The Revd Leah Kearns As we were completing the preparation of this edition of The Spire we learned the sad news that Leah had died in hospital in Epsom on Friday, 23rd January, following a period of illness. Leah was a much valued friend to many in North Holmwood and was a marvellous support to the ministry in local churches, particularly St John’s. She will be greatly missed. A full appreciation will appear next month. Jim Edwards

Dear friends, Happy new year! It seems so long since my last magazine letter – but Advent and Christmas have been and gone, and Lent is nearly upon us. I write this during the “Week of Prayer for Christian Unity”. On the Sunday evening there was a well-supported Churches Together service at St Martin’s and all present enjoyed the opportunity to worship God and pray together. During the week, local clergy have also met several times to pray together – for the churches but also for the whole area. Around the country and probably further afield Christians of different traditions, different worship styles, different denominations, came together in worship and prayer. Celebrating that faith which joins us together and looking to that time when we are closer than we are now. Across Dorking we are blessed in having so many different churches and it is always a joy to come together, mindful of the things that separate us, but rejoicing in our shared faith and friendship. At this time, though, our attention is also drawn to how we relate to and live alongside those of different faiths – and those of no faith at 5

all. We have heard about all that has been happening in Paris between different religions, not to mention all that is happening in Nigeria with Boko Haram. People are being killed, essentially because they belong to one faith tradition rather than another. People are being killed in the name of God. People are being killed because they are different. Or, possibly, people are being killed because of the fear of those who are different. It is not acceptable, not right, and we should be active in opposing such things. In this country, too, there are often suspicions about those who are different. Sometimes even those who prefer a different style of worship in the same church, let alone anything bigger! We can sometimes be suspicious of those belonging to a different religion, or who come from another country, or who come from a different part of the same country, or who are from a different social background, or do manual work, or work in an office, or are young, or old, or male, or female, or married, or single, or gay, or straight, or support a different football team, or follow a different sport, or... Someone who is different, I suppose, makes us question who we are in relation to them. We don’t know quite what to expect, when they don’t do everything exactly as we do. Mind you, the altar servers always say they have no idea what I’m going to do from one week to the next... The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity reminds us to set our differences aside as we live and worship side-by-side, even if it is a struggle sometimes. It can also be a reminder to us about how we live life day-by-day alongside those who are different to us in any way – living with them, supporting them, enjoying being with them. Rejoicing in the fact that we’re not all the same! Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart 6

Rebecca Cannon Vitality Fund Rebecca Cannon passed away suddenly on the 31st July 2014 as a result of a bowel complication that was incredibly rare in a 22 year old. She lived in North Holmwood and had attended Redlands and Ashcombe schools, before gaining a Maths degree at Nottingham University. Rebecca was working in London and training to be an accountant. Rebecca will always be remembered affectionately as a loving and caring friend, daughter and sister, with a feisty personality and a passionate determination to change the world. The Rebecca Cannon Vitality Fund aims to provide a lasting legacy to that determination, raising money in her memory and offering a brighter future for the homeless and disadvantaged young people of Surrey. The fund will be held within the Community Foundation for Surrey, a registered charitable trust supporting people in need throughout Surrey by philanthropic giving. The fund will award grants to individuals and non-profit organisations that provide support to overcome homelessness and help disadvantaged young people gain confidence and raise aspirations.

Quiz Night Monday 9th March in aid of the Rebecca Cannon Vitality Fund On Monday 9th March there will be a quiz night in aid of the Rebecca Cannon Vitality Fund at Rialtos in Dorking. Tickets at ÂŁ10 each, to include a meal, will be on sale from 8th February, available from Jane Schofield or Suzanne Cannon. Teams of six, or individuals are very welcome. TENTH BISHOP OF GUILDFORD The inauguration of the Right Reverend Andrew Watson as the tenth Bishop of Guildford will take place at 11am on Saturday 28th February 2015 in Guildford Cathedral. Due to the expected demand to attend this service, it will be a ticketed occasion to ensure that representatives from the widest range of parishes and communities are able to attend. Bishop Andrew will also preach at both the 9.45am Eucharist and 6.30pm Evensong services in Guildford Cathedral the following day, Sunday 1st March, allowing those who are unable to attend previously to share in worship with the new bishop and to hear him preach during his inaugural weekend.

Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady, Walsingham Friday 22nd May - Sunday 24th May This year the Bishop of Dorking will be leading our annual pilgrimage to Walsingham, along with Stuart and the Revd Mark Heather (a great friend of St John’s). We will be leaving St John’s during the morning of Friday 22nd May and spending the weekend in the beautiful Norfolk countryside, at the Shrine at Walsingham. We will join fellow pilgrims from Thorpe church, and many others, for a weekend of fun, fellowship and worship, celebrating Pentecost together on the Sunday, before we leave to come home. The cost will be around £120 full board, with transport slightly extra. Many people have expressed an interest, and now I need to start getting definite numbers. Please let me know as soon as possible. If you have ever thought that maybe you would like to come, please speak to me, Steve Harris, Margaret Teale or Stuart for more information. First Woman Bishop in the Church of England The Rt Revd Libby Lane became the first woman to be consecrated as a bishop in the Church of England on Monday, 26th January. At a York Minster service presided over by the Most Revd Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, Libby became the 8th Bishop of Stockport, a suffragan (assistant) bishop in the Diocese of Chester. Speaking at Stockport Town Hall, when her appointment was first announced on 17th December, Libby Lane said: "I am grateful for, though somewhat daunted by, the confidence placed in me by the Diocese of Chester. This is unexpected and very exciting. I am very conscious of all those who have gone before me, women and men, who for decades have looked forward to this moment. But most of all I am thankful to God. “The Church of England is called to serve all the people of this country and, being present in every community, we communicate our faith best when our lives build up the lives of others, especially the most vulnerable. I am excited by the possibilities and challenges ahead.” Libby Lane was ordained priest in 1994 and served a number of roles in the North of England. She served her curacy in Blackburn Diocese and, in York Diocese, served as a hospital chaplain and as a chaplain in further education. Moving to the Diocese of Chester, Libby served as a team vicar in Stockport before becoming Vicar of St Peter's Hale and St Elizabeth's Ashley, in 2007. In 2013, Libby was elected by the North-West dioceses as one of the first eight clergy women to sit as Participant Observers in the House of Bishops of the Church of England. She also served as Family Life Officer in York and as Chester’s Assistant Diocesan Director of Ordinands, advising and supporting people thinking about ministry in the Church of England. January 2010 saw her take on the role of Dean of Women in Ministry in Chester Diocese.

17

When the new Bishop of Stockport was announced, the Archbishop of York predicted that Libby would “exercise her episcopal ministry with joy, prayerfulness, and trust in God”. The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby, said: “Her Christ-centred life, calmness and clear determination to serve the church and the community make her a wonderful choice.” The Bishop of Chester, the Rt Revd Dr Peter Forster, who led the nomination process, confirmed: "As the first woman bishop in the Church of England she will face many challenges as well as enjoying many opportunities to be an ambassador for Jesus Christ. I have no doubt that she has the gifts and determination to be an outstanding bishop.” Bishop Libby succeeded the Rt Revd Robert Atwell, now the Bishop of Exeter. Her husband, George, with whom she was ordained in 1994, is Coordinating Chaplain at Manchester Airport. They have two grown up children. Between episcopal duties, the Rt Revd Libby Lane hopes to continue learning the saxophone, supporting Manchester United and doing cryptic crosswords.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL St John’s Church 13th & 14th December 2014 Thank you all for your support of the recent Christmas Tree Festival. We made a total of £400 for Church Funds. The whole weekend went really well and we had lots of support. Thank you to all who made cakes and other tasty morsels for the Teas and also to those who ‘manned’ the Tea stall. Thanks, particularly, must go to those who knitted squares for the knitted tree and who put it together, and also to those who bought and decorated a tree. Without you there would have been no Festival. The beautiful pictures taken by the photographer from The Dorking Advertiser really showed St John’s ‘en fête’, and looking gorgeous. The Top Three Trees were, in no particular order: ‘Christmas on a Plate’ by North Holmwood Pre-School ‘The Norwegian Spruce’ by Jane Coombes ‘Cleanliness is Next to Godliness’ by Diana Letts and Mary Membrillera Many of you have indicated that you’d like us to hold another Christmas Tree Festival this year. Already I have been approached by a village group who didn’t participate last year who wish to do so this year. The dates do need to be finalised but will probably be on the equivalent weekend in 2015 - 12th and 13th December. If you, your family or group etc, would like to decorate a tree this coming December please let me know by email: mole.end@virgin.net There will be a couple of changes in 2015. One is that Hazel and I realised that it will be perfectly possible to hold a Cheese and Wine party in the Church on the Friday evening once the decorating activities have been completed; no details as yet but we would expect that it would cost no more than £5 a head. The other change is that we have already decided on our knitted tree colours so you could start knitting straight away if you wish, thus 21

avoiding frenetic knitting activity at the last minute. It has been suggested that we have a Black and White knitted tree (not shades of grey). Once again, I have printed the knitting instructions below (for 8 inch squares): Double knitting Size 8 (4mm) needles 40 stitches Aran wool Size 6 (5mm) needles 36 stitches Chunky wool Size 4 (6mm) needles 28 stitches You can use any knitting stitch that you like. Although each square should be one colour, it’d be lovely to have different textures of squares. If you are really clever you can use a cable stitch, but plain knitting or stocking stitch will do just as well. Especial thanks to Hazel, Margaret and Val – they know why. Jackie Rance

During the Christmas Tree Festival there was a Shakespeare Quiz. Your editor attempted this but gave up when he realised that he could only manage one of the questions! Jackie has kindly provided the answers:

THE SHAKESPEARE QUIZ Compiled by James Dark, a friend of St. John’s Church • • • • • • •

Othello – hanky: Desdemona’s kerchief is fundamental to the plot Macbeth – dagger: ‘Is this a dagger that I see before me?’ The Merchant of Venice – sausages: A pound of flesh Hamlet – skull: ‘Alas poor Yorick’ Romeo & Juliet – poison bottle The Tempest – shell The Merry Wives of Windsor – Queen Mary & Queen Elizabeth photos • All’s Well that Ends Well – 2 Springs (‘Spring’ is another name for ‘Well’) • Julius Caesar – U2 album cover: ‘Et tu Brute! Then fall Caesar’ 22

• Pericles – Fairy (‘Peri’ is a word for ‘fairy’) & John Cleese; hence Peri-cles • Antony & Cleopatra – snake, Cleopatra was bitten by an asp • The Taming of the Shrew – photo of Duchess of Cambridge (Kiss Me Kate) • Measure for Measure – foot & the hand (early methods of measuring) • Twelfth Night – yellow stockings, cross-gartered (Malvolio) • Richard III – Throat lozenges: ‘A ho(a)rse, a ho(a)rse, my kingdom for a ho(a)rse’ • Titus Andronicus – pork pie: A character is tricked into eating her sons in a pie.

St John’s Calendar 2016 – your photographs wanted! First of all, a big thank you to all who bought this year’s calendar. You have helped to raise £162 for the building fund. Someone kindly said to me that they were buying the St John’s calendar instead of the Countryfile calendar. I felt a bit guilty about depriving Children in Need of their income! But I realised that my humble efforts could not really compete with the wonderful pictures that go into the Countryfile calendar, and, after all, they have thousands of pictures to choose from. So I thought that for next year I need some help – and if you have a camera or a phone that takes pictures, that means you! I’d like to make next year’s calendar bigger and better, with more varied and seasonal pictures of the Church or anything connected with it – Teas on the Lawn perhaps, or the new building going up (??), or your favourite window maybe. I would also be interested in historical photographs of the Church if anyone has any. I can scan prints, slides and negatives, so pictures taken on anything from a box brownie to an iPhone are welcome. If there is sufficient response, we might have a photo competition next September, but don’t wait till then, get your camera out and get snapping now. Roger Coombes – email rv.coombes@tiscali.co.uk 23

Saluting Free Trade During February we can celebrate two decades of the Fairtrade movement, founded back in 1995. Recent research showed that 78 per cent of the UK public now recognise the Fairtrade Mark, which stands for the world’s largest and most recognised fair-trade system. Its aim is to secure a better deal for farmers and workers. Based in Bonn, Germany, it sets international standards, organises support for producers around the world and promotes trade justice internationally. The work of building a market for fair-trade products is carried out by national Fairtrade organisations across the world. There are such organisations not only in Europe but also in India, South Korea, Hong Kong and Kenya. An independent company runs the Fairtrade certification system, ensuring that the relevant social and environmental standards are met for new raw materials and products. Here in the UK, the Fairtrade Foundation is an independent organisation that provides independent certification that licenses use of the Fairtrade Mark on products in the UK. The Foundation was established in 1992 by CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Traidcraft and the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (to name just a few). The Parish Pump

BEGINNERS PLEASE In the autumn we looked at some of the lesser-known plays of GB Shaw; this term we are going to look at some of the plays of Noel Coward. The February meeting will take place at 32 Claygate Road at 7.30pm on Monday 2nd February. In March we will meet on Monday 9th (note the change) and in April we will meet on Monday 13th, our last meeting before September. All are welcome. Jackie Rance 01306-887416

Holmwood WI Our January meeting is always a good time to catch up with friends and fellow members and hear about their festive celebrations. 2015 was no exception. Laughter and chatter filled South Holmwood village hall when Holmwood WI met to hear Geoff Saunders tell us about his fascination with Coastal Weather Stations. His enthusiasm for the subject was catching and many members bought copies of his book. His fee and book sales all support Fight for Sight, which for the last seven decades has helped fund research into sight and vision problems. 2015 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the WI and there are many exciting events to look forward to in Surrey. Nearer to home, Holmwood members are looking out their valuables for an Antiques Roadshow in February and John Negus is “Wild About Flowers in March. We also enjoy pub lunches, craft afternoons and, of course, our delicious WI teas. We were pleased to welcome a potential new member this month and are always happy to see new faces. Our secretary, Maureen Lewington on 01306 882057 maureen.lewington@btinternet.com , has all the details.

COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT web: mail:

www.cbp-northholmwood.info info@cbp-northholmwood.info

We had hoped this month to announce firm plans for starting work on the Community Building but we are still in the process of negotiating. Before Christmas we met with the architect and the potential contractor. Between them they suggested a number of modifications to materials and to the detailed plans which would reduce the cost without materially changing the design of the building. We are very grateful to all those who have contributed to our funds and are particularly grateful for the recent substantial donations. We are now waiting to see if the revised prices are in line with the available funds and trying to ensure that there are no hidden extras which have been overlooked. We have had meetings on-site with the potential contractor and we are pressing ahead with getting the permissions he needs for access across the National Trust common and the minor diversion of the public footpath.

HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk Cold? Dark? Miserable? Wishing there was some light at the end of the long, wintery tunnel? Well, it just so happens I can help you with that! Whilst taking luncheon recently with some friends, tucking into an apple and rhubarb crumble, it was revealed that the new big thing to solve the impending energy crisis is, in fact, rhubarb. Not specifically in a crumble-based format, but rather at a more microscopic level. There are organic molecules called quinones you see, plentiful in plants, particularly rhubarb, from which sciencey types can now make batteries. Thinking ahead to the introduction of a government scheme whereby the horticulturallyminded householder is invited to feed their rhubarb into the National Grid in return for an energy bill rebate, I went skipping out to my veg beds. Alas, all that greeted me as I plucked the lid from the rhubarb forcer was some festering, blackened slimy foliage where my proud pink sticks should have been sprouting. Festering, blackened slimy foliage which, I might add with disappointing irony, I could make out only with the illuminating aid of a torch. Fear not though, the VPA will provide plenty of dazzling rays of sunshine in 2015, beginning this month with our first event of the year: Spring Evening and AGM Wednesday 11th February at 7.30pm South Holmwood Village Hall There’ll be nibbles, drinks and a speaker, so do come and join us at the South Holmwood Village Hall. The Spring Evening is also a top notch opportunity to pay your VPA subs for the coming year, and support all things vegetable.

Klingons and Capitalism Occasionally I have had to endure all, or part of, an appalling BBC1 programme called ‘The Apprentice’. For those of you unfamiliar with the show it appears to be a sort of competition in which teams are given various business related tasks. So far I have no quarrel with the concept. However, once the task is completed individuals in a successful team try to convince the judge that the success was not a team effort but was due entirely to their individual brilliance. Similarly, if a team fails then each individual tries desperately to pass the blame on to some other hapless member of the group. The prize for being the most successfully disloyal person is a job with a six figure salary. Possibly, for some, this is entertainment but it is also held up as a model for the Capitalist system. Most people of my age have some memory of the original ‘Star Trek’ TV series and might even remember the fairly regular villains called the ‘Klingons’. (Yes I do know that in ‘Star Trek the Next Generation’ they became good guys.) It appears that in this fictional world the best way for an ambitious young Klingon to get ahead is to murder the guy on the rung above. This kind of disloyalty could be seen as taking ‘The Apprentice’ to its logical conclusion. However, each time they appeared the poor old Klingons were defeated by the largely human ‘Federation’ and their strong belief in team work and self-sacrifice. So, it appears that whilst we can applaud disloyalty and selfcentredness in the real world, we yearn through fiction for a better more honourable society in which it is good to be part of something bigger and to work for the common good. I think that somebody about two thousand years ago talked a lot about a fair and loving society but we must not relegate those ideas to the realm of fiction. Could I at this point say ‘Love thy neighbour’?

Their programme includes a quartet by Haydn, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden quartet - whose haunting second-movement variations are based on one of Schubert’s own songs - and a quartet by the Hungarian composer Kodály, one of the founders of Hungarian national music. The Dante quartet has an excellent reputation so this should be a very good concert; two further concerts will follow in March. The Dorking Chamber Orchestra, playing in Great Bookham, has a concert of music from Georgian England. It will feature music by Handel, Arne, Boyce and Stanley, including an organ concerto by Handel and a selection of songs. The concert will start at 4pm and finish at about 6.30, with tea and cakes available afterwards. Verdi’s Rigoletto - an opera filled with drama and also with good tunes - will be performed by the Russian State Ballet and Opera House. This is the story of a hunchbacked court jester and his beautiful daughter, and of love and revenge which misfires with tragic consequences. There are also two opera screenings at the Dorking Halls this month. The first is Madame Butterfly, Puccini’s tragic tale of love and loss, which is performed on a stage suspended against the spectacular backdrop of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the famous opera house. Then comes a live relay from 40

the Royal Opera House of Wagner’s highly dramatic The Flying Dutchman, with the Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel singing the role of the doomed Dutchman. St Martin’s church is experimenting this year with a new format for the lunchtime recitals. There will now be one recital per month, held on the first Saturday at 12 noon until 12.45. The recitals are free, with a retiring collection in aid of the William Cole Trust fund, which supports the young organ scholars at St Martin’s. Coffee and lunches are available in the nearby Christian Centre. The recital on 7th February will be given by tenor James Lister with Mark Brafield at the piano. They will perform a selection of English songs, including music by Roger Quilter and Ivor Gurney. Finally, Watermill Jazz meets every Thursday evening. The club is able to get some distinguished performers from the world of jazz, and last year one of its concerts was recorded by the BBC and broadcast on Radio 3 in December. This month’s concerts are: a celebration of Tubby Hayes (5th), the Jo Fooks quartet (12th), Laura Jurd’s Chaos Orchestra (19th), and Mads Mathias (26th).

Church Commissioners named as second most charitable donor in UK The Church Commissioners have welcomed the recent news that they are the UK’s second most charitable giver in the publication of City AM’s list of the World’s top 20 donors. The list named the Church Commissioners as the eighth highest donor in the world – and second in the UK - giving £207.84m in charitable donations to support the Church of England. The total giving, which supports the Church’s ministry around the country, is highlighted in the Commissioners Annual Report for 2013, which announced that the performance of the investment fund exceeded its target of RPI +5% per annum, returning 15.9% during the year. Andrew Brown, Secretary to the Church Commissioners said that the news “confirms our commitment to resourcing the ministry and mission of the Church… Our giving seeks to put money behind church-led effective programmes which support local communities across the country.” The Annual Report features a range of Commissioners funded projects including: • Former hair stylist Revd Ben Norton has an Archdeaconry brief in York Diocese for pioneering work among young people building on earlier work on a major housing estate. He is also volunteering a day a week in the local hairdressing salon. • Liverpool Cathedral is committed to offering a variety of styles of worship that are accessible to all. The Zone 2 all-age, café-style service meets every Sunday at the same time as the traditional Choral Eucharist. • The Tolladine Mission in Worcester is based in an area with pockets of multiple deprivation. The missioners live in the area and their work includes a garden project for young people with learning and/or behavioural difficulties and work in local schools, along with opportunities to explore the Christian faith. Leith Hill Musical Festival 1905 - 2015: Celebrating Brian Kay's 20th year as Festival Conductor World premières from Bob Chilcott and John Rutter 8 & 14 March, 9-11 April Dorking Halls The 2015 Leith Hill Musical Festival is a double celebration as we mark our 110th anniversary year and Brian Kay’s 20th as Festival Conductor. The season includes our commission from one of the world’s most popular choral composers, Bob Chilcott, Dances of Time. Five contrasting pieces dance us through various ways of looking at time, particularly poignant for Bob and Brian who have known each other for 50 years. It is premièred by the Division 1 choirs on Friday 10th April. Our President, John Rutter, has very kindly written a short piece as a gift for Brian and the Festival. Awake, ye heavenly choirs, will be performed at the Division 2 and 3 concerts (Thursday and Saturday). Thursday sees a rare performance of the only recently discovered The Garden of Proserpine by our founding conductor, Ralph Vaughan Williams, alongside a choral favourite, Mozart’s Requiem. Another contemporary composer, Cecilia McDowall’s work can be heard on Saturday night. A Fancy of Folksongs is a suite of four imaginative arrangements and compliments Franz Schubert’s Magnificat, itself recalling the joyfully expressive music of the earlier composer, Joseph Haydn, from whose famous oratorio The Seasons, the choirs will perform Spring. Our 8th March concert, when independent singers join those from the twelve Festival choirs, will be Messiah and our Youth Choirs’ Competition takes place on 14th March.

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust February 2015 News from the Common Looking after the Common … Back in early December a small team of Mid-Holmwood residents, led by Elaine Lawless and including one very keen seven-year old, set out to clear a number of overgrown areas and footpaths. Well done and thanks for a job well done … and here's hoping that other local groups will step forward to assist with the continuing challenge of looking after the Common. Please contact us (see below) if you would like to borrow the essential tools for path clearing or to join one of our regular groups of volunteers. Rob Adam, Ranger, Holmwood Common. New Year's Day Walk By the time they reached the Viewpoint the starting group of thirty had grown to almost forty people, plus dogs of course! With mild, dry weather the walk around part of the Circular Trail and back across the Common to Fourwents Pond was much appreciated as an ideal antidote to any over-indulgence during Christmas and New Year. Many thanks to Diana and Mary for the refreshments at the end of the walk and the special treat of seeing all their newborn lambs; and many thanks to Elizabeth and Kathy for leading the walk. We live in an AONB … learn what it means for you An important date for your diary. The Friends' Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 26th February in South Holmwood Village Hall. The formal business will be completed quickly and we are pleased to announce that Ken Bare of the Surrey Hills Society will be explaining how we can all make the most of living in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). As usual, the National Trust will be reporting on the past year's activities and their plans for 2015 and beyond. 49

AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT December/ January It is always good to hear about local sportspersons achieving distinction at international level. On Saturday 10th January twenty year old Emilia Gorecka from Bookham won the Great Edinburgh 6 Km cross country women’s race, giving her a senior cross country title for the first time. After a disappointing performance in her last race at the European cross country in Bulgaria in December, it was a perfect start to 2015. There were two other Mole Valley based runners competing at Edinburgh, Georgina Bruinvels finished 24th in the senior women’s race and Luke Caldwell finished 27th in the senior men’s race. Well done. Formula 1 world champion, Lewis Hamilton, was voted BBC Sports Personality of the year at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow on 14th December. Irish golfer, Rory McIlroy, was runner up and athlete Jo Pavey, who at the age of 40 took the European Championship 10,000 metres gold medal, was third. The England women’s Rugby Team won the Team of the Year award for beating Canada 21 points to 9 in the final of the World Cup. Cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, Britain’s most decorated Olympian with six gold medals and one silver, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Prince Harry. British boxer, Amir Khan, won virtually every round in his fight against the much respected three time world champion Devon Alexander. Khan’s brilliant display has surely proved he is worthy of a mega fight with leading welterweight American Floyd Mayweather. Eight British Competitors, including amateur rider 43 year old Chris Cork, began the world’s most dangerous and gruelling of all motor sport events, the Dakar, on Sunday 4th January. They will have to tackle 5,500miles of forbidding terrain across the Andes and the Atacama Desert. Cork is fulfilling a lifelong dream and is hoping to complete the race on his motor bike.

Swiss Roger Federer became the third man in tennis history to achieve 1000 ATP tour wins when he beat Milos Raonic in the final of the Brisbane International on Sunday 11th January. Only Jimmy Connors (1253 wins) and Ivan Lendl (1071 wins) have won more than 1000 matches. Steven Gerrard caused shockwaves on Merseyside and throughout English football when he announced his decision to leave Liverpool and play in America. The reason he gave for his departure was the fear of becoming a part performer at the club where he is regarded as one of the greatest ever players. The final of the FA Cup is on Gerrard’s 35th birthday this year. What a wonderful sendoff it would be if Liverpool were in that final. After months of doubt it must have been a relieved Jenson Button when he was offered the chance to race with Woking based McLaren next season. He is to race alongside Fernando Alonso who has joined from Ferrari.

SEEING AND UNDERSTANDING Many people had seen the steam lift the lid of a kettle, but it took a James Watt to see it and go on to think of that power becoming a steam engine. It is all a matter of how we see things. We could see something a thousand times and not make the connection.

clock * eyes * game * glasses goggles * lens * picture scene * spectacles * television video * view * watch

Jesus explained why he taught with parables, stories that explain something in simple ways to do with everyday life that people of the time would recognise. He explained that it was because people look without seeing, and listen without understanding. (Matthew chapter 13: 13-14)

What gadget do we use to see through a wall? A window.

We all do this, and that is why we need other people to help us learn more about what the stories in the Bible mean. People who can explain and help us to see with ‘new eyes’.

Optician: What can you see out of the window? Patient: Only the sun. Optician: How far do you want to see, then?
