Dear friends, What an exciting time it is in the church! Near the end of May we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit to transform each of us into the people God is calling us to be. We heard in scripture about what effect the Holy Spirit had on those first followers of Jesus and can see the effect it has on us, here, today. At St John’s we also have the exciting situation of Jane and Caroline exploring whether God might be calling them to ordained ministry as “Ordained Local Ministers” – in other words, whether God might be calling them to be priests in His Church. This is a long process of prayer, reading, thinking, listening, and discerning before even getting to the point of starting to train. It may be that both Jane and Caroline are eventually ordained; it may be that only one is, or even neither. We need to discern whether God is actually calling them to this ministry. Ordained Local Ministers (OLMs) are called from a particular parish and train to continue serving that parish after ordination – the same as Jenny Firth at St Paul’s and Stuart Peace at St Martin’s – which means that we as a parish we would have to agree to support anyone who was accepted to train for such a ministry from this parish. Should the diocese feel that a person is called to be a priest (and, in the case of OLM, the parish supports them), a senior priest from the diocese prepares that person for a “Bishop’s Advisory Panel” (otherwise known as a BAP). It’s a bit like a church version of the Big Brother House, where up to 16 people spend three days together, with various interviews and activities, before a report is written to the Bishop advising whether they feel each person is called to be a priest and ready to train for such a calling. Then, training begins for three years. But, of course, these are not the only exciting things happening at St John’s. At the last PCC meeting, the PCC decided that sufficient 5

funds were in place for us to instruct our architect to write a “letter of intent” to a building company regarding the building project. What this means is that we have agreed to start building – and current plans are that building should start in October and be finished in time for Easter! I am sure that everyone will agree with me that this is really exciting but, to make it even better for me personally, the builder has agreed that I can drive a digger... In the midst of excitement about the new building becoming reality, amongst the excitement of people exploring possible priestly ministry (and, of course, looking forward to driving a digger), we remember that God is with us – and has promised each of us the gift of His Holy Spirit to transform our lives. Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart

Knit One, Purl One, Save One (KOPOSO) St John’s knitting group The group do their knitting for charity and have been buying the wool themselves. They would welcome donations of double knit in any colour. Please see Margaret Teale if you can help. In Dorking the wool is sold in various places including the Goodwyns shop, The Factory Shop, the knitting shop in West Street and in the Friends of Dorking Hospital Shop. Further afield Wilkinsons also sell it.

Village Day at North Holmwood 11:00 to 15:00 Saturday 26th September North Holmwood Sports Club Preparations for the event to be held this autumn are now well underway. We are grateful to everyone who has come forward to help on the steering group, to help with specific jobs on the day and to help in the lead up to the event. Several people who were involved in previous village days have been very generous with sharing their experiences, for which we are most grateful. I noticed there are some photos from the 2009 event on the Church website. It is a good reminder of how wonderful the events were previously and the fabulous legacy left in the community by those that gave up so much time and energy to make the day run smoothly. Having spoken to a number of people in the community, a special mention should be made of the Vikings; clearly a number of children have not forgotten the games on the green and we hope for future years we may be invaded again, but alas not this year. Watch this space for more news next month, and please do get in touch if you would like to know more or be involved in any way. Jacqui Johnston Mob: 07973 207087 Email: jacqui@communityrealm.org.uk

THE JOY OF DANCE: A CELEBRATION IN SONG LADYBIRDS CHOIR DIRECTED BY HELENA TWENTYMAN While you don’t actually have to bring your dancing shoes, your toes will certainly be tapping along to the polkas, waltzes and much more on offer at the Ladybirds Choir’s summer concert, The Joy of Dance: A Celebration in Song, on Saturday 6th June at 3pm in the United Reformed Church Hall, Dorking. As well as Shall we dance?, the classic song from The King and I, you will hear I could have danced all night from My Fair Lady, the beautiful Merry Widow Waltz, the delightfully nostalgic Kerry Dance and many other songs with dance associations both well-known and not so familiar. The 100th anniversary of Frank Sinatra’s birth will also be celebrated with a performance of some of his most popular numbers, along with a poem marking 800 years since the signing of the Magna Carta. This year we are pleased to be supporting Dyscover, a small charity based in Walton-on-the-Hill, which offers long-term support and opportunities to sufferers of aphasia. Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain injury, usually a stroke, and affects a person’s ability to speak, read, write and understand language. This can be extremely isolating and frustrating but Dyscover offers a supportive environment and stimulating programme of activities which helps people to maximise their communication skills, build up their confidence and re-engage with life. Tea and cake will be served after the concert. Tickets are priced at £7.50 and are available on the door or in advance from Jenny Abbott on 01737 843662.

St John’s Church is grateful to WICKES and WYEVALE GARDEN CENTRE for their help in providing gardening equipment recently.

Holmwood WI LIVELY discussions were the theme of Holmwood WI’s May meeting. Firstly there was our centenary Resolution “Failing to Care – Assessment of need in long-term care”. Member’s opinions and personal experiences dominated the afternoon before we voted. Then our secretary Maureen Lewington had set a quiz to get the brain working, before we all enjoyed our usual splendid tea. Valerie Homewood, Lyne Ford and Pat Lawless came out winners. John Lawrence will be joining us in June for his talk about PreColumbian Civilisations of America, before we all visit Iris and Eric Edser’s picturesque garden in July for our annual garden party – always an event to look forward to. Fingers crossed for sunshine. Osteopathy is Dee Dixon’s topic in August and there’s the usual fun time at our fish and chip lunch in September. Members will also be taking part in croquet, outings, barn dances, pub lunches and skittles during the summer months. Join us if you are free on the first Wednesday afternoon each month. Our secretary, Maureen Lewington, on 01306 882057 maureen.lewington@btinternet.com has all the information. We look forward to meeting you. 14

Computer Scams Some months ago I reminded readers about phone calls claiming to come from Microsoft Support Department or somebody working for them. The caller then asks for access to your computer to solve a problem but actually introduces one, which they then charge to remove. Microsoft never calls in this way. Recently I received two calls claiming to be from TalkTalk. The first caller claimed there was a problem with my router which she could fix and was obviously a fake. The second one was really convincing. The caller had my name and address and my account number. His supervisor then said that there was a problem that I was causing and that it was up to me to fix it. He was very polite but very insistent. Again he would have introduced a problem. TalkTalk admit that account numbers have been compromised. Jim Edwards

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL Following the success of last year’s Christmas Tree Festival, we are going to do it again. The dates for this year’s Festival will be Saturday and Sunday 12th and 13th December. The Church will be open for visitors from 2pm – 5pm and refreshments will be available too. In addition, we will be holding a Cheese and Wine event on Friday, 11th December, between 7.00pm and 9pm. ‘Beginners Please’ have kindly agreed to give a short Festive Entertainment between 8pm and 8.30pm. This evening will cost £5 and all proceeds will go to Church Funds. The Christmas Trees, decorated by you, will be on display in the Church. We’d like church and village clubs, families, groups or individuals to undertake to decorate a tree. Your tree will be both festive and representative of your club etc. It’d be lovely if you can make some tree decorations. Decorating will happen on Friday 11th December, following the service, but, as last year, there’ll be no mains-powered fairy lights as I’m scared of overloading the electrics. If you want to have a few battery-powered LED lights on your tree on the open afternoons, that’s fine. We’ll provide a 3ft artificial tree for you to decorate and also a flower pot. They will stand on boards placed on top of the pews alongside the walls of the church, up to 12 trees on each side. We’re going to ask the visitors to ‘vote’ for their favourite tree by putting some money into the appropriate pot. The three trees collecting the most money will be awarded special certificates. We are also going to have another knitted tree on display. We will again hold a ‘Guess the Number of Squares on the Knitted Tree’ competition. After Christmas the tree will be dismantled and the squares will be joined together to make blankets which can be sent abroad to people who need them. Our 2014 tree made 9 blankets to send to charity. Thanks to ‘Knit One, Purl One, Save One’ who sewed the squares together. We’d like as many of you as possible to make as many 8 inch squares as you can to be a part of this tree. The more squares we 22

can have the better our tree will look. Our 2015 tree will be black and white. You can use any knitting stitch that you like. If you are really clever you can use a cable stitch, but plain knitting or stocking stitch will do just as well. KNITTING INSTRUCTIONS (to make 8 inch squares) Double knitting Size 8 (4mm) needles 40 stitches Aran wool Size 6 (5mm) needles 36 stitches Chunky wool Size 4 (6mm) needles 28 stitches If you/your club/group would like to decorate a tree or if you would like further information please see me at the St John’s Christmas Tree Festival stall on Village Day, 26th September, or email Jackie on mole.end@virgin.net – THANK YOU

COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT web: mail:

www.cbp-northholmwood.info info@cbp-northholmwood.info

We are still finalising the details with the contractor, who hopes to start work at the beginning of October and take a period of 6 months. We expect to sign the contract soon. We are pressing ahead with getting the permissions needed for access across the National Trust common and the minor diversion of the public footpath as well as permission from Mole Valley District Council and the Diocese of Guildford for minor tree works. We have now satisfied the church authorities that we have the funding in place and they have extended the time limit for the completion of the work.

BRICKS Let’s get our Community Building built You can help by buying ‘BRICKS’. They cost £5.00 each and your chosen name will be put on the ‘wall’ at the back of the church and then placed in the Commemorative Book which will be kept in the new hall. Buy one for yourself, your friends, family, neighbours or in memory of a loved one. They make great presents. Please fill in the form attached and pass it to Ann in the church or phone 01306 885787. 30

Under their conductor Paul Newbold, they will play Debussy’s Printemps (Spring) and Stravinsky’s Firebird suite, plus Ravel’s Pavane and a Mozart flute concerto with soloist Marie Penny. This is the season for our choirs to hold their summer concerts. Dorking Choral Society has a programme entitled ‘Crossing the Atlantic’ with a wide selection of short choral pieces by the best of British and American composers. The music ranges from English madrigals, Parry, Stanford and Bob Chilcott, to Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber and some Gershwin favourites. Bring a picnic for after the concert! Dorking Camerata’s summer concert is entitled ’If music be the food of love …’, and it features several settings of Shakespeare’s words. There will be songs by Roger Quilter and Ivor Gurney, some Elizabethan music, further composers including Vaughan Williams, and a new work commissioned from Will Todd. Bring a picnic for the interval and be serenaded with lute music as you eat! Also, the choir of Beare Green & Newdigate presents ‘A Summer Soirée’, a 35

selection of music for summer directed by their conductor Jamie Cordell. Watermill Jazz meets at the Aviva social club (yes, the same place it used to be Friends Life!). This month’s performers are Amina Figarova’s New York Sextet (4th), the Asaf Sirkis Trio with Gareth Lockrane (11th), the Basil Hodge Quintet - Ten Pieces of Silver (18th), and the Antonio Forcione Quartet (25th). Dorking Halls has two opera screenings this month: first Puccini’s La bohème, a tragic tale of love set in Bohemian Paris, broadcast live from the Royal Opera House, and then a Ravel double bill from Glyndebourne. You can see both his short operas L’heure espagnole and L’enfant et les sortilèges in a recording from the 2012 Glyndebourne festival. Finally the band of the Royal Marines promise some exciting music and military spectacle. The band will be joined by choirs from the Dawnay school and St Teresa’s preparatory school, and the concert will raise money for seafarers in need.

‘Linking Hands with Europe’ at Dorking Museum The Dorking & District Town Twinning Association has mounted a new exhibition in association with Dorking Museum. ‘Linking Hands with Europe’ opened at the Museum at the end of May and will run until mid-September. This marks something of an exciting departure for the Museum’s programme of temporary exhibitions. A large backdrop of graphics and text incorporates background scenes of the three twin towns which merge to show the similar topography of the areas. QR codes are incorporated into the design so that visitors can use their mobile phones or tablets to learn more about the twinning from the German and French perspectives as well as Dorking’s own. They are linked to relevant websites, as well as to Caroline Salmon’s YouTube video. Dorking is twinned with Gouvieux in France and Güglingen in Germany with a mission to promote partnerships and relationships between the residents and businesses of the three towns. The idea of a possible ‘twin town’ in France was first raised in the early 1990s. Gouvieux was selected as being a similar distance from Paris as Dorking is from London, having similar characteristics, and, importantly, a similar network of clubs, societies and skills. An official inaugural meeting was held in the summer of 1997. Since then, strong links have been formed in sports, music, schools and work experience. These have been exciting and informative days and everyone involved has enjoyed the experience. Building on this success, links were established with the German town of Güglingen in Baden-Wurttemberg – again, a town with

39

similar topography, economy, environment and interests. The twinning arrangement here was established in 2007. The exhibition shows more about the life of these two twinned towns and the links and good friendships that have been developed in both directions. It provides an opportunity to understand these as real communities, not just names on the road signs at the entrance to Dorking.

Dorking Bereavement Group Every first, third and fifth Tuesday of the month, between 1pm and 3pm, people from Dorking and the surrounding areas are invited to drop in to The Living Room at Dorking United Reformed Church to meet other people in a similar situation, to chat and share experiences over tea and coffee. This non-religious group, which is free to attend, offers people ways to help cope following bereavement and the chance to meet people who understand what they are going through. The sessions are the result of a partnership between end of life care provider, St Catherine’s Hospice, and The Brigitte Trust, which provides emotional and practical help at home when lifethreatening illness is diagnosed. The sessions will be run by staff and volunteers, all of whom have been trained by the specialist staff at St Catherine’s and The Brigitte Trust. For further information please contact Annette Phillips at St Catherine’s Hospice on 01293 447343. Or simply drop in to the group.

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust Holmwood Common Newsletter June 2015 June is a great time on the Common. The greens are still fresh, everything is growing and summer is definitely here. Have you ever wondered what are the little caterpillars abseiling down from the trees in summer and getting into your hair and clothes? Our National Trust Ranger, ROB ADAM has some answers: These caterpillars which drop from oak trees by silk threads are likely to be Oak Leaf Roller Moth caterpillars which are harmless to humans but can cause significant leaf loss to oaks in the spring. The oaks will recover often producing a second flush of leaves later in the year. The caterpillar to look out for is the one from the Oak processionary moth, an unwelcome introduction from Europe. As the name suggests the larvae form distinctive nose-to-tail processions in oak trees in late Spring or early Summer and they are a health hazard because of the hairs which they shed. First spotted in London, they have slowly migrated with sightings as close as Kingston and Elmbridge district. The hairs can cause skin rashes and even sore throats, breathing and eye problems. If you happen to see the caterpillars, please report the sighting to Mole Valley. Horse Mounting Blocks I was pleased to see a horse rider using the mounting blocks on the edge of Inholms Lane car park: there is another set in Scamells car park as well. These two parking areas lead directly to the Circular Trail so are really good access points to the Common for riders.

Clandon House I imagine most people were shocked to hear about the devastating fire at Clandon Park House recently. The latest update I’ve seen (early May) said that a number of significant items have been saved and that structural engineers are on site assessing the damage. It’s too early to say what started the fire or what the future of the house will be but it’s a tragedy that we’ve lost one of the country’s finest examples of a Palladian mansion. NT Forthcoming events: 2 Night Time Safaris on Leith Hill, Friday 19th June and Friday, 26th June 2015 Booking essential – phone the Surrey Hills Estate Office on 01372 220644 FRIENDS WORKING DAY 11th APRIL This was a great success with Friends joining the regular NT volunteers, making 16 in all, for a day of footpath clearing. A long section of footpath just south of Mill Road was cleared and now looks terrific with more light getting through and easier access for walkers. Anyone keen to volunteer can contact David on 07768 318124 or via FOHC.info@gmail.com DORMOUSE DISCOVERY Whilst clearing undergrowth alongside one of the footpaths on Holmwood Common recently we were very excited to come across a hibernating dormouse - see our FOHC Facebook page for a lovely photograph. With great care he/she was carefully relocated to a safe place well away from the footpath. As this is the first sighting of a dormouse on Holmwood Common for many years we are talking with NT to see if we can find out more about these beautiful creatures and their presence on the Common. Perhaps there are ways we can encourage them by providing suitable habitat or even special boxes.

Dorking Choral Society Fresh from their success at the Leith Hill Musical Festival, Dorking Choral Society are putting together a delightful programme of ‘easy listening’ American and English songs for their summer concert. The concert, ‘Crossing the Atlantic’ a selection of some well-known, unusual and always attractive pieces, will be at St James’ Church Abinger on Saturday 13th June, 2015 at 7pm. In the hopefully balmy evening following, you are welcome to ‘bring your own picnic’ and join the choir in scoffing on the green - all are welcome. It is also the day of St James’ Church summer fair with stalls and sideshows and entertainment, so why not make a long afternoon of it for a really relaxing day. Watch out for the posters in town and around! St James’ Church is rich in history and has been described as the oldest village church in England. It suffered considerable damage from a flying bomb during WWII but was lovingly restored and again it was restored in the 60s following a lightning strike. The area goes back to Mesolithic times and is well worth a visit. Entrance to the concert is £12 and tickets are available from 01403 240093 or peterchrisbeckley@tiscali.co.uk 49

AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT April/May Ice Hockey is not a sport in which Great Britain excels very often but, following a dramatic 3 - 2 overtime win against Croatia in the opening game of the World 1B Championship in Eindhoven, they unfortunately had to settle for a silver medal when they lost to Lithuania by conceding a late penalty. In the first semi-final of the FA Cup, Reading forced Arsenal into extra time before losing 2 – 1. Reading played so well but the first error in the whole game by their goal keeper gave Arsenal their sought after win. In the other semi-final Aston Villa beat Liverpool two goals to one, which denied Liverpool’s skipper, Steven Gerrard, the chance to lift the famous trophy on what would have been his final game for the club and his 35th birthday. On Saturday, 26th April, champion jockey AP McCoy described the final day of his record breaking career as “the hardest day of my life” as he left Sandown to begin his retirement. The crowd wanted him to win in his last race but he only managed to come third. However after the race he was ushered back to the stands where he was cheered by 18,000 fans, a wonderful tribute. He was presented with the Champion Jockey’s trophy for the twentieth consecutive time; during his career he had delivered 4,357 wins. He said, “Someone will break my records. All records are broken. I just hope I’m dead when they do.” England’s cricket team sealed a crucial win over the West Indies in their second Test match following a draw in the first. They then lost the third Test by an embarrassing five wickets. Though England’s batsmen had collapsed to 123 runs all out it looked as if they still could win when the West Indies had only made 80 runs for 4 wickets. However their following batsmen made a fifth wicket stand of 108 runs, winning the match and ending the series in a draw. The England Cricket Board responded by sacking the coach, Peter Moores, and appointing ex-cricket captain, Andrew Strauss, as director of England cricket. His first job was to make a decision 50

regarding maverick Kevin Pieterson. Pieterson had scored 326 runs not out for Surrey against Leicestershire and considered he deserved a place in the England team. However Strauss has told him his playing days for England are over. The pleas for his return are monumental and England are not good enough to ignore players of Pieterson’s class. The debate will no doubt go on for some time. On Saturday, 9th May Jessica Evans made her long awaited return to the athletics’ track, after 21 months, at the Great City games in Manchester. She ran the 100 metre hurdles in 13.14 seconds, a long way short of her personal best of 12.54 seconds. Fans will be glad to see her back but she has a lot of work to do if she is to compete favourably with the likes of Katerina Johnson-Thompson. The watchable Badminton Horse Trials, considered the most prestigious equestrian event, concluded on Sunday, 10th May. William Fox-Pitt, riding Chilli Morning, was the eventual winner after riding without any faults in the influential final round.

FOUR OF A KIND Can you find a common English word of 8 letters which contains 4 Gs? Here is a clue… it’s a laughing matter. Answer at the bottom of the page.

DADDY? You know how sometimes we mishear things? A little boy that I know said that they had sung ‘Away in a Manger’ in the Nativity play at his preschool. He was convinced from singing this carol that Jesus had another name because he had heard it as ‘little George Jesus asleep in the hay’.

What do they call ministers in Germany? German Shepherds. Who was the greatest comedian in the Bible? Samson. He brought the house down.

In the same way a little girl said that she knew God’s name because every time people said the Lord’s Prayer she heard it as ‘Harold be thy name’. When Jesus gave us the prayer we call The Lord’s Prayer he told us what to call God – you can read about it in Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 6, verses 5-15.

Why does an elephant use his trunk as a bookmark? That way he always nose where he stopped reading.

The word that Jesus used for ‘Our Father’ was ‘Abba’ which is the way that children then spoke to their father, like we use the word Daddy now. Every time we say the prayer we remember that God is our loving father.

What do you call someone with an elephant on their head? Squashed!

Answer: giggling 54
