Dear friends, May and June 2016 have the potential to be hugely influential for St John’s Church. For a start, as this is being printed, Steve Cox will be preparing a Vision Day for the St John’s community and by the time you read this it may have taken place. We will have had the space to consider who “we” (St John’s Church community) are and what we feel called to focus on in the coming months and years. We will have had the opportunity to discover anew who we are as a community and which direction we are heading in. After around ten years of hard work raising the majority of the funds for the Community Building, the building is nearly finished – such a testament to the hard work of so many people, from the initial vision of my predecessor, Caroline Corry. Thank you, to all who have been involved over the years in the Community Building Project and to all who supported the Vision Day. No sooner has the Vision Day finished than Caroline Lazenby, followed closely by Jane Schofield, will be going to their “Bishop’s Advisory Panel (BAP)”, to discern whether they should train for ordained ministry. I used to think of this as a bit like the “Big Brother House” but, on reflection, it is probably more like “I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!”. There are 16 people at a BAP, split into two groups of eight. Each person has activities to do, interviews to attend and group tasks to take part in. At the end, a report is written to the bishop about each person, giving a recommendation on whether they should train for ordination. News of the results can take a while to come through, with a report being written and the bishop then studying it, but by the end of June it is likely that both Caroline and Jane will know a bit more about the future. So, by the time of the July/August Spire, it is possible that much will have become clearer. As a community we might have a better idea of what our aim is now that the Community Building Project is (nearly) finished. As a community, we will also know whether any 5

combination of Jane and Caroline might be training to, ultimately, be additional clergy for St John’s. We have been working on the Community Building Project for so long that it can be a little difficult to think beyond the building process to that difficult question of, “What are we going to do now?”. But, by the time the July/August edition of The Spire is printed, we might have a bit more of an idea. Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart

News from The Priory School As you may have heard, after 20 years of leading The Priory School, the headteacher, Mr Sohatski, will be retiring this Summer. At the time of writing, the governing body are in the process of recruiting his successor. I am sure that you will join me in wishing Mr Sohatski all the very best for his retirement. In the week leading up to Easter, the school held its annual ‘prayer spaces’ week. The Chaplaincy team transformed the two RE classrooms into interactive prayer spaces and many students visited the rooms during their lessons that week. The feedback from the students was very positive as always. We also held an optional Easter Communion service for students in the same week. Over 90 students attended this service with some students joining with members of the chaplaincy team to form a worship band. The Chaplaincy team are currently planning for this year’s ‘OMG’ week and the year 7 retreats. This will be the school’s fourth ‘OMG’ week. The aim of the week is to organise activities and events that take place in lesson times that give students opportunities to engage with the Christian faith in different ways. The year 7 retreats take place at Holy Trinity, Westcott, over 2 days, with half the year group attending each day in turn. Various activities are organised which allow the students time to reflect on their time at The Priory. There will be many other school trips and events taking place this term, including sports day, the year 7 Geography trip to Box Hill, the year 10 trip to France, year 12 work experience and the school production, which this year will be ‘Bugsy Malone’. Please remember these activities, trips and events in your prayers, as well as the year 11 and 6th form students as they sit their public examinations, the results of which will impact their future life choices.

A year 8 student has written about his experience of The Priory so far:

My experiences at The Priory School My name is Curtis and I am in year 8. I am a proud member of the Priory CofE School in Dorking. The Priory is a great school with lots of fun activities: for example I do swimming, football and cricket and also I sometimes do rugby. We have a new house system and the houses are called Guildford, Westminster, Coventry and Canterbury. I am in Guildford. We now have house captains, one boy and one girl from each year group for each house; I am the captain of Guildford. We do something every year called the swimarathon. About 24 people represent the school in a 1 hour swim. I’ve taken part both years I have been at this school. It is very fun and everyone enjoys it. You don’t have to be a great swimmer: you just have to be able to swim a length, so if you get the chance take part, you will love it. The structure of our school day is as follows: Tutor time or Assembly then Lesson 1, afterwards we have lesson 2, then break, after break we have lesson 3, after lesson 3 we have lunch. We get a 45 minute lunch break and a 15 minute break. When lunch is over we go back to our tutor room where we get registered. After registration we have lesson 4, and then lesson 5. Lesson 5 is the last lesson of the school day. We have lots of school buses that take us home if our parents can’t come and get us, for a fee of £1.05. In our school SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) inspection we got O for outstanding. We are one of the best schools in Surrey, so anyone out there looking for a secondary school for your child, The Priory CofE School, Dorking will do you proud - they have already done me proud.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!! 18

CO-INCIDENCES OR GOD INCIDENT? Over recent months I have been concerned about how we could increase corporate prayer within the life of St John's Church. Then, during one week in April, two separate packs of literature were delivered to me. One was a magazine that contained an advert about “developing prayer gifts in your church”. The second was a booklet that contained a flyer about a National Prayer Weekend which is to be organised by CWR (Crusade for World Revival) - a Christian organisation that I worked for when I first left school - yes, many years ago! Then, at the Sunday service at the end of the same week, I was given a hymn book which had stuck in the back of it a prayer for the parish. Co-incidences or a God incident? The National Prayer Weekend is about local people praying for their neighbourhood which can transform the nation. One life, one street, one community at a time. At the heart of the weekend is the desire to see people in our local communities know and encounter God through the power of prayer. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, encourages the weekend: “When we have a Church that prays and is reconciled and reconciling and that tell people confidently about Jesus, then the dawn will break, hope will rise, our countries will be transformed and the empty threats of economies and terrorists will be utterly and finally overthrown. To God be the glory.” The National Prayer Weekend is 23rd - 25th September and St John's Church will be taking part. What perfect timing - 2 weeks after Bishop Andrew has opened our new Community Building - let's make a good start by immersing it and the community we wish to serve in prayer! Please make a note of the weekend in your diary - more information will follow as I receive it.

Guildford Diocesan Summer School 2016 explores Abundant Life As spring arrives so does the launch of the annual Summer School programme – this year themed Abundant Life: Exploring a Christian Vision for Living – resonating with the recent survey into our existing diocesan mission strategy Common Purpose with its themes of growth and abundance: growing deeper, bigger and wider. Abundant Life offers 15 sessions between 4th - 16th July all around the diocese – many of them FREE – from a wide range of contributors offering a Christian vision of abundant life in the everyday activities of work and rest, art and play, prayer and friendship, as well as in the bigger picture of culture, environment and politics. Summer School fortnight ends with a FREE Abundant Life festival morning, with a keynote address by Pete Greig, the founder of the 24/7 prayer movement. “We have a really exciting and varied range of content for this year’s programme – I hope there is something for everyone,” says organiser the Revd Matt Prior, discipleship development adviser. “From retired Major General Tim Cross, speaking on being a confident Christian in the heat of public life, the former Attorney General the Rt Hon Dominic Grieve MP, on the way ahead for Britain after June’s EU referendum, to the leading theologian Mike Ovey on what understanding God as Trinity has to offer to current debates about human identity. “Local favourites are returning too such as Julie Gittoes engaging in ‘café theology’ and Suzette Jones, who’ll be helping us to think positively with disability during Paralympic year. There’ll also be a chance to visit the World Wildlife Centre in Woking as part of a Tearfund session and to think about whole-life discipleship with a speaker from the London Institute of Contemporary Christianity.” More detail on Abundant Life and all 15 sessions is available online at www.cofeguildford.org.uk/summerschool 23

Looking a little ahead, Holmbury St Mary choral society will hold its summer concert on 2nd July - details next time. The Dorking Philharmonia has a programme of music from the classical period. They will be playing Mozart’s overture to his opera Cosi fan tutte, an early Haydn symphony plus his trumpet concerto, with soloist Richard Knights, and Beethoven’s eighth symphony - a work which the composer referred to as his ‘little symphony’ although, in fact, it is full of energy. Opera lovers can see Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, performed by Surrey Opera at the Dorking Halls. Also at the Halls are two opera screenings: Rossini’s The Barber of Seville live from Glyndebourne, and Massenet’s Werther live from the Royal Opera. There is also a film relating the story of La Scala, the world-famous opera house in Milan. There are two recitals at Leith Hill Place, the home of Ralph Vaughan Williams, arranged in association with the Royal College of Music. Details of performers and programmes are on the website. There will be further recitals in July and a special Vaughan Williams birthday concert in October. The band of the Royal Marines will be playing at Dorking Halls, joined by two local school choirs and a violinist. Their programme of music should appeal to all tastes and is given in aid of the charity Seafarers UK. The Applause Youth Theatre Company performs Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. As well as the two evening performances, there is also a matinee on 25th at 2.30pm. This month’s lunchtime concert at St Martin’s will be given by guitarist David Massey. Watermill Jazz meets every Tuesday evening at Betchworth Park Golf Club. The programme for June is: Kate Williams Four Plus Three (7th), Café Society Swing (14th), Arun Ghosh Quintet (21st), and Beats & Pieces Big Band (28th). Lots of music for everyone, I think! 25

HOLMWOOD WI ARE you a cool or warm person, does your colouring favour spring, summer or autumn colours? Members of Holmwood WI found out all about their choice of clothes, depending on colouring and shape, from Alison Hoyland at their meeting on the first Wednesday afternoon in May. Alison was a delightful speaker whose talk passed quickly as she demonstrated on our programme organiser Pat Lawless the rights and wrongs of colour choices. Luckily Pat was pleased to learn she was wearing all the right colours. Our thought-provoking Resolutions Meeting ran efficiently with Valerie Homewood setting out the arguments for and against. Our President, Wendy Lloyd, will be representing us and surrounding WIs at the June AGM in Brighton. A mouth-watering tea ended our action-packed afternoon. To find out more about Holmwood WI contact our secretary: Maureen Lewington on 01306 882057 or email maureen.lewington@btinternet.com

A ROYAL SUMMER CELEBRATION THE LADYBIRDS CHOIR Directed by Helena Twentyman

SATURDAY 18th JUNE AT 3PM UNITED REFORMED CHURCH HALL, DORKING Music on the subject of kings and queens forms the backbone of the Ladybirds Choir’s summer concert, A Royal Summer Celebration, given in honour of the Queen as she celebrates her ninetieth birthday. Songs will include the rousing Long live Elizabeth from Merrie England by Edward German and two numbers from The King and I, as well as songs with a more obscure connection such as one by the pop group Queen and three classics from Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll. Other songs such as Summer Holiday and Sunny Afternoon embody the hazy, lazy, sun-drenched days of summer which we hope to be experiencing in mid-June! This year the Ladybirds Choir is delighted to be supporting PSDS, a local charity that provides support for children with Down syndrome and their families. PSDS was set up in 2006 by Dorking resident Helen Shiers and two other mums, all who had babies born with Down syndrome within a few months of each other. The charity runs a series of groups, activities and educational programmes and provides a host of other services which benefit both the children, their parents and all family members. As it receives no external funding and now requires £100,000 a year to keep running, the group are constantly coming up with news ways to fundraise. Please join us on at 3pm Saturday 18 June at the United Reformed Church Hall in Dorking. Tea and cake will be served after the concert. Tickets are priced at £7.50 and are available on the door or in advance from Jenny on 01737 843662.

In February we printed a letter from Capt John Worsfold outlining his move from North Holmwood, becoming a First Order brother in the Society of St Francis and leaving to become a Church Army Officer, while remaining in the Third Order. He has sent us another letter, asking for prayer:

Dear Friends at St John's Church, Please would you join with me in praying each day for a 2l-year-old American student called Otto Warmbier? Otto went to North Korea as a tourist. Otto is a Christian and wanted to take a souvenir back to America for his church. He was caught trying to steal a propaganda banner. He confessed and was put in prison for some weeks awaiting his trial. At the beginning of March, this year, he went before North Korea's highest court - the Supreme Court. In a one-hour trial he was found guilty of subversion and sentenced to fifteen years hard labour in one of North Korea's notorious prison camps. Unless drastic action is taken by the outside world I don't believe Otto will ever leave North Korea alive. All those found practising Christianity or those who oppose the Government are sent to the prison camps. No one leaves these camps alive. I believe Otto has been used as a scapegoat for two reasons: firstly he was a practising Christian and secondly he is an American. As a Third Order Franciscan brother I have to be prepared to speak out against all injustice in the name of Christ, but that also goes for all Christians too. We must be prepared to speak out against everything that is unjust, and I believe that the sentence Otto has been given for his crime is very unjust. What do you think? The prison camps in North Korea are hell on earth. The food is very poor and prisoners supplement this by catching rats and snakes and eating them raw. Human life is seen as of no value and prisoners are executed for trivial misdemeanours. Please pray for Otto - that he be given strength by God to go through this terrible ordeal, that Otto always remembers that God loves him so much and that Otto continues, when he is able, to pray. Pray also for Otto's family and friends who must be going 28

through a terrible time at the moment, not knowing what is happening to him and knowing there is the possibility that they will never see him again. If you could take Otto to your hearts, as I have done, and please write and let anyone in high authority know how concerned we are about Otto, I would be truly grateful. With love and prayers to you all in Jesus our Lord

John Capt John Bruce Worsfold CA TSSF (some of the more detailed description of the ill treatment of prisoners has been omitted)

You are invited to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at 4pm on Sunday 12th June at Jolly John’s Playfarm (behind St John’s School) Light refreshments will be served at 4.15pm. A short act of worship will take place at 5.00pm. There will be a competition for the most impressive home-made hat. Please dress fit for a Queen.

COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT We are nearly there!

The opening by Bishop Andrew is on 11th September. By this date the main building work will be completed but there may still be some extra bits to do. The PCC has now set up a group to make the arrangements for the opening. The PCC has also established a small group to look into the running of the building as we need to make sure that we have a proper system in place. An ideal arrangement would be to have the building manned each weekday in the morning, perhaps from 10.00am to midday. The person on duty could sort the post, answer the phone, keep records and perhaps even make coffee for anyone who wanted to drop in. Could you help with this? After our recent appeal we have received some generous donations and grants for which we are most grateful. We are in the last stages of determining the final cost of the building, taking into account extra items that have been required to meet regulations or to improve the building. We now estimate that we are around £25,000 short of the basic costs – and that does not include furniture and some other finishing.

DORKING MUSEUM IN JUNE The War Memorials Project Since the centenary of its outbreak, Dorking Museum has been holding a programme of special exhibitions exploring the impact that the Great War 1914-18 had on local life. The third, ‘Dorking 1916’, will open this autumn. At the same time, our War Memorials Project has been building a detailed record of, and memorial to, local men who fell in the Great War. Museum volunteers started by identifying and researching the lives of those named on Dorking’s South Street memorial and this has been extended to include other local memorials. As well as contact with some of the families, we are also pleased to have the support of local groups and researchers who have given access to their research and expertise. We are grateful to Jim Edwards for allowing us to use his research for his booklet for St John’s Church, North Holmwood. The research on 1916 casualties is progressing well – a major undertaking, with the centenaries of the major naval Battle of Jutland and the disastrous Battle of the Somme. So many local stories and so many young lives. Among the North Holmwood casualties, Lance Corporal Percy Short, 33, of Beldhams Farm, was killed in action on the first day of the Somme, less than six months after his wedding to Kate Warren at St John’s Church. Another who fell on the same day, named on the St John’s Church memorial, was Captain Olaf Cuthbert, 25, of Brookmeadow in Mid Holmwood Lane, whose cousin, 2nd Lieutenant Edward Bovill, 29, was also killed that day. The research takes us down many other interesting roads. Captain Herbert Connell Whipple, from Devon, is of local interest as he spent 35

much time in Dorking. His uncle was Dr William Lascelles Batson of Dorking and his father-in-law later moved to the town. Herbert fell in battle in France in November 1914, as did his cousin, Lieutenant Alfred Batson, only four months later. Herbert’s widow, Joan, later became engaged to an English national hero, Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson VC, who died of influenza in 1918 after his ordeal as a prisoner of war. There is still work to complete research on 1916 casualties and we would welcome more help going on to 1917 and 1918, including the centenary of Passchendaele. Previous experience of genealogy research would be welcome but training can be provided. Work can be done from home – indeed, the full story of Captain Whipple was sent to us by Lenka, our farthest distant volunteer in the Czech Republic. If you are interested, please contact admin@dorkingmuseum.org.uk Our current exhibition is “Dorking High Street: Chaos and Commerce”, featuring paintings and archive photographs of the High Street, open Thursday to Saturday, 10am-4pm, at The Museum, 62 West Street. See www.dorkingmuseum.org.uk, Facebook and Twitter. Tel: 01306 876591. Family Activity, Saturday 18th June: ‘Take Part Art’, an exciting opportunity to take part in creating a unique work of art of embossed metal foil tiles based on patterns found in the Museum or in and about Dorking. The art work will be displayed in the Museum during August and September. Drop in any time between 2.00pm and 3.30pm. Ideal for families with children up to age ten. Free with regular Museum entry. The Museum is taking group bookings for the South Street Caves tours and Guided Walks of Dorking and individual bookings for the Caves Open Day on 25th June. Samara Levy’s Aid Appeal - A Big Thank you! “Relief of suffering through the provision of humanitarian aid in the Middle East and elsewhere.” Thank you to all those that took part in this appeal. Following a brisk couple of weeks of collecting and sorting, our collection is now safely down at the warehouse in Worthing awaiting shipment to the Middle East. Thanks to the generous loan of a van I was able to use banana boxes for this shipment, which is Samara’s preferred method. All of the boxes were very generously donated by Waitrose, and we filled about 150 of these. In addition to this we also had donated about twenty box loads of winter clothes which Derek Tighe has very generously allowed to be stored at St Martin’s until the next appeal. Unless there is a sudden outbreak of peace in Syria and Iraq then I am afraid that you can expect me to be harassing you again at some time in October. In the meantime I am so grateful to Derek, who has agreed that all of these collections can be held at St Martin’s. This is a huge boon to us but it does place a disproportionate amount of extra work onto their people. In addition to the work of sending clothes and medical supplies Samara is also focusing on raising regular funds to pay for a hospital in Syria. She is in daily contact with a doctor there who sends harrowing accounts from the field, including IS roadblocks and bombing raids. So far all of his team have been safe and they are sustained by the prayer that they know is protecting them. It would be great if you could include “Doctor A” and his team in your prayer meetings. If you feel that raising funds to help pay the salaries of the medical team in the hospital in Syria is something that you could be a part of please let me know. Thanks again

Holmwood Marketplace and Village Breakfast Events in North Holmwood March this year was the third anniversary of Holmwood Marketplace; the monthly indoor market events we’ve been running at North Holmwood Village Hall since March 2013. Last summer we changed the format slightly and opened a breakfast cafe instead of the ‘Seasonal Nutrition’ lunchtime cafe we’d been running previously. This change was popular with visitors and helpers alike, responding to the abundance of annual events in the area which people were keen to attend. It meant we could potentially support the work of others rather than compete against it. We continued the Village Breakfast Cafe over the winter months and tried to launch a bigger and better market. This was not completely successful and we feel we should accept that the community interest is not sufficient to support the market element. That said, we do feel the events provide an opportunity for local groups to promote their work, and for a small range of stallholders, particularly those wishing to try out new products or services, to present their goods to the public. It’s also an opportunity for local gardeners to sell seasonal produce. From May 2016 we will be advertising our monthly events as Breakfast Cafes, although there will be some stalls, and we particularly welcome local groups that want to raise their profile in the area. Furthermore, we are looking for local groups wishing to use our events as fundraisers for their own cause. Please contact us if you are interested to partner with us for a specific event; dates currently available in 2016 are 25th June, 23rd July, 27th August, 22nd October and 26th November. Contact Jacqui on 07973 207087 for further details.

HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk Summer Show Weekend Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July 2016 Old School Field, South Holmwood Saturday 16th – Summer Show (1-4pm) and Family Race Night (7.30pm) Sunday 17th – Fun Dog Show (1.30-4.30pm) followed by Songs of Praise (5.15pm) Summer Show – Free entry You’ve gotta roll with the times to stay relevant, and this year no-one can say the VPA is stuck in the past with the inclusion in the Summer Show schedule of a Minecraft category for the young things (bringing us bang up to about 2009). It’s all about making a paper Minecraft character, downloading it as a 2D template from the internet and assembling it into a 3D model. It’s a simple process you’ll recall from school: cut it out (with your round ended scissors); attach tab A to flap B; tuck flange C into slot D; fold E, F and G along the dotted lines and glue them in reverse onto overhang notches H, I and J ….by which point you’ll be scrunching the whole thing up and hurling it across the room into the bin. Luckily it’s a task today’s 10-year-olds will, quite likely, manage with ease. Pop into the Grand Marquee at the Summer Show to see how everyone got on, with this and all the other flower, veg, baking, photos and craft classes (details in your orange Show Schedule or online at www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk). There’s still plenty of time to 45

plan your exhibits and clear a space on the mantelpiece for some silverware or get your 10-year-old to put together a new flat pack display cabinet. As always, the Summer Show will provide a great afternoon’s entertainment, with Punch and Judy, Tug of War, bouncy slide, face painting, china smash and coconut shy. There’ll be a range of stalls including plants, Dorking sauce and produce, handmade cards, woodcraft, bags, bunting, Usborne books, Norbury Blue cheese, jewellery, silk flowers, sausages and umbrellas, together with a Vintage Ice Cream Van, BBQ, Beer tent and Holmwood WI teas and cakes. Family Race Night – £2 per person on the door Everyone has a chance to be a jockey for the night, riding the (hobby) horses and competing in races including The Holmwood Derby, The Beare Green Gallop and the Apprentices’ Cup (for under 18-year-old riders). How far your horse gallops is determined by a throw of the dice – will you be the first to cross the finishing line? Bring a picnic and buy Pimms, beer, soft drinks and crisps in the tent. Entry is just £2 per person payable on the door – so if you’re feeling lucky come and have a flutter and an evening of family fun. Fun Dog Show, followed by BSA uncovered Holmwood and Beare Green are full of dog lovers, so come and have fun showing off your four legged family member at the annual Dog Show, with fun show classes and an agility course for all dogs and owners to enjoy. Register your dog for as many classes as you wish; as usual to include Golden Oldie, Rescue dog, fastest sausage eater and the dog with the best child handler, with rosettes and glory for the winners. BBQ, beer, teas and cakes available for man/woman and beast to enjoy. After the presentation of the cup for the Best in Show, BSA will lead straight into a short al fresco Songs of Praise service, for a relaxed celebration with friends. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in.

VPA Family Race Night Saturday 16th July 2016, 7.30pm

In the Grand Marquee, Old School Field, South Holmwood. £2 entry per person on the door. Come and enjoy the thrill of the races at this evening of galloping family fun – with a paddock full of well-turned out mounts (of the fabric and stick variety) to choose from and a racecourse marked out in the Grand Marquee. Nominate a jockey for your team, spur them on with throws of the dice, and compete against the other teams to get your horse’s nose across the finish line first! The evening’s race-card will include: The Holmwood Derby; The Beare Green Gallop; The Apprentices’ Cup (for jockeys under 18 years of age); The Ladies’ Day Chase; The Fifty Shades of Grey Stakes (for jockeys of a certain age); The Donkey Trot (last to cross the line wins); The Quick Splash Steeplechase. We are pleased to learn that our Armchair Duffer has left his chair and is back at his computer after his illness:

AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT - April / May The London Marathon is always a very watchable event and this year the cold weather made it a perfect day for long distance running. The men’s race was won in incredible style by Kenyan, Eliud Kipehoge, in 2:03:05, the fastest time ever run round London and just 8 seconds short of the world record. Jemima Sumgong also from Kenya won the women’s race despite falling heavily and banging her head early on. Brothers Callum and Derek Hawkins, Tsegai Tewelde, Alyson Dixon and Sonia Samuels all hit the Olympic standard time, qualifying them to represent Great Britain to run the marathon in the Olympic games at Rio later this year. Tom Daley looks as if he is in good shape ahead of the Olympics as he managed to win Silver in the 10 metre platform at the World series diving event in Kazan, Russia. Chen Alsen of China took Gold. Tonia Crouch won the Silver medal in the women’s 10 metre platform. It was her career best dive. Forty-five-year-old jockey Frankie Dettori had a classic success at Newmarket on Saturday 30th April when he won the 2000 Guineas, riding Galileo Gold. His win came 40 years after his father, Gianfranco, won the 2000 Guineas on Wollow and 20 years after he himsef won it for the first time on Mark of Esteem. Leicester City FC who started the season as 5000-1 outsiders to win the Premier League completed the most unbelievable, incredible title success in the history of football by becoming Premier League Champions this year. The reason for their success is put down to a great team spirit, togetherness and optimism, and sound coaching and man management by their Manager, Claudio Ranieri. It is interesting to note that the Leicester City squad cost just £57 million compared to the £210 million and above spent on some of the teams they have beaten. 50

British boxer, Amir Khan, who took an enormous risk to reach up more than one division from welterweight to challenge Canelo Alvarez, the middleweight Champion of the World, was knocked out in the sixth round. He still remains the main challenger for the welterweight title. Great Britain topped the medal table at the European rowing Championships held in Germany. Helen Glover and Heather Stanning kept their women’s pair title yet again.

The story behind the HYMN: Lord, for the years This well-loved hymn was written in 1967 by the Rev Timothy Dudley Smith, who later became Bishop of Thetford. Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided, urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way, sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided: Lord for the years, we bring our thanks today. Lord, for that word, the word of life which fires us, speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze, teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us: Lord of the word, receive your people’s praise. The hymn continued to be widely sung and loved, until in 2002 Timothy Dudley Smith was asked to write an extra verse so that it could be sung around the time of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and this is equally appropriate now for the Queen’s 90th Birthday: Lord for our hopes, the dreams of all our living, Christ and his kingdom one united aim, Rulers and peoples bound in high thanksgiving, Lord of our hopes, our trust is in your Name. Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust June 2016 News from the Common Members who attended the Friends’ AGM will recall the list of projects that were under consideration for development during the coming year. So, we are pleased to report that we have agreed in principle with the National Trust that we will support the installation of additional benches, especially around the Circular Trail, and a natural play area that we hope will encourage more families to visit and enjoy the Common. Please join us in welcoming Nicky Scott to the National Trust team looking after Leith Hill & Holmwood Common. Nicky has taken over from Sam Bayley as Lead Ranger and shares her first impressions of Holmwood Common with us, below. Ranger’s Report Regular readers of this column will recall that, back in April 2015 whilst clearing one of the footpaths, the volunteers discovered a solitary dormouse snoozing in the undergrowth. As a consequence thirty nest boxes were installed in the hope of determining whether there was, in fact, a resident population of this relatively rare little creature. The good news is that, during a recent check, not one but two, dormice were found in one of the boxes. Congratulations to David Lloyd who was recently presented with the National Trust Leith Hill and Holmwood Common Volunteer Award for 2015. My personal thanks to David for his continuing help in looking after the Common throughout the year and, as David commented, the award also reflects the close working relationship between the Friends and the National Trust. The long days of June bring the opportunity to get up and out really early and listen to the dawn chorus. Also, enjoy watching the swifts and swallows chasing insects. The hedgerows, meadows and woodlands are bursting with growth. The hawthorn blossom is 52

fading, but the elder blooms light up the tracksides with their big disks of creamy pungent flowers. Rob Adam, Ranger, Holmwood Common. Holmwood Common … first impressions My first ever visit to Holmwood Common was towards the end of the winter, just prior to my interview for the role of Lead Ranger with the National Trust. It was a rather chilly and dreary winter’s day with the drizzle running off the leafless branches to be met by the squelching mud below. The Common was not looking its best but my friend Rita and I persisted through the rain, but grateful at the end of it all to be heading for the warmth and comfort of home. Fast forward several weeks, when – as the newly appointed Lead Ranger – I returned to the Common to see it with new eyes on a glorious day in May and just how spring had arrived! I seemed only to have looked away for a moment to miss the transition from bud burst to first leaf. Then seemingly overnight, first leaf had transformed into a verdant canopy with even the usually sluggish oak in lime green splendour. I was delighted to find the common in bloom with the delicate blossoms of cherry and crab-apple, the gaudy yellow of gorse, and the spectacular show of bluebells that this spring has produced, now punctuated along the verges by starry-white greater stitchwort. As I continued along the rides – thankfully now firmer underfoot – an abundance of yellow tip and brimstone butterflies flashed past, the sound of robins and great tits filled the air, and I thought to myself “well this is not bad after all!” In fact it’s very good! I am genuinely delighted at the prospect of becoming properly acquainted with the Common and with everyone who is a part of it.
