Dear friends, I am writing this letter a few hours after chairing the 2017 APCM at St John’s. It is also the first in the new Community Building – and it was great to see so many people staying for it. During last year’s APCM, in church, we were only too aware that the new Community Building was going up only a few metres away. At the 2015 APCM, on the other hand, we still had the old Parish Room standing. From one APCM to another, things have changed. Nothing is quite as it was before. Looking back at the 6 APCMs I have chaired here at St John’s, there have been so many changes of church officers – Churchwardens, Deanery Synod representatives, PCC members. There have been so many changes of people on the church Electoral Roll, too; people passing away, people moving away, new people moving into the area, people worshipping with us for the first time. It is useful to reflect upon that change. Nothing is static, even in church. Sometimes we might feel as if nothing changes in church, sometimes we might wish that nothing changed in church, but it does. Each of us has changed since the 2016 APCM – in ways we recognise and in ways that we don’t – and so the Church of which we are a part changes too. At the APCM we see and hear reports of what has happened – what has changed – in the past year and we elect church officers to help in the leadership and running of the church for the coming year. As a result of this, we look forward – with confidence – towards a future which God has not yet revealed. It seems quite apt to have experienced the APCM during Lent, during that time of preparation, of self-examination and reflection, as we get ready for Easter – for, as we reach that moment of new life in Christ as we celebrate Christ’s Resurrection, we are all set to move forward into this new reality, this new season, as we journey forwards in our faith. Slow-moving at times, but never static!

Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart 5

From Capt John Bruce Worsfold CA TSSF Have you heard the story about the mother hen and the fire? Apparently a hen and her chicks were in a barn when the barn caught fire, there was no way out; she gathered all her chicks under her wings, while the fire raged. When the fire was put out the firemen found the chicken black and burnt and dead. When they lifted the burnt chicken up, underneath were all her chicks alive and well. The hen died so that her chicks might have life. Jesus died for us on the cross that we too might have life - life to the full. God came to us in the form of His Son and gave His life and died a terrible death that we might have life throughout eternity and be with God forever. To practising Christians Good Friday is a day when they feel a difference in the day. Not many of us can remember when capital punishment was part of our law in this country. On the day of the hanging it seemed as if the whole country went silent. On Good Friday I always feel a strange kind of silence until after 3 o'clock when that feeling always seems to lift. It seems as if the execution had taken place once more; and again we had remembered Jesus’ death on the cross, standing there at the foot of the cross with him. In a prayerful mind’s eye I had again tried to visualise what that dreadful and frightening day had been like for our Saviour. How much He must love you personally and me personally and our whole world to have gone through that terrible ordeal for us all. Please just spend ten or twenty minutes each day during Holy Week in silence reading and imagining what Jesus had to go through from the agony in the garden of Gethsemane until His death on the cross. Jesus was human like you and me. No reading, no film, can ever show us what it was like for Jesus to suffer the beatings, the flogging and the terrible abuse and humiliation from all those around Him. Jesus was stripped naked before being nailed to the cross. Those being crucified would struggle, and scream. They would wet themselves and some would soil themselves. Jesus Himself went calmly to His death, praying for His executioners. We can never imagine the horror that our God went through for us on that first Good Friday. Please be with our Lord on Good Friday. Stand by the cross with His mother and St John, the centurion and those women who had followed Him and cared for his needs. Jesus is dying, in agony sore, Jesus is suffering more and more Jesus is bowed with the weight of His woe, Jesus is faint with each bitter throe. Jesus is bearing it all in my stead, With His agonised frame and His thorn-crowned head, Wonder of wonders it ever must be! Jesus the Crucified, pleads for me! 12

Holmwoods Mothers’ Union There is strength in numbers. Since we have increased by welcoming the members from St Martin’s to join us I have noticed an increased optimism in the membership of our branch which is very heartening. This month we enjoyed a Corporate Communion at North Holmwood, presided over by Revd Stuart Tanswell, who made us very comfortable and warm in the church with a nave altar to save people having to mount the steps into the choir. The gospel for the day (Matthew 25:31-end) might always be used for MU services as it reflects the many “Faith in Action” projects initiated by MU. The service was followed by a generous bring and share lunch enjoyed by all in the lovely Community Building. It was a good opportunity to get to know each other. On Monday, 3rd April our meeting will start at 12 noon in the North Holmwood Community Building. Gerry Spence and Elizabeth Cotton will lead a Lent and Easter reflection. This will be followed by lunchtime when soup, rolls and the delicious North Holmwood coffee will be available and we invite everyone to bring their own picnic if they would like anything else. There will be no meeting on 1st May as it is the Bank Holiday. Revd Virginia Smith will join us on Monday, 5th June. There is much beyond the branch meeting for us to go to, locally and further away. There is a diocesan Day of Refreshment on 8th April at Cobham and the monthly MU Corporate Communion at St Martin’s at 11.00am on the second Wednesday, followed by coffee. In the Cathedral there is the Pilgrimage of Prayer on the second Tuesday each month at 11.00am. The MU is kept busy and I have not mentioned the activities that are undertaken voluntarily and individually.

Cook for Syria report It all started with a cookbook I was given as a Christmas present. #CookforSyria was a collection of Syrian recipes encouraging everyone from the UK’s top chefs to people at home to cook and raise money in aid of UNICEF’s Syria Relief fund. I had been wondering what I could possibly do to help and the food in the book looked great, so, on New Year’s Eve I decided to put on a supperclub and set up a Facebook Group to see if the idea might be supported. After tentatively publishing the group and inviting who I thought might be interested, I took the dog for a walk. When I returned two hours later, the group had almost one hundred members, many of which were offering help — the event was on! So I had a cause, an event, an idea for the date and some support; all we needed now was... was... everything else! First thing was a venue and, after a long and fruitless search, a friend suggested the Community Building attached to St John's Church at North Holmwood. A visit and meeting with Jim Edwards, the Church Warden, convinced me it could work. The only real problem was the single hob and cooker — could I get out a three course meal for 60 out of equipment more suited to cooking a family Sunday lunch? I thought I could, but what really clinched it in the end was the generosity of the Church. From that moment on there was no way we were going to hold the event anywhere else. The next month flew by in a flurry of social media, emails, cooking experiments and meetings. On top of the supperclub we were going to boost fundraising with a paying bar, an auction of promises and a raffle. Support was a concern; support on Facebook is great but sometimes it remains just that — support on Facebook. I now wanted real help and, magically, people responded just when I thought I had been too ambitious and the event might flounder. Teams were coming together and people were starting to book; it was starting to get real but my confidence in getting the meal out was starting to feel a bit misplaced. I am not a chef, and while I had done a few community events in the past, that experience 19

was just enough to give me an insight into all the things that could go wrong. There was no margin for error on parts of the meal and I had more than one sleepless night in the run up to the evening. On the plus side though, the church's kindness and generosity was mirrored both by Dorking traders and the community — more help, more auction offers and more raffle prizes. Come the day and the sun shone. An early start, and by midday, with the help of the build-up team, almost everything was in place and the room looked great. 6.00pm and we reconvened to make last minute adjustments to open at 7.00pm. We aimed to start serving the mezze at 7.30pm and hoped to get the dessert down at 9.00pm to give us an hour for the auction and raffle and an hour after that to clear up. Well it was a magical evening. It all went to plan although we finished the auction a little late, the meal was fine and everyone seemed to have a great time. When all was done and dusted, we raised £2666 with more donations coming in; using Gift Aid there is the possibility of taking the final figure to over £3000. What have I learnt or had reconfirmed by the experience? That, given the chance, people love to help and that the experience of working together with like-minded people towards a common cause is a life affirming experience. Any advice? Get involved in something local. Would I do it again? Yes — but maybe give it a week or two.

Stephen Edgar

The Leith Hill Musical Festival runs for three days, under its new festival conductor Jonathan Willcocks. Each morning there are competitions as the individual choirs, with their own conductors, sing a range of pieces from madrigals to full-chorus works, and the adjudicators give their verdict. Anyone is welcome to drop in and listen during the morning. Following an afternoon rehearsal, the choirs then unite to give a combined concert with soloists and orchestra, under the baton of Jonathan Willcocks. This year’s main works are: Vaughan Williams’ Dona nobis pacem and Parry’s Blest pair of sirens (Thursday), Mendelssohn’s Elijah (Friday), and Haydn’s Little organ mass and Andrew Carter’s Benedicite (Saturday). The Dorking Concertgoers present the third and final concert in the series given by the Piatti string quartet. Their concerts have focussed on the three string quartets of Brahms, and here they will complete the set by playing the third quartet. This is a relaxed piece with an opening movement in hunting style and a lovely Brahmsian intermezzo. One of Beethoven’s greatest quartets, op.130 in B flat, a powerful work in six movements, will provide the final work from the Piatti quartet. 28

There is one opera screening at the Dorking Halls, a recording of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly from the Royal Opera. This is a tragic tale of love betrayed, told through Puccini’s powerful and highly emotional music. There are also three ballet screenings. Live from the Bolshoi in Moscow comes A hero of our time, a story about a young Russian officer, based on the classic novel by Lermontov (9th). Jewels comes live from the Royal Ballet and features the music of Fauré, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky (11th) and finally there is a recording of Coppelia from the Australian Ballet (27th). ‘Musigals’ is presented by Girlguiding Surrey East to raise money for their campsite and holiday house. Members of the rainbows, brownies and guides will be singing and dancing their way through some of their favourite musicals, enjoying themselves while raising money to put a roof on their new building. Sounds like a fun evening! April’s lunchtime recital at St Martin’s Church will be given by Daniel Collins, who is a countertenor and a member of the distinguished group of singers, The Sixteen. Watermill Jazz meets each Tuesday. This month’s programme is: a tribute to Bobby Wellins (4th), Patricia Barber (11th), and the Scott Hamilton quartet (18th). Please note there will be no concert on 25th as the usual venue is unavailable.

A Celebration of Weddings in Words and Music 7.30pm on Saturday 22nd April St Michael's Church, Betchworth, Surrey The concert will consist of familiar music played at weddings together with some poems and readings suitable for weddings. There will also be some choir items. So if you are planning a wedding or would like to hear again the music that might have been played at your wedding and to hear some old, some new and some humorous readings, then this is the evening for you. Tickets £12.00 to include a glass of wine Full details call: 01737 832806 29

EASTER AT ST JOHN’S UNPACKED A quick glance at the Calendar will give you a good indication of “What’s On” during Holy Week and Easter – but might lead you to ask what that particular service is all about… So here is a summary of what is planned, for you to make an informed decision about which services to attend. Try coming to a service you haven’t attended before! However you spend Holy Week and Easter, make time to practise the presence of God – whether through a church service or not. You’ll find that Easter Day takes on a deeper significance as a result.

PALM SUNDAY 9th April 9.45am Procession to Church for 10.00am Palm Sunday Celebration Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday – the day when we remember Jesus and his followers entering Jerusalem, to the excitement of the crowds. We start the service at the school and walk to the Church. It is quite an experience to walk through the village as a church (adults and children alike), and remind ourselves of how much more emotional Jesus must have felt.

MONDAY 10th April – 8.00pm Quiet Eucharist TUESDAY 11th April – 8.00pm Service of Hope A Time to Remember and Reflect on Those We Love During Holy Week a short service is held to remember and reflect on the people in our lives who need our prayer and for those we continue to mourn and remember. We invite you, your friends and family to join us in quiet reflection, hymns and prayers, lighting a candle and considering the needs of those seeking prayer due to illness or perhaps going through difficult times, or nearing the end of their life. It can also be a time to celebrate lives that meant so much to us. The service is less than an hour long. 32

WEDNESDAY 12th April – 8.00pm Tenebrae Service A service of shadows, with candles being extinguished throughout the service as we enter deeper into Jesus’ betrayal, abandonment, and agony. Things are left unfinished, because the story isn’t over until Easter Day.

MAUNDY THURSDAY 13th April 8.00pm Eucharist of the Last Supper If you want worship which combines spiritual presence, power and pathos all in one service, then come to this. From its direct reminder of the Last Supper, through to the recalling of Jesus in the loneliness of Gethsemane – this is a deeply moving service. Nothing prepares you for Good Friday quite so well as seeing the church stripped bare in front of your eyes….

GOOD FRIDAY 14th April 10.50am Churches Together in Dorking Procession This is an essential and powerful part of Good Friday for many across our churches. The procession begins at Dorking Halls Car Park (meet at 10.50am for 11.00am start) and ends outside St Martin’s (service 11.30am or earlier). The sight of all churches walking together speaks for itself.

2.00pm Stations of the Cross You will experience a service which will touch you at many levels, from what you are seeing and hearing to the thoughts prompted in consequence.

HOLY SATURDAY 15th April 10.00am – Decorating the Church Technically this is not a service, but those people who decorate the church for Easter are showing their own reverence to God. You don’t need to be an expert in flower arranging, just someone willing to come along and take part. 33

1.00pm – 4.00pm National Trust Easter Egg Hunt and Teas at the Church with children’s activities Again not a service, but just good fun. Starting from the Church this hunt goes over the Common. Details are in the National Trust article. Teas and children’s activities will be available in the Community Building.

EASTER DAY - SUNDAY 16th April 5.30am Dawn Service, followed by breakfast For some this service is the Easter highlight! There is nothing quite like the feeling of starting worship outside the church, in the last few minutes of darkness and then seeing the light of dawn fill the church. It’s extraordinary and if you’re wondering why we do it, it is because John’s Gospel reminds us that Mary Magdalene visited the tomb of Jesus in darkness (and, of course, found it empty) but then encountered him in the garden after the dawn. So this service welcomes Easter Day by taking us from darkness to light, finishing with breakfast (your first hot cross bun of the day!).

8.00am Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer) If you enjoy the traditional Prayer Book service, or if you are planning to head off to spend the day elsewhere, this 8am service is for you.

10.00am Easter Celebration Eucharist Our main celebration of the day! All ages welcome! Come and join us, to celebrate the Resurrection with joy! Whatever your choice of service(s), we look forward to seeing you over Holy Week and Easter.

Archivist Jane Le Cluse gives our latest evening Gallery Talk, telling about life in a small medieval village in the 11th to 14th centuries. At Dorking Museum, 7.00pm, doors open 6.30pm, entry £5 on the door, includes a glass of Prosecco. Our current special exhibition, ‘Medieval Betchworth’ continues to intrigue visitors with its portrayal of everyday village life and the more dramatic events that impacted on the villagers. HOLMWOOD WI MEMBERS of Holmwood WI welcomed more than 18 guests as delegates from the Leith Hill Group of WIs joined us for the Group’s annual meeting. “It was lovely to see so many WI members enjoying each other’s company as they filled the village hall in South Holmwood last Wednesday,” said Holmwood secretary, Maureen Lewington. During the afternoon we heard reports from group convenor Isobel Stanton, WI Adviser Ann Lillywhite and each WI – Abinger Common and Wotton, Capel, Dorking Hens, Dorking Ranmore, Newdigate, Reigate Evening and committee member Valerie Homewood from Holmwood. What a lot of different sub-groups there are to join, charity fundraising to take part in, numerous outings, speakers and pub lunches. What busy ladies we all are! The highlight was Galit Mersand demonstrating with narrative, dance and comedy “The effects of belly dancing on women’s lives”. For more than an hour we were engrossed in the language of belly dancing and were even able to learn a few moves ourselves. The afternoon concluded with a traditional Holmwood WI Afternoon Tea which everyone tucked into, while catching up with old friends and making new ones. If you would like to join us at Holmwood WI contact our secretary, Maureen Lewington, on 01306 882057 or email maureen.lewington@btinternet.com you will be ensured of a warm welcome.

AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT February /March FA Cup history was made on Saturday 18th February when thanks to an 89th minute header Lincoln beat Burnley by one goal to nil to become the first non-league side since 1914 to reach the FA Cup quarter finals. Unfortunately their dreams came to an end when they were drawn against Arsenal who scored five goals against them in the second half. National League side Sutton United’s amazing run in the FA Cup also came to an end when Arsenal beat them two goals to one on Monday 20th February. Sutton were no means outclassed and Arsenal’s manager, Arsene Wenger, was full of praise for the way they performed. I enjoyed the Birmingham Grand Prix indoor athletics over the weekend 18th / 19th February. Laura Muir was in record breaking form winning the 1000m in 2 mins 31.93 secs but Mo Farah stole the show, holding off Albert Rop of Bahrein, to run the 5000m in 13 mins 09.16 secs. This was the final race of his indoor career. Richard Kilty finished third in the 60 m. Great Britain did remarkably well in the European Indoor Athletic Championships in Belgrade over the weekend 3rd - 5th March, 43

achieving 2nd place in the medals table with 5 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medals. The outstanding performer was Laura Muir who won both the 1500m and 3000m, the latter in a record time. Other gold medal winners were Andrew Pozzi (60m hurdles), Asher Philip (women’s 60m) and Richard Kilty (men’s 60m). The heavyweight boxing encounter between David Haye and Tony Bellow was concluded when David Haye’s corner threw in the towel in the 11th round. Haye had fought from the 5th round with a damaged Achilles and had taken quite a beating. Following his disgusting remarks on what he was going to do to Bellow before the fight, his courage during the fight went a long way to redeem his reputation. In the penultimate weekend of the Six Nation’s Rugby Football tournament 10/11th March a rampant England side produced an outstanding performance to beat Scotland by 61 points to 21 to claim the Six Nations trophy with a game to spare. Scotland’s Captain John Barclay said his side was “useless “. Ireland’s defeat by Wales ended their chance of claiming the Championship. Italy lost again in their game against France and it looks like the ‘wooden spoon’ for them. On 18th March a shaky England lost to Ireland in their final game of the Six Nations. For Eddie Jones, their coach, it was his first defeat since he took over and England’s dream of achieving the coveted Grand Slam died. Ireland had too much fire for an England team who were well short of their best. France narrowly beat Wales and Italy lost to Scotland. British cycling has once again been rocked by doping allegations when evidence given in front of MPs revealed that proper records of the prescription drugs administered to riders had not been kept. This puts the fact that British cyclists are the cleanest in the sport in doubt.

HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk This morning I found a new addition to my car. Twigs. On the roof. Strange, thought I, as I reached over and removed them. There are plenty of trees around but not near the car. So how did they get there? The noise coming from a neighbouring chimney pot answered my question. Crows. As always, they much prefer blocking up chimneys to nesting in a tree. This twiggy mouthful, or should I say ‘beakful’, never made it that far and had been unceremoniously dumped. We do have a large kite that enjoys snacking on smaller flying dinners, so maybe he was a bit peckish and losing nesting material was preferable to being eaten. At least it’s not our chimney they are in. It is lovely seeing and hearing the birds so busy, a sure sign that winter is fast becoming a distant memory and that summer is on her way. My incubator is quietly working away at the moment, nurturing twenty eggs that will hopefully hatch in to healthy chicks ready for the warmer days. Egg boxes come in very handy for chitting the seed potatoes; they sit perfectly in the trays. Until we need them for eggs, then it’s a free for all on the dining table, utilising just about anything that looks potato friendly. Which of course results in lap dinners for the duration, because you can’t disturb the potatoes, can you? The numerous seed trays are bursting into life too. Most of them have labels. Some don’t. They did, at the beginning, but I expect they have been taken by the same strain of beastie that steals socks from the washing machine…..Ah well, nothing like a guessing game in the potting shed. A couple of packets were supposed to be very tricky to get going. Hard to cultivate, expect a small amount of success only…… Nobody told that to the seeds. There are hundreds of them sprouting. Hundreds. A dozen or so was all I expected but no. It’s like a mini invasion of triffids, only a bit smaller. How is your growing going? Hopefully you have lots of things 48

coming up and getting bigger? It’s not that long until the Summer Show. It may feel a long way away but preparations are well underway and we will need your entries! A full marquee is a joy to behold, so let’s hope it’s a bumper year. The hedgerows are really greening up now, the verges and roundabouts have been a riot of early colour with crocus and daffodils, and the pond rushes are taking off in all their various locations. Fourwents Pond is slowly returning to its former glory after the recent major renovation works. Did you know it was last dredged in 1999? Could someone please explain where on earth those eighteen intervening years have gone?? I was sure they only did it five or six years ago….. The fourteen tonne digger has been the highlight of the works as far as our son is concerned. Well it would be, wouldn’t it? I was more interested in how many invasive species came out of the pond. Lots of American Signal Crayfish were in there; they are decimating our native species unfortunately. The pair of Cayuga ducks that were left there don’t eat them although they are partial to baby fish. Unlike the Mallards, they don’t fly, hence why they stayed all the time the renovations were going on. Hopefully it won’t be long before we can once again enjoy Fourwents in all her glory. For now, we can make sure our young plants are thriving (and protected from the inevitable late frosts of course). If you find yourself at a loose end having potted up everything you could find, why not take a minute to renew your VPA membership? Have a look at the website: holmwoodvpa.co.uk where you will find all the details you need. It is packed with other information too, from upcoming events, to details of previous shows, a photo gallery……. Anyone for a triffid??

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust April 2017 News from the Common AGM & Spring Meeting If there is one action that we should all take to help with protecting our local wildlife it is to add Wildlife Aid's emergency helpline number - 09061 800132 – to the phonebook on your mobile. So said Dr Mike Berwick whilst describing the work of this local organisation whose work is so relevant to our interests in protecting and preserving the wildlife of Holmwood Common and indeed, throughout Surrey and elsewhere. Mike's talk was the highlight of our Spring Meeting and used case histories of many animals – from birds to badgers and deer to dormice – to illustrate the vital work of the Wildlife Aid Foundation. The usual business within the AGM was completed quickly: Michael Howard and David Lloyd were re-appointed as Honorary Treasurer and Chairman respectively; Diana Lindon was re-elected as a committee member; and Jacqui Johnston was confirmed as a full member of the Friends' committee. In his Chairman's report David reminded members of the events held in 2016, including the £700 raised for Children in Need by the Friends' Countryfile Ramble. Another busy schedule of events for 2017 was outlined including support for the North Holmwood Village Day in September. If you are not already a member then why not join the Friends, receive the monthly newsletter and enjoy free attendance at the majority of events throughout 2017. See below for how to join. Rob Adam reported on the National Trust's work programme including both the restoration of Fourwents Pond and the installation of the Natural Play Area. In recognition of their important work and as thanks for Mike's talk, the Friends made a donation to the Wildlife Aid Foundation and 50

members were generous in contributing a further £67 to assist WAF following the recent theft of important equipment from their Leatherhead headquarters. Teddy Bear's Picnic to celebrate opening of Natural Play Area If all goes to plan then the installation of the Natural Play Area on the old cricket pitch at North Holmwood will be completed during April. To celebrate the opening of the Play Area we are planning an afternoon of entertainment on Sunday 14th May and we hope that you will make a note of this date and come along with children and grand-children to join our celebrations. Arts & crafts stalls are planned along with a Teddy Bear's Picnic. More details next month. Don't get frustrated ... do something! We recently saw a posting on Facebook that expressed frustration at “what they are doing to the Common”. Nothing specific and not clear who “they” are. Was it a reference to the vandals that damaged the signpost at the Viewpoint? Or the people who leave dog-poo bags hanging in trees? Or those who toss their beer cans into the undergrowth? We can only suggest that a good way to help tackle these problems is to join the Friends and help by reporting these incidents to us, or to assist as a National Trust Volunteer ... or both! Ranger Rob's Report I’ve received some funding to allow us to erect some simple benches around the Common. The materials, from a tree felled on Holmwood last year, are stored and drying in our Leith Hill Workshop and so if people have an idea of where they may like a bench please get in touch with myself or the Friends. A Seasonal Reminder As we head into Spring many birds are nesting now and although we don’t have classic ground-nesting birds such as Woodcock and Nightjars, we do have several common species such as blackbirds and wrens which can nest close to the ground. Plus deer will be producing young in May. So please keep your dogs under close control for a few weeks. Many thanks. Rob Adam, Ranger, Holmwood Common 51
