Dear friends, Last month we had quite an abrupt entrance into Lent – we celebrated Candlemass, we had a “normal” Sunday and without any further thought Ash Wednesday was upon us. I don’t know about you, but I feel quite used to things happening “without any further thought”. Life seems so busy that it feels necessary to quite literally rush from one thing to another - it might be to buy Easter Eggs as soon as the Christmas gift section disappears in shops or taking the Christmas tree and decorations down as soon as we reach Boxing Day. But, on the other hand, it might be quite important things in life that we rush into, that we take for granted, that we don’t really think about. During Lent the theory is that we should be able to slow down, that we should be able to take stock and consider what we are (and aren’t) doing. I’ve been told several times by the physio to get more exercise, to get into the habit of walking more, but there is always so much to do that there isn’t time to slow down and walk. It is often said that it takes about six weeks for a new routine to settle – six weeks to adopt new habits, to accept a change in life. Who has tried to adopt a New Year’s Resolution, only to find that it has gone horribly wrong within days? Six weeks is what it takes. And, conveniently, around six weeks is the time we have during Lent. The theory, then, is that if we take the whole of Lent seriously, in trying to change our life (or our habits) for the better, it has a good chance of sticking. If we spend the six weeks of Lent trying to live more like Jesus, it has a decent chance of sticking in the longer term. That is what we try to do during Lent. It is not a time of depriving ourselves while getting excited about making up for lost time with the chocolate (or whatever else you might have given up) when Easter comes along. Rather, it is a way of changing things permanently. So, maybe, there won’t be that desire (or addiction) 5

to eat tonnes of chocolate each day when Easter comes – because that need will have passed. So, during Lent, how are you going to change your life? During Lent, how are you going to change your relationship with God? During Lent, how are you going to try to live more like Jesus? Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart

Common Purpose Leatherhead and Dorking Deaneries - 8th March Following the Common Purpose Survey and the clergy meeting on Common Purpose, six evenings will be led by Bishop Andrew before and during Lent to focus on the health and growth of God’s Church in the Diocese of Guildford. The event for Leatherhead and Dorking Deaneries takes place at St George's Church, Ashtead on Tuesday 8th March. It will include both prayer and feedback from the survey, which was filled in by around 1500 people – the biggest such survey that any diocese has attempted. Each event will take place from 7.45pm to 9.15pm, and lay people and clergy are encouraged to attend. The format of the evening is as follows: 7.45: Refreshments. 8.00: Welcome and some input from Bishop Andrew. 8.10: The Survey Results: a Presentation and Questions. 8.40: A Time of Listening Prayer as we reflect on the survey. 8.55: Where Next? Charting the way ahead. 9.00: A Service of Night Prayer. 9.15: Close. 6

News from The Priory School As I write, it is February Half Term and a group of staff and students from The Priory are in Austria skiing. On Friday 19th February a group of 6th formers accompanied by Mr Harrington and Miss Buckland will be flying to Iceland for a Geography trip. Opportunities for students to see different parts of the world are plentiful in many schools and Priory is no exception in this respect. The groups have been in our prayers before and during the trips. You may have seen the article in the Dorking Advertiser that The Priory School was graded outstanding in its recent SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) report. This is due to the hard work of all involved in the school. When I first visited the school in December 2007, before my appointment as part-time School Chaplain in January 2008, I was struck by the caring and friendly atmosphere which reflected the school’s Christian ethos. This, along with many other strengths of The Priory, was reflected in the report. Just before half term Mrs Abbott (Head of RE and Chaplaincy) was approached by Hillsong Church (Guildford), as LZ7, a Christian Rap and Dance group from Manchester who have a global following (visit their website www.lz7.co.uk to find out more), were in the area and had had a booking at another school cancelled. So on Friday 4th February they came to The Priory and performed an amazing lunchtime set in the school hall. Many of the school’s 900 students witnessed a superb performance and joined in with the dancing. Many members of staff were there as well to support the event. The band also visited lessons, took selfies with students and then performed an evening gig in Guildford that a number of our students went to. We are hoping that LZ7 will come back to visit us at the annual ‘OMG’ week which will take place in week beginning 4th July. More details about ‘OMG’ week will follow in my next article. In the half term leading up to Easter there will be another ‘Prayer Spaces’ week, where the two RE classrooms will be transformed into interactive prayer spaces. This will take place in week 14

beginning 21st March. Students who are being taught RE or PSE that week will visit the rooms during lesson times. This is an annual event and is always very popular. On the Wednesday of that week we are holding an optional Communion service for the pupils. The last time we held one around 60 pupils came. We now have a worship band at the service and plan to include some of the students in this as has been the case recently. Just before half term, on the Wednesday and Thursday evenings, the annual Gym and Dance display took place. Due to other commitments I was unable to attend but I watched part of the rehearsal which was most enjoyable. Congratulations must go to all the students and staff who were involved in the display. Please remember in your prayers the year 11 and 6th Form students (and the staff who are teaching them) as they prepare for the forthcoming public examinations, the results of which will impact their future life choices. I wish you all a very Happy Easter. Stuart Ryland School Chaplain srd@priorycofe.com

Praying on-site with insight February Update Now Jabez was more honourable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested. (1 Chronicles 4:9-10 NKJV) Area walked: St Martin’s Walk, High Street, Cotmandene, South Street, East Street Our prayers: Jabez is credited with being more honourable than his brothers. Why that is I am not sure, but we do know that through his prayer he wanted to rise above the name (Jabez meaning pain) that his mother gave him. God granted him his request, so I guess maybe his faithfulness to God and not man/woman honoured both him and God. Dorking, which has sometimes been associated with darkness, in fact means ‘people or settlement on the dorce’ (ie bright river), so we set out to battle against the wind in the spirit of asking for God’s blessing on Dorking and to enlarge spiritual (and maybe physical) territory in Jesus’ name. We started by praising God for the generosity of people responding to the Syrian crisis. We prayed for Syrians and terrorists and that God would bring peace to this biblical land (perhaps a Damascus Road experience for those who are persecuting and terrorising). We then used the names and purposes of the shops to direct our prayers, praying blessings on Beatitudes and the families and children of Dorking, for people to see that beauty is not just skin deep, for spiritual nourishment for the people of Dorking, for rest 21

and refreshment, and for boldness in spreading the gospel in Dorking. Our thoughts were directed to whether God is in the chaos of life and, thinking about Genesis and the Spirit hovering over the chaos, we sensed that sometimes chaos and unsettling is necessary as God works in this to bring new things and new life. On the higher ground of Cotmandene, we praised and worshipped God for his hand in creation and for Christ’s name to be lifted high in the valleys and hills. We thanked him for stirring people up and showing them his way/purpose. In the town again we prayed for the CAHMS Centre and families in difficulty and we specifically prayed for two people we met in passing and offered blessings. We gave thanks for the unity of Christians in Dorking and prayed for continued and greater harmony. Next walk: Sat 9th April 2016 (TBC) 10am at Dorking Christian Centre For more information contact: Juliet Fuller – 01306 886830 – email: faith.hope.love@live.co.uk

Flowers in Church If you would like to help to arrange flowers at St John’s, so that we can have a display (large or small) more often, please contact Hazel 01306 886538. Christianity for me is having Jesus in my heart, And when I look back it’s like we have never been apart, But there was a time when he was unknown to me, A time in my life when I thought I was free, But l was a prisoner, a prisoner to sin Until the day I asked him in And only then did I start to live. Yes I still had problems, things didn't change overnight But with Jesus the darkness turned into light. No, I am not perfect, I still have my way And he corrects me and still day by day, He is making me more like him. 22

EASTER AT ST JOHN’S UNPACKED A quick glance at the Calendar will give you a good indication of “What’s On” during Holy Week and Easter – but might lead you to ask what that particular service is all about… So here is a summary of what is planned, for you to make an informed decision about which services to attend. Try coming to a service you haven’t attended before! However you spend Holy Week and Easter, make time to practise the presence of God – whether through a church service or not. You’ll find that Easter Day takes on a deeper significance as a result.

PALM SUNDAY 20th March 9.45am Procession to Church for 10am Palm Sunday Celebration Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday – the day when we remember Jesus and his followers entering Jerusalem, to the excitement of the crowds. This year we start the service at the school and walk to the Church. It is quite an experience to walk through the village as a church (adults and children alike), and remind ourselves of how much more emotional Jesus must have felt.

TUESDAY 22nd March - 8pm Service of Hope A Time to Remember and Reflect on Those We Love During Holy Week a short service is held to remember and reflect on the people in our lives who need our prayer and for those we continue to mourn and remember. We invite you, your friends and family to join us in quiet reflection, hymns and prayers, lighting a candle and considering the needs of those seeking prayer due to illness or perhaps going through difficult times, or nearing the end of their life. It can also be a time to celebrate lives that meant so much to us. The service is less than an hour long.

WEDNESDAY 23rd March - 8pm Quiet Eucharist MAUNDY THURSDAY 24th March 8pm Eucharist of the Last Supper If you want worship which combines spiritual presence, power and pathos all in one service, then come to this. From its direct reminder of the Last Supper, through to the recalling of Jesus in the loneliness of Gethsemane – this is a deeply moving service. Nothing prepares you for Good Friday quite so well as seeing the church stripped bare in front of your eyes….

GOOD FRIDAY 25th March 10.50am Churches Together in Dorking Procession This is an essential and powerful part of Good Friday for many across our churches. The procession begins at Dorking Halls Car Park (meet at 10.50am for 11am start) and ends outside St Martin’s (service 11.30am or earlier). The sight of all churches walking together speaks for itself.

2pm Stations of the Cross Most services at St John’s follow a set liturgy – this one is the exception. It isn’t ‘clergy led’ or indeed ‘clergy planned’ – which makes it very special. Instead, you will experience a service which will touch you at many levels, from what you are seeing and hearing to the thoughts prompted in consequence.

HOLY SATURDAY 26th March 10.00am – Decorating the Church Technically this is not a service, but those people who decorate the church for Easter are showing their own reverence to God. You don’t need to be an expert in flower arranging, just someone willing to come along and take part.

1pm – 4pm National Trust Easter Egg Hunt and Teas at the Church Again not a service, but just good fun. Starting from the Church this hunt goes over the common. Details are in the National Trust article. Teas will be available in the Church.

EASTER DAY - SUNDAY 27th March 6.00am Dawn Service, followed by breakfast For some this service is the Easter highlight! There is nothing quite like the feeling of starting worship outside the church, in the last few minutes of darkness and then seeing the light of dawn fill the church. It’s extraordinary and if you’re wondering why we do it, it is because John’s Gospel reminds us that Mary Magdalene visited the tomb of Jesus in darkness (and, of course, found it empty) but then encountered him in the garden after the dawn. So this service welcomes Easter Day by taking us from darkness to light, finishing with breakfast (your first hot cross bun of the day!).

8am Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer) If you enjoy the traditional Prayer Book service, or if you are planning to head off to spend the day elsewhere, this 8am service is for you.

10am Easter Celebration Eucharist Our main celebration of the day! All ages welcome! Come and join us, to celebrate the Resurrection with joy! Whatever your choice of service(s), we look forward to seeing you over Holy Week and Easter.

HOLMWOOD WI Two guests, nearly a full house of members and our speaker, Louise Harris, all met on a cold, windy afternoon at the beginning of February. Louise talked members of Holmwood WI through the intricacies of Wills and Powers of Attorneys, before taking part in a lengthy question and answer session. It was an enlightening and informative talk with everyone agreeing Louise had either put our minds at rest or encouraged us to check out our own plans for the future. One of our major fundraisers, our Spring Fair and Coffee Morning, takes place on Saturday, 19th March, at the village hall in Warwick Road, South Holmwood. We hope lots of friends, family and neighbours will join us between 10am and 12 noon for two hours of browsing craft, cake, book, bric a brac and plant stalls, as well as trying their luck on the tombola and bumper raffle. As always refreshments will be served by friendly WI members. Please join us. January’s pub lunch at the Dolphin, Betchworth, was a great success with plenty of chat, fun and good food. This monthly outing gets more and more popular - just one of the fun activities Holmwood WI offers potential members. Others include monthly meetings, social afternoons, garden parties, fish and chip lunches, a lending library, monthly raffle and outings. Maureen Lewington, our secretary, is waiting to hear from you. Call her on 01306 882057 or email maureen.lewington@btinternet.com

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL The Christmas Tree Festival 2015 at St John’s was a great success. We made over £600 for Church Funds. Many people contributed in so many ways including tree decorating, knitting, baking and visiting. Thank you all for your support. ‘Knit One, Purl One, Save One’ sewed together eight blankets from the knitted squares you made for the Big Tree. Most of them have been sent to Romania and two white ones have gone to local Homes. Thanks to all the members of the Knitting Group. Margaret has pinned a picture of the blankets at the back of the church. Hazel, Margaret and I recently had a meeting to discuss the Christmas Tree Festival 2016. I know, it’s only March but we thought that you’d like to know that we will be having another. For your diary, the dates will be 9th – 11th December. Friday 9th will be tree decorating day. We will be having another Cheese and Wine party with a short Entertainment on that evening. We considered other options but have decided to have another Knitted Tree because so many people love it. 2016’s tree will be made up of knitted squares in pinks and purples with white highlights so if you have some leftover white wool you can use it again this year. You can choose any shade of pink or purple you like. Once again I include the knitting instructions for you! Happy knitting. Double knitting Aran wool Chunky wool

The Leith Hill Musical Festival begins with the annual performance of a Bach Passion - this year the turn of the St John Passion - and the youth choirs day. This will be Brian Kay’s final Passion as festival conductor, after 21 years, so a rather special occasion. The youth choirs day always sees a huge amount of young talent on display and is well worth a visit. A further celebration of youth takes place at the Youth Showcase Awards, which will include performances by local artists as well as a jazz band medley. This is a free event at the Dorking Halls (though you do need to obtain a ticket). The Heath string quartet, presented by the Dorking Concertgoers, gives two more recitals. They continue their voyage through the complete Tchaikovsky quartets, playing No. 2 and No. 3 - both contain much gorgeous music. The concerts also include Ravel’s delicious quartet, Bartok’s adventurous fifth, and quartets by Haydn and Mozart. 34

Brockham Choral Society presents a concert featuring composers connected with Surrey - who were either born in or worked in the county. There will be music by Vaughan Williams, Purcell, Sullivan, and many others. Dorking Philharmonia’s concert will include two symphonies – Schubert’s sixth and Haydn’s seventh (Le midi) – and two serenades – Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and the Wind Serenade by Richard Strauss. The Russian State Opera appears at the Dorking Halls, performing Madame Butterfly, one of Puccini’s finest and best-loved operas. The emotion and drama of Puccini’s music will be enhanced by the presence of a large orchestra. Also at the Halls is an opera screening: Mussorgsky’s great dramatic masterpiece based on a dark chapter in Russian history, Boris Godunov, live from the Royal Opera House (21st). Watermill Jazz meets every Thursday evening at the Aviva social club with a different group of performers on each occasion. This month’s lunchtime concert at St Martin’s Church will be given by cellist Claire Deniz, with Alan Brown at the piano. Finally, at Dorking Halls, you can hear Liza Pulman singing some of the favourite songs from Hollywood movies, with accompaniment from the Joseph Atkins Orchestra. I think there should be sufficient variety in this month’s concerts to satisfy all tastes!

AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT Our readers will be sad to learn that our Armchair Duffer has been unwell and has not been able to write his normal article. We look forward to his next contribution and hope that he is sitting comfortably in his armchair, enjoying his sport.

DORKING DRAMATIC & OPERATIC SOCIETY Wednesday, 6th to Saturday, 9th April at 7.45 pm

At The Green Room Theatre, Dorking Directed by Val Collins A Different Way Home by Jimmie Chinn started life as a radio play. Such was the reaction that it was extended into a double bill and premiered at the Oldham Repertory Theatre where it received the best actor and best new play in the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards. This deeply moving and astutely observed play is being played by two award winning actors, Sarah-Jane Vincent and Steven Mann. Their powerful voices remind us of the need for families to communicate and for love to transcend prejudice. Tickets (£10 for members, £11 non members) available from the Dorking Halls Box Office, Tel: 01306 881717 www.dorkinghalls.co.uk.

Beginners Please The next meeting of the St John’s play reading group, Beginners Please, will be held on Monday 7th March at Jackie's house, at 7.30pm. We will continue with our reading of ‘Calendar Girls’ and we will be making a donation to the charity that the original Calendar Girls set up. The April meeting, our last before the summer, will be held on Monday 4th April; same time, same place. The play will be announced in the April edition of The Spire. Details from jaxrance@gmail.com

DORKING MUSEUM A WELCOME AT DORKING MUSEUM The diversity of visitors and interests that the Museum attracts underlines the great heritage of the wonderful area in which we live. This has been clearly shown by some of the visitors welcomed to the Museum over the past few months. A palaeontologist from Oxford University came to study a historic fossil in the Museum’s Ashcombe collection, and made an exciting discovery that even made the pages of The Sun. A fossilised pliosaur skull, found in Dorking chalk pits in the 1850s, was identified as a giant marine reptile of a type mainly associated with North American waters. Dating from around 95 million years ago, it is one of the last of the species. A local man presented the Museum with a fine copy of a painting that his grandfather had commissioned from a well-known painter in 1905 and that was exhibited in Paris. It depicts a procession of the family’s ancestors, from which he discovered that he was descended from Priscilla Mullins, the daughter of Dorking’s pilgrim father, William Mullins. The Museum’s archives played host to members of the Dorking Welcomes Refugees community group, researching the Dorking and District Refugee Committee that helped house European refugees during the Second World War, following in a great tradition from WW1 and back to the Huguenots. More unusual was the ‘mousetrap professor’ and colleagues from Norway, producing a ‘road trip’ book on the subject of mousetraps. The three came over especially to see the Museum’s small exhibition of mousetraps and meet Dorking’s own internationally acclaimed expert on the subject.

41

The Museum also hosted a meeting launching the oral history project for the Deepdene restoration programme. The Museum is pleased to support MVDC on this programme: (www.facebook.com/thedeepdenetrail) and will be promoting The Deepdene Trail, developing a guided tour and upgrading its exhibition. Of course, we always welcome all visitors, families for the Family Activities and group bookings for Museum tours or guided walks. March Diary Exhibitions: There is a last chance to see the popular ‘Dorking 1915’ exhibition, showing life in the area during the Great War, as this will close on 26th March. Our new exhibition, ‘The High Street: Market or Football Pitch?’, opens on 31st March and features paintings and archive photos of Dorking High Street across the ages, including the cattle market (with a noted Charles Collins painting) and the annual Shrove Tuesday street football games (displaying for the first time an original football standard from this event). Family Activities: Saturday 19th March sees our ever-popular Easter Egg Hunt. Follow the clues around the museum, discover things you may not have seen before and claim your prize at the end. Drop in at any time between 2pm and 3.30pm. Ideal for families with children up to age ten. Free with regular Museum entry. Dorking Museum has vacancies for a few additional volunteers. These vacancies cover a wide range of opportunities to help in our excellent museum, as well as to assist in our outreach activities. Please see our website or contact admin@dorkingmuseum.org.uk or telephone Peter Camp on 01306 888123. HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk Spring Evening and AGM Wednesday 16th March 2016 at 7.30pm South Holmwood Village Hall

WILD FOOD! I know foraging food from the wild is all very wholesome and everything, but in researching Peter Sibley from Forest Foragers, our speaker at the Spring Evening, the thing that titillates me the most is the delicious potential for a proper Agatha Christie style death. According to Peter, the Destroying Angel mushroom is “one of nature’s deadliest weapons”, leaving the victim in absolute agony and with no hope of survival. It’s a bit more extreme than just getting a mouth full of woodlice, which is the worst that’s happened whenever I’ve cooked mushrooms I’ve foraged, but with a bit more instruction I’m sure I could identify something that would set Hercule Poirot’s moustache a-twitchin. I’ll be sending out the dinner invitations shortly. The Spring Evening is free to VPA members, with a £2 charge for non-members. But in a scheme stolen from us by the stately homes of the National Trust, if you sign up for membership on the night you get your entrance fee back. See Kate on your way in and she’ll sort you out. For those already happily ensconced in the bosom of the VPA, it’s the ideal opportunity to pay your 2016 subscription (still the same as in previous years: £6 for an individual, £10 for a family) as well as any Summer Show sponsorship (£6 per class). Summer Show Weekend - Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July 2016 Start planting your veg, crocheting a tea cosy and framing some good shots in preparation. The Friends of Holmwood Common and The National Trust March 2016 News from the Common Ranger’s Report This month we should see birds like Chiffchaffs returning from their winter home in the Mediterranean and West Africa and Willow Warblers from sub-Saharan Africa. Their return normally coincides with the emergence of their insect diet – flies, moth larvae, spiders and similar, although Willow Warblers will also eat fruit and berries in the autumn. Swallows return normally in late March but a few were reported at the end of February (not locally), presumably a response to the very mild winter that we’ve just experienced. The risk they run is the insects they feed on may be in short supply particularly if there are late frosts. Willow Warbler numbers have declined over the past few years in the UK leading to them being included on the Amber List of conservation status. There are three lists, Red, Amber and Green which have 246 birds in total. Other examples include Song Thrush, House Sparrow and Starling on the Red list; and Barn Owl, Bullfinch and Swallow on the Amber list. A very informative article can be found here... www.bto.org/sites/default/files/u12/bocc3.pdf As the average daytime temperature increases, we should also see a number of butterflies around looking for nectar on plants such as catkins and dandelions. So keep an eye out on sunny days for Peacocks, Brimstones, Small Tortoiseshells and Commas. Rob Adam, Ranger, Holmwood Common.

Dormouse wakes up just in time for the Friends' AGM? Back in April 2015 the NT Volunteers were thrilled to discover a hibernating dormouse here on Holmwood Common whilst clearing one of the footpaths. To help us learn more about these delightful creatures we have persuaded Dave Williams of the Surrey Dormouse Group to come and share stories about the life and habitat of the Hazel Dormouse as part of the Friends' AGM on Tuesday, 8th March. Join us in South Holmwood Village Hall at 7:30pm … and we promise that you won't sleep through the AGM either! Can you help with maintenance? There will always be paths (plus ponds, scrub areas, ditches, bridges and car-parks) that need attention but, currently, the NT Volunteers are too few in number to be confident of completing all of the work that is required. That's where you can help. First: by reporting problems in order that we know exactly where and what action might be required. Simply send an email to FOHC.report@gmail.com with details including the location. This worked well during the Christmas period and blocked paths were, in general, cleared very quickly as we were able to work with National Trust to prioritise the problems. Second: consider a little bit of DIY maintenance of your favourite path. A surprising number of regular users of the Common carry a pair of secateurs and trim as they walk! Third: – and most helpful – let us know if you might, from time-totime, be willing to come out and work for a few hours to assist with the maintenance work. Our next Friends' Working Day is on Saturday, 2nd April … please contact us if you can spare an hour or two. Contact us … and visit us on Facebook If you have any questions about the National Trust’s work on Holmwood Common then please get in touch with Rob Adam, NT Ranger for Holmwood Common: phone 01306 712711; mobile 07901 511359; or email to rob.adam@nationaltrust.org.uk 54

HOT CROSS BUNS One of the pleasures of Easter is eating hot cross buns. Like most things they cost more now than they did in this old rhyme…

HOLY WEEK Holy Week is the week before Easter Day; it starts with Palm Sunday which is on 20th March this year. Palm Sunday is when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.

Hot Cross Buns, Hot Cross Buns, One a penny, two a penny, Hot Cross Buns. If you have no daughters, Give them to your sons, One a penny, two a penny, Hot Cross Buns.

The Thursday of Holy Week is called Maundy Thursday which is named for the words that Jesus used at his last meal with the disciples, that we now call the Last Supper. The Latin words are ‘Mandatum novum do vobis’ – a new commandment I give you’. Do you know what that commandment is? You can read the whole account in St John’s Gospel, chapter 13.

If you have some time to spare, see how many words you can make from the letters in the words HOT CROSS BUNS. Words of at least 3 letters, no plurals, proper names or foreign words.

Then comes Good Friday - a lot of people can’t see why a day that commemorates the trial and crucifixion of Jesus could be called ‘good’. It was a black day but Christians know that without what happened that Friday there would be no Easter. Without the death of our Lord there would have been no empty tomb on Easter Day, no glorious Resurrection.

What do you get when you pour boiling water down a rabbit hole? A hot cross bunny. Why couldn't the rabbit fly home for Easter? He didn't have the hare fare.
