Editorial June 2013 It’s hard to believe it’s (almost) June already. If only the weather would catch up with that realisation. Wonderful as it is to see the common lush and green, a day or two of warm dry weather around, say, the first of the month would be appreciated, especially given all the hard work of those organising the Garden Party at Culver. The garden party has become a greatly anticipated (in our house!) annual event in the village. It is a grand day out, with plenty of cake, stalls, plants, cake, ploughman’s lunches, tombola, and cake. Oh, and it raises funds for the new Community Building appeal. With even more cake in mind, Teas on the Lawn return for the Summer on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd June. The knitted items created by KnitOnePurlOneSaveOne are now being taken to the Romanian Aid Foundation in Horley. On the 4th June there will be a guest speaker at their meeting, talking about the work of the Romanian Aid Foundation. There will be tea and cakes to follow. Kirsten Wightwick Don’t forget if you are sending in material for the magazine that our next edition covers events in July and August. We have received more contributions this month than we have been able to include, but we will try to get some of them in next time.

Dear friends, Just before writing this letter we celebrated the feast of Pentecost, or Whit Sun, in church, that great feast when we remember Jesus’ closest friends receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, quite literally the gift of God within themselves. They were transformed, to do God’s work, which ultimately led to this church of St John’s being built. I mention this because we have an important event coming up during June. On the evening of Sunday 9th June, Bishop Christopher Herbert (the retired Bishop of St Albans, who helps Bishops Christopher and Ian in this diocese) will be coming to St John’s for a 5

service of Confirmation, the first time for some years we have had a Confirmation service at St John’s. At Confirmation, those being confirmed are able to make afresh the promises which were made (often by their parents and godparents) at their baptism. The bishop then says, amongst other things, “God has called you by name and made you his own. Confirm, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit.” In being confirmed, each person receives again the Holy Spirit – which can absolutely transform lives. It is exciting to think that St John’s is hosting the Confirmation service, but it is more exciting to remember that the service is happening because members of our worshipping community want to be confirmed. It is because members of our community want to make afresh their baptism promises and commit themselves again as Christians. The Church spread through word of mouth, by people telling others about God, about Jesus, about the Holy Spirit, about the difference it makes in our lives – by people telling others that their lives have been transformed by coming to Christ. That started with the Apostles, Jesus’ closest followers, and continues here in this parish today. The world 2000 years ago was transformed by the Christian Faith, transformed by God’s work through the early Christians. The world, here and now, can also be transformed by God’s redeeming work through us – and through those who come to Christ in the future. As we prepare for the Confirmation, I pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our community, and in our lives. Maybe you could join me in this. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart 6

Summary of the PCC meeting held on14 May 2013 This was the first meeting of the new PCC since the APCM. Stuart welcomed Margaret Teale as a newly elected member and Roger Coombes and Michael Dudgeon, who were co-oted. This was also Graham Phillips’ first meeting as an elected member, since he had previously been an ex-officio one. The new parish website is now live, but needs further work to develop it. The sermons are now being recorded and added to it. Rita’s tableau of the Last Supper would be displayed soon in church. Jim Edwards is arranging for a roofer to examine the leak and Graham is trying to get in contact with a stone mason to repair the damaged buttress. Lynn Jennings presented the treasurer’s report. Jane Schofield was arranging a meeting for the following week to discuss fund raising events and grant applications. Stuart reported that he was exploring the possibility of a service in Chart Downs, awaiting approval of the Confirmation service for 9th June and discussing another joint service with the Harvest Church. St Johns’ School have appointed a new Headteacher for September and the breakfast club is flourishing. The members present each completed a “Parish health check” form and discussed the answers at length. We then considered: The advantages and disadvantages of chairs instead of pews. Establishing a worship committee and looking at hymns. Reintroducing Sacred Space services. A hymn singing afternoon. The advantages and disadvantages of a screen and projector. A regular afternoon home group. The next PCC meeting will be on Tuesday 2nd July. 12

FUNDS The total raised for the Community Building Appeal now stands at £220,000. We need to raise at least £40,000 more before we can take out an affordable loan for a further £40,000 and thus achieve the estimated £300,000 design and build cost; this will also satisfy the Chancellor of the diocese that we can afford to carry out the project and allow us to obtain formal permission from the diocese.

Bishop Christopher’s message from the AnglicanRoman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 6th May 2013 Greetings from Rio and the City of God! Some of you may remember the award winning film called The City of God (2002/3), about a favela or shanty town on the outskirts of Rio which some years ago was a no-go area controlled violently by drug gangs with a high incidence of murder and gang warfare. This year in Rio I am co-chairing a meeting of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission. We continue to work on decision-making within our churches, local and global, especially in ethical questions. Not irrelevant subjects in relation to contemporary disputes in the Church of England. But any discussion about the local church must be rooted in the real local church. So we visited the Cidade de Deus (City of God) now ‘pacified’ by community policing but teeming with 60-80,000 people and increasing by 30% a year. In the City of God there are a few Pentecostal churches, but also at the heart of the community are an Anglican and a Roman Catholic priest and their two parishes. They work together as a sacrament of the Kingdom of God. We were welcomed by smiles, greetings and warmth in communities where only a few years ago no one could do anything without the say of the drug barons. We saw work with the elderly and community organisations – including a community bank, children’s football (what else in Brazil with the World Cup?) and the community policing. We prayed ecumenical vespers with both priests and members of both parishes in the Anglican Church. It has a mural depicting the story of the City of God. The Rio favelas had their origins when the slaves were freed in Brazil in the late 19th Century (at the prompting of the Papacy). Freed slaves moved out of the then city to the countryside.

20

The City of God was originally built for a tiny fraction of the present number of its inhabitants when the government of Rio wanted to move the poor out of city centre. This was done by setting fire to their homes. Today, in spite of the past, and served by local people and the church, it is a city of hope. ARCIC’s talk of the church was well grounded in the City of God. +Christopher Guildford

Surrey Churches Ride & Stride Saturday 14th September 2013 Would you like to have a fun day exploring churches in any area you choose and raise money for your own church and the Surrey Churches Preservation Trust at the same time? Most counties in England hold an annual Ride & Stride, on the second Saturday in September, (to coincide with the Heritage Open Days,) to raise money for the restoration and repair of buildings for Christian worship. The idea is that cyclists and walkers are given a list of churches and chapels in the area of their choice. They map out their own route to pedal or walk, having asked their friends and relations, or fellow members of their churches, to sponsor them. The money collected is divided into two. Half the money goes to the church or chapel of the cyclist's or walker's choice and the other half is retained by the Surrey Churches Preservation Trust for distribution to churches in need. In the dozen years that the Ride & Stride has been running in Surrey over ÂŁ250,000 has been raised. The umbrella organisation for our county is the Surrey Churches Preservation Trust whose trustees are from most Christian denominations. Grants are given out twice a year for deserving applications. Encouragement to take part in Ride & Stride is provided by the SCPT County Organiser and distributed by Area Organisers to individual churches and chapels across Surrey. The Area Organisers support the Church Organisers by providing them with all the necessary paperwork and any guidance they need. Ride & Stride is a fun way to spend time on a pleasant September Saturday while at the same time supporting a worthy cause. Why not make up a group and join in this year! Supporters who prefer not to 'ride or stride', please consider sponsoring volunteers involved in this important event. For more information contact: www.surreychurchespreservationtrust.org/

COMPUTER SCAM A couple of months ago we included details of frauds committed by people telephoning claiming to know that “there is something wrong with your computer”. While preparing this edition I received a call claiming to be from “Windows Technical Department” and that the “Windows main server” was showing that my computer was close to failing because of errors. I assume that the caller wanted to access my computer, but we did not get that far. Do not give anyone calling in this way remote access – they will probably ask for payment to fix a problem that they have introduced or try to take information from your computer and use it fraudulently. My phone had displayed “Out of area” for the caller, so be particularly careful with calls showing this instead of a real number. Jim Edwards 25

After a hard season’s rehearsing and singing, the summer concert is often the occasion for some more relaxed music-making. Dorking Choral Society is holding its summer concert in the glorious gardens of Coverwood Lakes at Ewhurst. They will be singing favourite opera choruses, including Verdi and Bizet, with further items from two solo singers, and you can enjoy a picnic afterwards by one of the beautiful lakes. Mickleham Choral Society has a light-hearted concert, taking as its theme the Moulin Rouge. Epsom Choral Society’s music includes Elgar’s From the Bavarian Highlands. Leatherhead Choral Society will sing Zimbe by Alexander L’Estrange. This is an exciting work

based on African songs - both jazzy and deeply moving; it is great fun to listen to and to sing. Brockham Choral Society presents a large-scale concert featuring Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, which is based on racy mediaeval texts concerning life and fate, the joy of spring, and the pleasures of wine and love! It will be performed with soloists, dancers and orchestra. Also on the programme is Constant Lambert’s jazzinspired masterpiece The Rio Grande. Buckland and Betchworth Choral Society, together with orchestra, presents a summer concert including Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto, the mighty Emperor, in which the soloist will be Anna Tetauya. The Ladybirds Choir, directed from the piano by Helena Twentyman, will be giving a concert in aid of the Brigitte Trust, a local charity. The musical programme is varied, including British folksongs, items from the Beatles and The Sound of Music, and a piece written for Queen Victoria by the Welsh harpist John Thomas. The London Welsh Male Voice Choir visits Dorking to sing a programme ranging from operatic choruses to well-loved Welsh hymns. And in the delightful setting of Woodhouse, near Holmbury St Mary, pianist Omri Epstein will play the 24 preludes of Chopin and also give a profile of the 19th-century virtuoso pianist and composer Charles-Valentin Alkan. And finally, Watermill Jazz meets as usual every Thursday evening at the Friends Life social club. This month’s performers are: the Adrian Fry quintet (6th), Django Bates (13th), Neon (20th) and the Clark Tracey quintet (27th).

AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT April / May Perhaps it’s the beauty of the golf course that makes the Augusta Masters such compulsive viewing. However what will remain in the memory of the 77th Masters that finished in a breathtaking play-off on Sunday, 14th April, was the sportsmanship of Argentinean Angel Cabrera as he wrapped his arms around Australian Adam Scott who narrowly defeated him. There was little sportsmanship shown by the Newcastle football fans as they went on the rampage in the city following their team losing to Sunderland three goals to nil. Police were pelted with bottles and stones leaving many injured. These shocking scenes came 24 hours after Millwall fans began fighting during the second half of their team’s defeat by Wigan in the semi-final of the FA Cup. This kind of behaviour spoils the enjoyment of our national game and it’s about time the authorities stamped it out. Sir Chris Hoy confirmed he had decided to retire on Thursday 18th April. He said, “I can walk away at the top level without any lingering regrets. When I think of how cycling was when I started and then think where it is now, it’s been a hell of a ride.” David Beckham has also announced his retirement from professional football. FA chairman David Bernstein said, “When you look at his playing and work for England, nobody would accuse him of being unpatriotic and not giving everything for his country. He will be quite a loss to the game.” Disgraced trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni was banned for eight years for giving anabolic steroids to fifteen horses in the Godolphin stables. The stables are owned by Sheik Mohammed Al Maktoum of Dubai who was said to be mortified when the news came out. It was also a huge shock to the people of the town of Newmarket who depend on the Godolphin Stables for their livelihood.

British boxer Amir Khan had to survive another battering before he managed to secure a win over Mexican Julio Diez. Khan is still taking too many heavy hits and there has to be a limit to how much punishment he can take, but there is no doubt he is an exciting boxer to watch. The magic of the FA Cup Final produced a fairy tale ending for Wigan when they scored a goal in the 90th minute to defeat Manchester City one goal to nil. This was the biggest shock in Cup Final history for a quarter of a century. Just 72 hours later the magic disappeared when Wigan were crushed four goals to one by Arsenal to end any hopes of a reprieve from being relegated to the Championship League with Reading and Queens Park Rangers. On Sunday 12th May Sir Alex Ferguson attended Old Trafford for the last time as manager of Manchester United. His final game at home ended with a win over Swansea two goals to one. He then had a great send-off when he emerged to receive the Premier League Trophy for the thirteenth time, followed by leading his players on a final lap of honour. He has had a remarkable 27 years as manager of Manchester United winning 894 games, with 337 games drawn and 267 games lost. He will be replaced by Everton’s manager, David Moyes, another Glaswegian. The Rugby Lions coach Warren Gatland said it was a tough decision to leave England’s captain, Chris Robshaw, out of the forthcoming British Lions tour to Australia. “He’s got to consider himself unlucky”. Sam Warburton has been chosen as captain to become the youngest Welshman to lead a Lions touring party. It’s hard to understand why Robshaw hasn’t been included in the squad as he always has been a dominating player in every game that has appeared on television.

THE BLACKBROOK BOMBER Dorking Museum and the National Trust are proud to present this exciting new Exhibition. The Exhibition tells the story of the Junkers Ju 88 that was shot down and crashed on Blackbrook near Dorking on March 14th 1944. The plane remained where it fell for many years. Several digs were organised to remove items from the plane. In 2012, the National Trust mounted a dig to try and remove everything that was left of the plane. Using oral histories, photographs and artefacts lent to us by local people, we have pieced together biographies of the German aircrew, and of the British crew that shot the Junkers down, and of the plane itself – tracing its activity from manufacture in 1942 throughout its working life. The exhibition will combine all new explanatory panels, original artefacts from the crash site and models of the aircraft. The exhibition runs from 3rd May – 28th August 2013. We hope you will come and visit us! We are now open every Thursday from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. On Friday and Saturday we will continue to be open from 10.00am to 4.00pm and we have added a Sunday afternoon opening from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. Please Visit us as: The Old Foundry, 62 West Street, Dorking, RH4 1BS Tel: 01306 876591 (Answerphone) Website: www.dorkingmuseum.org.uk

Holmwood WI Holmwood WI had an interesting meeting in May. Valerie Homewood gave a detailed explanation about WI concerns about the state of high street shopping in Britain. This is the subject of the WI resolution to be debated at the AGM in Cardiff in June. Valerie explained about the rising costs for the shop keepers at a time of reduced sales. Although most of us do support our shops in Dorking, we had to admit that the younger members of our families have grown up to buy on line and are not likely to change. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the Cardiff meeting. We did vote to give our WI group representative the discretion to vary the vote if necessary. Usually there is a choice of resolution but not this year. This serious discussion was followed by a talk from Cath Johnson, one of our fellow members. This was entitled, “Humour in Uniform” and she spoke about the days of being a police lady on the beat in London in the sixties. The only way to get fellow police help was via a Tardis police box or with a whistle. Crowd control for even a happy crowd at Marty Wilde’s wedding was not easy, and walking the beat in winter was very cold (warmed by carrying hot chestnuts in her pocket). Her work included sorting out a prostitute in court watched by Royalty and trying to free ladies stuck in lavatories. The meths drinkers were one of the worst problems. Her photos and newspaper coverage showed her as a tiny, dapper, pretty blonde. Her story showed how determined she was to be in on the action. The majority had to leave the force when they got married and one of her last actions was involved in the arrest of Ronnie Kray. Cath is able to see the funny side of most events. On 5th June, we have a talk from the “Born Free Foundation”. 38

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust June 2013

News from the Common Ranger’s Report Spring finally arrived in a bit of a rush. I was away for a week’s holiday at the end of April and tree buds were just starting to break. When I returned most trees were out in full leaf! This time of year is so uplifting with new, vigorous green growth, butterflies, bees and other colourful insects that haven’t been seen for a few months and warmer weather encouraging people to visit the Common. When you are out and about, look out for the Orange Tip butterfly (Anthocharis cardamines). Males are more noticeable than females due to the highly visible orange wing tips. It is believed that the colour is a warning indicating that the butterfly is not particularly palatable to predators – a result of mustard oils that have accumulated in the body from the caterpillars eating Wild Garlic and Hedge Mustard plants amongst others. When the female is laying eggs she initially locates a plant by sight then lands and tastes it with her feet. If the plant is suitable a single egg is laid as the larvae are cannibalistic. As a result, it is uncommon to find more than one egg per plant and it is believed that the female is able to detect eggs that have already been laid. Rob.

Circular Trail About twenty people joined members of the Circular Trail Working Group on a walk of the planned circular trail on 21st April. The weather was great and the approximately 6 kilometre circular walk took about two hours with a number of stops to discuss the route and its planning. If you were unable to make this walk, have questions to ask or would like a map of the circular trail route please email fohc.info@gmail.com. 43

St John’s CofE Community School and Nursery

Another busy half term, as we approach another holiday!! Our Year 5 High Five Netball team had a great time at the Dorking Schools tournament held in the Dome at the Priory School recently. Their energy and enthusiasm for the game were most impressive and the parents who supported the girls said that they did the school proud. Another success was the school contribution to the Mole Valley Music Festival held at the Dorking Halls. Not only did our choir sing their hearts, we had one child selected for the “elite choir and another child played a violin solo to the packed auditorium. A big, proud moment for staff and parents alike, and many thanks to Mrs Mann who had worked very hard to get the choir to such a high standard. Our usual class assemblies continue on Friday morning, giving the classes an opportunity for the children to share what they are learning with the mums and dads, nans and granddads, and interested family members! Our best news this month is that a new head teacher has been appointed to lead our school when it becomes an Academy in the next academic year. Miss Donna Wardell knows the school well and is very excited about her new post. The school is also eagerly awaiting its first substantive headteacher as an academy. Jenny Crook

As we move further into the summer term everyone at Pre School is looking forward to spending more time in the outdoor area (weather permitting, all our fingers and toes are crossed!) The children are working hard learning to pedal trikes and bikes and practice some ball skills. As our theme of Living and Growing continues the children have been planting sunflower seeds and wondering whose will grow the tallest; we will have to wait and see! We have also been looking at the life cycle of the butterfly and the children have produced some beautiful butterflies, learning simple symmetry in the process. The children are also observing how a frog changes and grows. The afternoon sessions have given our oldest children plenty of outdoor time which the children have enjoyed. They have been out exploring the local environment and from this have produced simple maps to help them to recall where they walked and what they discovered. We welcomed our newest member of staff, Kate, last month and we are also pleased to have Serena back. She has been much missed. We are still collecting vouchers from Sainsbury’s and Nestle Box Tops. Thank you for supporting these ventures; they really do make a difference to the resources we can purchase. We have just received £12 towards new books from Nestle and we will keep you updated as to the equipment we receive through Sainsbury’s. 50

HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION Summer Show Weekend, Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July 2013 Saturday 13th – Summer Show (1-4pm) and Barn Dance (8pm) Sunday 14th – Fun Dog Show (1.30-4.30pm) followed by Songs of Praise (5.15pm) It’s all very well having a bit of a laugh, perhaps with a burger in one hand and a glass of Pimms in the other, or even stroking a fluffy lamb whilst having your face painted, but I think it’s time, now, we all started taking the VPA Summer Show weekend a bit more seriously. Villagers who like to compete in the Grand Marquee already appreciate the magnitude of what is at stake, where the failure to brush the last molecules of soil from the roots of a lettuce, or the slight under-accessorisation of a floral arrangement, can be the school-boy-error between triumphant glory and crushing defeat. (There is three quid up for grabs after all). But the afternoon showgoers, who have felt none of the quivering tension of the morning, can still demonstrate their commitment to the Summer Show by mounting a vigorous challenge in the prestigious Tug of War event. With this in mind I consulted the Tug of War Association’s Official Rules, (22 pages no less!), so we can all prepare for serious competition. It seems the key points are: 1) No leaning, propping or illegal gripping; 2) No more than six minutes between pulls; and 3) No transparent shorts. Unfortunately, last year’s downpour meant the Tug of War had to be abandoned, for fear it would turn into a mud wrestling contest. Now I wonder if I can find the Official Rules for that, just in case…. VPA members have, by now, received a copy of the Summer Show schedule of classes, and copies are available to non-members by 52

contacting Show Secretary Peta Rackett (pockle@tiscali.co.uk) or any of the other members of the committee. So this year, why not have a go yourself? Anyone can enter, and it is, after all, just a bit of fun! For Barn Dance tickets, still just £10 each, please contact John Thom (j10rmt@tiscali.co.uk), or any of the committee. And most important of all, gather family and friends together to simply come along and enjoy the Summer Show afternoon – but do make sure they’ll be able to take the strain, won’t you. Ros Treliving

SHEEP & GOATS

JUSTICE Every time there is a story about the law and justice in the newspapers or on television they always use the same symbol to show justice – a woman wearing a blindfold over her eyes, holding a set of scales in one hand and a sword in the other. The blindfold is there to show that nothing affects the decision except the scales. The scales show that justice is only right when both sides weigh the same and that all are equal before the law. The sword is there to show that the good are protected and the wicked punished. All through Jesus’ teaching is the idea of judgement – that we all shall stand before the throne of God and answer for what we have done. And when we do, the judge will be Jesus because he lived on earth as we do. St Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 25, verses 31 to 46 tells us about this judgment. Will you be a sheep or a goat?

The answers to these are all animals in the Bible. Answers below. 1 400 young men escaped on these (1 Samuel 30:17). 2 They eat under the table (Mark 7:28). 3 They live in the high mountains (Psalm 104:18). 4 One was lost and 99 were safe (Luke 15:6). 5 Benaiah killed this animal in a pit on a snowy day (1 Chronicles 11:22). 6 There were four of them, coloured white, red, black and pale green (Revelation 6:1-8). 7 Jesus rode this into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:21). 8 Their dung is used to bake bread (Ezekiel 4:15). What did the cloned sheep say to the other sheep? I am ewe.

Answers: 1.camels 2.dogs 3.goats 4.sheep 5.lion 6.horses 7.donkey 8.cow
