STYLE STORIES Score these fresh looks for Spring!

Text by TANYA COLLEDGE

A

fter a long, cold, and harsh winter, the thought of a new season puts a spring in my step. Tulips blooming, warmer days, and of course, beautiful BC sunshine—what could be better? A new season also means it’s time to freshen up the wardrobe. Put away those dark, chunky knits and swap them out for something lighter, brighter, and right on trend. So which trends are hot for this spring? And which ones can you start wearing today? I’ve got the scoop on the season’s biggest fashion looks and how to pull them off:

Show off those shoulders There’s no denying that the off-the-shoulder trend is one that isn’t going anywhere too soon. You can find options at every price point in almost any store. Whether you opt for a top or a dress, this trend will carry you through spring right into summer—increasing the longevity of your purchase. Try this great of-the-shoulder dress from our friends at Muse Social Fashion House; $105.

The spring tote One thing many of us tend to forget when upgrading our look for a new season is to update our purses. But when you think of it, a great bag can really make or break a good outfit. If you have great spring florals, cute wedge heels, and a big oversized boring black bag—where are people’s eyes going to go? The one that doesn’t belong—the purse. Not sure what kind of purse to pick for spring? Just think of something clean and bright. Pick a neutral colour, so it will go with everything, and keep it light. Think pastels and whites. This laser-cut detail tote from Town and Country Vintage Home in Maple Ridge is a perfect example; $59.

They also have adorable floral wallets for only $12! 10

SPRING 2017 | stimuli magazine

Loving the laser A big trend in accessories is anything laser-cut. It’s fun, looks great, and provides interesting detail to everyday pieces. A great way to incorporate this trend into your look is with footwear. Try it with a chunky heel sling back for spring for a versatile look that is sure to turn heads. Try these sling back heels from Cloverdale boutique, Love Those Shoes; $69.95.

also available in tan Seeking Camouflage A more causal trend for spring, that’s a bit different than we normally see, is camo. This season we’re seeing more muted camo prints—so they’re easier to wear and not as masculine. Pair a camo sweater or top with crisp white jeans for contrast or black leggings and booties. We promise you’ll be the opposite of invisible with this look! Try this super soft and versatile waterfall camo cardi from Betty Be Good Boutique; $44.90.

Finding florals It wouldn’t be right to talk about spring trends without talking about florals. I don’t see this so much as a trend anymore, but more of a must-have wardrobe staple. Florals can be applied to anything and be worn as big or as minimal as you wish. I personally love floral statement pieces like a great blazer or bold blouse as they not only look great, but exude confidence. Try this floral boyfriend blazer from Dynamite if you’re looking to up your floral game; $54.95.

CANADA'S 150 A Glimpse Into the Past

Text by Ronda Payne

A

natural response to celebrating a milestone like Canada’s 150th birthday is to look back and wonder how we got to where we are today. Our communities: White Rock, Surrey, Cloverdale, Langley (and beyond) certainly have their share of interesting beginnings, even if our province wasn’t included at the dawn of confederation. A modern network of roads and highways enables us to check out what’s happening in our neighbouring communities in minutes instead of the three or four hours it would have taken to travel from Surrey to Langley by horse-drawn carriage. But people did travel. Whether for a seaside vacation or to settle, there was a recognition of possibility in these communities – one that is still felt today.

WHITE ROCK

Some of those travelling to White Rock came from the far off lands of New Westminster and Vancouver. They set up summer cottages in the seaside resort that had begun to boom with the arrival of the Great

14

Northern Railway’s new route along the bay in 1909. This additional influx led to a new railway station and customs office which is in the same place today – between Marine Drive (then known as Washington Ave.) and the beach – and is continually cursed at by those seeking an elusive parking spot. In 1914, federal funds added to the landscape with the opening of the pier intended for commercial fishing and deep-sea mooring. Those dreams never came to be, thankfully. Visitors can stroll the lengthy refurbished pier without the eyesore of a worn-out cannery or more likely, the remnants of one. When the dirty 30s arrived, White Rock, despite being idyllic, wasn’t immune to the troubles. It became somewhat of a shabby seaside village with a decline in residents and visitors alike. Who had the money for delights like fresh cooked crab on the beach? But the community persisted and in 1957 pushed through to become its own entity, separate from its big sister, Surrey. SURREY If there’s a region in B.C. with an identity crisis, Surrey is definitely it. Surrey was named for being south of New Westminster across the Fraser – much like its English counterpart which sits south of Westminster across the Thames. The similarities continue with Guildford being the largest city in Surrey, the English Surrey that is, and the identity crisis goes on from there. Some autonomy was obtained in 1879 when the community incorporated creating what is now one of the most populated regions in the country. Back then, it was hard-scrabble all the way with work found in farming, forestry and other labor-intensive roles.

By 1929, Green Timbers was completely logged. Fortunately someone had the good sense to replant the central area, making it what some refer to as the birthplace of reforestation and later known as the Green Timbers Urban Forest.

Langley

LANGLEY Sure, it all started in Fort Langley with the Hudson’s Bay Company – everyone knows that story, but how did the Fort grow into the wide-spread unique community we know today? Farming was the major contributor. All those people in the Fort needed to eat, along with those expecting imports of cranberries and other B.C. goodies. Approximately 800 hectares some 10 kilometers away from the Fort’s borders became known as Langley Prairie. In time, the Fort’s purpose waned and the region shifted. Farmland changed hands from the Hudson’s Bay to locals and even the shop the trading company established in the Fort saw expansion into the small village forming outside the walls. The Fort Langley Village building boom took place from about 1909 to 1912 and took cues from England in its naming, for example, Coronation block named for King George V’s coronation. Here too, the train made a big impact and the station known and admired in stimulimag.ca | SPRING 2017

the village still stands, preserved and restored to its original 1915 beauty. The farm regions grew their own villages with Langley Prairie becoming Innes Corners as a centre of commercial activity. Similar to White Rock’s secession from Surrey, the taxpayers of Innes Corners grew increasingly annoyed at paying into the coffers they felt they received little benefit from. Debates began as early as the 1930s but it was in 1950 when four square miles were cut apart and named Langley City.

CLOVERDALE Surrey’s growth primarily began in Cloverdale. In fact, Cloverdale was a commercial and business hub with numerous trains coming and going as well as the addition of the Pacific Highway. Named because the farming region was heavily covered in clover, the community was home to not one, but two sawmills. The addition of a sizable municipal hall in 1912 as well as the region’s doctor, head of police and even an opera, made it the place to be. Continued on page 18 17

Cloverdale

No wonder then, that fun was required! The first meeting of the fair that was to become the Cloverdale Rodeo was held in early 1888. That inaugural event occurred on the first municipal hall’s grounds – the present day site of the Surrey Archives and Museum and local library. History is never all roses and rainbows, but there are always plenty of ways for communities to come together to celebrate. Canada’s birthday is one great reason to travel what we now see as short distances to take in the fun of neighbouring communities. 18

Taste of the Valley

Spring Picks & Pairings by Your Favourite Vineyards

W

ith so many amazing local vineyards in the Valley, it can be hard to decide which wine to treat yourself to. While our first suggestion would be to try and buy them all, we’ve talked to some of the Valley's winemakers about their top wine picks and recommended food pairings for the spring and summer season.

CHABERTON ESTATE WINERY 2015 Chaberton Estate Bacchus Reserve This off-dry Bacchus showcases sweet aromas of delicate white flowers with some soft lemon notes. Made for the patio, this is the perfect spring and summer sipper! PAIR WITH… Flavours of stone fruit like peach and nectarine make this wine a great accompaniment to Asian cuisine, spicy seafood dishes or even cheesecake.

BACKYARD VINEYARDS 2015 Nosey Neighbour White This delightful blend of Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Riesling offers aromas of peaches, orange rind and guava, as well as hints of pear, apple, honeydew melon and mangoes. A brilliant light gold shimmer sets the tone for this extremely aromatic, balanced, full-bodied white blend. PAIR WITH… Fresh spot prawns sautéed in lemon and butter.

TOWNSHIP 7 VINEYARDS & WINERY 2016 Sauvignon Blanc Grown in the stony soils of North Bench Oliver, this white is fresh and complex. Featuring a bouquet of passion fruit, gooseberry and fresh lime rind, it finishes with a cleansing crispness derived from stone fruit and tangy citrus. PAIR WITH… Grilled halibut and asparagus, your favourite shellfish, or as an apéritif. 20

food CANADIAN COBB SALAD WITH MAPLE MUSTARD DRESSING Salad Ingredients 2 romaine hearts, washed and chopped 3 handfuls baby spinach 125g applewood smoked bacon, cooked and crumbled 3 free-run farm eggs 250g pecan halves 1/4 cup pure maple syrup 1/3 cup sharp Canadian cheddar, shredded 1 stick celery, washed and sliced thinly 1/2 cup shredded carrot 2/3 cup grape tomatoes, halved 2/3 cup fresh BC blueberries 2 grilled chicken breasts, seasoned with salt and pepper Dressing Ingredients: 1/2 cup olive oil 1/4 cup dijon mustard 1/4 cup pure maple syrup 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup mayonnaise 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper 1-2 tbsp water Directions: Add the dressing ingredients to a jar with a lid and shake to combine. Set aside. Place the eggs in a saucepan of cold water and bring to a boil. Once the water is fully boiling, put the lid on the pan and remove from the heat. Let sit for 13 minutes, then drain the water and place the eggs in a bowl of ice water. Peel and slice when completely cooled. Heat a small skillet over medium heat. Add the pecans and maple syrup and toss to coat. Cook for 5-7 minutes, until the maple syrup is bubbling and is thickly and evenly coating the nuts. Transfer the nuts to a piece of parchment paper and let cool, breaking any clumps apart when they are cool enough to handle. Mix the salad greens together and spread over a large plate. Arrange each topping in strips across the salad greens and serve—drizzle with dressing if desired, or serve on the side. Time: 30 minutes. Serves 6. stimulimag.ca | SPRING 2017

shopping list • Succulents • Cactus soil • Small rocks for drainage • Rocks or shells for decoration • Shallow dish or terrarium • You can use whatever you wish to decorate and embellish

instructions Choose your favourite succulents in a variety of sizes, we’ve used 2" and 4" to create balance. Choose plants that are in scale with your container to avoid a cluttered look. Place about a half inch of gravel in the bottom of your container and add your cactus soil, packing lightly as you fill. Gently plant your succulents to the depth of their current container, leaving 1-2" of space between plants. Carefully pat the cactus soil around the root ball. Now that your soil is nicely packed, press with slight pressure tapping on the side of the pot. There should be a 1/2" between the lip of the pot and the soil. Now you can add your decorative elements to the pots. Think about beach glass, ornaments, broken jewellery, sea shells and colourful rocks. Give it a light water, note whether your container has a drain hole—you’ll be watering more often if it does. Fertilize with a cactus fertilizer once a month to maintain a happy, healthy succulent garden. stimulimag.ca | SPRING 2017
