EVENT REPORT COHORT 2, Classroom Culture Practices -INSTITUTE 22nd – 23rd November 2016 RAEBARELI Introduction The institute for the upcoming term (Nov’16-Jan’17) was conducted at DIET Raebareli on the 22nd and 23rd of November 2016. As most of the officials, ABRC’s and teachers were busy with the preparation for upcoming elections, many of them being assigned block duties, we had to make some tweaks in the existing agenda and conduct the institute for 2 days instead of pre decided 3 days. Despite the duration being shortened, with the cooperation of our education leaders and ABRC’s we were able to conduct each intended activity of the 3 day agenda into 2 days.

Day 1 Agenda for the day  Reflection and celebration of the previous term  Introduction of the material  Demonstration and discussion on network meeting 5  Preparation of Education Leaders for Demo of Meeting 6 and 7 on day 2 Session 1 – Welcome and Invocation The institute began on a high note with two of our BEOs, Mr Vishwanath Prajapati, Dalmau Block and Mr Ramkrishna Kashyap, Harchandrapur Block present at the start of the event. Both the BEO’s have joined their respective blocks in last term and it was Report - Classroom Culture Practices Institute 22nd – 23rd November 2016 RAEBARELI

encouraging for the Education Leaders to see their new BEO’s taking interest in the program by ensuring personal presence. This is also important from our point of view as the increased involvement of the Block officials is the first step towards better embedding of the program. Raebareli team welcomed the participants by thanking the officials and Education Leaders for their presence and continuous support to the program. Session 2 – Reflection- activity (The Learning River) Taking the session further we started with a reflection activity where all the participants were divided into groups of 5 and each group was given a chart paper and sketch pen to note down the high points and the challenges in the previous term. The groups were then asked to illustrate their journey in the STiR program by sketching it in a form of river with highpoints represented by the crests and the challenges being represented by troughs. 1 member from each team was then asked to present their illustrations to all the groups explaining the challenges and the steps taken to overcome them. This activity was chosen as it involves reflection, discussion, creative work as well as presentation skills. It saw active participation from all the Education Leaders and ABRC’s present. Sweet and sour moments of the program’s 1 1/2 year journey were shared with everyone. This activity served as a very suitable precursor of the things to come. Session 3 – Introduction of the upcoming Term and material The post lunch session started with introduction to the upcoming term and revisiting all the principles of the Classroom Culture Practice term. An overview about the principles to be covered in the upcoming term was provided each followed by a discussion on the relevance and applicability of these principle in the classrooms. This was done to ensure an agreement within all the education leaders that these principles are important and hence need to be implemented in the class rooms and will lead to improvement in the learning outcomes of the students. The program material (the Education Leader’s handbook and Network Teacher’s Portfolios) was then introduced giving time to each education leader to go through the material and seek any clarifications if required. Session 4 – Network Meeting 5 As it was decided that the Demo for Meeting 6 and 7 will be done by the education leaders we decided to change the format of meeting 5 this time as we felt that having a discussion on the meetings in smaller groups instead of a demo will lay a better background for upcoming meetings as well as give us a fair idea about the perception of the education leaders regarding the meetings. Hence, all the participants were divided into 3 groups, the 1st group consisted of all the SIEF (Co-Creation) networks and the discussion was facilitated by Manish ji. The 2nd and 3rd groups were facilitated by Gopal and Gunjjan respectively. In the groups each part of the meeting 5 was read out by one of the group members followed by discussion based on the following parameters (objective, activities, sessions, time allocated for each activity, closure and follow up).

We had a really fruitful discussion with healthy participation, we observed that Education leaders were more open in smaller groups and were able to lay down their doubts and concern in a better way. Even from the facilitation point of view we found we could get better understanding of the thought process of our education leaders and we could assist them better. Once all the groups were done with Meeting 5, we did a brief discussion on the objectives of meeting 6 and 7. We then asked all the education leaders to go through the content for meeting 6 & 7 and come prepared on day two for the demo. With this discussion we closed the day 1 with attendance and validation of the current teacher’s list by each Education Leader. In total 35 Education Leaders out of 39 were present, with all 6 ABRC’s and 2 of the BEO’s on the day one.

Day 2 Agenda for the day  Revision of the discussion on day 1 (Meeting 5)  Demonstration and discussion on network meeting 6 & 7  Handing over of program materials All the participants were welcomed on the day 2 and a quick revision for meeting 5 was done covering the objective and feedback of the meeting. All the attendees were then handed over small chit of paper with each of them writing down their names on the chits. The chits were then put in a basket, to be drawn randomly. Each name drawn was assigned a session to conduct in the Meeting 6 or 7. After all the sessions were allocated, the teachers were given 30 minutes to prepare for their sessions. The sessions were then delivered by the chosen Education Leaders, each session was followed by a feedback and Q&A session where STiR team and the other teachers provided feedback on the way the session was delivered, giving in suggestions as well. Meeting 6 concluded by Lunch time. Meeting 7 started in the post lunch session on the same pattern and concluded by 3:30 pm. Conclusion A quick recap of all the major discussion points covered over the course of the institute was followed by collection of attendance sheets (Term 1) and validated teacher’s list. All the portfolios were then handed over to the Education leaders. We would like to thank Principal and DRG DIET Raebareli for their invaluable support in conducting the institute, the BEOs and ABRC’s of all the six blocks who supported us with permissions and presence and we would also like to thank STiR Design and Admin team for the timely availability of the program material.
