Dear friends, I don’t quite know what to make of this last month – terrorist attacks, the fire in the Grenfell Tower flats, a General Election with a minority government, a delayed opening of Parliament - and that’s without the beginning of Brexit talks. With so much of this, there is a maybe understandable tendency to put one group against another – whether that might be Conservatives against Labour, Christians against Muslims, rich against poor, the UK against the EU, or any other combination. But is that idea of division the best way to deal with things? The Grenfell Tower fire began at night. Since it is currently Ramadam, Muslims had been fasting all day – and so were still up after breaking their fast. In other words, they were having something to eat and drink after eating nothing all day. It meant that they were up and able to come to the aid of others immediately, and this is a group which many people view with suspicion. At the start of June the church celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came upon those first followers of Jesus. One of the effects of it was that everyone heard other people speaking in their own language. No matter what someone’s background, they could hear the same thing. Everyone came together, everyone was equal, everyone was empowered, by the Holy Spirit. That is what we need today. Rather than finding reasons to separate us from other people, we need to find those things which bring us together. Rather than being suspicious of those who are different, we need to rejoice in the variety and learn from each other. Rather than trying to exploit each other and get the best result for ourselves regardless of the cost to others, we need to see a bigger picture – of what will bring the best result overall. At Pentecost, all peoples present were brought together. In this divided country, may we put aside the things which divide us and instead come together in the same way today. Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart 5

Ordinands Offering You may have noticed (or may not have) that the regular Ordinands Offering in the Spire has not appeared in recent months. This is simply because neither of us have had time! As we approach the end of our first year the volume of work has ramped up considerably, the amount of reading is never ending and we hardly seem to have any free time. Despite all that we are on the most wonderful journey and having an amazing time. We have recently got back from a four day residential Summer School, with all the current ordinands in training in the three separate year groups. We stayed in the beautiful surroundings of Wychcroft, the Southwark Diocesan retreat house, and we were blessed with wonderful sunshine, fabulous hospitality and the fellowship of others at various stages of the road to ordination. It is very affirming and encouraging to get to know the year twos and threes (those being ordained in July) and knowing they felt just like us in the first year - overwhelmed, apprehensive and needing a pinch! The theme of the four days was “Presence and Engagement” and we heard from a variety of people about how to engage with all walks of life in the community. We have both come back with massive enthusiasm and equally massive “To Do” lists. It is so hard to believe we will soon be second years and other people will be feeling like we were last September. We know that we are both surrounded by a wall of prayer made up of so many people and the love, support and interest of everyone is invaluable. So please, continue to pray for us, as we continue to discern what God wants from us in this place.

From Capt John Bruce Worsfold CA TSSF AJ Cronin, the famous author, told a story in his autobiography about two boys: one was very rich and the other very poor. They spent a great deal of time together. One day the rich boy said, ‘When I grow up I am going to become a monk’. The poor boy replied, ‘I will become a monk too and be with you’. ‘You can’t become a monk; you have very little learning.’ When the rich boy grew up he did indeed join a famous Benedictine monastery and became a great preacher. People from all over the world came to the monastery to hear him preach. The poor boy did follow his friend into the monastery and became a lay brother; he worked in the kitchen and in the garden and did many menial tasks, spending hours in prayer. Whereas the preaching monk became more and more famous, the lay brother remained unknown. Every time the preaching monk preached though, there in the front pew sat the lay brother. The monks would often see each other in the church or even in passing, but the preaching brother never spoke to the lay brother. The preacher became more and more famous; his sermons held people’s attention. He enjoyed the fame his preaching gave him. He was number one. One day when he mounted the pulpit steps, the church was packed as usual. In the pulpit he looked at the vast crowd but when he started to preach he wasn’t able to say a word. He collapsed in the pulpit. The other monks helped him to the vestry; he asked where the lay brother was, who was always in the front row? He was told that he had died the previous week. The preaching brother then had a stroke and was ill for a long time. He spent much time thinking about his friend and knew beyond all doubt, that it was through his poor friend’s prayers that he had been given the gift of preaching. He began to realise too that he himself wasn’t number one at all. The lay brother was. He gradually got better but he never preached again. He would often be seen kneeling by the grave of his poor friend, praying that he would have that great gift of humility that his friend had had. 11

I have been a committed member of the Anglican Church for many years, but it is only during the last ten years or so that I have come to realise that to be number one is nothing and doesn't really matter at all. When I first joined the First Order of the Society of St Francis I used to think I was the best thing since sliced bread. It was nice to be important, but I soon came to the conclusion that it’s more important to be nice. If you’re one of those who think you’ve been cheated because no one sees you as important, or part of the inner circle or number one, don’t upset yourself. Be like the lay brother listening and praying and just doing the menial tasks that enables the church to run smoothly. Be grateful that in God’s eyes you are and have always been His number one. I know that when I leave this world and go home to God, after ten or twenty years I will be forgotten by so many people; but I will never be forgotten by my Creator. In God's eyes we are all number ones. So if you’re getting upset because you’re not one of the in crowd, one of those who you think are important in St John’s, don’t keep worrying about it. You’re still part of God’s in crowd.

Holmwoods Mothers’ Union We held our meeting on the first Monday in June. Unfortunately Elizabeth was not able to be with us due to John’s illness and we missed her very much. We began our meeting with a silence for the people caught up in the acts of terror on London Bridge, Borough Market and Manchester. After MU prayers we welcomed the Revd Virginia Smith, curate at Saint Mary Magdalene, to speak of her path to ordination. She gave us a riveting talk describing her life from childhood and Sunday School through the ups and downs of her life to retirement from school teaching. She then embraced a new career path, firstly with the Brigitte Trust and then a Licensed Lay Reader Course, coming to the decision that she wanted to be ordained. Though she did have some personal doubts about her age, the Bishop told her he would be the judge of that. Now for eight years we have enjoyed her friendship and wonderful pastoral care at South Holmwood. The Bishop was quite right to quash her doubts. Virginia was asked about her work as a chaplain at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey. She gave us a resume of how she came to be there and what she does. After the talk we moved on to lunch, planning future meetings and chat. The next meeting will be the Summer Lunch at noon on 3rd July when Antonia Wilson, Diocesan President, will be with us. In August we shall meet on Monday 7th. We hope also to have a Quiet Day that month. Then we shall be back to normal on Monday 4th September when Revd Derek Tighe, Rector of St Martin’s, will join us.

Prayer along the Way Father, We have so many questions. Life is sometimes difficult and we can’t see our way. Thank you for Jesus who told us He is the Way. It doesn’t matter if we don’t always understand as long as we are on your special Way – in relationship with you through your precious Son, who died on the cross to make that possible. Help us to join the Way by putting our trust in what Jesus has done. Help us to make it easy for others to find the Way – to find Jesus. Please give us revelation to know the right words to use and the right actions to take to draw people to you. We ask in Jesus name and for your glory alone, Amen.

Dorking Area Foodbank 2 years on #more than food dorkingarea.foodbank.org.uk It’s now two years since the Dorking Area Foodbank opened its doors for the very first time. In those 24 months, we’ve provided over 2100 emergency food parcels – of which 890 went to feed children. We are seeing an increasing level of demand and have had some very busy afternoons in the Distribution Centre recently (as well as some quiet ones – the volunteers never know quite what to expect!). Our umbrella organisation, the Trussell Trust which runs over 400 foodbanks across the UK is 20 years old this year. They are reporting increasing numbers too, with over a million food parcels given out in 2016/17. The Trust is running a national initiative, tagged #more than food, and locally we are offering additional services to help our clients address the problems which have led them to the foodbank. An advisor from Citizens Advice now attends most sessions at the Distribution Centre and provides advice across a range of issues from benefit problems to housing. In addition, the foodbank is working with the local branch of CAP, a Christian organisation which has a great track record in helping people with debt problems. Pop - Ups Following a successful trial, pop ups have been run at the Dorking Children’s Centre for one or two days during the Christmas, Easter and half term holidays and have been much appreciated by the families who attended. Working with CAP to help address debt problems Debt and low income are among the most common causes of hunger in the UK. The Trussell Trust has recently joined forces with CAP (Christians Against Poverty) to help foodbank clients with debt problems. Here, Dorking Area Foodbank is working with the local CAP debt centre. 23

What is CAP? Since it was founded in 1996, CAP has helped many individuals and families get out of debt and then remain debt free. A recent survey of 1200 debt clients showed 93% were able to feed their family, after they used the free debt management service offered by the charity. A debt coach visits people in the privacy of their own homes and then CAP helps by dealing with creditors, negotiating affordable payments and working out a realistic budget with the clients. Usually a CAP plan is set up for the client to make a single weekly or monthly payment to cover bills and debts. CAP distribute this on the client’s behalf. This plan can be used until all bills and debts are paid off and also as a way of building up savings. In extreme cases, CAP can help with insolvency options. In other parts of the UK, CAP also offers Money Courses to help people budget, Job Clubs to help people find work and CAP Release to help people with addiction problems. HOLMWOOD WI First there was disappointment - our speaker from BLESMA, the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen Association cancelled at the last minute: then delight - as Jackie Fry agreed to join us with her talk Recycle, Renew, from discarded materials to treasured heirlooms. Members of Holmwood WI arrived for their June meeting and were greeted by a table full of patchwork quilts, rag rugs and various other articles made by our creative speaker Jackie. Jackie led us through her family, dad, mum, husband and children, as she explained the reasons why each item had been made. One beautiful blue quilt started as a crib cover (never finished), became a cot cover (never finished), became a single bed cover (again never finished) but eventually after 20 years became a double bed cover which is used every winter. Fabric ranged from maternity dresses, children’s clothes, jeans and many more. We were captivated as Jackie explained how she made her mother a cushion cover from her girl’s outgrown dresses, as now living abroad, she wanted her mother to be part of their lives. The most emotive items were two knitted blankets given to her daughters as they left for university. Each contained squares depicting their favourite hobbies and keepsakes. What a lovely idea. We thanked Jackie for stepping in at the last minute and hope to see her again with another of her inspiring talks. Members continue to keep busy with outings, pub lunches, social afternoons and our popular garden meeting in August. In July we look forward to learning more about Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn when the Revd Dr Nicholas Henderson visits us with his talk Fortitude and Fancy. Please join us as our guest. We meet on the first Wednesday afternoon each month at the village hall in South Holmwood from 2.30pm. For more information contact our secretary, Maureen Lewington, on 01306 882057 or email maureen.lewington@btinternet.com 29

HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk Sunshine, wind, rain, thunder, sunshine…..we’ve had a real mix recently! Summer seems to be happening in short bursts, with reminders of autumnal days in between. It certainly makes for some impressive weeds. Where do they get that energy from?! One day there’s nothing, the next there’s an unknown, uninvited hoard of green taking a firm hold in the flower beds. You have to admire their tenacity! They are a sure fire way to guarantee your nail brush is kept in full time work……no matter how thick the gloves, there’s always dirt under my nails at the end of a weeding session! But it’s worth it. What an abundance of colour and sweet scent nature gives us, year after year, with a bit of help from us but most of the work hers. Not to mention all the fruit and vegetables we 35

nurture until we can harvest and enjoy them. It’s been a great year so far. If the rainfall is plentiful we may well have some giant pumpkins again. Last time they got more than a bit out of hand. One plant was discovered growing fifteen foot up a tree, complete with the giveaway orange fruit. Surely it would have had an easier time staying horizontal?! The other plants produced three enormous fruits. So big, in fact, that there was only room on the back seat of my car for two. They were quite impressive, but took hours to carve. We had a break from them last year. This year the normal, slightly more controllable ones are growing - unless the seed packet was wrong. Time will tell. (I secretly hope it was…those giants were great fun!) Holiday time is looming for many of you, hopefully the weeds will slow down a bit and not take you too much by surprise on your return! They do seem to grow faster when we don’t look for them for a few days! Are you venturing to distant shores? Or discovering somewhere closer? We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful country to explore, with such varied landscapes to enjoy. The last time I left the country was twenty years ago; life seems to have kept us grounded since then! Not that I mind, there’s always too much to do to go far. Usually in the form of hungry livestock, who, despite having lush green pasture still insist they will starve without a bucket of feed every day. Starve?! Not likely! Spoilt rotten more like… Just how it should be! Plus with a new puppy keeping us busy we won’t be going far for a while yet. He’s worth it, even if he is a cheeky one! He certainly keeps his big brother on his toes….and snoring in his bed at the end of the day. Enjoy the summer, whatever it holds for you. But if you do go away to sunny climes and then bump in to me on your return, don’t stand too close. You’ll probably make me look pale….. A report on our Summer Show will follow in the next magazine, keep an eye out! In the meantime, have a look at the website for all sorts of information www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk Happy holidays!

DORKING MUSEUM IN JULY - AUGUST Our summer exhibition, “Time Gentlemen Please! The story of Dorking pubs”, explores the growth and decline of Dorking’s pubs and beerhouses over the centuries, and the individual establishments that have graced its streets, revealing many of the town’s ‘lost inns’. A map plots their locations, with old photographs, paintings and drawings of how they looked, modern photographs of what is there now, and a selection of pub memorabilia. Families are welcome – there is a pub sign drawing competition for children and a chance to try your hand at some old pub games. Bring added life to the story with our Gallery Talk on Thursday 30th July, Exhibition organiser, David Langford, talks about the changing face of Dorking pubs from earliest records to the present day. This takes in pubs that have changed over the years and the many ‘lost’ inns, revealing their history, the variety of roles many of them played in the lives of residents and travellers, and colourful stories of individual establishments, their landlords, clientele and activities. At Dorking Museum, 62 West Street, 7.00pm, doors open 6.30pm, entry £5 on the door, includes a glass of beer or Prosecco. Immerse yourself further with our new book: ‘Time Gentlemen, Please’: The Story of Dorking Pubs by David Langford and Jim Docking, modern photos by Royston Williamson, published by The Cockerel Press, price £9.50. It’s available from Dorking Museum shop and online, other local outlets and pubs. In more than 140 pages, based on extensive research, including previously unpublished material, the 41

reader will learn not only a great deal about the drinking establishments but also much about the town’s history and social life. The book looks at the forces that influenced their ups and downs and provides a detailed account of more than 50 establishments in and close to Dorking town. It includes archive images, modern photos and a fold-out map which helps to locate both the modern pubs and the ‘lost inns’. Guided Walks and Tours: The Museum’s guided walks and tours show some of the best that the area has to offer, all are available for group bookings at a time to suit you, and we hold regular Open Days for individual bookings. AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT May / June It was an emotive win for Manchester United football team when they beat Ajax 2 - 0 to clinch the Europa League Final in Stockholm on Wednesday 24th May. The game was played three days after that dreadful bombing atrocity in the Manchester Arena. The Manchester City Games which is marketed as bringing athletics to the people took place on Friday 26th May. There were crowds in Manchester’s Albert Square to watch Holly Bradshaw achieve a British record in the pole vault. Greg Rutherford won the long jump with an 8.18 metres leap. The FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Chelsea was an exciting game. Though Chelsea, the Premier League Champions, were the favourites to win Arsenal out played them winning 2 - 1. It was Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger’s seventh win of the Cup making him the most successful manager ever in this competition. Exeter Chiefs beat Wasps 23 points to 20 to become Rugby Union’s Premiership Champions. Two minutes before the end it looked as if Wasps were destined to win but two penalties awarded against them gave Exeter’s captain the opportunity to twice kick the ball over the posts for 6 points before 2 minutes of extra time were played. Lewis Hamilton said he couldn’t afford another Formula 1 result like this, when he finished seventh in the Monaco Grand Prix. The race was won by Sebastian Vettel driving for Ferrari who is now 25 points ahead in the driver standings. There was a strong feeling that Vettel was gifted his leading position when Ferrari took the unusual decision of calling his team mate Finn Kimi Raikkonen, who was in the lead, for his pit stop first. Two England under 20 football teams reached major international finals on the same day. The main under 20 team reached the World 45

cup after beating Italy 3 - 1. They played Venezuela in the final winning 1 – 0, helped by a penalty save from goal keeper Freddie Woodman. The under 20 B team overwhelmed Scotland 3 - 1 to reach the final of the prestigious Toulon tournament. They played the Ivory Coast in the final and won 5 - 3 on penalties after a 1 - 1 draw. Both teams felt on top of the world. Saturday 10th June was quite an amazing day for British sport:In a thrilling Scotland v England football World Cup qualifier England looked like losing 2 - 1 after Scotland had scored 2 goals from free kicks in added time. However, England’s skipper, Harry Kane, scored a brilliant late goal to maintain England’s qualifier record. In an incredible game of Rugby in which the lead changed six times, Eddie Jones’ England team beat Argentina 38 - 34. It was a remarkable win considering England had ten players who were playing their first game for their country. The British and Irish Lions had their first major win of their tour in New Zealand beating top provincial side Crusaders 12 - 3. England’s cricketers performed extremely well in the group stages of the Champions Trophy competition beating South Africa, New Zealand and Australia to secure their semi-final place. They played outsiders Pakistan in the semi-final and were favourites to win, only to be thrashed by eight wickets. There will no doubt be an inquest on what went wrong but it seemed they just could not adapt to the conditions.

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust July 2017

News from the Common The Natural Play Area, North Holmwood An estimated 200 people came along to celebrate the opening of the Natural Play Area ... and what a great afternoon was enjoyed by all. To the music of local band, The Courgettes, we munched our way through hot-dogs and home-made cakes, competed in the wild-flower quiz and the various classes of the Teddy Bear competition, made bird-feeders and shopped at the various craft stalls. A special thanks to the 18th Dorking Scout Group for all their help with staging the event. So the Natural Play Area is now open for you to visit. There is even a big oak table and benches so that you can take a picnic! We look forward to seeing your photos. Fly Tipping Towards the end of May we received an unwelcome visit with yet another fly-tip, this time in Scamells car park. This was a particularly large dump of building rubble and included some very distinctive stone guttering ... you may have seen the photos on our Facebook page. We are hoping that someone will recognise the stones and contact us so that we can attempt to track down the culprits. Update: Holmwood's Dormice Last month we reported on the dormouse that had been found in one of the special nest boxes that have been installed on Holmwood Common. The most recent news is that Ranger Sophie has now found a pair together in one box. As Sophie says, “Babies soon? Let’s hope!”

Ranger Rob’s Report June, July and August are probably the peak times for spotting butterflies and out of the fifty-nine species in the UK, we regularly record over twenty each year on the Common, indicating there is a range of habitats even though much of the Common looks the same. Holly Blues, for instance, as the name suggests, like holly, the larvae feed on the flower buds in Spring, whereas the Large Skipper likes tall, uncut grassy areas. White Admirals like shady, woodland rides whilst adult Purple Hairstreaks live high in the canopy of oak trees. Twenty or so species of butterfly should be reasonably easy to spot if you’re out on the Common a lot and if anyone is really keen, I can let you have a list of recorded sightings. I don’t think however, that we’ll start looking for moths, with over 2500 recorded species in the UK, I think that would be too much homework!

St IGNATIUS of LOYOLA 31st July The youngest of 13 children, Ignatius Loyola was born in Spain. When a young soldier he was badly wounded by a cannon ball that shattered his leg. As he recovered he asked for a best-selling book of the day, a romance, to read to take his mind off the pain but ended up reading about Jesus and the lives of the saints. His life changed as he resolved to continue being a soldier, but now as a soldier for Christ.

What kind of man was Boaz before he married? Ruthless.

Which Bible character had no parents? Joshua, son of Nun.

In 1534, at the age of 43, he and six others offered themselves to the service of the Catholic Church. They became the Society of Jesus and Ignatius was elected to serve as their first general. When other Jesuits were sent on various missions by the pope, Ignatius stayed in Rome founding homes for orphans and colleges - all, in the words of the Jesuit motto, ‘ad majorem Dei gloriam’, for the greater glory of God.
