Dear friends, As I write this in the middle of August, the Olympics are all over the news. Last time I checked, Team GB were second overall in terms of medals – between the USA and China. And, apparently, Berkshire (if it were a separate country) would be twelfth overall – I remember a similar thing said about Yorkshire during the last Olympics. After all that’s been going on this year with Brexit and tensions between different groups of people within the country, here is something which seems to be bringing people together. For me, it was summed up in a spoof newspaper front page “Muslim immigrant wears Union Jack as a hoodie” it proclaimed, bearing a photo of Mo Farah after winning Gold! During the Olympics it seems irrelevant whether the Team GB Olympian was born in Scotland, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Dogs, Northern Ireland, Somalia, or anywhere else – they are British (in Farah’s case he moved to the UK aged 8) and are on the same team. It doesn’t matter whether the Team GB Olympians are Christian, Muslim, atheist, agnostic, or a member of any other faith community – they are on the same team. It doesn’t matter whether the individual Team GB Olympians are male, female, young, old, straight, gay, or bisexual – they are all on the same team. All members of Team GB are seen as being British and are supported as one. Is that not a vision of how this country should be? Is that not a vision of how this community should be? Multicultural, embracing the diversity of humanity? Throughout Scripture we see this radical call to inclusivity – that all people matter, whoever they are, wherever they come from, whatever their baggage. All are valued, all are loved, all are important. As we move on from the Olympics there is the question of where do we go from here? How do we relate to those around us who are 5

different? Do we go back to being suspicious of those around us or do we embrace that radical inclusivity of the Gospel, shown so clearly in the Olympics? Wishing you every blessing,

St Michael’s Church, Betchworth, Surrey EX REIGATE GRAMMAR SCHOOL PUPIL TO GIVE ORGAN RECITAL AT BETCHWORTH Andrew Cantrill, one of the UK’s most experienced and versatile church musicians, is giving the next recital on the Kenneth Tickell organ in Betchworth Parish Church, on Saturday 1st October at 4.00pm. Andrew has very fond teenage memories of playing Betchworth’s previous organ. He very much likes Tickell organs and currently teaches on one. Andrew’s career has taken him to three continents, working in schools, churches and cathedrals, and he has appeared in some of the world’s most prestigious venues as conductor, organist and singer. He has held cathedral positions in Wellington, New Zealand and in Buffalo, USA and is now Organist of The Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, Suffolk. The programme for this recital will feature Scandinavian music built around a pair of Chaconnes (a baroque variation form) by the Danish composer, Buxtehude, as well as music by Sark (Denmark), Effestol and Grieg (Norway). The Norwegian pieces are particularly approachable and include the very well known ‘Wedding Day at Troldhaugen’, written by Griegas as a memorial of his and his wife Nina’s 25th Wedding anniversary. The recital will conclude with popular French music by Joseph Bonnet, Lefébure-Wély and Guilmant. Admission: £12 (Under 14s: £8) (includes glass of wine/soft drink). Tickets available from: 01737 843498 or betchworthchurchmusic@hotmail.co.uk or on the door on the day.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2016 I know that as I write this we are in the middle of the summer holidays but I thought that I’d remind you that as you read this, Christmas is less than six months away and we are already thinking about this year’s Christmas Tree Festival. For your diary, the dates will be 9th – 11th December. Friday 9th will be tree decorating day. We will be having another Cheese and Wine party with a short entertainment on that evening. Last year we had a couple of festive stalls which were well received. It would be lovely if we could have more stalls this year especially as our beautiful new Community Building will be open. If you would like to run a stall please contact Jackie. Those of you who wish to decorate your own three foot Christmas tree can be thinking of a theme for 2016. I shall be putting the slips for you to fill in into Church in the autumn. We have decided to have another Knitted Tree because so many people love it, although we did consider some alternative central attraction. 2016’s tree will be made up of knitted squares in pinks and purples with white highlights so if you have some leftover white wool you can use it again this year. You can choose any shade of pink or purple you like. Once again I include the knitting instructions for you! Have a lovely Summer and Happy knitting. Double knitting Aran wool Chunky wool

The Way I See It – THE JOY OF ORDINARY For those who attend to such ecclesiastical details, the Church is now in what it calls the ‘Ordinary Season’. It doesn’t mean it’s going to be bland, boring or predictable in church at the moment (or at any rate, no more than usual), but that following Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, there are no great festivals of the faith to celebrate until we get to Advent and that’s not till the end of November. For a few months, we can forget the high days and holidays and simply concentrate on, well, being ‘ordinary’. Personally, I find that rather encouraging. All my life I’ve been a person who enjoys the ordinary. Even on holidays which I’ve enjoyed, I’ve secretly looked forward to getting home and picking up the familiar routine. The dictionary defines ‘ordinary’ as ‘with no distinctive features, normal, usual’. Well, I think every day, ordinary, normal, usual life still includes plenty of ‘distinctive features’ – surprises, too. To me an impressive feature of the biblical gospels is how normal and ordinary most of it seems. Yes, there are those mighty acts of power which we call miracles but the setting of them is about as ‘ordinary’ as you could get: a cattle-shed, a lakeside, a fishing boat, a garden, a little girl’s bedroom, a wedding party. It’s in the rich raw world of the ordinary that God does wonderful things, just as it’s in the routine of daily life that kind words are spoken, the sick healed, the sad comforted. I’m sometimes more aware of God in these ‘ordinary’ settings than in the extraordinary splendour of a great cathedral. Long live the ‘ordinary’!

Mothers’ Union, The Holmwoods Branch Some of us joined 30 members and friends from across the deanery in a beautiful home and garden to spend a wonderful, thought filled day of praise and silence lead by Jane Hellier, “Celebration of Faith”. Jane’s own strong faith shone through as she talked of God sustaining us through the dark times as well as on the good days when it is easy to believe. At our August meeting at Joan Overton’s home we enjoyed a pleasant coffee morning and planned the meetings for the rest of this year. We almost always meet on the first Monday of the month and would be happy to welcome new members. On Monday 5th September at 10.30am we will meet at Iris Edser’s for coffee and to put together the final plans for the meeting on Monday 3rd October when we offer an open invitation to all who would be interested in the MU work in prisons. This year Prisons Week falls in October, the time when Churches are asked to remember and pray for all involved in the Justice system. We will meet at 12 noon. Revd Barbara Steadman-Allen will preside over a communion service followed by a soup and cheese lunch and a talk by Alison Ney who volunteers at HMPs Coldingley and Send and has been involved in work for MU and Prison Chaplains at diocesan and national level. Please let us know if you would like to come; everyone is welcome to join us for this day. On Monday 7th November we will share a special lunch, (£5.00); the proceeds will go to the Prison Work of MU in the diocese. We hope this may be in the newly opened North Holmwood Community Building. Also in November some of us will go to Diocesan Forum to hear about the first year of Antonia Wilson’s presidency. We will take donated toiletries for the Womens’ Refuges in the diocese. Newdigate Branch will lead a service of prayer in the Lady Chapel in Guildford Cathedral on Tuesday 6th December. We shall make this our meeting and drop off for Christmas Lunch on the way home. Mary Skinner, our longest standing member, will be 90 in October, matching the age of our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen. We congratulate Mary and wish her a very happy birthday.

THE NATIONAL PRAYER WEEKEND FRIDAY 23rd - SUNDAY 25th SEPTEMBER St John’s Church is taking part in this weekend, when local churches around the country will join together to pray for their community. At the heart of this weekend is the desire to see people in our local community know and encounter God through the power of prayer. It is about introducing people to prayer; local people praying for their neighbourhood – one life, one street, one community at a time. Therefore, we are inviting local people to make prayer requests. We believe prayer changes things, on a personal, local and national level, but we also believe prayer is about saying thank you and appreciating the fantastic aspects of our community. No prayer request is too big or too small. So, have you ever thought about praying or hoped that somebody would pray for you? If your answer to this is, "yes", then call into the church which is usually open from 9.00am to 5.00pm and fill in a prayer request card from the back of the church (near the prayer tree), leaving it in the clearly marked box, or email your request to prayer@stjnh.org.uk. Prayer requests can remain anonymous if you prefer but in any case will be treated with discretion and sensitivity. Over the weekend there will be various events taking place to which all are welcome. If you would like to know more about prayer and what is happening over the weekend, then drop into the church between 7.00pm and 8.30pm on the Friday to find out more. There will be people available to answer any questions, some literature to look at or take away and light refreshments will be served. On the Saturday there will be a special session for children when they can come along with their parents or guardians to leave their prayer requests and join in activities from 10.00am for an hour or so 24

in the Community Building. From 12 noon onwards there will be focused sessions taking place for adults in the church as itemised on the programme below. During this time various creative prayer stations will be set up in the church to focus our prayers. Sunday will see more focused sessions from 12 noon, following our usual Parish Eucharist service at 10.00am which will include special prayers for the community, as will the 8.00am Communion Service. The weekend will close with a simple service of worship, meditation and prayer at 6.00pm. Do come along to join us to …. pray individually ….. pray in small groups ….. pray in a large group …. pray out loud ….. pray silently ….. whatever suits you. NEW FACE AT LOCAL DEBT COUNSELLING CENTRE The charity, Christians Against Poverty, has announced there will be a new face at Mole Valley debt counselling centre. Fran Pyatt is to lead the team, supported by a number of local churches, to help people escape overwhelming personal debts. Mole Valley’s branch is one of 306 all across the UK, giving face-toface help to some of Britain’s most desperate and isolated people, a third of whom describe themselves as suicidal. The majority of people are trapped into debt by job loss, pay cuts, illness or relationship breakdown – times which are difficult enough, without financial hardship. Fran will visit people in their homes bringing them hope and reassurance face-to-face with the award-winning nonjudgemental service. WORLD VISION AND ST JOHN’S OUTREACH IN SPONSORSHIP St John’s became sponsors of Lonica Mapembo, through World Vision, in May 2012; at the time she was 11 years old. She lived in the Keembe community in Zambia. We received news on Saturday 8th August that she had moved away to live with relatives. Even though Lonica and her family are no longer taking part in the Sponsorship Programme in Keembe we are assured that we have helped to build solid foundations for her future and the Development Project are grateful for the support that we have given her over the last four years. We have agreed to sponsor a 9-year-old girl, Rose Banda, who is full of hope and dreams for her future. Rose lives in Keembe, Zambia together with her parents, one brother and one sister. She has the opportunity to attend a local school and our sponsorship will help her continue to receive an education. Like children everywhere, Rose loves to play when she has the chance and her favourite pastime is playing ball games. Rose also has to help out at home where her special job is carrying firewood. We thank you for your continued support by visiting our monthly stall, which provides the funds to World Vision to continue with their Area Development Project. A photograph of Rose has been placed on the notice board at the back of Church.

The lunchtime recitals at St Martin’s Church resume this month. These take place on the first Saturday of the month, at 12 noon, and last for about 40 minutes. The concerts are free with a retiring collection in aid of the William Cole Church Music Trust, which supports young musicians at St Martin’s. This month’s concert will be given by violinist, Litsa Tunnah. At Leith Hill Place, the childhood home of Ralph Vaughan Williams, there is a special event celebrating the composer George Butterworth. Born in 1885, he was a friend of Vaughan Williams but he was sadly killed in the Battle of the Somme just a hundred years ago. Composer, Kriss Russman, and biographer, Anthony Murphy, will give an insight into his life and music. There are two opera screenings at the Dorking Halls. Puccini’s Turandot (featuring the famous aria ‘Nessun dorma’) comes in a recording from Sydney Harbour and there is a live relay of Bellini’s Norma from the Royal Opera House in London. Watermill Jazz meets every Tuesday evening, each time presenting a different group of performers from the world of jazz. Full details of this month’s concerts will be on the website.

HOLMWOOD WI IT was with trepidation that members of Holmwood gathered at South Holmwood village hall on the first Wednesday in August. We were there to hear Dr Janet Pennington explain her talk entitled “Witches, Warlocks and Wellingtons”. We needn’t have worried - an hour of fascinating facts, ancient artefacts and infectious enthusiasm later, we were sorry her talk came to an end and not one phenomenon had occurred. We’ve had a busy few weeks, with outings to National Trust and English Heritage gardens, our own garden lunch meeting, a variety of speakers and social and craft afternoons. It’s lovely to see our new members settling in and if you would like to join us please contact our secretary Maureen Lewington on 01306 882057 or email maureen.lewington@btinternet.com We are a friendly, afternoon WI who meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 2.30pm. In September we will be enjoying a Ploughman’s lunch from 12.30pm with Beetle Drive to follow before tea and cake. Sounds delicious, I can’t wait.

North Holmwood Book Group Would you like to join our local friendly group? (We discuss all sorts of books chosen by the members.) If so, we meet at 6pm every 4-6 weeks on Tuesdays at The Royal Oak, Chart Lane South For more details contact Penny 885876/Gill 500157

COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT We look forward to welcoming all our friends to the opening on

11th September. The Bishop of Guildford will be celebrating and preaching at the 10.00am service. After the service Bishop Andrew will open the Community Building. All are welcome to come along. The opening will be followed by refreshments, with the Loud and Proud choir singing. The church and Community Building will be open all day for visitors and from 3.00pm to 5.00pm we will have the last “Teas on the Lawn of the summer.

We are looking for volunteers to help set up a scheme for running the building and then to man it each weekday in the morning, perhaps from 10.00am to midday. The person on duty could sort the post, answer the phone, check the building, keep records and perhaps even make coffee for anyone who wanted to drop in. We have some names already but we still need more. Could you help with this? After our recent financial appeal we have received some generous donations and grants for which we are most grateful. However we are still short of money to meet the full cost of the building and furnishings.

DORKING CHORAL SOCIETY DORKING CHORAL SOCIETY invite you to join them at the start of what promises to be an exciting new season. The new term starts on Wednesday 7th September. They rehearse at Powell Corderoy School, Longfield Rd, Dorking from 7.45pm to 9.45pm, and can often be found afterwards in a local pub. This is a non-auditioned choir; all you need to join is a love of singing and a commitment to practising for improvement. There will always be someone ready to help you if you need it. The choir’s new musical director, Richard Wilberforce, brings a wonderful sense of enjoyment to rehearsals. He comes with a wealth of experience as a conductor, having worked with the National Youth Choir, the Exon Singers, the Halle Youth Choir, and the BBC Symphony Chorus among others, and also as an operatic singer (countertenor). Richard is a natural teacher, patient and encouraging with just the right degree of challenge. He has high aspirations for Dorking Choral Society and the choir is confident that it will go from strength to strength under his expert guidance. COME AND SING The Society will be hosting a “Come and Sing” event as part of the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival in October and invites anyone with an interest in choral singing to come along, regardless of experience. It promises to be a treat not to be missed! The singers will be tackling MASS IN BLUE, the exhilarating Jazz Mass by Will Todd. Richard Wilberforce will lead the group through this exciting piece, supported by a jazz accompanist and a soprano soloist, culminating in an informal sing-though at the end of the day. VENUE: United Reformed Church, West Street, Dorking DAY: Saturday 8th October 2016 TIME: 10.00am - 5.30pm. Bring your own lunch; tea/coffee and biscuits/cake provided. Cost: £15 For further information see www.dorkingchoralsociety.org 33

Those who already own a laptop or an iPad/tablet are encouraged to bring that to learn on but computers will be provided as well – it’s up to you! We are also looking for volunteer help with our Dorking courses on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays between the hours of 10.15am to 2.15pm. If you have basic skills in tablet and computer use, have clear communication skills and a friendly and patient personality, then please contact us for more information on ways you can help. DORKING MUSEUM IN SEPTEMBER Our special exhibition space is currently featuring a unique collection of children’s artwork. “Take Part Art” is an art project for local children run by the Museum and supported by the Dorking Decorative Arts and Fine Arts Society (DDFAS). Over two months, local children, both in schools and at the Museum’s monthly Family Activities, created a unique work of art of embossed metal foil tiles based on patterns found in and about Dorking or in the Museum. Children participating in the Take Part Art project have been as young as three and up to ten years old. The children looked at and discussed photos from all around Dorking, discovering patterns and details in the buildings, building materials, street furniture and objects that are all around them. In addition, children visiting the museum could draw their inspiration from the wealth of objects on display. Museum project leader Lisa Geelhood described working with the children as “a real pleasure. The project team were able to see the benefits to their self-esteem when undertaking a new task which was unfamiliar to them. It was lovely to observe their ability to produce an end product of their own and subsequently their pride in their achievements.” If your children, or school, took part, do come along and see their work – but otherwise, please come along anyway and see this fascinating display of local creativity, on view in the Museum until 24th September. Our next special exhibition, opening on 29th September, is “Dorking 1916”. The third of our special exhibitions commemorating the centenary of the Great War with a focus on the Home Front highlights the impact of the Great War on the big houses and estates of the area and explores the changing role of women in wartime. 37

Our Family Activity on Saturday 17th September is “Farming in Dorking”. Families are invited to investigate old objects in the museum and old maps. Find out how farming has changed, and about our local Dorking hens. Colour a picture in. Drop in any time between 2.00pm and 3.30pm. Ideal for families with children up to age ten. Free with regular Museum entry. Heritage Open Days (8th to 11th September): The Museum will be open for Heritage Open Days. Entry is free on 8th to 10th September, 10.00am-4.00pm, no booking required. On Saturday 10th, rom midday to 4.00pm, there will be a special opportunity to see the Museum’s amazing fossil display, which is not normally on display to the public. The Ashcombe Collection, donated by Lord Ashcombe in the late 1940s, is a large collection of fossils and bones of extinct animals, all found locally. The Museum is also offering Cave Tours on 10th September (sold out) and historic town walks on 8th and 9th, a kids’ town trail on 10th and Deepdene Trail walks on 11th (details and booking through the Heritage Open Days website, www.heritageopendays.org.uk). We are particularly proud to be working with MVDC on the ‘Hope Springs Eternal: The Deepdene Trail’ project. The circular walk takes in the rise and fall of one of the Country’s most significant lost landscapes through 300 years of history. The Museum is at 62 West Street, Dorking RH4 1BS. HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk 72nd Summer Show Weekend It seemed very fitting to have Bertie’s Vintage Ice Cream Van greeting visitors to the 72nd Holmwood Village Produce Association Summer Show, where the tradition of producing and displaying the best of your vegetables, flowers, preserves and crafts is still going strong. The fully restored Ice Cream Van, with a top speed of 35 miles per hour and friendly, baby blue livery, conjures up a time when life was slower and simpler. It came as quite a shock to discover Bertie is actually a year younger than me, leading me to conclude my full restoration must be long overdue! The tug of war, china smash, Punch and Judy and beer tent maintained the traditional theme. BSA, our musical vicar, had assembled a fabulous scratch band of silver and brass players, one of whom wore official 1950s attire: namely a bone fide knotted white hankie on his head to keep off the sun. Once inside the canvas flaps of the Grand Marquee it was obvious that big was certainly best this year, where one of the most eyecatching exhibits was an 8 foot tall metal sculpture of a spinning globe. The exhibit required a van and trolley to manoeuvre it into position, where it duly won first prize in the craft section. In the home produce section the chocolate cake class attracted many entries, with contestants invited to use their own favourite recipe and decoration. The deserved winner produced a magnificent cake, described in true Mary Berry style by the judge as “Show Stopping” and featuring a levitating packet of Maltesers. Environmental conditions and planetary alignment also seemed to have had an enlarging effect on garden fruit this year, with some of the exhibits in the rhubarb class too large to fit on the exhibit bench. Prizes and cups were handed out by Mrs Jacob, the new head of the Weald School in Beare Green, and a successful auction of produce followed. 44

The evening Race Night was packed out, with so many people signing up to be jockeys that extra races were added to the evening’s race card. Once again, the Couple’s Canter was particularly popular, which this year featured a water jump, achieved by means of strategically placed water pistols aimed from the crowd. The Fun Dog Show took place on Sunday afternoon – and with as many dogs in Holmwood as there are residents the judge had a tough job picking winners in each class, finally awarding Enzo the golden retriever the prize for overall Best in Show. Photos of the whole weekend can be viewed at www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk, along with other information about the activities and upcoming events of the Association. Thanks to all those who supported the Summer Show Weekend – see you at number 73!

AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT July / August Sunday, 10th July was an incredible day for British Sport ---Andy Murray was in the form of his life when he beat Canadian, Milos Raonic, in three straight sets to claim the Wimbledon Final. The brilliance of Murray’s returns to Raonic’s thunderbolt 147 mph serves was perhaps his greatest strength. Lewis Hamilton raced to victory in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone sending the fans wild and reducing his team mate Rosberg’s lead in the Driver’s Championship to one point. There is usually plenty of drama in the Tour de France but seeing Chris Froome in his yellow jersey running during the final part of stage 12 to Mont Ventioux was something different. He was forced to climb the mountain on foot after his bike was badly damaged when he collided with a television motor bike. He eventually won the Tour de France for the third time and crossed the finishing line linking hands on shoulders with his Team Sky fellow cyclists who had helped him over the previous 2186 miles. Portugal beat France one goal to nil in the Euro 2016 final, despite losing their captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, to a knee injury midway through the first half. To my mind France were the better team but Portugal somehow won the game in extra time. A mediocre final to end a modest tournament. American golfer, Phil Mickelson, nearly made golf history at the Royal Troon Open by becoming the first man to shoot 62 in a major. His final putt on the 18th hole stayed right on the edge of the hole without dropping in. The Claret Jug was finally claimed by Sweden’s Henrik Stenson who fought a superb head to head battle with Phil Mickelson over the final 18 holes managing to win by three strokes as he finished on an Open record breaking 20 under par. Sunderland’s football manager, Sam Allardyce, has been selected to manage England’s football squad. He has the challenge of shaping a team that played so badly in the European Championship. 49

Sir Ben Ainsley and his team sailed his British America’s Cup boat to a one point victory at the World Series event in Portsmouth. He is striving to become the first British winner of the America’s Cup. He said “It’s brilliant to win again in front of our home crowd.” The greatest show on Earth!!! The 2016 Olympics certainly started with lots of thrills. In the men’s cycling road race on the first day the course was described as brutal and treacherous. Pre-race favourite Vincenzo Nibali and Britain’s Geraint Thomas, both in contention for a medal, both crashed on the final descent. In the women’s cycling road race Dutch rider, Annemiek Van Vleuten, who was out on her own in front lost control on the same descent and flew over the handlebars landing on her neck and back. Britain’s breaststroke swimmer, Adam Peaty, broke the world record in the 100m breaststroke heats - and claimed Team GB’s first gold medal in the final on the second day, breaking his own world record yet again. At the time of writing Team Britain has 7 gold medals, 8 silver and 6 bronze. Joe Clarke won the Kayak K1 in those choppy waters and Chris Mears and Jack Laugher were overwhelmed by their win in the synchronised three-metre spring board final. Cyclists Jason Kenny, Phillip Hinds and Callum Skinner won the team sprint, beating fancied New Zealand on the opening night of the velodrome. Rowers Heather Stanning and Helen Glover defended the title they won in London 2012 and the Men’s Four, Alex Gregory, Mohamed Sbihi, George Nash and Constantine Louloudis, also had a great victory. Cyclists Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Owain Doull and Sir Bradley Wiggins beat Australia to win the Team Pursuit breaking the world record. It is impossible to mention all the medal winners but it will be Katherine Grainger’s last appearance as she and Vicky Thornley won silver in the women’s rowing double sculls becoming GB’s most successful female Olympian. Somerset farmer, Ed Ling, who won a single trap shooting bronze medal could not celebrate in Brazil because he had to get home to Taunton for the harvest. [We look forward to hearing our Duffer’s report on the rest of the Olympics next time. I am sure he will have enjoyed it. Editor] 50

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust September 2016 News from the Common Did you make it to the VPA Show this year? It was another very enjoyable event and we were pleased to recruit a number of new members to the Friends. It was also very pleasing to see all the entries in the photography class that is sponsored by the Friends – “My Favourite View (on Holmwood Common)” – and congratulations to the winners: 1st – Andrew Webster; 2nd – Charlotte Evans; 3rd – Julie Beale. Ranger’s Report By now, many of you will have seen, and perhaps enjoyed, the new seats at the Viewpoint. These are in memory of Glynis, daughter of Fred Trow, who lives in Warwick Close, South Holmwood. Glynis married and moved away from Holmwood but died a couple of years ago. Some may remember Glynis and many people will obviously know Fred. Back in July my colleague, Sophie, was very excited to find baby dormice in one of the nest-boxes installed on Holmwood Common earlier this year. The NT Volunteers have now constructed additional boxes for installation later this year, taking the total up to about fifty boxes. This should then provide a sufficient number of boxes over a relatively wide area for formal monitoring purposes. Fingers crossed for more good news next year. Many thanks for all the calls about the travellers on the old cricket pitch at South Holmwood. Under National Trust byelaws we can move groups like this off our property without having to go through the courts. Having spoken with one of the travellers on the Monday we returned with the police on Tuesday with an eviction notice ready to serve ... but they had already gone. To prevent them occupying the land again, we have created a ditch and bank alongside the road opposite the car park and the area has been tidied and restored. Rob Adam, Ranger, Holmwood Common 53

LET DOWN BY HIS FRIENDS In the Bible there are many accounts of Jesus healing people. You can read about one in Mark’s Gospel, chapter 2, verses 3 - 12. I like this one because it is about friends. The four men made a tremendous effort to bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus. When they reached the house where Jesus was, it was surrounded by lots of people; they could have given up and gone home. But they didn’t. What did they do?

OVER & UNDER? The answers to all of these are either OVER or UNDER… 1 When a car passes another vehicle. 2 In London, they call it the Tube. 3 A thick winter garment you wear outside. 4 Dungarees, or worn to do a dirty job. 5 One way to throw a ball. 6 Another name for a funeral director. 7 When someone falls off a boat. 8 Knickers, vests etc. (Answers at the bottom of the page)

On a school trip to France, the teachers were reminding the children about behaving properly. ‘And,’ said the headmaster, ‘what do you do if one of the children falls overboard?’ ‘Shout for help, sir,’ said one boy. ‘Good. And what do you do if one of the teachers falls overboard?’ The all-important change came ‘Which one, sir?’ from faith - not from the faith of the man but from the faith of his Answers: friends. One man’s life changed 1 overtaking 2 Underground forever because of four good 3 overcoat 4 overalls friends and one Best Friend, 5 underarm 6 undertaker Jesus. 7 overboard 8 underclothes At that time houses had flat roofs and a stairway outside the house that led up to the roof. The four men broke through the roof and lowered their friend down on his bed. Imagine all the faces looking up and wondering what was going on as the dust, earth and lumps of wood fell down! Then the Bible says "When Jesus saw their faith…"
