Dear friends, St John’s had its regular PCC (Parochial Church Council) meeting in the middle of September. This probably wouldn’t normally be a cause for celebration but, this time, it was. Early in the meeting I was delighted to have the opportunity to sign the relevant contracts for our much-awaited Community Building Project to enter the next phase! You read that correctly – things are finally happening! In the middle of October work will begin on diverting the public footpath on National Trust land next to the church, in order to allow access. Towards the end of October demolition of the existing building will begin, with a completion date of mid-May 2016 being spoken about. I am sure you will agree that this is fantastic news and thanks are owed to so many people who have helped us get to this stage. In the meantime, the contents of the current hall will be sorted, moved, stored, or disposed of as appropriate. This will necessitate storing some (regularly used) things in the church building itself. At present, possibilities are being explored which will allow the best use of our space and facilities during this time. Inevitably there will be some disruption and we may have to do some things a little differently but, as the saying goes, “you can’t make an omelette without breaking an egg”. Some practicalities already sorted are that groups which currently use the hall will use the church building itself and there are extra electric points in the porch so that kettles, etc can be heated without blowing all the circuits! The thought of moving everything around, of being in a state of flux, of transition, might appear terrifying for us with this hall. But, in a strange way, it is a bit of a reminder of what other people in the world are going through at this time. The difference is that, whereas we’re just rearranging things for a short time while a new building is erected, other people are packing up what they can carry in order 5

to travel thousands of miles to other countries, in an attempt to simply stay alive. We cannot fail to be affected by the refugee crisis at this time. So many people, human beings like you or I, feeling that the only option is to pack up and leave everything behind, probably with little hope of ever being able to return to a place they can remember as home. Our difficulties with how to cope in church while work goes on are insignificant when compared to this! What can we do to help those people forced from their homes? Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart

Open the Book.... ....is a creative way of retelling bible stories to children in school. It is a nationally recognised scheme, approved and promoted by the Diocese of Guildford. We are trying to put together a team to deliver this at our local church school, St John’s, beginning after Christmas. So, if you can spare just half an hour on a weekday morning (how often depends on the size of the team) to come into school and help us to tell the children (and remind ourselves) about the wonderful rich stories of the Bible, please speak to either Jane Schofield or Stuart to find out more. Everything you need will be provided - the only requirements are a sense of humour and a desire to reach out to some of the young people in our community.

Joy in a Box Organised by The Romanian Aid Foundation UK Registered Charity No. 1060828 For many families in the Dorohoi area of north-eastern Romania, unemployment and poverty are their daily experiences all year round. This sense of deprivation is made worse at Christmas time by the extreme winter temperatures and the widespread pessimism about any improvement. In the autumn of each year we run our Joy in a Box Appeal, with the aim of bringing to these people some measure of hope and the encouragement of knowing that they have not been forgotten. For many people these gifts might be the only ones that they receive at Christmas. Each box means so much to those who have so little. Many of the gift boxes that we distribute have been prepared by supporters in the UK whilst others are made up in Dorohoi using funds that supporters designate for that purpose. For example, bulk donations of chocolates or sweets have allowed us to distribute these more widely, whilst specified donations enabled us to give sacks of groceries to several dozen families in particular need. By making up these sacks in Dorohoi we were also able to support the local economy. This year we will close the appeal later, to allow schools time to collect and dispatch the gift boxes after the autumn half-term break. Of course, ‘Joy in a Box’ is not limited to schools - many other groups and individuals prepare gift boxes each year. Churches, work colleagues, social clubs, youth clubs and pensioners can all join in. Boxes can be prepared for any age group, male or female, and will be distributed accordingly. Boxes are distributed in Romania by Asociatia Neemia, a registered charity that distributes aid on a year-round basis and is fully acquainted with local needs. Please contact Margaret Teale 01306 252004 for further details or see www.roaf.org . 8

Liturgy For

Dummies Do you come to church regularly and say the words in the service book by rote, without much thought for the meaning? Do you wonder about some of the language used and some of the rituals that happen weekly? Well, you are not alone! By request, John Philpott will be running a short workshop to explain what is the background and intention of some of the things we do, and why we say what we say where we say it......... This will be in St John’s Church on Saturday 31st October from 10.0011.30am, coffee and lunch provided. Please speak to Jane Schofield or Margaret Teale if you want to know more. 11

Dorking Choral Society presents Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Chichester Psalms’, Eric Whitacre’s ‘Five Hebrew Love Songs’ and Bob Chilcott’s ‘Songs and Cries of London Town’ on Saturday, 14th November 2015 at 7.30pm at Leatherhead Theatre. Hilary Campbell will again direct the choir and the accompanying musicians including harp, organ and strong percussion section. The programme presents a lively and varied feast of music making. Leonard Bernstein (who wrote ‘West Side Story’) set the psalms to dramatic rhythms, with strong melodic and harmonious tunes which underline the power of the ancient prayerful songs. Eric Whitacre is renowned for his exquisite sense of harmony. His Hebrew Love Songs are gentle, uplifting and, at times, exciting and fascinating with mysterious whisperings. Bob Chilcott’s Songs and Cries of London cover a wide range of catchy rhythms and harmonies in celebrating the sounds and atmosphere of London Town from street sellers to church bells.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 11th – 13th December 2015 I’m already receiving requests for trees for this year’s Christmas Tree Festival. There are still some trees available; the forms are in a plastic sleeve pinned up at the back of the church. Don’t leave it too late; the sooner you apply the longer you have to plan your tree! For more information please email Jackie on mole.end@virgin.net As you are probably aware, the KNITTED TREE for 2015 will be made up of black and white knitted squares. There are knitting instructions in another plastic sleeve at the back of the church but, just in case, I am including them here too. The more squares we can knit the better… Thank you all in advance! Christian Centre request for help Like many church organisations and buildings, the Christian Centre is often in need of minor repairs and maintenance. We have been very fortunate in the past to have a volunteer who was willing to carry out this task but, due to illness, he is unable to so at the moment. If you are, or know anyone who is, up to a bit of DIY or is a budding handyman, (or maybe your youth or uniformed group would be willing to sugar soap walls) please contact the Centre Manager: 01306 886830 or email centremanager @dorkingmethodist.co.uk .

BEGINNERS PLEASE This month’s meeting of our newly reformed play reading group will be on Monday 5th October at 7.30pm at 32 Claygate Road. We would love to have some new members … all are welcome for coffee, cake and a play reading. For more information call Jackie on 887416.

House Groups We have two at St John’s; one Thursday evening group and one Monday morning group and we meet every other week. The sessions last around 1½ hours and there are always refreshments available and time for a chat. But for at least an hour our experienced leaders take the discussion through all aspects of the topic, asking for your views, letting you work around your questions together, sometimes introducing DVDs, music, small group activities and sometimes bringing in a speaker to talk to us. There are usually work books to take home with you, handouts, reading lists for those who want to delve further… and yes, fun. As these are the church House Groups some passages of the Bible are read and we open and finish in prayer but apart from that you may be surprised to know that we are humorous, human and welcoming! Holmwood WI WHAT fun we had at our September meeting. Thirty-one members gathered at South Holmwood village hall for our annual Fish and Chip lunch, followed by a frantic Beetle Drive and tea and biscuits. Thank you Superdish in Dorking for the mouth-watering fish and chips and another big thank you to Vic Mansell, who explained the rules, printed the sheets and kept us all in line during a very happy and fun Beetle Drive. Winners were rewarded and even the losers enjoyed their biscuits as a consolation prize. As we continue to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the WI, Holmwood members are invited to a Lunch Celebration with food and drink and a look through our archives. The rest of 2015 is busy also, with pub lunches, social afternoons, our November Fair and Coffee Morning, Christmas lunch and activities, and finally skittles, which is always popular. You would be very welcome to join us. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month. Our secretary, Maureen Lewington, on 01306 882057 or maureen.lewington@btinternet.com, has all the details.

This celebration of the arts has, over the years, gone from strength to strength and it now offers a wonderfully impressive range of activities. As the list above shows, there is a huge number of musical events - far too many to describe each one individually. There are concerts of classical music, jazz and folk music, choirs and brass bands, opportunities to ‘come and sing’ or take part in an open rehearsal, operas, ballets and an organ recital. In addition, the festival includes numerous events celebrating the other arts - drama, literature, dance, painting, photography - in many venues throughout Mole Valley. We are lucky to have such a wide range of events in Dorking and the surrounding area, so please do support as many of them as you can. Full details are in the festival brochure, available free from the Dorking Halls, council offices, libraries and shops, and on the website.

COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT We expect work to start on 12th October 2015, with contract completion by May 2016.

BRICKS Let’s get our Community Building built You can help by buying ‘BRICKS’. They cost £5.00 each and your chosen name will be put on the ‘wall’ at the back of the church and then placed in the Commemorative Book which will be kept in the new hall. Buy one for yourself, your friends, family, neighbours or in memory of a loved one. They make great presents. Please fill in the form attached and pass it to Ann in the church or phone 01306 885787. 30

COMMUNITY BUILDING Exciting news – at the 15th September meeting of the PCC the contract for the new hall was signed by the Vicar and Pettitt & Jane the builders, in the presence of the two churchwardens, the architect and members of the PCC. I heard from Ben Jane the day after the PCC meeting: “Hi Graham, We too are excited about the build. It will be used frequently for many years to come, and we are very proud and privileged to be a part of it. Thanks Ben Jane Pettitt & Jane Building” Work starts on the 12th October with the creation of a temporary access road parallel to the western church railings (with the agreement of the National Trust and Surrey County Council). Once access is established this will be followed by demolition of the existing parish room and the start of building work. The new hall should be completed before the end of May 2016 (allowing for hold ups due to bad weather). So, now on to the decanting of the parish room and the temporary storage of some items in the church. It has been proposed to move some front pews to the back of the church to aid storage, but they will be restored to their original places at the end of the contract. Storage in church may cause a few difficulties during the building work but, so what; we have waited many years for this new building, what is a little inconvenience amongst friends?

Words and their changing meanings In the children’s classic ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ Humpty Dumpty says, ‘When I use a word it means what I want it to mean.’ Lewis Carol was pointing out what we all tend to do. Perhaps that is why over time some words change their meaning, or are used in new ways. A few decades ago, before home computers, no-one would have wanted a mouse on their desk, and ‘paste’ and ‘cut’ was what we did with glue and scissors. Sometimes the change in meaning can be extreme. Take, for example, the word ‘relict’. In the past this was a legal term for a widow or widower, meaning the one left behind. You often see it on old tombstones. But no-one today would dream of calling a widow a relic! There is a prayer at the end of Holy Communion, in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer that begins: ‘Prevent us O Lord in all our doings with thy most gracious favour…’ Are we really asking God to hinder everything we do? Of course not. The earlier meaning was much more positive. We are asking God to ‘go before us’ (pre-vent us), which is how the modern version of the prayer is worded. The prayer is about guidance rather than protection. A more subtle example is in the prayer of Intercession in the 1662 Prayer Book Holy Communion. The prayer asks that those in authority should ‘truly and indifferently administer justice…’ Today the word ‘indifferent’ means not caring one way or the other – a shocking basis for ‘justice’. But when the prayer was written ‘indifferent’ meant ‘without prejudice, unbiased’. That’s more like it. Finally, consider Joseph in the Old Testament. In Genesis Chapter 39, we note that despite all Joseph’s misfortunes he always came up smelling of roses. The New English Bible, following the King James Bible, translates it: ‘Joseph prospered for the Lord was with him’. But in the first English translation, by John Whitcliffe, in the 15th Century, it reads (modern spelling), ‘The Lord was with Joseph and he was a lucky fellow’. To be lucky today would mean to be successful, perhaps winning the Lottery. But in Whitcliffe’s day to be ‘lucky’ was to be blessed. Joseph’s luck was not that he made a fortune, though he did, but that ‘the Lord was with him.’ Aren’t we ‘lucky fellows’ too! Parish Pump 32

DORKING MUSEUM: A VIBRANT COMMUNITY RESOURCE Dorking Museum is much more than the building on West Street. It is a vibrant community resource focused on activities that reach all parts of the local community, enhancing appreciation and understanding of the heritage, culture, environment and beauty of the wonderful area in which we live. Our guided walks around Dorking reveal the forces, events and personalities that have shaped the town and its architecture and reveal the secrets that lie behind the streets of the modern town. Our schools programme has tailor-made ‘loan boxes’ on curriculum subjects, regularly used to bring a touch of realism to subjects such as World War Two and the Victorian age. Schools and other youth groups can take a private tour and have the whole Museum to themselves. The Museum also visits those who find it difficult to come to us. We take into care homes reminiscence boxes full of old local photographs and long-forgotten objects, and residents are able to add their own memories to ours. Our Great War research team has been finding out about the soldiers named on the area’s WW1 memorials. This continuing project has attracted a great response from the villages and the families of the fallen, allowing us to publish photographs, letters and even drawings of their brave relatives on our website. The Museum reopened Dorking’s South Street Caves to great success this summer. Many have already toured the caves, which date back to the 17th century, to see where traders of past centuries kept their supplies and speculate about other subterranean activities. 39

October at the Museum: Our current temporary exhibition, Dorking 1915, tells the story of the Home Front during the Great War, and our Family Activity is ‘The Big Draw’, featuring our timeline, dressing up and drawing (Saturday 17th October, come along any time between 2pm and 3.30pm). Receiving no funding from local or central government, the Museum is run, staffed and funded entirely by volunteers, and depends on the modest admission fees and sales. New volunteers, members, donors and donations of items of local interest are always welcome. Full details can be found on our website: www.dorkingmuseum.org.uk. Dorking Museum is at 62 West Street and open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am-4pm. Admission: adults £2, concessions £1, under-5s free, family ticket £4.50. Tel: 01306 876591. E-mail: admin@dorkingmuseum.org.uk. Online: www.dorkingmuseum.org.uk or on Facebook or Twitter.

AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT August / September In August Lord Coe was elected President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the sport’s governing body. The battle against drugs is one of the biggest challenges he will have facing him, especially after the recent weeks of doping allegations leading to a fall in public confidence in the sport. The Athletics World Championships commenced in the Bird’s Nest Stadium, Beijing on Friday, 21st August and ended on Sunday, 30th August. The final medals table showed GB and NI in 4th place with four golds, one silver and two bronze. Mo Farah in his present form proved he is unstoppable, when he won both the 10,000m and 5,000m. Jessica Ennis Hill collapsed to the ground after winning the 800m to claim the gold medal in the heptathlon. To reach such a high level in seven different events, just 13 months after she became a mother, was a remarkable achievement. Greg Rutherford is now the Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European champion after his victory in the Long Jump. Athletics breathed a sigh of relief when Usain Bolt won gold in the 100m in 9.79 seconds. By defeating the four runners who had previously been banned for drug offences, he had landed a significant blow for clean athletes against the dopers. Bolt then went on to win the 200m in 19.55 seconds, an even more impressive performance. Britain did even better at the World Rowing Championships at Lake Aiguebelette, France by winning five golds, nine silvers and one bronze to lead the World. My favourite race is the men’s eight which had a nail biting finish this year as Britain managed to beat Germany to first place by two tenths of a second. Great stuff!! Leeds Rhinos were just too quick for Hull KR when they scored fifty points to nil to win the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final at Wembley on Saturday 29th August. Before the match Lizzie Jones, whose husband Welsh stand-off Danny collapsed and died whilst 43

playing in May, had a standing ovation for her rendition of the hymn, Abide With Me. England beat Switzerland by two goals to nil in the latest European Championship football qualifier and during the match Wayne Rooney became the first Englishman to score 50 international goals. This achievement meant he had taken away Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 goals, which he had held for 45 years. Sir Bobby said, “I obviously cannot deny that I am disappointed that I now don’t hold this record. However I am absolutely delighted that it is Wayne, as captain of my beloved club and country who now holds the record”. Great Britain men’s wheelchair basketball team won the European Championship title with a stunning 87 to 66 points over Turkey on Sunday, 6th September. With this result the team have sealed their place at next year’s Rio Paralympics.

HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk We’ve crested the hillock of another summer, and we’re skidding and sliding on down towards winter, and the passing of another year. I’ve just started a new job. The last time I did that properly was 19 years ago. This is important because in order to make a good first impression at work one must be mindful of the number of hillocks crested and slopes descended in comparison with one’s new colleagues. “What did you do at the weekend?” enquired one of my coworkers politely. I decided that pulling a long mat of slimy hair out 44

of the shower waste probably wasn’t what she was after. I thought on. “I made a big batch of blackberry jam, and cleaned out my chickens” I replied, “…..just call me Barbara Good, ha ha!” The tumble weed skittered across the carpet-tiled office floor, and it dawned on me as I stared expectantly at her blank face that not only had she never seen the Good Life, she’d never even heard of it. She had been born 15 years after Tom and Margot motored down from Surbiton to West Street in Dorking and bought a spinning wheel for Tom’s home produced wool. A sit-com about stepping out of the rat race and attempting to be self-sufficient was as radical a TV show as could be imagined in the 1970s. Now fluffy self-sufficiency sit-coms have been trampled by actual life or death reality survival shows; my favourite being ‘The Island’ with Bear Grylls: “I can’t leave just because I’ve cut off my arm and my kidneys are failing – the guys need me to prize the limpets off the rocks for dinner!” Bridging the gap nicely between the homely 1970s and the cut-throat world of today sits, of course, The Great British Bake Off. Mary Berry is the new hard core Felicity Kendall; just as posh but with a look so withering it can summon actual meringue-based tears from the sturdiest of competitors. With a similar level of danger and seat-of-the-pants adrenaline comes the:

The Friends of Holmwood Common and The National Trust Newsletter - October 2015 Report by Rob Adam, Holmwood Common Ranger: By now most of the butterflies have disappeared from the Common though there’s still likely to be a few around such as Speckled Wood and Peacocks. Lucy Halahan, our butterfly recorder, reported that August was a particularly poor month for numbers due to the rain but she did report a sighting of a Marbled White which is quite common nationally but very scarce on Holmwood. The butterfly is dark brown with white blobs on its wings and it likes unimproved grassland of which there’s plenty around the Common. The new dog pond at Fourwents should be partially, if not completely, filled. We have created this pond in the hope that dogs will stop using Fourwents as there are minor issues of bank erosion and wildlife being chased. I know some people will find this irksome but hopefully this pond and the one further along at the two ponds on the trail, will satisfy any water-loving canines. Finally, in an article a couple of issues back, I reported on problems at the Scout Hut in South Holmwood. The Scout leaders have asked me to make clear that it wasn’t the scouts causing any trouble as the title of the article was slightly misleading so apologies for that. Bat Walk 20th August On a warm August summer evening a good number gathered for the Annual Bat Walk led by our friends from the Surrey Bat Group. We quickly made our first sighting of pipistrelle bats just above the trees as we left King’s Meadow. As we wandered up the trail in the gathering dusk, we heard and saw a fairly large group of the pipistrelles frantically feeding through and above the trees. There are two main types of pipistrelles but after much discussion the experts couldn’t distinguish which ones they were, the difference 46

being very small. However a tawny owl was unmistakeable, announcing his presence to us all while he hunted swooping above the trees. It was not until we turned for home that we clearly saw and picked up on our detectors a Serotine Bat, much larger than the small pipistrelles we saw earlier. It is only found in the south of England and some parts of Wales and was a very lucky find. A couple of Daubenton’s were seen picked out by a strong flash light at Fourwent’s Pond. One kindly gave us an excellent performance swooping over the water in the quest for its nightly feed. It was good to see the evening enjoyed by several younger visitors who benefited from good eyesight picking up the flying bats easily in the gloom. It was an excellent evening and we are most grateful once again to the Surrey Bat Group for their support. Dates for Your Diary Saturday 10 October: Fungus Walk Meet at 10.15am for 10.30am prompt departure. Meeting place will be advised when you book. Walk will be for approximately 2 hours and will cover a different area of the Common from the last two years, so for those who have done those it will be very interesting to see the different species that may occur in different habitats! Vivien, the leader, is a mycologist very much in demand and we are very lucky she lives so locally. Numbers are limited in order for everyone to be able to hear and see what Vivien says and shows us. Please book early to guarantee your place! Cost will be £5 per person for members and £10 for non-members. We are not able to offer a reduction for children as numbers are so limited. We regret this is not really a suitable outing for dogs as they tend to get in the way of other members! Bookings and payment in advance please (by cheque, BACS or cash) to Jane Thornton jthornton21@btinternet.com or telephone 01306 8894941.

Sunday 18 October: National Trust Walk This will be a walk around the Common led by our Chairman, David Lloyd, who will be giving visitors information about the Common and particularly its history. It will take place from 10am to 1pm and is suitable for everyone including children from 4 years old and upwards. Cost per person is ÂŁ6. Please book beforehand by phoning 01372 220644. Tuesday 24 November: Friends Autumn Evening You are warmly invited to join us at South Holmwood Village Hall; 7.30pm for a start at 8pm. We expect to have one or possibly two speakers talking to us about the history of the Holmwood and, topically, this may have an emphasis on the war years. We will be displaying some old photographs of the Holmwood and would be very interested if anyone remembers the views and buildings as they were. We would love you to bring any old pictures of your own which we could also display for all to view during the evening. The bar will be open and refreshments available. Calais migrant church leader happy to stay in camp Mima, the Ethiopian pastor of the church in the so-called 'Jungle' refugee camp in Calais has said he is no longer trying to get to the UK. Instead, he believes God wants him to stay and help distressed people in the camp. In a recent interview with Premier Radio Mima said: “Maybe Jesus has brought me [here]. For me it's better than to go to England.” And in a message to Christians in the UK, he said: “If you can, come and visit us and see. If you can't do that - pray. Pray for the immigrant people...the ones who are dying on the Mediterranean Sea, those who are dying on the train station when they try to go to England. All Christians need to pray for these people. Ask Jesus to give us protection and send the angels. We're eating once a day. We don't have any facilities. People are dying.” In the light of recent criticism of the migrants from various quarters of British life, the Church of England has called for more sympathy for those in the camp. The Bishop of Dover, the Rt Rev Trevor Willmott, told Premier Radio: “Some of those people in Calais at the moment have come from the most horrific situations, where they've been subject to violence; where they've had their homes destroyed. We have to say to ourselves what would happen to us if we were in that place? We’re very fortunate in England, we've got Parish Pump freedom.” CROSSWORD SOLUTION

PROPER POORLY In the Middle Ages certain saints were associated with particular ailments, and became known as patron saints for people suffering from those illnesses.

EDITH CAVELL Edith Cavell was a British nurse in charge of a hospital in Belgium during the First World War. She saved the lives of soldiers from both sides and helped Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during the First World War, for which she was arrested. Her strong Christian beliefs led her to help all those who needed it: she said, “I can’t stop while there are lives to be saved.” Despite international pleas for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. The night before her execution, she told the Revd. Gahan, the Anglican chaplain who gave her Holy Communion: "Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone." In the Anglican Church, 12th October is her commemoration day. This year Nurse Cavell is featured on a special £5 coin to mark the centenary of the war.

Can you guess who you might have asked to pray for you... If you had toothache? Dentista – Apollonia - Peter If you had a migraine? Aspren – Aspirin - Anthony If you had a sore throat? Blaise – Flannel - Godelina If you had sore knees? Neale – Gangulphus - Sebaldus Worst of all, if you got the plague… Agricola – Adrian - Quirinius

Answers: 1. Apollonia 2. Aspren (honestly!) 3. Both Blaise and Godelina 4. Gangulphus 5. All of them
