Dear friends, So much has happened in the Church’s year: preparing for Jesus’ birth through Advent, before celebrating it at Christmas; journeying through Lent while approaching Jesus’ passion and death, before celebrating his Resurrection at Easter; celebrating Jesus’ Ascension into heaven, and then the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. But now we are in this long period commonly called “ordinary time”, where the Church of England numbers the Sundays “After Trinity”. Sometimes it feels a bit of a let-down, after all the excitement and meaning of the year so far, to have this long time labelled simply “ordinary”. If we think of our lives, we have a similar cycle. There are joyful events we anticipate, look forward to and prepare for, all before we eventually get to experience them. On a monthly basis, maybe something like payday might be one such thing. But between them we have periods of fairly normal life with nothing particularly exceptional happening. Except that during those unexceptional times, there are things happening. Our lives are not static but rather we have new experiences, we learn and we grow as humans. I am the same person as a year ago but my experiences of the year have influenced me and helped me grow as a person. The same is probably true for each of us. So it is with the church’s year. It is no surprise that the colour of vestments for “ordinary” time is green – the colour of growth. Through this season we are invited to experience God and get to know him better, not through the joyful experiences of major festivals but in everyday life, in those little spurts of growth. We tend to enjoy especially the big Christian feasts and experience God’s presence in our lives on those occasions. But God is with us always, wherever we are and whatever we are doing. On extraordinary occasions we are aware of it and notice His presence in our lives. But on those ordinary, run-of-the-mill occasions, we don’t always notice that God is still with us, loving us and helping us to grow into the people He wants us to be. Wishing you every blessing in this “ordinary” but growth-filled time,

Scout award to Derek Ludlow On the 23rd April Derek was awarded the Silver Wolf in the St George’s Day Honours list. The Silver Wolf is the highest award made by the Scout Association “for the services of the most exceptional character”. It is an unrestricted gift of the Chief Scout. The award consists of a Silver Wolf suspended from a green and yellow neck ribbon. Derek started his Scouting life as a Wolf Cub then, after a spell in a Sea Scout pack, he joined a Scout Group and eventually became a Rover Scout. From the age of 20 he served as assistant Scout Leader until in November 1962 he joined the 18th Dorking (North Holmwood) Scout Group progressing from Scout Leader to Group Scout Leader. In 1967 Derek was selected to occupy the position of Assistant District Commissioner (Leader Training) which meant he was responsible for training Scout Leaders in the County of Surrey. He left that position in 1974 to become a much respected District Commissioner of Dorking where he stayed until his compulsory retirement. However, he wasn’t finished with Scouting because he joined the District Scout Fellowship, eventually becoming its chairman. During this time he was presented with his 60 year service award. Sadly Derek passed away on the 10th June and he will be missed by all those who served with him. He was an exceptional man.

A memorial service will take place at St John’s Church at 2.30pm on Monday 28th July, followed by a reception at North Holmwood Sports Club.

So, what is exactly IS a rural or area dean? If a Church of England diocese is a business and its bishop is the managing director, an archdeacon is the head of a division and a rural dean manages a department: not quite an accurate description but not a bad comparison. When the call centre cannot answer your problem and you ask to speak to a manager, the next voice you hear is probably the equivalent of the rural dean. Another way to look at it is to see the rural dean, often known as the area dean, as the senior vicar in a large group of churches and parishes. Such a group, maybe a couple of dozen parishes, is a deanery. The rural or area dean chairs all the clergy of the area when they come together with lay people elected by each parish in a council called the deanery synod. Synods are the Church’s equivalent of Parliament (General Synod), County Councils (Diocesan Synod) and local councils (Deanery Synod), where both spiritual and administrative matters can be discussed democratically and planning and policy shaped. Rural dean is, in fact, an ancient office with certain specified responsibilities: the incongruity of a priest in the middle of a city being called a rural dean led to many now being called area deans. In many instances, the duties of rural dean are discharged by a vicar as a temporary addition to his or her responsibilities, in return for a small honorarium. Rather than seeing the rural dean as the line manager for other vicars, therefore, the relationship is nearer to that of the Archbishop of Canterbury with other bishops: not the boss but first among equals. As an officer of the bishop the rural dean’s key roles include looking after parishes that are between vicars, ensuring everything keeps going and helping in the process of finding a new vicar; chairing meetings of all the clergy within the deanery; co-chairing, with an elected layperson, meetings of the deanery synod; and carrying out visitations and inspections on behalf of the archdeacon to ensure the good order of the fabric and the general welfare of parishes. 12

It’s not all about admin, however. Being the priest of a parish is not always as quiet and calm as you might think. Clergy can be affected by pressure just like anyone else and rural deans are expected to care for the clergy of their deanery as well as for the parishes. They listen to vicar’s problems, as well as those of parishioners, and help in whatever way they can. And then they make sure that communication between the parishes and the bishop is working. They pass on messages from the bishop and send back responses, as well as making sure that the bishop hears of any problems in the parishes. So, you might see rural and area deans as a cross between council chair, line manager and agony aunt. Parish Pump

FUNDS The total available for the Community Building Appeal now stands at just over £300,000 Our rough estimate of the total cost of the building is £300,000. This means that we have at last reached our initial target figure but are still raising funds for equipment. We have received building regulation approval from Mole Valley District Council and approval from the Diocesan Advisory Committee. We need formal approval from the Chancellor of the Diocese and to appoint a builder. We should be able to start work in July or August.

The effect of digital life – on our faith A study from the Barna Group says that Americans spend more time in front of a screen than ever. The study suggests a trend is emerging. Digital life connects - and disconnects - adults in life and faith. In 2013, two images of Saint Peter's Square captured the world's attention. The first, taken in 2005, shows a crowd attending the funeral of Pope John Paul II. The second, taken in 2013 from an angle similar to the first photo, shows a crowd observing the election of Pope Francis - only this photo exhibits a particular glow. Nearly every person in the picture is holding up a digital screen to capture the event. More than one-third of adults (36%) stop whatever they're doing to check their device when they get a new text or message but only 21% of adults say they set aside time each day to connect with God. Martin has been Director of Music and Organist at St Martin’s for 28 years. As well as directing the choir for church services, he has organised the regular series of Thursday lunchtime concerts, attracting a wide variety of performers, and also given many organ recitals himself, notching up a most impressive total of 155 recitals! Truly an outstanding contribution to music in Dorking! Well done Martin, thank you, and may you and Miriam enjoy a long and happy retirement together! The concert will include a variety of choral and instrumental works by Bach, Handel, Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Vaughan Williams and others. Taking part will be several former members of the church choir and former organ scholars, together with other pupils and colleagues of Martin. The proceeds will go to a very worthy cause: the William Cole Church Music Trust which supports the organ and choral scholars at St Martin’s. I hope the church will be packed for this very special occasion!

A few more local choral societies hold their summer concerts this month. Holmbury St Mary choir, with a concert entitled Everyone Sang, will perform music illuminating the journey of the human soul, especially those whose lives have been affected by war. Bookham choir presents Summertime with a selection of relaxing and uplifting music, and Leatherhead choir’s concert is entitled Echoes of the Renaissance. The Dorking Halls will be screening a performance of Mozart’s dramatic opera Don Giovanni from Glyndebourne, and also a concert by André Rieu. The Dutch violinist and conductor, who has become a worldwide phenomenon, is celebrating the tenth anniversary of his Maastricht summer evening concerts. Held every year in the mediaeval Vrijthof square in Maastricht, the concert features Rieu and his famous Johann Strauss orchestra, plus soloists and it will end with spectacular fireworks. Watermill Jazz meets every Thursday evening at Friends Life. July sees the following line-up of performers: Enrico Tomasso quintet (3rd), Gareth Williams and Trish Clowes (10th), Alec Dankworth’s Spanish Accents (17th), Nikki Iles trio with Josh Arcoleo (24th), and Tony Kofi’s Organisation (31st).

In the evening, the VPA are proud to present a:

Free Family Film Night! Around the World in 80 Days, starring Steve Coogan, will be shown from around 8pm. It’s completely free to come along and there’ll be hotdogs, popcorn and drinks on sale. Bring a deckchair, blanket, sofa or whatever you like and enjoy the outdoor cinema experience. On Sunday, the annual VPA Dog Show starts at 1.30pm, so fluff up your pooch and head on up to the field. Rosettes all round! Finishing the weekend off, BSA will be hosting al fresco Songs of Praise on Sunday evening from 5pm. She always manages to rustle up a happy band of musicians to accompany the singing, so bring a seat, sit back and enjoy. Hints and tips This year is a big year for the Summer Show, so you don’t want to find yourself making an easily avoidable faux pas during your visit. Luckily the internet comes to the rescue: How to eat an ice cream When the sun shines and an ice cream is in order, make sure you find a safe place where you and your ice cream won't be prone to accidents, and use a tea-cup (not usually supplied by the ice cream seller, so don’t forget to bring your own) to catch any drips. How to throw at a coconut shy Ensure you perform an adequate warm up (Fig1.) When called forward, adopt a powerful “ready position” with your knees slightly bent, and make sure you end with a strong follow through.

Fig 1.

How to shake hands (when accepting an award) The perfect handshake exudes confidence, while a sub-par shake may leave your personality in doubt. Extend your right arm parallel to the ground, thumb pointing upwards. Give the receiving hand a firm yet gentle squeeze, simultaneously administering one downward shake that travels about 2cms. Let go of the receiver’s hand and try to refrain from wiping your hand on a trouser leg, towel, or other nearby accessory. Good luck, and see you there!

Summer term at Pre-School continues with the children making the most of any dry, warm days by playing with the equipment outside. They have explored the movement of water down the gutters and painting the walls. This term our topic has been “Living and Growing” and they have been looking at lifecycles – butterflies and frogs. They have planted flower and vegetables seeds in their outdoor pots; these have been growing well. The children have also been looking after their tomato plants. We continue to run afternoon sessions on a Wednesday and Friday for our older children. In preparation for starting ‘big school’ in September the teaching includes letter and number formations combined with creating artwork and observational drawings. It has been satisfying to see these children develop and grow in confidence ready for their next step along the educational ladder. Our fundraising ‘Fun Run’ will take place on Sunday 6th July, when the children will be sponsored to complete circuits of the church path and woodland area, followed by refreshments, tombola/raffle and facepainting back at the village hall. The proceeds from this day contribute to the pre-school outing to the Leatherhead miniature railway in midJuly. A big thank you to all for collecting the Sainsbury’s vouchers, which will be exchanged for new physical play equipment in July. As the Pre-School year draws to a close we say a goodbye to all our leavers and wish them good luck with their transition to ‘big school’ in September If you are interested in our Pre-School please feel free to call in and see us at the Village Hall. We take 2 years old children with FEET funding depending on whether they meet the criteria. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 9.15am to 12.15pm. If you would like an information pack or to arrange a visit, please contact the Pre-School leader, Julia Woollard, on 07931 212006. Dioceses vote in favour of women bishops The Church of England’s dioceses have now all voted in favour of the current draft legislation to enable women to be bishops. In 2011 both London and Chichester diocesan synods voted against the legislation. The February 2014 meeting of General Synod referred the current Women in the Episcopate legislation to the dioceses. Diocesan Synods all voted in favour of the motion: ‘That this Synod approve the proposals embodied in the draft Bishops and Priests (Consecration and Ordination of Women) Measure and draft Amending Canon No 33.’ For the motion to be carried the houses of clergy and laity had to each vote, by a simple majority, in favour. The draft legislation will now go before General Synod in July for a Final Approval vote. The Bishop of Rochester, James Langstaff, Chair of the Steering Committee for the Draft Legislation for Women in the Episcopate said: “The dioceses have now expressed their view very clearly and the matter now comes back to General Synod in July. I pray that the Synod will continue to approach this decision in a prayerful and generous way as we move towards voting on the proposal that women may be bishops in the Church of England.”

Replica of Bede’s Bible returns home to Jarrow after more than 1,000 years The only full-sized replica of the illustrated 7th century Codex Amiatinus, which was made by the Venerable Bede at Monkwearmouth-Jarrow Priory, has gone on display at Bede’s World. Written in the monastic scriptorium in the 7th Century, the Codex Amiatinus was one of three single volume Bibles made at Wearmouth-Jarrow. It was made by monks under the direction of Abbot Ceolfrith, who started the project in AD692. The oldest complete Latin Bible in existence, it was rare to make a single volume Bible. It is considered one of the most important copies of the Bible in the world, and one of the most important manuscripts made in the British Isles. The Codex Amiatinus weighs more than 34kg (75lbs) and each page is made from vellum which would have come from hundreds of calf hides. A dismal day didn’t put off members of Holmwood WI when they met for their June meeting at South Holmwood village hall. Rob Adam was a ray of sunshine as he spoke enthusiastically about the National Trust in the Holmwoods. How lucky we are to have so many local well managed and picturesque places to visit and walk around. Lyne Ford and Pat Christmas jointly won our monthly competition with pictures of bluebells on Holmwood Common, Box Hill and Leith Hill in bygone days. This month we will be visiting The Watermill in Dorking for our pub lunch, enjoying a coach trip to Blenheim Palace as well as coffee mornings and sales. There is always plenty to add to our diaries each month. We are hoping for better weather when we meet in North Holmwood for our July Garden Meeting. Once again Eric and Iris Edser are treating us to a lovely get together and barbecue in their garden. Each month new guests visit us and we always hope they will join our friendly WI. COME ALONG WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU. Contact our secretary, Maureen Lewington, on 01306 882057, 07780 675235 or email maureen.lewington@btinternet.com 41

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust July 2014

News from the Common Ranger’s Report I had the pleasure of talking to the Holmwood WI recently about the Common and how it is managed by the National Trust. At one point I mentioned nightingales, saying how brilliant it would be to see them return to the Common. Bookham Common is now noted for its nightingale population and as Holmwood is very similar it should, with appropriate habitat management, be possible to entice them back. We know that these birds like low, dense vegetation and so in some areas the scrub has already been laid by partially cutting stems then lying them as flat as possible to the ground. The partial cutting allows the stems to carrying on growing but at a much lower level than before, hopefully providing the dense growth required. Interestingly deer have been implicated in the decline of nightingale numbers as they like to browse this same low vegetation thus diminishing the essential habitat. The Saturday volunteers had another go in June at producing charcoal from material they had cut at the beginning of 2013. Although this isn’t a vital part of their duties, it does provide an insight into the way in which woodlands were managed for hundreds of years by coppicing. This is the practice of cutting down youngish trees to allow them to re-grow from the stem at ground level to produce new stems which are cut again after a number of years. The length of the growing period depended on what was required; for example, walking sticks or fencing materials or, in our case, wood suitable for producing charcoal. One of the side benefits of this system is the dense low growth suitable for birds such as warblers and, of course, nightingales. Rob Adam, Ranger, Holmwood Common.

Holmwood Common Photography Class at the VPA Summer Show Once again the Friends are sponsoring one of the photography classes in the VPA Summer Show on Saturday 2nd August. For 2014 the subject is “Holmwood Common: People”. There’s still time for you to capture that winning picture and perhaps it would make a great project as you enjoy a family outing to explore the Circular Trail? We look forward to publishing the winning entries in the Friends’ newsletter. Wildlife Events on Holmwood Common The Common has an excellent range of habitats: open heathland and rides; ponds; marsh areas; deciduous woodland. Look closely and you will find many different species of insects, birds, animals, plants and fungii. Two months ago Rob reported our record for the highest count, in Surrey, of White Admiral butterflies and a record start to this year's recording with early sightings of Brimstones, Peacocks and Commas. Our fungus walk last year identified fifty different species in just two hours. What have been your favourite wildlife sightings this year? We have arranged two wildlife events for the second half of 2014. The first, with full details below, is a Bat Walk. This is a dusk event where, armed with electronic bat detectors, you will venture out to see – or should we say “hear” - the different species of this tiny mammal. The second event, planned for Saturday 11th October (which happens to be National Fungus Day!) is our Fungus Foray. Make a note of this date as last year a number of people missed out when the event became fully booked. Contact us ... If you have any questions about the National Trust’s work on Holmwood Common then please get in touch with Rob Adam, NT Ranger for Holmwood Common: phone 01306 712711; mobile 07901 511359; or email to rob.adam@nationaltrust.org.uk . The Friends of Holmwood Common can be contacted via FOHC.info@gmail.com or by calling 07768 318124. 46

Suspicious activity on the Common, such as suspected poaching, should be reported to the Surrey Police by dialling 101 without delay. Forthcoming Events Wednesday 20th August – Bat Walk on Holmwood Common We have enlisted the help of the Surrey Bat Group to bring you an evening walk on the Common, armed with electronic bat detectors, so that you can “hear” the different species of bats. We will meet at 7:30pm for a 7:45 start; and the walk will last for a couple of hours. Further details when you book. For technical reasons involving the bat detectors, dogs cannot be allowed on this walk. The cost of the walk will be just £4 per person for adult members of the Friends and £8 for non-members. Children under 16, half-price. Numbers will be limited and so we recommend early booking by email to jthornton21@btinternet.com … please include a contact phone number. Payment will be required to confirm your booking. Sunday 31st August - Den Building Adventure … a National Trust event Adventures galore as the youngsters build their own secret dens on Holmwood Common. 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Cost: £10 per child ... suitable for ages 7 to 12 ... children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Booking essential ... call 01372 220644 to book or for further information. Other events are scheduled for various NT properties throughout the region. Visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/events for more information.

Renew your Membership or join the Friends today ... Membership of the Friends of Holmwood Common is open to everyone. Please send your annual subscription – just £5 per household (plus a donation, if you are feeling generous!) – to: Friends of Holmwood Common, c/o 10 The Orchard, North Holmwood, RH5 4JT. AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT May / June Alistair Cook has been chosen to build and captain a new England cricket side alongside coach Peter Moores. England got off to a winning start in their first match of the five one-day internationals against Sri Lanka beating them by 81 runs. In the second match, in Durham, England lost by 157 runs when they were bowled out for 99 runs; they were shoddy in the field and even worse with the bat. On 28th May England bounced back from that defeat to skittle Sri Lanka for 67 runs in 24 overs at Old Trafford, winning by 10 wickets. However, England failed to clinch their first series triumph under new management when Sri Lanka won the next two matches by seven runs and six wickets respectively but there is now a glimmer of hope that England’s performance could improve. Great Britain’s rowers won two gold, four silver and two bronze to top the medals table in the European Championships. The men’s four of Andrew Triggs Hodge, George Nash, Mohamed Sbihi and Alex Gregory led all the way to win their Gold medal and the women’s pair, Helen Glover and Polly Swann, won Gold by beating Romania. Golfer Rory McIlroy achieved a stunning victory in the BMW PGA golf championships at Wentworth. He had started the final round trailing overnight leader, Danish golfer Thomas Bjorn, by 7 shots then things went well for McIlroy on the final day and very badly for Bjorn. McIlroy’s putting was superb and it was uncanny the way the way the ball kept dropping in. Poor Bjorn showed us that all it takes to lose your place on the leader board is to make a complete hash of a couple of holes. The runner up was Irishman Shane Lowry. It was the first time in 25 years that Colin Montgomerie did not play at Wentworth. He was in America winning his first major title, the US Senior PGA Championship. He won by four holes from America’s Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson. The latest round of the World Triathlon series took place around Hyde Park. It is always very competitive and watchable with its three elements of swimming (in the Serpentine), cycling and running. 51

Unfortunately the Brownlee brothers did not reproduce their Olympics’ performance, when Alistair finished first and Jonny third. This time they finished fourth and fifth respectively. Spain’s Mario Molo won in an exciting sprint finish. It felt like the end of an era when both Venus and Serena Williams were knocked out of the French Open tennis tournament in the second round. Rafa Nadal simply outplayed and almost humiliated Andy Murray in the semi-final taking an hour to beat him in three straight sets. In the final, Nadal went on to beat Djokovic winning the French Open for the 5th consecutive time. Russian Maria Sharapova (27) had to use all her skills and fighting instincts to beat Romanian Simona Halep to lift the women’s title. Jonny Wilkinson played his last game of professional rugby in the UK when he captained Toulon to victory against the Saracens in the Heineken Cup game at the Millennium stadium in Cardiff. World Cup winner Wilkinson is now an icon in France as well as England. Northampton Rugby Football Club (the Saints) seized the Aviva Premiership trophy after an epic final against Saracens when they won 24 points to 20 after extra time. England had a perfect football World Cup send off when they beat Peru 3 - 0 on Friday, 30th May at Wembley. They might not have looked like World Cup winners but the crowd of 80,000 were unfailingly positive. They then went on to manage two draws against Ecuador and Honduras in their two warm up games in Miami before flying to Brazil. On Saturday 14th June they played three times World Cup winners Italy in their first group game. Having put so much into it, it was disappointing when they lost by two goals to one. It would be great to see England reach the quarter finals but this defeat made it a little more difficult. [Editor – and now we have learned more….]

The cricket season has been stop start with so much poor weather especially late on in the week. The two Saturday league sides have started evenly with as many wins as defeats, including some very decent performances with bat and ball. The Sunday side has struggled for numbers but have enjoyed the few games they’ve played. As always the cricket experience is and should always be about playing the game to win, within the spirit of the game and with a smile on your face. At North Holmwood I believe we excel at that and socialise as a team and with the opposition. Friendships made on the cricket pitch last a lifetime. We practice on Wednesday evenings from around 6pm unless there is a match on. Most weekends on both Saturday’s & Sunday’s a game is being played at Inholms Lane from 2pm. Check out the fixtures on our website http://www.northholmwood.com/cricket.html Come and have a look. New players are always welcome, please come along to the club on weekends or email Ian Elliott at wellie22@hotmail.co.uk for more information. The Club is available for hire for private parties. Please phone 01306 889764 or collect a booking form from the bar. If you are not a member then we will ask you to join our Club to enjoy our facilities. This still works out more cost effective than local venues.

T-TIME PUZZLE? All the answers to this Bible puzzle begin with the letter T – can you find them all? The first one is too easy.

St THOMAS

1. The disciple called Didymus.

Thomas was one of the 12 disciples and one thing we know about his family is he had a twin because he was called ‘Didymus’ which means a twin.

2. The personal name after the title Roman Emperor (John, chapter 6). 3. Roman to whom Luke addressed his Gospel.

Thomas was ready to die with Jesus (John 11:16) but it is as ‘Doubting Thomas’ that most people remember him. Thomas wasn’t afraid to ask the questions that the other disciples were thinking.

4. Where St Paul was born (Acts, chapter 9). 5. Paul’s companion on the journey to Jerusalem (Galatians, chapter 2). 6. She came from Joppa and was also known as Dorcas (Acts, chapter 8).

Thomas wasn’t with the other disciples when they first saw the risen Christ. He refused to believe that Jesus had returned from the dead ‘unless I see… and touch… I will not believe’, but when he saw and touched Jesus he exclaimed ‘My Lord and my God’. You can read this in St John’s Gospel, chapter 20.

7. Deborah sat underneath one (Judges, chapter 4). Are there any tiles that won’t stick on the wall? Reptiles. Tell a man that there are 400 billion stars and he'll believe you. Tell him a bench has wet paint and he has to touch it.

Without Thomas’ doubts perhaps we wouldn’t be as sure about our faith today. We need someone to ask the questions that we are too afraid to ask for fear of seeming silly or foolish.

Answers: 1 Thomas 2 Tiberius 3 Theophilus 4 Tarsus 5 Titus 6 Tabitha 7 Tree 58
