Dear friends, As you read this, it might be Easter but it might not be. The joys of Easter falling very early in the month! Around that last week of Jesus’ life, and the time after the Resurrection, life must have been in disarray for Jesus’ closest followers. That triumphant entry into Jerusalem on a donkey (matched only by us all arriving at St John’s School without a donkey); celebrating the Passover together – the Last Supper – and Jesus washing their feet; Judas betraying Jesus and so Jesus being arrested; the trial; Jesus’ crucifixion; the emptiness of that loss; and, then, hearing about the Resurrection before meeting the risen Jesus. It’s not hard to see why they would have been struggling and so it is probably no surprise that Peter denied even knowing Jesus, Mary Magdalene mistook Jesus for being the gardener (although why she thought a gardener would have been working so early is unclear) and Thomas refused to accept the others had seen Jesus truly risen. Do you ever struggle to get your head around things to do with God, things to do with Jesus? I know that I do at times. During Lent, some of the congregation at St John’s have been working through a course called “Moving On!”, thinking through their faith in deeper ways. Thinking what it means to be a Christian, a follower of Christ. Meeting, discussing and praying in small groups has allowed an exploration of faith in ways that might have been more difficult as an individual. Consider Jesus’ followers and how much they discussed as a group the weird things that had been happening, the strange things that Jesus had said and done in the past, and the amazing way God was working in that moment. Maybe these groups are no different – simply separated by around 2000 years!

How is your spiritual life? How many unanswered questions do you have? Or how many doubts do you have about it all? Where is God? For many of us, facing questions like this on our own can be next to impossible. After all, asking fellow members of the congregation can feel as if admitting to less knowledge, less faith, than someone else. That is where a “Spiritual Director” can come in. For many people, a Spiritual Director (sometimes called things like a soul friend) is someone who can accompany another in their Christian journey, helping to explore those difficult questions, reassuring them that they’re not weird for not knowing everything, providing guidance in their prayer life, helping someone to grow in faith. A Spiritual Director might be a priest but might not. They might be a monk or a nun, but might not. They might be ancient but might be relatively young. What they have in common is a faith that isn’t afraid to explore questions and a desire to help other people to grow in their own faith. As each of us tries to get our heads around exactly what happened on that first Holy Week and Easter, I would like to ask a question – would it help you to be able to explore things with someone else? If so, please speak to me and together we will try to find a suitable Spiritual Director for you. Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart

Mid-week Eucharist at St John’s Friday Mornings 8.30am Followed by breakfast. After the service Stuart will remain in the church until 10.30am for anyone who wants an informal chat with the vicar. 6

PRAYER WALKING IN DORKING Praying on-site with insight Prayer walking involves taking our prayers to the very places where we desire to see God’s presence manifested. It uses the sights, sounds, even smells to engage both body and mind in the ministry of prayer. Prayer walking is the powerful dynamic of praying on-site with God’s sight. It is an inconspicuous way of seeing where God is directing his church and its mission and praying for God's will. Joshua and Caleb walked throughout the Promised Land with a desire to see it as God saw it. They walked in godly vision. (Numbers 13). When Jesus sent out the 12 and 72 in two's to do what he had been doing, they returned with joy and he also was full of joy through the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 10 & Luke 10). Prayer walking is not only powerful, it can be fun! Prayer walking is very simple. We meet and pray before we go out to get a sense of God's purpose for the direction of our feet and prayers. Then we go out and in 2's or 3's walking where we discern God is leading us and stopping when we feel the need to pray for a place, people or situation. Why not come along and see for yourself next time. Next walks: 18th April, 16th May, 27th June and 18th July 10am at Dorking Christian Centre If you are unable to walk, join us at 10am for brief prayers and to send us out! North Holmwood Village Day 2015 Towards the end of last summer the organisers of Holmwood Marketplace put out a call for interest in reviving the North Holmwood Village Day. There was initially a very lukewarm response, with some people expressing an interest that it should happen, but no apparent capacity to organise the event. More recently, however, the management committee at North Holmwood Sports and Social Club has played the part of the cavalry, offering facilities and marching over the brow of the hill with enthusiasm and support.

A date and time has been set: Saturday 26th September 2015 - 11:00 to 15:00 Exact details are still being planned, but we do know for sure there will be entertainment, activities, food, drink, fundraising and networking opportunities for local groups and charities, and stalls selling local goods and services. Watch this space and get in touch if you’d like to help shape and grow the event, and our community, to something we can be really proud of. ST JOHN’S HOME GROUP Our Home Group usually meets twice monthly in members’ homes on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm. CHURCHES TOGETHER IN DORKING WALK OF WITNESS: GOOD FRIDAY 3rd APRIL The walk will move off from the car park at the back of the sports centre. Stewards please arrive at 10.30am for kitting and instructions, and everyone else please be there by 10.50am for brief instructions and a blessing of the walk. We move off at 11.00am sharp. Walkers should keep to the pavement as far as possible from there to a point in the High Street near the traffic-lighted pedestrian crossing near Halfords. Some have suggested that we should walk in silence. Please respect that. From the crossing mentioned, stewards will be on hand to assist but it will be for walkers to make their own way across the High Street, down the alleyway beside Barclays Bank, and into St Martin's churchyard. At or shortly before 11.30am, an act of worship will take place there or in the church itself. After the service, you should feel at liberty to make your own way to the tomb scene by the South Street bus stop and pause there in silent prayer before going on your way. Before or after doing so, please come into the Christian Centre for hot cross buns provided by St Martin's Shared Church. During the walk more hot cross buns, organised by Crossways Community Baptist Church and packaged to include an explanation of the cross, will have been offered to the public in the High Street.

THE REVEREND LEAH KEARNS Leah and her brother were blessed of God by being privileged to have loving and caring parents. They were faithful in sending them along each week to the Parish Church in Drumcree, Northern Ireland. Their father was a butcher who worked long hours and their mother sadly suffered badly with arthritis, so Leah used to take her brother by the hand to the dentist, to Sunday school etc. She was in the Girls Brigade and had many friends as she grew into her teens. She also did well at school and was quite successful at the Elocution Festivals. Due to her mother’s health, Leah took on the many chores required around the house and quickly attained basic training in health care whilst looking after her mother. Leah was in her early teens when she told her mother of her coming to personal faith in Jesus Christ. Leah at that time worked as a secretary with a building firm and in the years that followed she became more involved in Christian leadership activities. In 1960 Leah responded to her Christian call to join the Church Army. It was during those early years that she met, and fell in love with, David and they both sincerely dedicated their lives in the pursuit of God’s will. They got married at Drumcree Parish Church in 1969. After their honeymoon they were posted to work together looking after a men’s hostel in London. After getting settled in at the hostel on the first night they decided to go for a walk along the Thames embankment. On their return they discovered that their private quarters had been burgled and their wedding presents stolen. Undaunted, they continued working for the wellbeing of those men. Leah also worked for some time at a drug addiction centre for the young in London. She also spoke at Speakers Corner in Hyde Park. David and Leah then moved to Preston where David was chaplain in the prison. During the years in Preston, Leah and David fostered children, besides bringing up their sons, Mark and Timothy. 21

Leah was ordained in St Paul’s Cathedral on 17th April, 1994 - one of the first women to be ordained in the Church of England’s history. By that stage the family lived at Morden. She served in several nearby parishes. Around 1988 Leah had been accepted to hold the office of Chaplain at Holloway Women’s Prison, the largest Women’s Prison in the UK. At her retirement service (from full time work) in Holloway Prison on 22nd November, 1998 Leah addressed what she called “Her Girls”, requesting that they choose a chorus to sing as they filed out of the chapel and back to their various rooms. A voice shouted out from the audience, “Give me joy in my heart, keep me singing”. The sound of some 300 ladies walking away singing that chorus was a most moving experience. The years that followed saw Leah and David settle in North Holmwood. A sad time in Leah’s life was when David was taken seriously ill with Motor Neurone disease and died on 28th September 2001. She continued to work part time in prisons and to help churches in the area when they were needing cover, particularly St John’s, the nearest one to her home. She will be remembered for her guidance to many and her willingness to talk of her faith at any time – especially on the local buses!

MUSIC IN DORKING - APRIL 2015 by Ian Codd 1st at 7.15, opera screening at Dorking Halls, £17, 01306 881717 2nd 9th 16th 23rd 30th at 8.30, Watermill Jazz at Friends Life, £17-19, 07415 815784 4th at 12.00, lunchtime recital at St Martin’s, free, 01306 884229 9th 10th 11th at 7.30, Leith Hill Musical Festival at Dorking Halls, £9-22, 01403 240093 17th at 7.30, Vienna Festival Ballet at Dorking Halls, £13-23, 01306 881717 18th at 7.30, flute recital at Dorking Halls, £16, 01306 740619 19th at 4.00, ballet screening at Dorking Halls, £17, 01306 881717 April sees the annual Leith Hill Musical Festival, one of the major events in the Dorking music calendar. There are three days of competitions and concerts, involving a dozen local choirs and hundreds of enthusiastic singers. Each morning, starting at 9am, there is a competition which anyone is welcome to drop into and listen. After the choirs have done battle with each other in the morning, they come together for an afternoon rehearsal and then give a combined concert in the evening with the Festival conductor, Brian Kay. This year, the music includes the world premiere of a new work written especially for the festival by Bob Chilcott, plus only the second performance of a piece by Vaughan Williams, unearthed and published very recently. You can also hear Mozart’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise, Spring from Haydn’s The Seasons, and Schubert’s Magnificat. A feast of great choral music to enjoy! The Dorking Concertgoers present a flute recital, given by Rosanna Ter-Berg with Leo Nicholson at the piano. Their attractive and varied programme includes Debussy’s atmospheric Syrinx for solo flute, Poulenc’s bright and playful flute sonata, music by Mozart, Schubert and Liszt, and a modern classic for the flute entitled Zoom Tube by Ian Clarke. A mixed programme like this should appeal to a wide audience.

23

This month’s lunchtime recital at St Martin’s church will be given by the Director of Music and organist, Matthew Beetschen, who sadly will be leaving soon after only a short tenure. Watermill Jazz has, as usual, a good line-up of players from the world of jazz: the Zoe Rahman trio (2nd), John Etheridge’s Sweet Chorus (9th), Gilad Atzmon and the Orient House Ensemble (16th), the Tony Kinsey quartet (23rd), and the Steve Fishwick sextet (30th). Dorking Halls welcomes the Vienna Festival Ballet in a 35th anniversary Gala production. They will perform some of the best-loved scenes from Tchaikovsky’s ballets, including Act 2 of Swan Lake, the journey to the land of snow from The Nutcracker, and the ‘Rose adagio’ from Sleeping Beauty. For all lovers of ballet, this should be a real treat. Finally, live screenings at the Dorking Halls include Kurt Weill’s opera The rise and fall of the city of Mahagonny from the Royal Opera House (not often performed but with some very catchy tunes), and Ivan the Terrible with music by Prokofiev, from the Bolshoi ballet in Moscow.

EASTER AT ST JOHN’S UNPACKED A quick glance at the Calendar will give you a good indication of “What’s On” during Holy Week and Easter – but might lead you to ask what that particular service is all about… So here is a summary of what is planned, for you to make an informed decision about which services to attend. Try coming to a service you haven’t attended before! However you spend Holy Week and Easter, make time to practise the presence of God – whether through a church service or not. You’ll find that Easter Day takes on a deeper significance as a result.

PALM SUNDAY 29th March 10.00am Procession from Church 10.30am Palm Sunday Celebration at St John’s School, Goodwyns Road Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday – the day when we remember Jesus and his followers entering Jerusalem, to the excitement of the crowds. This year we start the service at the Church. It is quite an experience to walk through the village as a church (adults and children alike), and remind ourselves of how much more emotional Jesus must have felt.

MONDAY 30th March - 8pm Holy week worship TUESDAY 31st March - 8pm Service of Hope Anyone missing someone precious who has died will know that the ache is present throughout the year, but that it feels even more acute when festivals – such as Christmas and Easter – come around. Each Easter, though, we offer a Service of Hope which looks at the Easter message of new life with God. The service is open to anyone. You don’t have to be a churchgoer; neither does the bereavement have to be recent or connected with St John’s in any way. The service is less than an hour long.

WEDNESDAY 1st April - 8pm Holy week worship 27

MAUNDY THURSDAY 2nd April 8pm Maundy Thursday Eucharist If you want worship which combines spiritual presence, power and pathos all in one service, then come to this. From its direct reminder of the Last Supper, through to the recalling of Jesus in the loneliness of Gethsemane – this is a deeply moving service. Nothing prepares you for Good Friday quite so well as seeing the church stripped bare in front of your eyes….

GOOD FRIDAY 3rd April 10.50am Churches Together in Dorking Procession This is an essential and powerful part of Good Friday for many across our churches. The procession begins at Dorking Halls Car Park (meet at 10.50am for 11am start) and ends outside St Martin’s (service 11.30am or earlier). The sight of all churches walking together speaks for itself.

2pm Stations of the Cross Most services at St John’s follow a set liturgy – this one is the exception. It isn’t ‘clergy led’ or indeed ‘clergy planned’ – which makes it very special. Instead, you will experience a service which will touch you at many levels, from what you are seeing and hearing to the thoughts prompted in consequence.

HOLY SATURDAY 4th April 10.00am – Decorating the Church Technically this is not a service, but those people who decorate the church for Easter are showing their own reverence to God. You don’t need to be an expert in flower arranging, just someone willing to come along and take part.

1pm – 4pm National Trust Easter Egg Hunt and Teas at the Church Again not a service, but just good fun. Starting from the Church this hunt goes over the common. Details are in the National Trust article. Teas will be available in the Church.

28

EASTER DAY - SUNDAY 5th April 5.30am Dawn Service, followed by breakfast For some this service is the Easter highlight! There is nothing quite like the feeling of starting worship outside the church, in the last few minutes of darkness and then seeing the light of dawn fill the church. It’s extraordinary and if you’re wondering why we do it, it is because John’s Gospel reminds us that Mary Magdalene visited the tomb of Jesus in darkness (and, of course, found it empty) but then encountered him in the garden after the dawn. So this service welcomes Easter Day by taking us from darkness to light, finishing with breakfast (your first hot cross bun of the day!).

8am Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer) If you enjoy the traditional Prayer Book service, or if you are planning to head off to spend the day elsewhere, this 8am service is for you.

10am Easter Celebration Eucharist Our main celebration of the day! All ages welcome! Come and join us, to celebrate the Resurrection with joy! Whatever your choice of service(s), we look forward to seeing you over Holy Week and Easter.

Dorking Deanery synod The next Dorking Deanery synod meeting is an open meeting (they all are actually!)- and everyone is very, very welcome to come along to St Martin’s Church on 28th April at 7.15pm for 7.30pm to meet the new Bishop of Guildford. Bishop Andrew really wants to meet as many people as possible, and also would like to have some form of Question and Answer time. If you have any questions for him please send them by email before Easter if possible to janeschofield@hotmail.co.uk . Do make the effort to come along - it will be worth it. (If possible can we have numbers in advance for catering purposes.)

COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT web: mail:

www.cbp-northholmwood.info info@cbp-northholmwood.info

We had again hoped to announce firm plans for starting work on the Community Building but we are unfortunately still in the process of negotiating with a contractor. We are now waiting to see if the prices are in line with the available funds and trying to ensure that there are no hidden extras which have been overlooked. We are pressing ahead with getting the permissions needed for access across the National Trust common and the minor diversion of the public footpath as well as permission from Mole Valley District Council and the Diocese of Guildford for minor tree works. Before we start building we will also need to get final permission from the Diocese to carry out the work.

DORKING MUSEUM IN APRIL Dorking Museum brings alive the story of Dorking and the surrounding villages from the age of the dinosaurs through to the development of synthetic penicillin. You’ll be surprised what a big influence a small town has had. The permanent displays are supported by a programme of special exhibitions, extensive archives of local information, family activities, a museum shop and more. Our current special exhibition, Dorking: Cycling Capital of England, has created enormous interest. It celebrates Dorking’s place at the forefront of leisure and competitive cycling from the earliest days of the ‘bone-shaker’ and penny-farthing to the 2012 Olympics and the worldwide reputation of the Zig Zag. The exhibition, in partnership with Dorking Cycling Club, continues to run throughout April. Our Family Activity for April is Explore the Museum – Saturday 18th April, 2pm to 4pm. Find out what the Museum does. Handle some of the objects and try to work out what they are. Find out how the Museum prepares and protects its exhibits from bugs. Make a bug to take home. Ideal for families with children up to age ten. Dorking South Street Caves will re-open to the public this Spring – an eagerly awaited event. At a special ceremony in March, the Caves were officially re-opened by HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex. If you wish to take a trip into history, deep underground, the Museum will be running 45-minute tours by appointment between May and October for groups and organisations of up to 12 adults and young people. For further information or to arrange a tour, please contact Jean Ward on admin@dorkingmuseum.org.uk. Volunteers needed: With no public funding, the Museum is run and staffed entirely by volunteers. A wide range of opportunities await enthusiastic and motivated people. The Museum is currently looking 42

for volunteers who can spare a little time to welcome visitors, guide them around the Museum and handle questions and sales. No experience necessary. Look at the full range of volunteer opportunities on our website – complete an application form online or pick one up from the Museum. Holmwood WI THERE was a touch of spring in the air as Holmwood WI met for their March meeting on a sunny but windy Wednesday afternoon. We were delighted to welcome John Negus once again for his talk “Wild About Flowers”. Split into two teams, members enjoyed putting their thinking caps on to name the colourful shrubs and flowers in each slide. They all seemed very knowledgeable giving both common and botanical names to many of the plants that grow around Holmwood Common and beyond. John included culinary hints and amusing anecdotes in his informative talk. This summer we will be visiting Eltham Place and The Red House, meeting for our annual garden party and, in this special WI centenary year, meeting in Reigate Park Church for the baton handover and party afternoon. Two new members have joined us already in 2015 but we are always happy to welcome new friends. Secretary Maureen Lewington, 01306 882057, maureen.lewington@btinternet.com has all the details. 43

HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk The most exciting Easter related thing happened in my garden today – my daily peek into the nest box of the hen house finally bore chicken-fruit…the first egg of the new season! It’s always a thrill each year, particularly as the flock had gone from a boisterous 10 last summer, to a bewildered three by autumn as a result of a fox picking them off one by one. We let the chickens roam free around the garden, preferring to adopt a vaguely James Deanesque live fast, die young approach to chicken husbandry, rather than keeping them enclosed. Having said that, until last summer the only time we lost a bird was when it dropped off its perch through entirely natural causes. But now we are well and truly on the local fox radar, it is tricky to know whether to restock. Our last chickens came from the New Forest. That’s a lot of chicken miles, but on the other hand, anyone in the fancy could see they were particularly fine birds. We’re getting up steam now for the 71st VPA Summer Show, moved back to its more regular spot in July. So make sure to encourage your own ladies to start laying now; nice regular eggs with sparkling shells in glorious technicolour and, hopefully, the egg entries in this year’s Summer Show will be even more spectacular than ever before. Get practising your best bakes, focusing on your finest photos and propagating your parsnips ready for the competition.

Put it in the diary now: VPA Summer Show - Saturday 18th July VPA Dog Show – Sunday 19th July Old School Field, South Holmwood Ros Treliving

Leith Hill Musical Festival 1905 - 2015: Celebrating Brian Kay's 20th year as Festival Conductor World premières from Bob Chilcott and John Rutter 9th – 11th April, Dorking Halls The 2015 Leith Hill Musical Festival is a double celebration as we mark our 110th anniversary year and Brian Kay’s 20th as Festival Conductor. The season includes our commission from one of the world’s most popular choral composers, Bob Chilcott, Dances of Time. Five contrasting pieces dance us through various ways of looking at time, particularly poignant for Bob and Brian who have known each other for 50 years. It is premièred by the Division 1 choirs on Friday 10th April. Our President, John Rutter, has very kindly written a short piece as a gift for Brian and the Festival. Awake, ye heavenly choirs, will be performed at the Division 2 and 3 concerts (Thursday and Saturday). Thursday sees a rare performance of the only recently discovered The Garden of Proserpine by our founding conductor, Ralph Vaughan Williams, alongside a choral favourite, Mozart’s Requiem. Another contemporary composer, Cecilia McDowall’s work can be heard on Saturday night. A Fancy of Folksongs is a suite of four imaginative arrangements and compliments Franz Schubert’s Magnificat, itself recalling the joyfully expressive music of the earlier composer, Joseph Haydn, from whose famous oratorio The Seasons, the choirs will perform Spring.

Bishop of Dorking Announces Retirement The Rt Revd Ian Brackley has announced that he will retire this autumn after nearly 20 years as Bishop of Dorking. There will be a farewell service at 3pm on Sunday 6th September at Guildford Cathedral to which everyone is invited. Bishop Ian will officially retire on 30th September after which he and his wife Penny will move to Petersfield in the Diocese of Portsmouth. More information will be made available in due course. 47

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust Holmwood Common Newsletter April 2015 BLUEBELLS These well loved flowers should be pushing up and flowering in April. Our Ranger ROB ADAM tells us what to look out for this month: Bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta), are one of the classic Spring flowers and to come across a little pocket in a dappled wooded glade is such a pleasure. It’s a real shame that the pesky Spanish bluebell is slowly invading the countryside and cross breeding with native stock to give hybrids. The ways to tell them apart are the Spanish variety is generally bigger, paler and upright with flowers all around the stem as opposed to English bluebell which is smaller and more delicate, droops and has very blue (or sometimes white) flowers on one side of the stem. Spring is always a great time to be out on the Common, it brings a smile to the face to see the cheerfully-coloured Brimstone butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni ) flitting over the grass or along the woodland tracks. We’ve been cutting blackthorn in King’s Meadow, Fourwents Pond. This is to reinstate the breeding habitat favourable for the Brown Hairstreak butterfly (Thecla betulae) which lays its eggs on the young growth of the blackthorn. At one time King’s Meadow was a notable site in the Mole Valley area for this butterfly and as it has declined nationally, this is a very worthwhile project.

AGM 26 FEBRUARY 2015 Officers As mentioned in March's Newsletter we enjoyed a well attended meeting. David Lloyd was re-elected Chairman, Michael Howard, Treasurer and Yvonne Brown, Secretary. Elaine Lawless was formally 51

elected as a new Committee member. David Wheatland is now retired after many years as Treasurer and thanks were given to him for his work. David Lloyd also thanked all the volunteers who had helped over the past year on projects clearing and improving the common. Membership Jane Thornton reported that 63 had renewed their membership and three new people signed up at the meeting. If you haven't yet renewed yours please do! Membership this year is a minimum of £7.00 per household. Either send a cheque (payable to FOHC) or drop in the cash to Jane Thornton, 21 St John's, North Holmwood RH5 4JG. Treasurer's report Michael Howard reported that funds are healthy and that our greatest outgoing was towards the maps of the Common which are now in place in the car parks round the Common and seem to be proving helpful and informative to visitors. Photography prize The Friends of Holmwood Common fund a prize at the annual VPA Show in July. This is for a photography class and this year the subject will be “Wildlife” - a tricky one as not many of the subjects are going to stop still and pose for you! However, a challenge and one to make you really look and see what is going on around you. So don't forget to take your camera or phone and be prepared for that special moment. Facebook As you know, our Friends of Holmwood Common Facebook page was to be launched at the AGM and David Lloyd has announced that he will give a small prize for the best posts in each month of April, May, June and July. Log in to Facebook and find the Friends of Holmwood Common page and (most important) click on like. Then you will be able to take part. We look forward to lots of photos and messages of interesting things spotted on the common. Events will be notified on our page so this is somewhere to turn for information too. 52

Rangers report Rob showed slides of ongoing work on the Common especially round Fourwents Pond which is much improved and will provide better habitat for butterflies. During the year a big effort was made to carry out ditching, the importance of which was shown after the terrible flooding last winter. This will be continued at intervals on a regular basis. Also bracken spraying will be done again this year in an effort to clear some open areas. Invited Speaker – Ken Bare of Surrey Hills Society Ken told us that the Surrey Hills comprise of a surprisingly large area from the west to the east of the county taking in heathland, woodland and chalk hills. There is very little heathland left in England such as Thursley Common, so it is particularly important to protect it, especially as it is endangered by the spread of bracken. The habitat this low nutrient, sandy soil provides is important for certain species of plant and wildlife, but, as it is not productive farm land, much has been built on. There are also areas of chalk downland which, if never 'improved' by fertilisers are a wonderful habitat for plants, flowers and butterflies. We can find one such area close by at Ranmore. Surrey is a very wooded county and Ken showed us a photo taken on Cotmandene with wooded hills in the background. He explained that woods are not natural anymore and have been managed for hundreds of years. This is a good thing, beneficial for the trees and providing more light and therefore more bio-diversity. Open woodland glades are essential for English Bluebells and Britain contains the largest population of these flowers in the world. Once there were crafts and industry that relied upon the management of woodland but, of course, this is no longer the case and woods now have to be managed in other ways. In fact, it was interesting to hear that once the Tillingbourne was one of the most industrialised rivers, with its banks lined by mills making gunpowder, bank notes and with the water powering ironworks. 53

Ken's talk made us realise how important it is that the National Trust continues to manage our woodland for the benefit of the habitat and our enjoyment. Questionnaires Leaflets were handed out with questions on what the Friends value or not about the Common. The Committee wants to get feedback on how people think about the role of the Friends and we are keen to know what all users of the Common feel about the experience of using it and what action the FOHC can do for the benefit of the Common and its users. We are planning to e-mail our registered members but anyone who would like to complete a questionnaire can contact us. AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT February / March At The Grand Prix Athletics in Birmingham on Saturday 21st February, Mo Farah ran a phenomenal race which was a joy to watch; setting a new world record of 8 minutes 03.40 seconds for 2 miles. Katarina Johnson Thompson added to her British high jump record of 1.97 metres with a new long jump best of 6.93 metres. I suspect, like many others, I had to keep switching from the Davis Cup tennis on BBC1 to watch the European Indoor championships athletics in Prague. Katarina Johnson Thompson won gold in the pentathlon after a superb performance only to burst into tears of despair because she missed out on a world record by 13 points. Seren Bundy-Davies was despondent after only winning a bronze in the 400m and Lee Emanuel said he was disappointed with his silver in the 3000m. Richard Kilty, the ‘Teeside Tornado’, stormed to a 60m gold in 6.51 seconds. England came third in the medal’s table. Andy Murray led Great Britain to a tennis Davis Cup victory over the USA in Glasgow over the weekend 8th/9th March. He held off a determined challenge from 6ft 10in John Isner to win three straight sets. Though Murray was the star it was James Ward’s epic against Isner that turned the match in GB’s favour. The support from the 7,700 capacity crowd was incredible. Great Britain’s opponents in the quarter-finals will be France. England’s performance in the group stages of the one day 50 overs cricket World Cup which led to their exit has been shocking. Thumping defeats by Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, and losing to Bangladesh, has shown how far they have been left behind in 50 over cricket. Chelsea’s manager, Jose Mourinho, won his seventh trophy with the club when they beat Tottenham Hotspurs two goals to nil in the final of the Capital One Cup. Chelsea’s captain, John Terry, scored their opening goal on the stroke of half time and led the celebrations after collecting the trophy. Great Britain’s Lizzy Yarnold celebrated after winning gold at the World Skeleton championships in Germany. She said, “I’m so 55

pleased I can say I’m World champion as well as Olympic and European champion – it’s all I’ve ever wanted”. It is amazing how she hurtles down that icy chute on what looks like a tin tray. Cyclist Dame Storey failed in her attempt to break the women’s one hour world record. The eleven time Paralympic gold medallist covered 28.27 miles in 60 minutes which was .35 miles shy of the 28.62 miles record set by Dutch rider Leontien Van Moorsell in 2008. Dame Sarah Storey said, “It was the hardest hour of my life”. The Six Nations Rugby Football Tournament grand slam eluded England once more as they were outclassed by Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin in the third round. England’s captain, Chris Robshaw, admitted England’s indiscipline cost them the match as Ireland clinched a 19 points to 9 win. However they redeemed themselves in the next round on 14th March by beating Scotland 25 points to 13 and once again winning the Calcutta Cup.

SPREAD THE NEWS

JESUS IS ALIVE! Early on the first Easter morning Mary Magdalene and some other women went to the tomb where Jesus had been buried. When they reached the tomb it was open, the big stone that had sealed the entrance was rolled away - and it was empty! They thought that someone had stolen Jesus’ body but an angel told Mary what had really happened, that Jesus was alive! The disciples were all together when Mary arrived back with her news and told them what had happened, but they wouldn’t believe her. They were confused and afraid. Sometimes we say ‘I can’t believe it’ if someone tells us really good news. We say ‘I’ll believe it when I see it with my own eyes’ and that is what the disciples said. When they saw the risen Jesus they believed. Read about what happened that first Easter Day in the four Gospels. What is the next thing that you do when you hear good news? You want to share it with someone else. Share the Good News with someone this Easter!

One way you can pass the good news on is to send Easter cards. You could make some of these easy Easter egg cards (the egg is a symbol of new life so that’s why we have eggs at Easter). You will need • a strip of thin card about 10cm by 30cm • another piece of coloured card for the egg about 9cm by 12cm • felt tip pens • a ruler, scissors and a glue stick. Fold the long strip of card in half and then each half back on itself to make a W shape. Draw an egg shape on the coloured card and cut round it. Cut the egg in half with a jagged edge and stick it onto the folded card as shown. Decorate it and write your message inside - you could even draw a fluffy yellow chick inside the egg. What is smooth, oval and very rich? An eggstravaganza.
