11

10.00am Saturday – Decorating the Church Technically this is not a service, but those people who decorate the church for Easter are showing their own reverence to God. You don’t need to be an expert in flower arranging, just someone willing to come along and take part. Check the details with Eileen Daulman (01306 885943).

1pm – 4pm National Trust Easter Egg Hunt and Teas at the Church Again not a service, but just good fun. Starting from the Church this hunt goes over the common. Details are in the National Trust article. Teas will be available in the Parish Room.

EASTER DAY - SUNDAY 20TH APRIL A choice here….

5.30am Dawn Service, followed by breakfast For some this service is the Easter highlight! There is nothing quite like the feeling of starting worship outside the church, in the last few minutes of darkness and then seeing the light of dawn fill the church. It’s extraordinary and if you’re wondering why we do it, it is because John’s Gospel reminds us that Mary Magdalene visited the tomb of Jesus in darkness (and, of course, found it empty) but then encountered him in the garden after the dawn. So this service welcomes Easter Day by taking us from darkness to light, finishing with breakfast (your first hot cross bun of the day!).

8am Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer) If you enjoy the traditional Prayer Book service, or if you are planning to head off to spend the day elsewhere, this 8am service is for you.

10am Easter Celebration Eucharist Our main celebration of the day! All ages welcome! Come and join us, to celebrate the Resurrection with joy! Whatever your choice of service(s), we look forward to seeing you over Holy Week and Easter. 12

Summary of the PCC Meeting held on Tuesday 4th March 2014 SAFEGUARDING The safeguarding checklist was provided by Gill Collins and she explained the changes that had been implemented in safeguarding procedures. Gill is standing down but currently there is no replacement as safeguarding officer. Should no one be appointed then Stuart Tanswell becomes the officer. Stuart thanked Gill for her hard work and her valuable contribution to the Parish. COMMUNITY BUILDING Graham Phillips advised that an online application of the pro-forma application document was made to Mole Valley District Council Building Control on Thursday 27th February and was followed by the posting of the hard copies of all the large size documentation required on Friday 28th February. Graham expressed thanks to John Phillips for the building services design work and calculations that he undertook, without fee, as his contribution to the project. Graham also advised that it will be four to five weeks from submission before a decision is known. The architect does not want to make a faculty application until we know the result from Building Control, so that he can include any modifications that may be required. As soon as the Building Regulations application is granted an application will be made to the diocese for approval. FUNDRAISING The following events had been suggested: • Curry evening on 28th April at the Red Chilli Restaurant • A Barn Dance around Harvest time More details will follow in due course. TREASURER’S REPORT Lynn Jennings provided copies of her report for the 12 months up to 31st December 2013 and this is available if anyone would like a detailed copy. 16

PCC MEMBERS The PCC was updated on those wishing to stand down and those who are willing to stand for election for 2014/15 onwards. ANY OTHER BUSINESS There were several items that needed discussion: • Gordon Bate’s Permission to Officiate as a lay reader needed renewing. The PCC supported Stuart in his request that Gordon continues his ministry. • The diocese had written asking if the parish might be interested in a loan scheme that the diocese is considering setting up. It was generally agreed that such a scheme would be helpful to the parish and more information would be welcomed. • Margaret Teale had finished a bereavement course that was part of her Pastoral Assistant training. She advised of a low maintenance group that had been started elsewhere in the diocese that met informally once a month and was for carers, divorced and others who felt isolated. She suggested starting one in the parish and suggested that the group be called Next Step. It was felt by the PCC to be very worthwhile and setting up such a group locally was enthusiastically supported. • Stuart advised that a couple of grant applications had been submitted for church repairs but because we only have rough estimates of building costs it was proving difficult to obtain grants. ARCHDEACONS’ ARTICLES OF ENQUIRY The Archdeacons had asked that the PCC should discuss the following: a) Please share several encouragements which your parish has received during the past year b) What difficult challenges have you had to face as a parish in the last twelve months? c) Given your hopes for the life of your parish in the next twelve months, what help and support would you value from the Diocese? These questions were discussed and answers suggested which are detailed in the full minutes of the meeting. Caroline Lazenby 17

When Walsingham came to Guildford On the 22nd February a group from St. John’s, all past pilgrims to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk, enjoyed a Walsingham Day of Celebration much closer to home. We were not alone. It was lovely to see the Cathedral filled to capacity with visitors from all over the south east, some no doubt tasting the Walsingham experience for the first time. With the sun casting a welcome glow over proceedings, the day’s programme included some of the main features of a visit to Walsingham, and began with the processional entrance of the Image of Our Lady providing a focus for worship. The Eucharist service in the morning was followed in the afternoon by the Rite of Sprinkling, with water from the Well at Walsingham, and Healing Ministries. It was a wonderful day; thanks to everyone involved in this event. For us it provided refreshment and a reminder of all that is special about Walsingham. (The next parish visit to Walsingham will take place on 12th September 2014.)

FUNDS The total available for the Community Building Appeal now stands at just over ÂŁ300,000 Our rough estimate of the total cost of the building is ÂŁ300,000. This means that we have at last reached our target figure. We have now submitted plans to Mole Valley District Council for building regulation approval. Then we can start getting quotes from builders and approval from the diocese.

ST JOHN'S C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL A busy month at St John's, the highlight of which was an encouraging report from our “Mocksted”. We had a full day inspection from an Ofsted inspector, which was organised by the Diocese to report on the school’s progress since the last inspection. We were pleased that the report showed that the school is making progress in all areas. The inspector also had some really positive and encouraging comments about the school. You can read the full report on the school website www.stjohnsdorking.surrey.sch.uk One of the exciting new developments for St John’s children has been pottery classes! Eventually we hope to be able to use a kiln in the Holmwood Building which hasn’t seen the light of day for many a year. Obviously it needs vigorous testing and an overhaul before it can be used, so in the meantime Mrs Carter has fired the children's creations. Mrs Carter is one of our growing band of volunteers, sharing her skills with pupils. We also have helpers with reading, knitting and gardening! If you have a talent you could share please contact Michelle Smith who co-ordinates all volunteers. Jenny Crook

HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk VPA Spring Show Saturday 12th April, South Holmwood Village Hall Hall opens 8.30am; exhibits to be in place 11am Show opens to the public 2pm until 3.30pm The VPA Spring Show is a couple of weeks later than usual this year, because the snowy winters we have experienced in recent years have meant a lack of spring blooms in mid-March. Naturally this alteration to the show date has resulted in no snow whatsoever falling this winter and all the daffs coming out at the end of February. Still, no matter – tulips are my favourite flower and hopefully this year they will be the stars of the show. There are all the usual horticultural, flower arranging, baking, preserving, craft and photographic categories to get your teeth into, along with the children’s classes. The change of date has meant the Spring Show falls in the school Easter holidays, so decorating an egg; creating a flower picture; knocking up a fruit crumble or fashioning a picture of a cartoon character may provide five minutes amusement away from a screen, if boredom is already weighing heavy, with the added bonus of a potential cash prize. All the classes in the Spring Show are detailed on the VPA website, or if you are a member, on the paper copy delivered to your door. For all you uberorganised villagers, drop your completed entry form in to Show Secretary Peta Rackett at 4 Oakdale, Mill Road, South Holmwood, RH5 4NR by 6.30pm on Thursday 10th April, while those of a slightly more laid back persuasion can just bring your exhibits along on the morning of the Show. Ros Treliving ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* STOP PRESS! ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* To mark the 70th Anniversary of the Holmwood VPA Summer Show, we have re-created the legendary Dorking Sauce, which brings (according to the 1868 label discovered at the Dorking Museum) a “peculiar and agreeable piquancy” to any dish. Enjoy a cheeky taster at the Dorking Sauce stall at the Spring Show, with bottles available to purchase and take home – after all, peculiar is set to be THE gourmet taste this summer! 33

DORKING GARDENERS’ CLUB This year the Dorking Gardeners’ Club are again holding their three flower shows in North Holmwood Village Hall. The first one - our Spring Show - will take place on Saturday 5th April at 2.30pm. The Rose and Early Summer Show will be held on Saturday 7th June, followed by The Summer Flower & Produce Show on Saturday 13th September. All are welcome. Please make a note in your diary now. As well as fine displays of flowers, plants and vegetables there are flower arrangements and junior sections. We are hoping to include a display of handicrafts at the June show. This year we are going to ask the public to vote for the best exhibit and a small prize will be given to the winner. The September show includes a home produce section and a photographic competition. Home-made refreshments are available and a large selection of reasonably priced plants will be on sale. New members are always made very welcome. As well as the three shows, members have the opportunity to visit gardens during the summer and attend interesting lectures and social events during the winter. Membership is £7 per annum single, £9 per annum double and 50p per annum for children. The Membership Secretary is: Mrs J. Wenham, 1 Holmes Cottage, Pebble Hill Road, Betchworth, Surrey RH3 7BP Tel: 01737 841151. For all enquiries about the Flower Shows, please ring Mrs Anne Cole on 01306 740710.

HOLMWOOD WI At Holmwood WI our programme of speakers is as varied as it’s possible to make it. January saw us listening to Mark Davison’s Time for Tea tales, followed in February by an insight into Viv and Nicki’s hobby as talented crafters. In March Ruth Markus told us about Healthcare in Malawi. What a fascinating subject it was. Ruthie, a passionate speaker, guided us through the charity AMECA, Alex’s Medical and Education Clinic in Africa, set up in memory of her only son from its inception seven years ago. A tireless fundraiser, Ruth gave an emotive talk which prompted many questions from members. Our quizzers came in second at a recent WI evening and the February pub lunch was a success with 16 of us tucking in at the Six Bells, Newdigate. Our Scrabble and craft afternoons are becoming more and more popular with many knitters getting out their needles making Easter-related gifts for our Spring Fair. Our March Spring Fair and coffee morning was a traditional WI affair with mouth-watering refreshments, a warm welcome and plenty of packed stalls to look around. In early summer we are looking forward to outings, visiting Blenheim Palace and Brighton, as well as our usual very popular garden meeting in July. These activities and many more await anyone who would like to join us. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 2.30pm in the village hall, South Holmwood. MUSIC IN DORKING - APRIL 2014 by Ian Codd 3rd 10th 17th at 1.00, Lunchtime recitals at St Martin’s, free, 01306 742629 3rd 10th 17th 24th at 8.30, Watermill Jazz at Friends Life, £17-20, 07415 815784 4th at 7.30, Vienna Festival Ballet at Dorking Halls, £19-22, 01306 881717 5th at 7.30, clarinet & piano at Dorking Halls, £15, 01306 740619 5th at 7.30, Brockham Choral Society at St Martin’s, £15 10th 11th 12th at 7.30, Leith Hill Festival at Dorking Halls, £8-20, 01403 240093 13th at 5.00, Messiah at St Martin’s, free 28th at 7.15, ballet screening at Dorking Halls, £17, 01306 881717

Choral music features strongly this month, with the competitions and concerts of the Leith Hill Musical Festival plus performances by the choir of St Martin’s and by Brockham Choral Society. The Leith Hill Festival competitions begin at 9am each day and people are most welcome to drop in and listen to the choirs during the morning. After the excitement and tensions of competing, the choirs then join together for the evening concert under the baton of Brian Kay. The music this year covers a wide range, the main works being: Mozart’s Missa Brevis and Paul Carr’s Requiem for an Angel (Thur), Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, which as someone remarked is neither small nor solemn, nor particularly liturgical! (Friday), and Duruflé’s Requiem and John Rutter’s Feel the Spirit (Saturday). As someone currently rehearsing the last two with my choir, I can vouch that the Duruflé Requiem is absolutely beautiful while John Rutter’s piece - a cycle of spirituals for soprano, choir and orchestra - is both moving and exciting. All the concerts deserve a full house.

At St Martin’s church, Martin Ellis will mark the start of Holy Week by directing a performance of Handel’s great oratorio The Messiah. Martin regards Messiah as an opera in all but name, viewing the whole work as a series of dramatic scenes, and he intends that the performance will take a fresh approach and emphasise the dramatic nature of the work. The four soloists are Heather Caddick (soprano), Elspeth Marrow (alto), James Lister (tenor) and John Holland Avery (bass) - all have sung in lunchtime concerts at St Martin’s and James is a member of the church choir. Admission is free with a retiring collection. Brockham Choral Society present an evening of Mozart and Bach, with Mozart’s Solemn Vespers and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, and Bach’s Magnificat. They will be supported by four professional soloists and the Chameleon Arts Orchestra. Tickets can be bought in advance from Frith’s in South Street or via the choir’s website. The Dorking Concertgoers Society present an evening of music for clarinet and piano, with Kimon Parry and Tony Ingham. Their programme includes Brahms’ sonata in F minor, a substantial work from his later years, Debussy’s first Rhapsody, Rachmaninov’s hauntingly beautiful Vocalise, and Gerald Finzi’s Five Bagatelles. The Vienna Festival Ballet will be coming to Dorking to perform Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, one of the best-loved of all ballets. Also the Dorking Halls will be broadcasting live the Royal Ballet’s production of A Winter’s Tale, based on Shakespeare’s play. Each Thursday lunchtime there is a recital at St Martin’s with lunch available beforehand in the Christian Centre. This month’s performers are: Martin Ellis giving his 154th organ recital (3rd), organist Alexander Binns (10th), and Harry Baker and Zoe Everson with Martin Ellis (17th). On Thursday evenings Watermill Jazz meets at the Friends Life social club. Watermill Jazz has just celebrated its twentieth anniversary and is still continuing to attract top jazz talent to Dorking. This month’s line-up is: the Frank Harrison Trio (3rd), Omar Puente’s Latin Jazz Quartet (10th), Ken Peplowski and Julian Marc Stringle with the Craig Milverton Trio (17th), and the Kate Williams Septet (24th). 40

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust April 2014

News from the Common Ranger’s Reports What a difference a few days of sunshine can make. Brimstone and Red Admiral butterflies fluttering about, birds singing all day long and our woolly hats consigned to the wardrobe. In fact it has become so dry, so quickly, that where we have been clearing and burning near Mill Bottom Lane, there is now a danger of setting fire to last year’s desiccated bracken! Although this work looks very dramatic – large oak trees being felled, stacks of firewood and timber lying around – we are only clearing a relatively small area. Most of the new open space will be the result of removing bracken. The firewood will be sold to help fund further work on the Common and any usable timber will be taken to a nearby Trust workshop where it will be sawn and stacked … perhaps to make its way back to the Common as signposts or benches. I was entranced recently by the sight of three Common Buzzards (Buteo buteo) slowly circling a couple of hundred feet up over the Fourwents Pond area. They are the most common raptor in the UK and easily identifiable by their size with a wingspan of up to about 130cm, fan-shaped tail and mewing call. The collective noun for a group of buzzards is a “wake” and they mate for life. Rob Adam, Ranger, Holmwood Common. Friends of Holmwood Common: Annual General Meeting Members of the Friends welcomed two new members to the Committee, re-elected one other and said thank you to three others that are retiring. Del Rasmussen of North Holmwood and Keith Goodenough from South Holmwood are the newcomers to the Committee. Amongst the retirees and following long service for the Friends, most recently as Chairman when she led many important changes, was Elizabeth Cotton. The new Chairman of the Friends is David Lloyd of South Holmwood. 43

Sam Bayley and Rob Adam of the National Trust presented an overview of the current work programmes on the Common and some very helpful insight into the NT's plans for managing the Common over the next few years. Members of the Friends should, by now, have received a copy of the Spring 2014 Newsletter with a longer report of the AGM and the National Trust's plans for Holmwood Common. Friends’ Working Day – Saturday 5th April Saturday 5th April is our next Friends’ Working Day when we hope that you will join our team to assist the regular NT Volunteers with the current major project of scrub clearing. We look forward to welcoming workers of all ages: men, women, girls and boys (under16’s will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult) and you may choose to join us for the whole day (10:00 to 15:00) or just until lunchtime (10:00 to 13:00). See below for further details. Holmwood Common Photography Class at the VPA Summer Show Once again the Friends are sponsoring one of the photography classes in the VPA Summer Show on Saturday 2nd August. For 2014 the subject is “Holmwood Common: People”. There’s still plenty of time for you to plan that winning picture and perhaps it would make a great project as you enjoy the longer days that mark the arrival of Spring-time on the Common. We look forward to publishing the winning entries in the Friends’ newsletter. Leith Hill Place Re-opens for 2014 on Friday 4th April. Our continuing theme this term is ‘shapes and sizes’. This has been promoted by lots of craft activities like bubble blowing, clay modelling, painting with shapes and junk modelling. During this month new resources from Community Play Things arrived in large boxes. The children enjoyed playing inside them – at one point all 22 children were in a box! We tasted haggis for Burns Nights, made Welsh flags and drew leeks and daffodils for St David’s Day, made lanterns and tried Chinese writing for the Chinese New Year. On Shrove Tuesday the children learnt how to make pancakes and tried some. The children soon break up for Easter and, on the last day of term, they will be singing songs and will have a bake sale. If you are interested in our Pre-School please feel free to call in and see us at the Village Hall. Children can join us from the start of the term after they are two years old. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 9.15am to 12.15pm. If you would like an information pack or to arrange a visit, please contact the Pre-School leader, Julia Woollard, on 07931 212006. AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT February / March – (100th Article) Despite all the misgivings expressed before the start there was no doubt the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia was a huge success; the venues were pristine and even the closing ceremony was tastefully choreographed. Russia finished top of the medals table with 33 medals including 13 gold, though the British achievement was a lot smaller: Lizzie Yarnold, the skeleton heroine was our only Gold, the male curling team won a silver, the female curlers a bronze and Jenny Jones, the snowboard slope style veteran, won a bronze medal; it was our best performance since 1924. It was 50 years ago on 25th February that 22 year old Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali) beat big hitter Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title of the world. Clay went on to become Ali the greatest, perhaps the most recognisable person in the world, and at 72 years of age still lives on though suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Following their terrible performance in the Ashes tests in Australia, England’s cricketers continued their losing streak by losing their first one day international against the West Indies by 15 runs. Once again it was a match they should have won after their opening batsman Michael Lumb made a century. At last England managed to win a cricket match when they beat West Indies by three wickets in the second match of the series in Antigua on Sunday 2nd March and then went on to win the deciding third match by 25 runs. However, once again England’s bowlers allowed West Indies to recover – this time from 80 runs for five wickets to 278 runs all out. Perhaps Morten Olsen, the Danish football team manager, summed up England’s performance against Denmark on Wednesday 5th March when he wished England luck at the World Cup in Brazil and added: “You’ll need it”. The listless, boring first half was inexcusable. The second half was a little brighter with Sturridge 51

heading in the only goal of the match but at times it was difficult not to turn the television off. Manchester City beat Sunderland to win the Capitol One Cup Final three goals to one. We always like the underdogs to win and it looked possible when Sunderland scored first in a heroic first half. What a fantastic rugby football tournament the Six Nations has been, even down to the last game when Ireland held on by the skin of their teeth to beat France 22 points to 20, dashing England’s hopes of winning the championship silverware. If France had won then England would have claimed the title as both they and Ireland started the day with three wins apiece. England were given hope when France scored in the 78th minute but the try was disallowed for a forward pass. A nail biting climax to a great game. However, Ireland’s win did give a fairy tale ending to the retirement of Brian O’Driscoll who had played his 141st and last game for his country. England had previously collected the Triple Crown Trophy when they beat Wales 29 points to 18 at Twickenham on Sunday 9th March, following victories over Scotland and Ireland. The football genius, Sir Tom Finney, died on 14th February aged 91, and that other great footballer, Sir Bobby Charlton, said of him, “Tom did not suffer fools gladly but he kept such feelings to himself. He never spoke ill of anyone and I never heard anyone speak ill of him. A magnificent footballer. A marvellous man.”

BIBLE ‘D’s Can you find all the answers to this Bible quiz? All the words begin with the letter D. Answers at the bottom of the page.

DAISIES

1 A tribe of Israel.

There is an old saying ‘when you can stand on seven daisies at once then spring has come’. I like daisies with their bright yellow middles and tiny petals. If you look closely, you’ll see that not all the daisies in any lawn will be white; some of them are edged with pink. When I was little I asked my mum why and she told me this story to explain why.

2 He spent the night with some lions. 3 Where Saul was going when he met Jesus on the road. 4 Followers of Jesus. 5 These made Joseph unpopular with his brothers. 6 A famous king of Israel who played the harp.

On that first Easter morning, when Jesus walked in the garden and was seen by Mary and the other women who thought he was a gardener, his bare feet touched just some of the daisies in the grass. And because he still had the wounds in his feet his blood touched the daisies and marked their petals pink.

How do dinosaurs pass exams? With extinction. What is the main ingredient of dog biscuits? Collie flour.

I love this story and still to this day I feel sorry for the daisies that Jesus didn’t touch - because when Jesus touches our lives all things change and spring comes into our hearts forever.
