Dear friends, As I write this, the UK is preparing itself for a General Election – only two years since the last one, and one year since the EU Referendum. There is always the question of how should we vote. Should I vote for the party I have always voted for? But, then, what if I don’t like the leader of that party? What if I really like the leader of a party but don’t like the party itself? Should I vote for the party I think will have the most influence here, or nationally? Or should I vote a particular way in an attempt to prevent someone being elected? Or, even, I sometimes wonder whether there is any point in voting, since they’re all the same anyway? It is all so complicated, so hard to know what to do for the best. Maybe it was easier in the past but, to be honest, I’m not too sure. At the heart of the question of who to vote for is the question of what we believe. Each item of every manifesto questions our beliefs. Should health care be available to everyone? Does that include those who are here as refugees, or those who happen to be on holiday from overseas when they fall seriously ill? How about there being sufficient funding for education? Should higher earners pay more tax to help those who don’t earn so much? Or should the higher earners be protected because they contribute enough tax anyway? Should policies be in place to protect the environment for those who come after us? Or is that not our concern? What is it that you believe is important in how this country is run? When we see the effect that government policies have (or church policies, come to that), so often there is a feeling of frustration – since they are not what we would have necessarily wanted - but, those are the decisions made by those elected by those who voted.

5

In the church, this was felt quite strongly a few years ago regarding votes about women bishops, where those elected to the Church of England’s “Parliament”, the General Synod, weren’t necessarily of the same viewpoint as most churchgoers. A response to that was an increased interest in how the Church of England is governed – with more notice taken of who was elected and what they represented. The same is true of local and national government. What do the candidates represent? If we don’t consider this, it is easy for those with unrepresentative views to be elected simply since many people don’t vote. As we approach the General Election, I am not going to say how I think you should vote, but I do strongly urge you to vote - for whoever you feel matches what you believe to be important. Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart

ROGER COOMBES 1945 - 2017 Roger was born in Ewell, the only child of Fred and Molly Coombes. He was educated at The Glyn County Grammar School for Boys in Epsom and went on to study at St Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge, graduating in 1967. In 1973 Roger was admitted as a Member of The Institution of Civil Engineers and spent his time working in the clean water section – on dams, reservoirs and irrigation systems. His career took him abroad on many occasions, to a long and varied list of countries including Sudan, Yemen, Lebanon, Ethiopia and Jamaica. When asked, however, he always insisted that in the end Dorking was his favourite place. In 1978 Roger was admitted as an Associate of The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, becoming a member in 1999. As an engineer, and in life in general, Roger was most meticulous with everything that he did. During his early years at Sir William Halcrow and Partners, he had been working on a section of the Victoria Line underground construction site setting out the drilling line for the tunnelling machines to follow. He was rightly very proud that using much less sophisticated surveying instruments than those used today, his calculation had an error of less than one inch in line and level when the two tunnels met. Roger’s hobbies included horse riding, boating, photography and bird watching. He was a member of the Dorking & District RSPB Group and served on the committee for many years as the Field Trips Organiser. Sometime later, Jane joined Roger when she served as the Honorary Secretary. Roger carried out recces to various reserves and other good birdwatching locations. Jane was also willing to drive long distances and would drive from Dorking to RSPB reserves as far away as Suffolk or Dorset for a day’s birdwatching. Once Roger knew of this, he asked her to join him on a visit to Arne in Dorset, and the rest, as they say, is history. Roger and Jane were married in 1991 at St Paul’s Church, Dorking. After two years of 7

marriage, their only child, Emma, was born and Roger became a very proud father. Roger was passionate about canal boating, an interest very much shared by Jane. They owned boats and spent many happy holidays in France as a family, and then, when Emma left for university, they bought a boat which they kept locally on the River Wey. Since then they have enjoyed many trips, both locally and further afield around the rivers and canals of England. In retirement, Roger was very active in the local community. He was invited to join Probus, a club for retired professionals and businessmen, for whom he served as treasurer for a number of years. He and Jane regularly attended St John’s Church in North Holmwood, where Roger was a member of the Parochial Church Council. Using his talents as a photographer, Roger would take many splendid photographs throughout the year for the production of a church calendar. His last calendar for 2017 was a photographic record month by month of the construction of the new Community Building, next to the church. This calendar is a very fitting tribute and memory of a man who loved engineering, was meticulous in ensuring there were no mistakes and who freely gave his time for the benefit of others. As a husband and father, Roger has meant more to Jane and Emma than words can say. He was gentle, caring, calm and always supportive. He was always willing to look for the good in others. He was continuously helpful, keen to tackle every job with expertise and diligence. As Jane’s parents said, in Roger, they ‘knew a man who can’. Roger will be sorely missed by very many people.

SUMMER JAZZ The Ladybirds Choir directed by Helena Twentyman Saturday, 24th June at 3.00pm United Reformed Church Hall, West Street, Dorking, RH4 1BS Tickets £7.50 from 01737 843662 Supporting the Dorking Besom The Ladybirds Choir’s summer concert will have a jazz flavour this year, with a special focus on the songs of Ella Fitzgerald and George Gershwin. The First Lady of Song was born 100 years ago and, over a career spanning six decades, she recorded over 200 albums. Some of the favourites you will hear include Fly me to the moon, Chattanooga Choo Choo and A-tisket, a-tasket¸ a playful version of the nursery rhyme which Ella recorded in 1938 at the age of 21 – it was immediately a Number 1 hit and remained at the top of the Hit Parade for nineteen weeks. We will also be presenting highlights from Porgy and Bess and other songs by the legendary American songwriter George Gershwin, who died eighty years ago. This year we are delighted to be supporting the Dorking Besom, which started in 2007 and serves the town of Dorking and the surrounding villages of Mole Valley. The Besom helps people make a difference, providing a bridge between those who want to give time, money, things or skills and those who are in need through situations such as isolation, poverty, homelessness, ill health and domestic violence. Please join us at 3.00pm on Saturday 24th June at the United Reformed Church Hall in Dorking. Tea and cake will be served after the concert.

From Capt John Bruce Worsfold CA TSSF To the people of old, nature was seen as a sign of God’s love for the world, a sign of His presence, a sign of His concern and dependability, and it was through creation that God first spoke to His people. But this generation has gone some way to spoiling that sign of God’s love for His people. Because we are so selfish and greedy, people in poorer countries are dying through lack of food and clean water, caused through the pollution we cause which is making the ozone layer break up and change the weather systems throughout the world. God’s world is changing, there are floods caused through unusual rain falls, which are killing people, mainly children, and washing away their houses and businesses; while in other parts of the world there is no rain at all causing droughts and terrible starvation, again killing people, mainly children. People throughout the world are suffering through changes in nature caused by the pollution that our need for consumer goods has caused. I am sure that this is not what God had in mind when He created our beautiful world and people to look after it. We have recently celebrated Holy Week and Easter. God sent His Son to our world and it was through Jesus that God became a sign of the continual love He has for each one of us, a love far beyond our comprehension. Throughout the gospels we see Jesus expressing that love through His ministry of healing and teaching. Jesus was a sign of God’s great love for the sick, the poor, the starving and the thirsty, and for all those children who have absolutely nothing - no future, no hope, nothing to look forward to except death. We will never truly understand what those people and children in Syria or those people and children who are starving and dying of thirst are going through, but Jesus does. After Jesus had died on the cross and had risen from the dead, He again left a sign of His great love for the world - His Church - you and me, we are that sign. We become signs of God's presence in the world as we become more and more Christian; a sign, which grows as our relationship with Jesus, deepens. We become signs of God’s love by loving all those we work with and come into contact with each day. We become 15

special signs of God’s love when we show more empathy with our brothers and sisters and their children who are dying through hunger, thirst and lack of medical aid. The other day God put into my mind that parable of the rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen while Lazarus, covered in sores, sat at the rich man's gate just longing for a few crumbs from the rich man's table - but Lazarus got nothing. They both died. Lazarus went to Heaven and the rich man to Hell. The rich man saw Abraham and begged for Lazarus to come down and cool his tongue. The rich man was told you received the good things while on earth and Lazarus the bad, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. Let me do more, Lord, for my poorer brothers and sisters while I am in this world.

Holmwoods Mothers’ Union We meet on the first Monday of each month except when there is a Bank Holiday. This meant that we were not able to have a meeting in May. However, a few of our members were able to go to the mid- week communion service which is held each second Wednesday of the month in the Lady Chapel of St Martin’s in Dorking. This service is given a Mothers’ Union theme with MU prayers which is very much appreciated, especially by those who are not able to get to the meeting. Later in the month some of us will go to All Saints, Woodham for the meeting when any member in the diocese is invited to go to hear about the work going on both here in Guildford and across the world. This time there will be a talk by Anne-Marie Clive, the Regional Development Manager for Southern Africa, Pacific Oceania, Canada and the USA. She works in Mary Sumner House, the Mothers’ Union Headquarters in London. We shall hear about the wonderful work done by the MU workers in each diocese, encouraging mothers to bring up their children in a Christian way, keep them and the women themselves healthy, and teaching bible study and literacy to empower the women. Our next meeting will be on Monday 5th June at 12.00 noon in the Community Building at St John’s Church, North Holmwood. Any member of MU or anyone interested is very welcome to come. Our concern is Christian care for families.

HOLMWOOD WI Paintings and photographs of Mole Valley scenes filled the competition table as members of Holmwood WI met to welcome Jacqui Johnston-Lines to our May meeting. During Jacqui’s talk on the Growth and Development of Dorking we became engrossed in pictures of local landmarks, housing estates, mansions and shops which have made our market town a great place to live. She chronicled the growth of Dorking from the arrival of the railway to modern day mentioning the popularity of Box Hill throughout that time and the need for housing with the ever-increasing population. Members recognised locations and were keen to add their anecdotes to this informative talk. During the meeting, members discussed and voted on the two resolutions which will be reviewed at the June NFWI 2017 Annual Meeting in Liverpool. We are looking forward to the next two months when our speakers will be talking to us about BLESMA, the British Limbless ExServicemen Association, and the lives of Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. Our popular garden meeting takes place in August, always a favourite, and an outing is planned to Sissinghurst. It’s lovely to welcome new members. If you are free on the first Wednesday of each month, please join us from 2.30pm in the village hall, South Holmwood. Maureen Lewington on 01306 882057, maureen.lewington@btinernet.com has all the details.

A notable event this month is the final concert promoted by “Cornflower Presents”. Several Cornflower concerts, which specialise in period performance, have been generously arranged by Michèle Kohler over the years, with the entire proceeds always going to charity, but Michèle has decided this is to be her final concert. Many of the concerts have featured members of the distinguished Kuijken family of Belgian musicians. At this concert, Sigiswald Kuijken will perform solo music by Bach, playing a suite for cello and the second partita for violin. He will also be joined by violist Marleen Thiers to play duets by Thomas Morley and music by Gossec. There will be a glass of wine in the interval. Tickets for children and students are only £1! For tickets please contact cornflwr@cornflwr.demon.co.uk. 35

Dorking Choral Society finishes its season with a summer concert entitled ‘The Evening Primrose’. The choir will sing a selection of choral songs linked by the theme of flowers, including Britten’s Five Flower Songs and Finzi’s Seven Poems of Robert Bridges. There will also be a new piece by the choir’s conductor, Richard Wilberforce. The Ladybirds Choir, directed by Helena Twentyman, will be presenting an afternoon of light-hearted entertainment around the theme of Jazz. They will be singing the songs of Ella Fitzgerald, who was born 100 years ago, and there will also be music by Gershwin, including highlights from Porgy and Bess. The concert is raising funds for the charity Dorking Besom and the singing will be followed by tea and cake! There is further choral music too. Mickleham Choral Society will be celebrating 10 years with their conductor Juliet Hornby. They will sing the lovely Fauré Requiem with orchestra and also some of Juliet and the choir’s favourite pieces. Brockham Choral Society presents ‘In the mood’, a café-style evening concert of swing and jazz, featuring music by Jo Garland, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Gershwin and more. You are invited to bring a picnic hamper and wine, and even dress in 30s style if you wish! The Dorking Halls has three screenings this month: a triple bill from the Royal Ballet (7th), a recording of Verdi’s La Traviata from Glyndebourne (12th), and a live relay from the Royal Opera House of Verdi’s Otello (28th). Also the Band of the Royal Marines will be playing a concert. This month’s lunchtime recital at St Martin’s will be given by Elizabeth Dobson and the London Choir. Watermill Jazz meets every week with the following performers: the Vein Trio (6th), Claire Martin (13th), the Fishwick Brothers Quintet (20th) and the Barry Harris Trio (27th).

DORKING MUSEUM IN JUNE Our new summer exhibition, “Time Gentlemen Please! The story of Dorking pubs”, is already a ‘must-see’ event. It plots the growth in the number of pubs from the earliest records in the 13th century to its peak in the 19th century and subsequent decline, revealing many of the town’s ‘lost inns’. In 1892, there were 46 licensed premises in Dorking – approximately one hostelry for every 240 residents! One of the earliest in the immediate area was the Fox and Hounds, founded in 1254. The present building dates from the 17th century, was later known as the Hare and Hounds and is now the Burford Bridge Hotel. Among the many ‘lost inns’ in the town itself were the Cardinal’s Hat and the George, both in what is now the High Street some time before 1485. Evidence of the George is still carefully preserved in the building that now houses The Lemon Tree gift shop. The Cardinal’s Hat reverted to a private residence and was rebuilt in the late 17th century as The Red Lion, perhaps the most important inn in Dorking at that time. In the 1590s, The Queen’s Arms became the largest, stretching from the corner of North Street as far as Mullins House in West Street with stables, yards, outbuildings and a bowling alley. The town’s hotels and inns came to provide a variety of other services to the local community – a theatre, sports and games venues (including cock-fighting!), offices for civic duties and for a range of trades-people (even a dentist!). The exhibition shows their significance and the roles they played in the lives of residents and travellers. Maps plot their locations, many with old photographs, paintings and drawings of how they looked in their heyday, while modern photographs show how they, or the buildings that have replaced them, look now.

37

Families are welcome at the exhibition – there is a pub sign drawing competition for children and a chance to try your hand at some old pub games. Other pub memorabilia are on display and a new 120-page book about Dorking pubs is available at the Museum. Guided Walks and Tours: Make the most of the better weather and the attractions of our beautiful area. The Museum’s guided walks and tours show some of the best that the area has to offer, are available for group bookings at a time to suit you, and hold regular Open Days for individual bookings. Our guided town walks take in the highlights of Historic Dorking or – to accompany our new exhibition – former and current Town Centre Pub sites (£3 per person). Or explore the history, landscape and views of the recently regenerated Deepdene Trail (£4 per person). Walks take 90 minutes. Do not miss our popular tours of Dorking’s famous 17th century South Street Caves. Tours last 45 minutes, £6 per person. See the Museum website for details, group bookings or Open Days (next Deepdene Trail 11th June, Dorking Pubs 24th June, Caves 24th June). The Museum is at 62 West Street, Dorking RH4 1BS. Open Thursday, Friday, Saturday 10.00am-4.00pm. Visit www.dorkingmuseum.org.uk . Enquiries to admin@dorkingmuseum.org.uk or phone 01306 876591.

AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT April / May The weather was ideal for the London Marathon so spectators were out in force to watch Kenyan, Mary Keitany, win the women’s race with a world record time of 2 hours 17:01 minutes. The men’s elite race was won by Kenya’s Daniel Wanjiru who managed to hold off a threat from that great runner Kenenisa Bekele. David Weir won his seventh London Marathon in the wheelchair race and it now looks as if he is set to continue racing after reports that he was going to retire. Forty-four year old Jo Pavey dropped out after 16 miles so her hopes of competing in the World Championships look finished. On Saturday 29th April, British boxer, Anthony Joshua, knocked out Wladimar Klitschko in a thrilling eleventh round of their epic fight at Wembley. Joshua has now had 19 wins from 19 fights since he became Olympic champion and has gone a long way to restoring the reputation of boxing due to his reasonable behaviour before and during fights. The Tour de Yorkshire is a three day road cycling race which this year started on Friday 28th April. There were 3 stages:Stage 1 – Bridlington to Scarborough. Stage 2 – Tadcaster to Harrogate. Stage 3 – Bradford to Fox valley Sheffield via Skipton. The race was won by Team Dimension rider Serge Pauwels of Belgium, after a strong performance on the hilly final stage. Britain seems to be losing its dominance of this particular sport. England’s cricketers beat Ireland by seven wickets in their first one day international played in Bristol on Friday 5th May. England’s spin bowler Adil Rashid took five wickets for 27 runs. The game was watched by a disappointingly small crowd of 6,411 people. In the second one day international two days later at Lord’s, England beat Ireland by 85 runs. Ireland put on a better display in this game and on occasions looked as if they might come close to upsetting England. 41

Chelsea secured the championship of the Premier League when they beat West Brom on Friday 12th May by one goal to nil . At the time of writing Chelsea have 87 points, 10 more than Tottenham. ‘It has been a great season,’ said their manager Antonio Conte.

North Holmwood Pre-School Thank you to the parents, carers and grandparents who came to watch the children sing their Easter songs at the end of last term. We raised £33 from the cake sale. The children were also invited to take part in a Spring Treasure Hunt over the Easter holidays and to date we have raised £88, which will go towards new equipment. This term we welcome eleven new children and we will be helping these children settle in. 43

Our theme this term is “People Who Help Us”; at home, at school, in shops, the police, the dentist, at church, in hospital and the fire service. We shall also visit the local Fire Station where the children will be able to look around the station and ask questions, sit inside a fire engine and have a go at knocking things over with the water hose! We will also mark St George’s Day and Shavuot. Now that the warmer weather is here the children will be out playing with the bikes, trikes, balls, hoops and all our other outdoor equipment. We will be holding our Annual Fun Run on 9th July to raise funds for our planned trip to the miniature railway in Leatherhead later in the term. We provide a lunch club every day for those parents who need a little extra time before picking up their children for a small charge. We also provide a sports activity, Kids@Sports run by Rupert Thorne on Tuesdays where the children take part in a variety of sports and games, which they absolutely love. Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers have finished, but you can still bring your remaining vouchers to us by 30th June 2017, which allow us to obtain free sports equipment. If you are interested in our Preschool, please feel free to call in and see us at the Village Hall. Children can join us from the start of the term after they are two years old. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 9.15am to 12.15pm. If you would like an information pack or would like to arrange a visit, please contact the Preschool leader, Julia Woollard, on 07931 212006.

HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk ‘The housework will still be there tomorrow, dear’. So said my lovely Nan, every time I would appear with grubby hands and muddy boots, having only come indoors because it got too dark to see. She was right, of course, the housework WAS always still there. I never did find the fairy who comes in and does it for you. I’m still looking…… But what else can you do? The nights are drawing out, it’s getting milder, and there’s so much to do! It’s the outside life for me. Always was, always will be. Now that things are growing so well, we have the constant battle against those pesky weeds. The other day it was a clump of sunflower seedlings. Something feathered decided the raised bed looked perfect as a dining table, but they clearly took too much food and couldn’t eat it all. Typical. Eyes bigger than it’s stomach. Trouble was, once I started…… I had half a bucket full by the time I finished. It was only supposed to take a second. Ah well. If the onions keep going at the rate they are, I might, MIGHT, have enough for a show entry. I keep talking nicely to them, I’m sure it helps. The beetroot have been very slow to start. Maybe it’s because I’m trying a weird and wonderful variety and I should have put the seeds in a different way up. Or sideways. Or perhaps upside down. Or facing NNE if planted before midday and SSW if after tea time. Who knows. The main thing is they are up and running, in a manner of speaking. I have been taking photographs in the hope of capturing that perfect moment, with ideal composition, in good light, the exact exposure, spot on focus……I’ll keep trying. Soon it will be time to make lots of jams for the Produce Stall, as well as lots of other nice things. If you find yourself with surplus soft fruit, or perhaps rhubarb, we would be delighted to turn it in to something yummy for the stall. Do let us know! 45

Our ongoing project with The Weald School is also in full swing. We still need more scaffold boards so if you see or hear of any needing a home, again let us know. We can always collect. The children are getting excited to grow things and are planning their entries…… There haven’t been any more twig-on-car-roof incidents I’m pleased to say. The crows have been happily ensconced in someone else’s chimney for the last few months. They seem to have raised their youngsters and are now enjoying an extended holiday. For us, the incubator has been doing the work. This year’s chicks are all growing well. The layers of the future….. hopefully! We have been watching our caterpillars grow, change in to chrysalides and emerge as beautiful butterflies. It really is a truly remarkable metamorphosis. All of nature is really, we just need to stop and appreciate it. Plus of course, we can reap the rewards when everything grows for us! Hopefully you are starting to see potential show entries in your gardens and veggie plots too; we are looking forward to seeing the marquee full to bursting with all your produce. Remember to have a look through your Show Schedule and see how many classes you could enter. Put the Show date in your diary – Saturday 15th July, tell your family and friends, come along and enjoy what is always a great afternoon and perhaps get a group together for the ever popular Race Night in the evening! Bring a picnic, buy a beer and see what you could win! Please contact Kate Fryer (01306 741476, katejfryer@yahoo.co.uk) to reserve your table. It’s worth being there just for the water jump alone….. Sunday is, of course, Dog Show day and we look forward to welcoming you and your faithful friends. Rosettes and prizes aplenty! Plus BBQ and beer tent for owners of course…. I really should get on with the vacuuming now. I’ll just pop out and check the onions first……… Sarah Jackson Do have a look at our website for information, photos, show schedules……www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk 46

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust June 2017

News from the Common Holmwood’s Dormice in the News We've mentioned ‘our’ dormice on various occasions but now they have won wider coverage in a recent news release from the National Trust. During April, Ranger Sophie was helping to check the nesting boxes and discovered a female dormouse. “I could hear her snoring very quietly as she sat in my hand,” said Sophie. “Dormice are so elusive - everyone gets quite excited when we find one. She had just come out of hibernation and we could see the first wisp of a nest in her box. She was about the size of an avocado nut and weighed 17g, which is normal for this time of year.” The full report and a photograph of the dormouse discovered by Sophie will be included in the members’ newsletter; or visit the Friends' Facebook page.

Natural Play Area At the time of writing this column we are still looking forward to the 'grand opening' of the play area on Holmwood Common but, by the time you read this, we will have posted a collection of photos to our Facebook page and Friends members will be reading a full report in the monthly electronic newsletter.

Do you remember the Great Storm of 1987? The National Trust will be holding an exhibition to commemorate 30 years since the Great Storm of 1987. The event will be held in Leith Hill Place on weekends throughout October and will include photographs and stories from properties throughout the region. It is hoped that members of the public will share their individual tales and photographs from the time. If you have any contributions 50

that you think might be of interest then please contact Ranger Sophie (email: sophie.parker@nationaltrust.org.uk or call her on 07785 771509 or 01306 712711)

Ranger Rob's Report It is still early May as I write and the ash trees seem very slow in coming into leaf this year. This could be because ash, unlike oak, likes warmer days to get going and we’ve had rather a lot of cold, overcast days recently. Taking a wider view though, one internet site mentions oak now coming into leaf about two weeks earlier than 30 years ago with ash about seven to ten days earlier … presumably because climate change means warmer springs. The new natural play area at the North Holmwood end of the Common is completed with hopefully, hordes of youngsters now clambering over the various oak logs. As always with a project of this nature, numerous people were involved: the Friends for suggesting the idea and funding the project; local contractor Richard Case for digging some extremely deep holes much to the relief of the volunteers; the volunteers who still had to do some digging in the very hard, dry ground; and local tree surgeon Duncan Gregory from North Holmwood, who donated his time and expertise to prepare a climbing tree. Many thanks to all of you. And now it's over to you and your children to enjoy.

SOUNDS STRANGE There are still quite a few people called Richard today but some saints’ names sound very strange to our modern ears - how many of these names are saint’s names and how many of them are something else altogether? Answers at the bottom of the page. 1 Wenceslas 2 Mesrop 3 Blaise 4 Porphyry 5 Waudru 6 Methodius 7 Attracta 8 Sebbi 9 Fiacre 10 Budoc

St RICHARD of CHICESTER St Richard of Chichester, who lived from 1197 to 1253, is patron saint of the English county of Sussex. In 1244 Richard was elected Bishop of Chichester but King Henry III wanted someone else as bishop and he ordered that no one should feed or house Richard. So Richard lived with a friend who was a parish priest and visited his entire diocese on foot for two years until the King relented. Richard is widely remembered today for the prayer he is supposed to have said as he was dying. The prayer was adapted for the song ‘Day by Day’ in the musical Godspell and it is in this form that most people know it today: Day by day, Dear Lord, of thee three things I pray: To see thee more clearly, Love thee more dearly, Follow thee more nearly, Day by Day.

What do you call a man with a map on his head? Miles. What do you call a woman with a tortoise on her head? Shelley. What do you call a man checking your homework? Mark. What do you call a Vicar on a moped? Rev. Answer: all of them are saints listed in the Penguin Dictionary of Saints – honestly.
