Dear friends, This year, starting June can mean only one thing – the World Cup! Countries around the world will be looking forward to (or dreading) Thursday 12th June when the first match kicks off, while many people will be looking forward to Monday 14th July when it will all have finished. So many people around the world will have hopes and fears about what might happen. Some hopes will be realised, while, of course, many will be dashed at the first hurdle, and, no doubt, some will experience success beyond their wildest imaginations. Watching fans of each country gives an idea of the country’s culture, although often in a stylised, over-the-top way, and, with those national identities also expressed in the wearing of football shirts and related colours, there is a real feeling of belonging – of being a community. And then, when you’re gathering ready for the match – whether in the stadium or even travelling there with fellow fans – you are all one. Each fan is part of a bigger whole, each one part of the same body – whether player, manager, supporter at the ground, or even watching at home. To mis-quote, “though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one team”. It seems to me that the togetherness we see in football tournaments (other sports are available) shows us how we are called to live our lives as Christians. We are called as Christians to be distinctively Christian in our lives – to state the blindingly obvious. How obvious is it to anyone who doesn’t know us that we are followers of Christ? OK, the dog collar is a give-away with me, but... Football fans at tournaments are proud to be following their team, proud to be part of the group. Do we give the same impression? 5

Football fans sing joyful songs about their team, both during the match but also outside it sometimes. We are called to praise God – but do we sing praises to God joyfully whenever we get the chance or just out of a sense of obligation? As Christians we have been baptised into one body; we are one body, as part of the church. Football fans express that in the way they relate to each other on these occasions. Do we believe that we are all equally important members of one body, or are we simply a collection of individuals who meet together regularly with our own concerns? From my own football experiences I realise that, at times, I have become so disillusioned that I was at the stage of not wanting to be identified with being a Reading fan, resenting singing songs at grounds and feeling separated from the other fans. As far as I could tell, no-one even noticed and it’s a pretty sorry and sad existence being there while wishing you were anywhere but! It will be interesting watching how the World Cup pans out – both on the pitch and off it. But, for me, it will be fascinating looking at what we can learn about belonging, caring and identifying with others in the church from what happens in Brazil. Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart

Summary of the PCC Meeting Tuesday 13th May FINANCE Lynn Jennings provided comprehensively detailed sheets which were distributed to the PCC. The current account had a deficit of £4000 but the church was still owed substantial funds from the Gift Aid scheme which would bring funds up to approximately £10000. The process to claim the money was underway and Lynn was hopeful that the money would be received soon. She did, however, express concern about the general state of the church’s funds. More money needed to be raised and appeals were going out in various forms to all parts of the parish. The price had not changed for some years for a memorial plaque. A new supplier had been found and the price had considerably increased. The suggested price for a memorial plaque was £75. COMMUNITY BUILDING Graham Phillips advised everything was progressing well in the due process of starting the new build. Plans had gone through the Council’s Building Regulations department and the certificate was awaited. Bundles were to be produced for tender and the diocese’s paperwork is in hand. The timescale was to have all papers ready by 28th May in readiness for a meeting on 2nd June. If all went well the forms could be signed off by Stuart Tanswell and Jim Edwards and then the plans could go out to tender next month, with a proposed start in July. One query was raised about how lavatory facilities would be provided in the interim and research of various options was being undertaken. WORSHIP Stuart Tanswell introduced this important topic by offering a background to the church’s worship generally. Valuable work is being done with the children at the back of the church by Kate Neilly. 8

Society’s working patterns have changed and so with families contending with employment shift duties, longer working hours and sports facilities being available on Sundays in conjunction with little about Christianity generally being taught in schools, communities have become fragmented and attending church becomes difficult. In comparison, everyone at St John’s School knows who the vicar is and, therefore, a way is needed to be found to continue that relationship in church. Stuart suggested that the PCC thought about events that might attract the various communities within the parish – meals, music and plays - especially when the new Community Building was operational a sound base for events would then exist. General discussion followed on where we were as a congregation. It was felt that very largely the church community was cohesive and loving, making the church a very friendly place. Tensions were recognised as the make-up of the congregation had changed and included more children, which resulted in more noise. It was felt that the children should be encouraged to be silent in certain parts of the service. There would be no quick solution to inter-generational issues but with a willingness to be flexible by all, communication can be maintained and progress made by learning and growing together. Jackie Rance offered to create a youth drama group. The way forward would be reviewed. Dates of next meetings: 8th July, 16th September, 11th November

LENT LUNCHES On 11th April it was St John’s turn to host Lent Lunches, organised by Churches Together in Dorking. With the support of Elizabeth Dobson and her supply of Gift Aid envelopes and bright posters, we welcomed everyone to partake of a simple lunch in our Parish Room and raise funds for Christian Aid. Would people from other Dorking churches travel out to North Holmwood? Would the Parish Room be presentable enough? Would our own congregation support the event? All these questions were raised and considered. One aspect was clear. The continued support of the loyal helpers was guaranteed without question. Everyone rallied round. Margaret gave the kitchen a once over. Iris and Eric collected all the extra dishes and cutlery from the village hall (and then took them back again). Eric worked tirelessly setting up the tables and chairs while Iris brought condiments and floral decorations. Lots of delicious soup was provided by Iris and Janet, who along with Sue were kept busy serving and clearing. I’m not really sure how many people we served but this time for the first time we sold out of everything – soup, rolls and cheese! In that busy hour and a half we raised over £190. The grand total from all the churches in the Dorking area was over £1,000 so our contribution was quite significant. It was lovely to see and talk to so many people that lunchtime and we were very pleased that you all came. Thank you for your support and your generosity. I’m sure the team will want to do it all again next year and look forward to the possibility of a smart new venue………………….

BEGINNERS PLEASE Our Drama year 2013/4 is now over. ‘Beginners Please’ has had a relatively quiet time as we chose not to have a production this season. Following the great success of ‘Pantomania’ in December 2012 we decided to have some more play readings instead. Musical Theatre was the chosen subject for this year. Among others we read ‘The Boyfriend’, ‘Salad Days’ and ‘Guys and Dolls’, which proved to be a particular favourite. The last musical we studied was ‘West Side Story’ which we followed up by looking at ‘Romeo and Juliet’. It was particularly interesting to look at these two plays concurrently because, as many of you will know, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was the inspiration for ‘West Side Story’ and the great themes present in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ still resonate down the centuries and into our own time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jill Spence for her generous hospitality to BP over the winter months. It was luxury indeed to have our meetings in cosy surroundings and to be plied with cake; thank you Jill. In September we are going to start work on our next venture; ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens, but with a twist. As most of the members of ‘Beginners Please’ are women I thought that it would be interesting to produce an all-female version of the story…well not entirely all-female…some of our incidental characters will be played by men (at least this is the current plan). Many of you will know that, for me, drama is nothing if not organic; so nothing is set in stone and I daresay there will be changes made before we come to performance. We are planning to have two performances; the first will be on a Saturday afternoon followed by an evening performance the next Friday. We are looking towards performance dates in early December. Please make a pencil note in your diary as we’d like to play to packed houses. As soon as we know when the performance dates will be we’ll publish them in The Spire. If any of you, of any age or gender, would like to take part in ‘A Christmas Carol’ please let me know. All new members would be very welcome. If enough younger members sign up I would consider starting a new youth wing of ‘Beginners Please’. Thank you all for your support.

This is the time of year when many of our local choral societies present their summer concerts and keep their fingers crossed for good weather! But first a roundup of the month’s other concerts: A special organ recital will be given at St Martin’s church by Martin Ellis to mark the 150th anniversary of the Royal College of Organists. This forms part of a series of celebratory organ recitals being given across the country. It is also Martin’s final organ recital in Dorking before his retirement; a grand ‘Farewell’ concert will follow next month. The Dorking Philharmonia’s concert will include Mozart’s ‘Paris’ symphony, Tchaikovsky’s lovely Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra, Elgar’s Elegy and Beethoven’s fourth symphony. There are also three live opera screenings at the Dorking Halls: Richard Strauss’ bitter-sweet Viennese comedy Der Rosenkavalier from Glyndebourne, Berlioz’ Benvenuto Cellini from the English National Opera at the London Coliseum and Puccini’s Manon Lescaut from the Royal Opera House. 26

Watermill Jazz continues to meet as usual every Thursday evening. This month’s performers are: the Jay Phelps quintet with Denys Baptiste (5th), the Julian Siegel quartet (12th), Guillermo Rozenthuler and Rioplatenses (19th), and the Dave Newton trio (26th). Now for all those choir concerts! The Ladybirds Choir, directed by Helena Twentyman, will celebrate the music of Walt Disney, mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I and also celebrate Abba winning the Eurovision Song Contest 40 years ago! Bookham choral society has a ‘come and sing’ afternoon, with music by Fauré, Lauridsen, Whitacre, Rodgers & Hart and Gershwin, followed by a concert performance. Brockham choral society has a pageant based on the story of St George and the Dragon, as well as Karl Jenkins The Armed Man. Dorking Camerata’s summer concert is entitled ‘A Fancy of Folk Songs’ - and you are invited to bring a picnic! Epsom choral society presents Aesop’s Fables by Bob Chilcott, plus music by Britten and Bernstein. Mickleham choral society’s summer concert is on the theme of Broadway. Buckland & Betchworth choral society will sing Duruflé’s lovely Requiem. Finally, Beare Green & Newdigate choral society’s concert will include Love’s Philosophy by Alexander L’Estrange.

HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk VPA Summer Show - 70th Anniversary Year! Saturday 2nd August 2014, 1-4pm Old School Field, South Holmwood The lovely Mary Scutt came and took tea with me a short while ago and brought with her details about the history of the Holmwood VPA, having been a committee member from 1984 until 2007, including 10 years as Chair between 1992 and 2002. The VPA was formed in 1942, in response to the national wartime drive to ‘Dig for Victory’, with the first summer show taking place three years later on 28th July 1945. The founding President was Mr Whatney, of Brookwood Corner in Moorhurst Lane, and the first Summer Show, or Flower Show as it was initially known, was held in a marquee in his garden. Exhibits of fruit, vegetables and flowers were displayed, as people showed off the best of their home grown produce. It was obviously a very serious business, with Mr Whatney paying out £25 for the hire of the first marquee, which Google informs me would be about £750 now. As the annual Flower Show became established, it soon outgrew its original venue. The Show moved first to the garden of Oakdale (still at that time a Children’s home), before moving to the Cricket Pitch alongside the A24 (sadly no toilets) and finally, in 1986, to its current venue on the field behind the Old School House in South Holmwood. Over the years, the VPA calendar has constantly evolved, with different annual events coming and going. While Mary was on the committee, the first event of the year was a January Coffee Morning in the Village Hall, where members could come along and pay their subscriptions. It also provided the opportunity for people to collect the seeds they had ordered; a tie-up with Suttons Seeds enabled members to order seeds for next season through the VPA. This was followed by the AGM in March and a Plant Sale in May. The Summer Show would be next, always on the third Saturday in July, followed by the Autumn Show in September or October and 28

lastly the Autumn Evening (which was held in a hastily erected Scout tent one year, when the committee forgot to book the Village Hall). In addition, there was always one, or sometimes two, outings arranged each year to places of interest – National Trust properties such as Nymans and Chartwell; other famous gardens such as Kew and Wisley; and memorably Exbury to see the camellias and magnolias. A hired coach would make its way along the A24, picking people up at the various stops and whisk them off for the day’s frivolities. In 1994 the VPA celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Summer Show. The magnitude of the event was marked with gold, handembossed detailing on the cover of the Show schedule and as well as the usual Grand Marquee for the flower and vegetable exhibits, a second marquee was erected to display old photographs of Holmwood, donated for the day by local villagers. Each summer since 1945 the people of Holmwood have tackled the important task of baking light fruit cakes, pickling onions and digging up collections of three identical carrots to display on doilies in a big tent, whilst elsewhere in the world Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, the Beatles had their first number one, JFK was assassinated, colour television was introduced, Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, Clive Sinclair built the C5 and the world wide web took over our lives. So let us hold our spades and whisks proudly aloft, and on Saturday 2nd August 2014, let nothing distract us from the serious business of enjoying the finest Summer Show since records began! Holmwood WI Two light-hearted quizzes lightened the mood at our May Resolution meeting. As usual Vic Mansell, husband of ex-president Gill, got our brains buzzing as we tried to recollect long-forgotten facts. It was great to see so many winners who went away with some chocolate to ease the brain-strain. It’s not long now before we enjoy a trip to Blenheim Palace; more than 30 will be entertained on this day out. Also planned are a July Garden Party, more pub lunches and an August Skittles date!! Our traditional WI tea always brings our meetings to a lovely conclusion – there’s plenty to eat and drink as we catch up with friends and events. Don’t forget we also get together each month for craft and Scrabble. Join us please; we’d love to see you. Maureen Lewington on maureen.lewington@btinternet.com or 01306 882057 is always on hand with a welcoming hello. Get in touch, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.

Guildford Diocesan Library - digital re-boot On Thursday 5th June this year why not come along to the re-launch of our diocesan library and enjoy a glass of wine whilst you pick up your new membership card. Evensong begins at 5.30pm and following this until 8pm the library is open to visitors. The entire 4,000 volumes in the library have been electronically catalogued thanks to the efforts of two volunteers from the Cathedral congregation. Now you can search the catalogue from your home computer and check the availability of a book before you travel in to the library. Go to www.cofeguildford.org.uk/go/res and follow the ‘Online Catalogue’ link. This hidden gem is housed in Guildford Cathedral and open whenever the Cathedral is - it is a free resource for all parishioners in the diocese. For many years it has been a place for study and reflection where generations of students, studying on the Local Ministry Programme, have rushed to complete assignments under a looming deadline! But whether you are training for ministry or just want to browse, explore and increase your knowledge, come in to enjoy the free WiFi connection and a peaceful study space. The library membership card also provides access to the Diocesan Resource Centre, the companion collection to the library, housed in the Education Centre on Stag Hill. It is there to resource parish ministry and worship for children, young people and adults; and to help schools enhance their RE and collective worship. It also houses a growing collection of Discipleship and Christian nurture courses. Membership cards can be obtained from the Resource Centre during office hours, if you can’t visit the launch evening.

ST JOHN’S C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL With the start of the summer term we have had two lovely school trips. Year 2 class went to Brooklands Transport Museum in Weybridge. The children had a very exciting day looking at all different forms of transportation, old red buses, vintage cars and they even got to sit on Concorde! Our Year 1 children visited Aldhurst Farm in Capel and saw how the cows are milked. They also met some new baby calves and also, with the help of the local vet, saw ultrasound images of baby calves in their mother's tummy. All a great learning experience for the children who are watching eggs hatch and caterpillars in their classrooms! These exciting extra-curricular activities are wonderful ways we are developing children's learning at St John's and a far cry from my school days! As I write our year 6 children are taking their SAT's tests, so our school is especially quiet to enable them to have the best atmosphere for concentrating. We hope they all achieve their full potential and we look forward to sending them off to secondary school properly prepared in September. There are lots more activities and events planned as the school moves towards the end of the academic year. If you would like to be part of the team at St John's, we always welcome volunteers. If you have a special talent you would like to share, you could come and speak to a class about it. In the past we have welcomed War Veterans, Opticians and Dentists! Jenni Crook

Loud and Proud Community Choir The choir launched in April 2009 and has been going from strength to strength. People of all ages are really enjoying singing all sorts of different songs! Come along any Wednesday during school term. We meet at St John’s School, Goodwyns Road from 7.30pm to 9pm. It’s free, fun and friendly!

Guildford Diocesan Summer School 2014 PEACE BY PIECE – BUILDING A BETTER WORLD July 7-24 Back by popular request, this year’s summer school will run over a three-week period from 7-24 July and is open to all adults. Single or multiple sessions (daytime and evenings) can be booked by downloading the form from www.cofeguildford.org.uk/go/ss where a full programme is also visible and downloadable. Printed copies may also be found at your church or on request (see contact details below). Our theme, in this commemorative year for WW1, will challenge us to think about peace – what is possible, what is our part, and how can we join with others to bring it about? Our volunteer tutors are clergy and lay people from the diocese, together with a few outside speakers, each passionate about their topics and looking forward to sharing with adult Christian learners – who tell us every year how much they value the chance to discuss matters of faith and spiritual practice with others. Highlights this year include: a ‘big sing’ with Geraldine Latty; a privileged glimpse into the Methodist Modern Art collection; an experience of ‘forest church’ in Willow Grange garden and a visit from The Forgiveness Project. There are also sessions on Bible study, theology, spirituality, liturgy, inter-faith dialogue, prison visits, war and conflict, reconciliation and inner peace. This will be a challenging programme and you are invited to listen and respond to views you may not have considered or agree with. Do have a look at the full programme at www.cofeguildford.org.uk/go/ss , book up by the end of June and come along - on your own or with friends. We look forward to seeing you in July! Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust June 2014 News from the Common Ranger’s Report April saw our now annual Easter Egg Trail event take place on the Common near St John’s Church. Aided, as always, by some stalwart Holmwood volunteers we were joined by Ranger Ruby from Leith Hill who painted numerous young faces, plus a couple of Friends' committee members and a Cadbury’s Eggspert complete with purple jacket and pith helmet. Numbers were about 10% up on 2013 with just under two hundred children plus adults walking the trail and answering questions in order to win an egg. A special thanks to the members of the church who manned their regular tea and cake stall to make the experience even more enjoyable for all. If you’ve been around the Common recently, you will have seen some of the new way-marking posts in place. I hope they will be understandable as that was one of the criticisms about the old ones. It has been a surprisingly difficult part of the Circular Trail project with numerous site visits to decide what to put on them - heights, alignment and colours to name just three of the considerations. They won’t all be in place until the Trail is completely laid in case there are any last minute changes, but the whole project is still on course for a mid-year finish. Rob Adam, Ranger, Holmwood Common. Friends’ Midsummer Picnic By popular demand we have reverted to an evening event this year and so we hope that you, your family and friends will all head over to the Viewpoint to join our annual Midsummer Picnic on Sunday 22nd June. Enjoy a glass of wine or a soft drink; 'bring-and-share' some tasty goodies and watch the sun set over Redlands. Details of the event can be found below and, for the more energetic, we are also organising a stroll around the Circular Trail in order to work up an appetite … or thirst! 43

Newsletter Published Members of the Friends should, by now, have seen the Spring edition of the Friends' newsletter. There are articles about bird-ringing, a report from the recent AGM with information from the NT that will be of interest to those living on the Common and an entertaining article about geo-caching. Holmwood Common Photography Class at the VPA Summer Show Once again the Friends are sponsoring one of the photography classes in the VPA Summer Show on Saturday 2nd August. For 2014 the subject is “Holmwood Common: People”. There’s still plenty of time for you to capture that winning picture and perhaps it would make a great project as you enjoy a family outing to explore the Circular Trail? We look forward to publishing the winning entries in the Friends’ newsletter. Contact us ... If you have any questions about the National Trust’s work on Holmwood Common then please get in touch with Rob Adam, NT Ranger for Holmwood Common: phone 01306 712711; mobile 07901 511359; or email to rob.adam@nationaltrust.org.uk . The Friends of Holmwood Common can be contacted via FOHC.info@gmail.com or by calling 07768 318124. Suspicious activity on the Common, such as suspected poaching, should be reported to the Surrey Police by dialling 101 without delay. Forthcoming Events Sunday 22nd June – Friends' Midsummer Picnic A friends and families get-together with a bring-and-share picnic. Weather permitting you will enjoy good food and perhaps even a glass or two of wine as we watch the midsummer sunset over Redlands. Meet at 6:30pm at Mill Road car park. Picnic baskets and chairs will be transported to the Viewpoint where we will be welcoming you with a glass of suitably chilled wine. Children and well-behaved dogs are very welcome. HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk Taxi Day – Tuesday 17th June 2014 As is customary, the VPA will be making up posies to present to the veterans on their afternoon stop at the Village Hall in South Holmwood. Please bring any donations of flowers or greenery, big or small, to the village hall at around midday. We would also appreciate any help making up the posies, so come along (with a pair of scissors, secateurs, gloves, string, bucket, and kitchen sink tucked under your arm) at midday. With plenty of people and a following wind (and a cheery song for Lorraine to keep singing at us at the top of her voice) we can crack them all off in about an hour! Ros Treliving 45

Our continuing theme this term is ‘Living and growing’. This has been promoted by lots of activities like drawing and painting flowers, tree and leaves. The children have planted some seeds in the outdoors pots and are watching to see them grow. The tadpoles are growing fatter but no legs yet. Later on in the term the topic will be ‘Babies’ and the children will be watching a new baby being bathed and changed. In July the children are having a summer outing to the miniature railway at Leatherhead. We continue to collect the Sainsbury’s Vouchers for active kids, thank you for all you have collected so far. If you are interested in our Pre-School please feel free to call in and see us at the Village Hall. We take 2 years old children with FEET funding depending on whether they meet the criteria. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 9.15am to 12.15pm. If you would like an information pack or to arrange a visit, please contact the Pre-School leader, Julia Woollard, on 07931 212006. AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT April / May There have been some local sporting achievements which I am pleased to mention at the start of this article. Dorking Rugby Football Club achieved a league and cup double. They came top of their league and have been promoted to the National Two Southern League for next season and followed that by beating Esher 22 points to 8 in the Surrey Cup Final. Leatherhead football team (The Tanners) won the Ryman League Division One South play-off final beating Folkestone Invicta three goals to one on penalties after extra time had been played. This means they will be promoted to the Ryman Premier Division. Twenty year old Emilia Gorecka from Bookham, who moved up from the junior athletic ranks this year, took almost half a minute off her personal best time finishing fifth in the 5000 metres in California with a time of 15 mins 7 secs. Paula Radcliffe, women’s marathon record holder, described her performance as a ‘big breakthrough’. Saracens Rugby Football club played what was one of the greatest English club performances when they defeated French Club Clermont Auvergne 46 points to 6 to earn a place in the final of the Heineken cup. Amir Khan had his Welterweight boxing debut against Luis Collazo on the same night as the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather fought Marcus Maidana for the WBA and WBC welterweight titles. Khan knocked Collazo three times and finished with an overwhelming points win. Mayweather’s courage and cleverness enabled him to keep the unbeaten record he cherishes so much though Maidana hit him 221 times - the most he has had to endure. Floyd Mayweather is trying to buy the Basket Ball team Los Angeles Clippers for $1.8billion dollars. The present owner was caught on tape telling his mistress not to fraternise with black people and has been banned from Basket Ball for life. 49

Champion jockey Kieron Fallon rode 40-1 outsider Night of Thunder to a shock victory in the 2000 Guineas beating 6-4 favourite Kingman by half a length. It was a first classic win for trainer Richard Hannon who took over from his father at the start of the year. Real Madrid humiliated Bayern Munich by four goals to nil, to give them a place in the Champions League Final. On the following night Atletico Madrid set up a great final with an excellent three goals to one over Chelsea. It hardly seems believable that the two teams in the European Champions League Final are from the same City. The football season has come to an end and after quite a challenge from Liverpool, Manchester City won the Premier League Championship trophy. Arsenal managed to fend off the push from Everton to hold on to fourth place which means they qualify to play in in the European Champions League next season. After losing two early goals to Hull City in the FA Cup Final on Saturday 17th May Arsenal managed to win three goals to two in extra time ending their 9 year spell without a trophy. Spare a thought for those three teams who are to be relegated: Norwich, Fulham and Cardiff. British driver, Lewis Hamilton, won the Spanish Grand Prix for Mercedes, his fourth consecutive victory. He has replaced team mate Nico Rosberg in top place of the driver’s championship table. Though Mark Cavendish won three stages out of four on cycling’s Tour of Turkey, he could not claim the overall lead. He said he was incredibly satisfied. Dutch Cyclist, Marianne Vos, won the women’s inaugural Tour Of Britain and said that women’s cycling was popular in Britain because it had grown side by side with the men’s. Household names such as Victoria Pendleton and Sir Bradley Wiggins came to prominence at the same time because of the Olympics. This has not happened in other sports so the women’s games are never viewed as equal.

THE FIRST All the answers to this Bible quiz are the first: either the first thing in a list or the first person to do or be something. 1. The first man (Genesis, chapter 2). 2. The city where Jesus’ followers were first called Christians (Acts, chapter 11). 3. The first bird Noah sent out of the ark (Genesis, chapter 8). 4. The first woman (Genesis, chapter 3). 5. The first person to see Jesus on the first Easter Sunday (John, chapter 20). 6. What happened on the first day of creation (Genesis, chapter 1) 7. Israel’s first king (I Samuel, chapter 10) 8. The first of the four Gospels (New Testament)

St ALBAN St Alban, whose special day is 22nd June, was the first English martyr, the first English person to be killed for the Christian faith. He lived in Verulanium which was an important Roman settlement in Hertfordshire. At the time the Romans were persecuting followers of Jesus and Alban was brave enough to shelter a travelling Christian priest. Exchanging clothes with the priest so that he could escape, Alban was arrested. When asked to prove his loyalty to Rome and the Emperor by making offerings to the Roman gods, Alban declared his faith in ‘the true and living God who created all things’. He was condemned to death and had his head cut off.

What is a forum ? Two-um plus two-um ! Why didn't the two 4s feel like dinner? Because they already 8.

All this happened a long time ago but St Alban is remembered today in the name of the place where he lived and died: Verulanium was renamed the city of St Albans.
